that boarded up old house
2008-03-19 09:47:00 I was about seven years old I guess and it was summer vacation. We would wake up early and go outside, where we would play all day only coming back home for food or drink as we needed it. I played with my older sister all the time, and sort of tagged along where ever ...
Jelly Mom?:This Old House Has Children
2008-02-04 00:00:00 This Old House Has Children ©Lisa Barker My house is old, it creaks and moans like my aging body and aching bones. It needs new cabinets, flooring and paint. I could use a lift myself but you know I ain’t, because my house is like my soul, aged and accented by life’s toll. What seems not new ...

Kitchen Remodeling Ideas For An Old House
2008-01-09 14:57:00 Many people think that old houses are especially difficult to remodel purely due to their age. In fact, this is not entirely correct. Whether the house is old or quite new, a kitchen remodeling nearly always turns out be very cost effective and the habitants will see a marked improvement in the area. Kitchen remodeling ideas for old homes ...
Memories from the old house.
2007-12-23 20:32:00 I used to have the coolest bar stools in my old house. They weren’t cool when I bought them but when I was finished with them they were very cool. They were plain light colored wooden stools with brown leather cushions on them and I bought some blue and white toile fabric ...
Roman Shades Give Old House A Rich Look
2007-12-13 15:45:00 It was a 150-year-old farmhouse and we were lucky to get it. The house had been well cared for, but nonetheless was showing its age. It had been more than a quarter of a century since it had been remodelled. The thing that struck us most about the two-story stone and frame structure was that it was so much different than the modern homes in a subdivision that had sprung up nearby. This house had tremendous character.I am not a decorator and will be the first to admit it. Personally, I di

My Odorific Old House
2007-12-04 04:50:00 I'll be posting a new series of articles on stained glass construction in a few weeks. I purchased some new ($$!) stained glass design software from Dragonfly, Glass 2000 Professional, to help me complete the half-dozen stained glass projects I've got on my plate. So I'll post a review of that as well. I'm gonna change gears and show a bit of my feminine side. I like fragrant houses. I spent my early years living in a small town in Japan, where my mother became a passionate connoisseur of oriental incense. She often had a subtle fragrance burning in the house long after we moved back to the States. For me, a fragrant house smells like home. Since I moved out on my own, I've usually had a cone of incense burning, mostly temple fragrances. It beats smelling the dogs' microwaved breakfast all day. After moving to Brooklyn I found myself estranged from my Manhattan oriental incense supplier. I tried buying it online but the stuff I was getting smelled more like a broth...

Caulking old houses
2007-11-16 16:33:00 As cold front winds pushed our old windows to the maximum limit of warmth and protection last night — we realized another caulking party is in order. Jane seems to be the only one in the family who can use a caulk gun with artistic finesse. Val and I do better with the hand-held tubes of caulk. I’m on my way to *local giant hardware store* to buy a few more tubes. The big choice is between clear and white silicone. Now, if that doesn’t prove what exciting lives we live on the Inner Banks, I don’t know what does. Future home improvement projects include new downstairs floors but for this winter, caulk and insulation will have to do the necessary weather protection duty for us. I know those of you who live above the Mason-Dixon Line will scoff at my reaction to the “cold” temperatures that hover in the *shiver* 40s but it’s all about what you’re used to in climate. Right? I just want some sunshine next week for our Pittsburgh Caroline&rs...

This old house part 2
2007-10-31 02:23:00 This is the last evening I'm in Iowa. It's been a surreal visit on a lot of levels, but pretty good, I'd say, considering the reason I came. The next time I visit my parents they may no longer live in my childhood home. I have mixed feelings about that -- part of me jumps for joy (they might be considered hoarders), and the other makes me very sad. There are so many memories in this house, leaving them makes me feel like I'm losing something in some way.And I haven't lived here in almost 20 years.Strange, huh?My parents have asked my brothers and I to go through all of the furniture, the boxes, the riff raff that my parents are not planning to take with them, and choose things to take ourselves. It's a strange thing, bargaining with my brothers about my parents' stuff, especially when they are still alive and are there to referee. It's really bizarre. My parents are buying really nice new furniture for their new place. I say, viva! live it up, you've worked too hard an...

That old house...
2007-10-06 01:51:00 I'm sad to report -- my mother is in the hospital today. The doctors know she has diverticulitus, but aren't sure how far it's progressed, or why she has a mass on / in her colon. She and my father are both exhausted, tired of waiting, tired of my mother being in pain. It's exhausting to be sick or to take care of the sick.I wish I could help take care of her, give her a hug and read cheesy magazines with her, but she lives in Iowa, and I, in Seattle. I wish I could do something, I wish I could help. I feel like my hands are tied by distance. Today is probably the first day since I moved out of their house in 1990 that I feel sad to be so far away.My mother's illness is making me reflect on the good times we've had together. We've definitely (and emphasize the definitely) had our struggles over the years, but we've also had some crazy adventures. I'm choosing to think about those today. One of my biggest memories was moving into what my brother and I called "the new h...
Old houses and powder-white sand beaches in Glan, Sarangani
2007-09-24 15:57:00 The next day, we drove to Glan, one of the southernmost municipalities of the island of Mindanao (Jose Abad Santos, Davao del Sur seems to edge it out by a few meters). In the town proper, we checked out the old houses which are mentioned in the DOT website. They have intricate wood designs but sadly, most if not all, have been neglected. The local government should do something about it since old houses in Mindanao are quite rare nowadays. We then proceeded to Barangay Gumasa further down south to check the powder-white sand beach. Yes, you read it right, powder-white sand. It could be the next Boracay if the local government plays its cards right. After a few hours of swimming, we drove back to Gen San to catch our flight back to Manila. But we passed by the provincial capitol in Alabel first to meet some officials.Back in Gen San, we had lunch at Nadie's Chicken Restaurant. Then after fixing our check-in luggage which was all fruits, we went to the airport. I had 26 kilos of fruit...

This Old House
2007-07-21 17:36:00 it hard to blog right now. i just feel a tad ill and so sleepy that i have no idea how these fingers are moving. this is suppose to be our "vacation." oh boy how crud-diddily-licous it has been so far. I had plans, set to motion before the fuckin' bottom of the bank fell out, but once again, bottoms fall and I get stuck in a room with a ceiling fan...those of you who are not familiar with my other blogs...well, ceiling fans follow me like ghosts.Speaking of ghosts...I had the strangest dream this morning. It had to do with a ghost in our house. She stayed at the top of the stairs and for some reason her energy was greater if you opened the weird doors we have that lead to extra storage. It was female. Someone else in the dream could feel her too. He said she was not able to do anything more than be known, but that the strange thing was that her presence was constant...and never left. What does it mean?We had a ghost at the other house. I never felt a ghost before and I did...

My poor old house!
2007-04-11 18:55:00 Todays morning coffee talk post is below, discussing my childhood home and the people that have left it literally sitting 'open' for 2 1/2 years because the husband and wife are divorcing and hating each other. The poor house is caught in the middle.I can't help but wonder how they can afford to pay the mortgage and taxes on a home for 2 1/2 years that they have walked away from. It's not like they are millionaires (you can tell from the 'starter' home they bought).

1926 Hyde Park Home's Green Renovation Televised in This Old House
2007-02-28 17:32:06 Sometimes, I'm amazed at what technology can do. Recently, I read an article about Michael Klug + Michele Grieshaber's 1926 bungalow in Austin's historic Hyde Park, which was renovated in accordance with the Austin Green Building Program. The original home was about 1,500 sf, but after renovations and adding some space, the 2,300 sf home uses half the energy of the original. The house is part of an 8-show feature on This Old House, and you'll be impressed to find a time-lapse video of the renovation project. The DMN article suggests that the eco-friendly additions to the renovation added a price premium of about 10%, but let's not forget that this home is outfitted with some pretty good stuff, including photovoltaics. Here are some of the green features: rainwater reclamation for irrigation and landscaping; spray-foam insulation for added energy efficiency; recycled glass tile and countertops by IceStone; formaldehyde-free wood composites...

Apollonia: Antiquities Under A Hotel And Old Houses
2006-10-04 23:30:05 Tombs from antiquity are waiting to be discovered under old houses in Apollonia and a modern hotel has been built on part of the Western Necropolis, Professor Andre Laronde from Sorbonne University in Paris, told the Society for Libyan Studies today.Professor Laronde described the excavations of the French Mission in Apollonia near to Al-Bayda, 115 miles north-east of Benghazi and 12 miles north of Cyrene.Established in the 7th century BC, Apollonia was the port of Cyrene, for more than a millennium. It was founded by Greek colonists and became a significant commercial centre in the southern Mediterranean. It remained autonomous from Cyrene during the Roman period, and even surpassed it as the major city of the region in the 6th century AD. The theatre is sited in a particularly picturesque location by the sea. Other buildings include the Eastern, Central and Western Basilicas and the Byzantine Palace.Read the rest of this article...
