Phuket Old Town Festival 2012
2012-02-05 10:42:00 The end of January was a busy time for festivals and fairs in Phuket! We had the Chalong Temple Fair, also a food fair at Sapan Hin (the south end of Phuket Town), it was Chinese New Year on the 23rd (welcome to the year of the Dragon!) AND from 28th - 30th January there was the Phuket Old Town Festival, 3 nights of street fair, food stalls, stage performances in the old part of Phuket Town along Thalang Road and in the Queen Sirikit Park next to the TAT office. There had been a one-night fair for the Chinese New Year on the 23rd at the Sanam Chai park on the north side of Phuket Town. We went along and I took some photos - see Chinese New Year in Phuket but much of the New Year celebrations were saved for the Old Town Festival although there were lots of lanterns on the 23rd....We headed into town on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th in the evening. A bit late on Saturday actually as there was a street procession with people dressed up in old style Chinese clothing .. and we missed tha...

Dog-friendly apartments hard to come by in the Gold Coast, Old Town, and th
2011-04-25 22:52:00 If you're searching for a dog-friendly apartment, you might as well skip most of the buildings on the Near North Side, including those in the Gold Coast and Old Town. According to our at-a-glance spreadsheets, the Near North Side has a lower percentage of buildings that allow dogs than any other neighborhood near downtown. Out of the 29 rental developments we've identified there, just five are fine with Fido: 1350 North Lake Shore, Chestnut Tower (121 West Chestnut), 40 - 50 East Chicago, 1 East Delaware, and 1000 North LaSalle. On the other hand, cats and their companions are in luck -- most of the Near North Side's building's are feline-friendly. We could only identify three buildings in the...

Market Tour: Old Town Oil
2010-04-25 21:34:00 When it comes to markets, I'm not easy to impress. Aside from the rare, spectacular Whole Foods Market I can never usually find everything I need under one roof. Organic grocery stores don't usually stock the cheap-o canned and paper goods that I buy (who really needs to spend $3 on a can of black beans?) and my local Jewel doesn't have the produce selection that I can find at a farmer's market to supplement my weekly CSA share....

Old Town Chicago? Try Old Town, Maine!
2010-03-01 04:27:00 You thought Old Town only existed in Chicago? You were wrong....there is another Old Town in Maine! Old Town Maine draws back to the 1770's and Native Americans. The town now consists of 8,500 community residents. I don't think its what you Old Towners experience here in Chicago to say the least. My guess is they don't have taxi cabs honking them down every block they walk. Picture Courtesy of FlickrInstead of the hustle and bustle of the city, the area is known for the beautiful outdoors where people hunt, hike, canoe, and bird watch. The area has over 50 MILES of rivers and streams! (So that is what Old Town Chicago is missing?)Another interesting fact: Old Town Maine had the second railroad in the...

A Walk Through History: Old town and Architecture
2010-03-01 02:19:00 While taking a walk down any of the side streets in Old Town, it is inevitable that you will see a wide variety of houses. Some are small; some are large. Some are made of wood while others were constructed of brick. Either way, each house is unique and, when viewed in the larger sense of the Old Town community, each house contributes to the diversity the neighborhood's landscape. I came upon this realization as I walked up and down the streets looking for something new to write about. But, it wasn't until I stopped to appreciate the beauty of these houses that I realized how interesting each one really was. I couldn't help but wonder: what makes each...

Top 5 Unique Shops in Old Town
2010-02-06 21:32:00 Note: Throughout the course of our community blog, I have focused on the Schools and Education beat. But this week, I decided to switch it up. I wanted to get a closer look at the community itself and see what unique things Old Town really has to offer. So, I decided to take a look at the shopping opportunities on Wells Street and read through some of the "business" posts that my fellow bloggers have put together. In doing so, I found quite an array of interesting places to shop. However, in all fairness, the places listed in the "Top 5 Unique Shops in Old Town" are strictly writer's choice and are subject to disagreement by the reader. With that...

Top mixologists revamping drinks at Old Town Social
2009-12-01 01:15:00 Old Town Social's cocktail menu will relaunch next week with creations by two very talented hometown mixologists. The Drawing Room's Charles Joly and Tim Lacey, who also run beverage consulting company Angel's Share, dreamed up a large list of options for the bar and are chiseling it down to eight or so choices, available in the bar as soon as next week. "It's going to be hard to choose," says Joly of the offerings. Because of the high volume that OTS sees in a weekend, preparations aren't as labored as those at the quiet, loungey Drawing Room, but they still take the same fresh ingredient-driven, rooted-in-classics approach. A signature house cocktail (name still in the works) mixes rye whiskey with Grand...

There were sixteen different types of chili to be exact all vying for the top title. Judging was led by Perennial Chef Ryan Poli and it was a "hotly" contested race to be sure...

Old Town Social rumors
2009-07-06 23:02:00 Chris Freeman, a former managing partner with the Four Corners Tavern Group (Kirkwood, Schoolyard, Gaslight, et al) has been keeping busy with a big bar project this past spring, heading into this summer: Old Town Social, a sizeable grown-up meeting place near the corner of North and Cleveland avenues aiming to open the weekend of July 24. It's a big bar. Such a big bar, it seems, that he must have a partner helping him with the venture, right? The Twittersphere has been abuzz with rumors that former Stone Lotus partner Chris Dexter might be involved, which Freeman won't confirm at this time. "I do have one business partner," he says. "Who exactly it is will remain a mystery until...

2008-05-23 07:35:00 Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s "old town," had its start in the 13th century. The medieval streets are a fascinating study of lanes, arches and stairways. Alittle bit of murder can really get this old town going!
2008-05-19 11:14:00 On Sunday there were police everywhere, there had been confirmed reports of 2 bodies being found and unconfirmed reports of it being a murder suicide. Now “murder” can be taken many ways, it could have been a accident or it could have been intended. From what I have come to think is that one had a fit and collapsed, before hitting the floor the lady fell and hit her head which killed her instantly, her husband now stricken with shock and grief decided he could no longer live knowing he would be on his own which resulted in him taking his own life. In the end a sad loss to the community no matter what happend in the end. Heres the full story so far: The bodies of an elderly married couple have been discovered at their home in West Sussex, police have said. The woman, in her 70s, and the man, in his 80s, were found at an address in Leylands Road, Burgess Hill, at about 1500 BST on Sunday. Police said the deaths were currently being treated as unexplained, but added they w...
