Oliver Perez-induced rage
2008-06-06 15:17:00
It was bound to happen sooner or later. This is what happens when you mix fantasy baseball with work. This poor gentleman had Oliver Perez on his team. He thought he was going to be a gigantic sleeper going into his free-agent year. Watch what happens when he's shown the results of Perez's latest disaster (162.00 ERA, 21.00 WHIP in 1/3 of an inning).
Fantasy Errata: The Oliver Perez edition
2008-06-03 04:36:00
-- Today's Errata column is entirely devoted to how much I hate Oliver Perez. He's gone from mid round sleeper to the bane of my existence. Death to Ollie. You don't see a 21.0 MOTHERFUCKING WHIP VERY OFTEN!-- So I cut him in all three of my leagues ... he started for me in all of them ... and went perusing the waiver wire. Jorge Campillo is starting tomorrow. I'll try him. Between Oliver Perez and Jair Jurrjens (who I can't cut now, as he's basically my fourth starter) it's going to take a month erase the last three days. If Campillo goes down, I'll be scrounging for Jason Bergmann, who at least will be striking guys out.-- Jeff Francoeur now deserves to have me spell his name correctly, as he continues to heat up.-- San Diego has a pitcher named Carlos Guevara, who shows up as C. Guevara in Yahoo. Viva la Revolucion.-- Jay Bruce is this year's Ryan Braun, this year's Albert Pujols, or this year's Chris Shelton? You know what, I still say sell high. -- I just can't go o...
Will The Real Oliver Perez Please Stand Up?
2008-05-13 00:09:00
Oliver Perez has always been something of an enigma. A power throwing southpaw who got to the majors with San Diego at a young age and had some early success, he was sent to Pittsburgh along with Jason Bay in the ill fated Brian Giles deal and turned in an amazing 2004 season, striking ...
Oliver Perez Best Performance

Oliver Perez plays baseball like a kid in a school yard hitting, pitching, stealing bases, experimenting with different arm angles and all were on display in the New York Mets? 8-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday in which the left-hander earned his first win since April 19.?He might drive you nuts every once ...
Boras Discusses Oliver Perez
2008-05-07 13:56:00
Scott Boras represents impending free agent starter Oliver Perez, who might be in line for a huge payday if he can have another decent year.  John Delcos has heard speculation of a five-year, $60MM starting point.  If Perez can post a sub-4.00 ERA in '08, that price will probably be exceeded.  Boras was in L.A. yesterday, giving reporters his typical spin.  To hear Boras tell it, Perez is not erratic and compares favorably to Johan Santana at the same age. Perez, Jon Garland, Mark Prior, and C.C. Sabathia comprise the under-30 free agent starter group.  Perez will be 27 in August and is the youngest of the group.  All four have their flaws, but at least Perez is healthy and won't require $100MM. Boras doesn't plan on negotiating during the season with the Mets.  We know how he operates - if Perez has an off year and that huge offer doesn't materialize, he'll probably find his client a one-year, $12MM deal and hope for a rebound.
Dodgers hit 3 homers off Oliver Perez to beat Mets 5-1 (AP)
2008-05-06 07:58:00
Rafael Furcal hit a leadoff homer against beleaguered Oliver Perez, Blake DeWitt connected for his first home run in the major leagues and the surging Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Mets 5-1 on Monday night. Matt Kemp also homered after being named NL player of the week for the first time earlier in ...
How I feel about Oliver Perez

Oliver, I have you in every league. Perhaps that should have been a warning sign. It's your contract year, motherf****r.Here's some video clips that will help convey to you my sadness and chagrin at your most recent disaster. Oliver Perez is out of control
2008-04-30 17:18:00
As in, he no longer has any. His awful line from today: 1 2/3 innings, 2 hits, 5 walks, 7 runs, 2 earned runs, 2 strikeouts. And all of that, with the exception of one walk to Jason Bay, came in his portion of the second inning. Thank god (and Luis Castillo) that most of the runs were unearned. Still, doesn't detract from the fact that Ollie's command is getting progressively worse this year. I think I have to bench him until the free passes (and key base hits after said free passes) come back down to reasonable levels.
Line of the Day: Oliver Perez
2008-04-03 01:42:00
Great outings were had by a plethora of starting pitchers today. Bannister, Harden, Saunders, Hamels, Carmona and Lester all pitched beautifully. But I'm going with the guy who brought the most heat ...Oliver Perez: 6 innings, 0 ER, 5 hits, 1 BB, 8 Ks for the W.Ollie had some teammates who didn't fare too shabbily either. David Wright and Ryan Church had three hits and three ribbies apiece.
Oliver Perez Lights Out
2008-04-02 22:22:00
Vying for a contract at the end of 2008, Oliver Perez looked good tonight.Perez tossed 6 scoreless innings while striking out 8. His K/9 has always been solid but he's had trouble approaching the 200 inning mark. Motivated by a contract year, he could accomplish that task this year, making it likely he strikes out 200+.He left with a 11-0 lead. Boy is it nice pitching for the Mets.
Oliver Perez beats Mets in arbitration and will make $6.5 million (AP)
2008-02-22 19:03:00
Pitcher Oliver Perez won his salary arbitration case against the New York Mets on Friday and will be paid $6.5 million this year rather than the team’s offer of $4,725,000. The left-hander went 15-10 with a 3.56 ERA last year, when he made $2,425,000. The decision was made by arbitrators Steven Wolf, Robert Bailey and Elizabeth Neumeier, who heard the case Thursday in St. Read the full story.

Oliver Perez Wins Case

Chalk another one up for the players; Oliver Perez beat the Mets in his arbitration hearing. He'll get $6.5MM rather than $4.725MM.  This decision shouldn't really affect Perez's next contract much.  He's a Boras-represented free agent.  If he has a big year, he could get $13-15MM annually on his next deal. It's funny that you mention the 2009 free agent class.  I just touched up my list.
Oliver Perez Could Sign Long-Term
2008-02-15 09:07:00
There seems a sliver of a chance that the Mets hammer out a long-term deal with starter Oliver Perez.  The much more likely scenario is a one-year agreement.  The Mets and Scott Boras have one more week before their scheduled hearing.  This would be over $1.775MM, and the first hearing in the organization in 15 years. Perez, a 26 year-old southpaw, enters his walk year with a possible $50MM+ contract in the balance.  The word to describe his '07 season would be erratic, though the final numbers came out fine.  Perez flashed both elite and terrible control, sometimes in consecutive months.
Mets pitcher Oliver Perez will test free agency
2008-02-14 12:08:00
Oliver Perez suggested he enjoys New York. But the Mets believe Perez will investigate free agency next winter rather than consider a multiyear contract now, and the lefthander said nothing to counter that impression Wednesday according to the New York Daily News. Perez is the lone arbitration-eligible Met yet to settle with the organization on a 2008 contract. He has requested $6.5 million, with the team countering at $4.725 million. Perez said his agents from the Scott Boras Corp. have indicated there has not been any recent movement in contract talks. He should have to be excused from camp for a day if it reaches the arbitration hearing, which Perez expected would occur next Thursday across the state in St. Petersburg. The Mets haven't gone to arbitration since 1992 with David Cone. "Right now I'm just trying to do my job," Perez said.
Mets? Oliver Perez looking ahead (AP)
2008-02-13 00:55:00
Despite a solid 2007 season, New York Mets pitcher Oliver Perez is determined to look forward instead of dwelling on the past. The past has had mixed results for Perez, who figures to be the team’s fourth starter this season after going 15-10 with a 3.56 ERA and 174 strikeouts last season. “Right now, I’m ...

Oliver Perez Plans To Reach Free Agency
2008-02-07 10:13:00
Apparently Scott Boras has no intention of giving the Mets a chance to sign lefty Oliver Perez to a multiyear deal before he reaches free agency after this season.  Currently the Mets and Perez are $1.775MM apart on their '08 salary figures. About a month ago, I suggested that Perez could be in line for $16MM a year.  That still seems crazy to write.  But consider: Boras may have had an off year but he's still the best agent in baseball.  If anyone can push the salary bar, it's him. Perez will be only 27 when he signs.  This is very uncommon.  Jon Garland, C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe, and Ben Sheets will all be older. Consider Carlos Silva the new bar for mediocrity: a 29 year-old with a career ERA+ of 102 in 945 innings gets four years and $48MM.  Garland may raise that bar to $13-14MM annually next offseason.  While Perez has been very inconsistent in his career, he is more intriguing than Silva or Garland.  Another seaso...
Oliver Perez 2008 Projection
2007-11-11 04:45:00
The Mets' Oliver Perez is one hurler who I think will disappoint in 2008, after serving as a bargain for so many owners in '07. In '07, Perez produced 177 innings with a 3.56 ERA and 1.31 WHIP, plus a tidy 174 Ks.  The 26 year-old southpaw also won 15 games.  He was inconsistent, dominating in May and July and looking mediocre or worse otherwise. For 2008 I see Perez posting a 4.16 ERA and 1.36 WHIP.  Part of this comes from upping his .278 BABIP to the Mets' .293 mark.  While his strikeout rate is strong, Perez's control remains suspect.  That means an unhelpful WHIP and the possibility for implosion. Perez pitched 164 innings in '06, and that increased to 179 this year.  The Mets missing the playoffs kept him out of the danger zone.  I think he'll have some kind of minor injury in '08 limiting him to 180 innings.  I'd look for about 12 wins.  The Ks should give him a few dollars of value in a standard mixed league but it should...
Mets Lack Vampire's Mentality
2007-08-18 03:19:00
Stephen A. Smith, the notoriously loudmouthed ESPN broadcaster, has a job at the Philadelphia Inquirer as a general sports columnist. That means he has to comment on multiple sports, which of course forces him to occasionally write about baseball, much to the dismay of baseball fans everywhere. Today, wise baseball fan that he is, Stephen A. has broken down the Mets' struggles in his latest column.Take a trip north to New York, hear the rumblings out of Shea Stadium, and you'll learn all is not well with the team there.I have heard these rumblings, but alas, I need Stephen A. to truly break it down for me.One pitcher in New York, John Maine, has been a shell of himself since the all-star break, going 3-3 with a 6.31 ERA in seven starts. He starts off on the right foot, with a fair criticism of Maine.Another, Oliver Perez (3-2, 4.33), hasn't been much better. Now, he begins to slip a little bit. Apparently, Oliver Perez "hasn't been much better" despite the number that Stephen hims...

Blog Reactions After Amazin's Win [J. Mark English]
2007-06-16 13:34:00
The Mets snapped their losing streak last night behind a brilliant pitching performance of Oliver Perez. Roger Clemens took his first loss, although he did very well in a 2-0 pitching duel. Jose Reyes was the catalyst behind the Mets win, including a monster home run into the right field upper deck. Here are some reactions from both a Mets blog, and a Yankees blog:...maybe the bright lights of a big series is what the Mets needed to play some crisp baseball, especially defensively... ...give a game ball to reyes, who was 3-for-3 with a home run, 2 rbi and 3 stolen bases... ...give another game ball to Carlos Gomez for a ridunculous Endy Chavez-esque catch between the outstretched arms of yankee fans to take away a home run from Miguel Cairo and throw a strike to second to peg Hideki Matsui at second for an inning-ending double play... ...the effectively wild Oliver Perez did a terrific job settling down after the third inning, compiling 13 straight outs before exiting in the eigh...
Fantasy Break: Ten Players To Move
2007-06-15 16:01:00
(This article was originally written for the website The Fantasy Sports Review)The baseball season is well underway, and with it comes an opportunity to review your club and see what is working and what is not. Changes will inevitably be made to your squad, and other owners will be itching to fix problem areas on their teams. Some guys have gotten off to great starts that may not last. The following are players you should try to move while the time is right.- Brad Penny, SP, L.A. Dodgers: Penny is scorching hot at 8-1 with a 2.18 ERA, but if you'll remember, he started off similarly hot last spring, and started the All-Star game. And while he ended up having a pretty good 2006 (16-9, 4.33), something has always been missing for Penny, and he has yet to put together a truly outstanding year. With his stuff, that raises a red flag.- J.J. Hardy, SS, Milwaukee Brewers: The reasons not to believe in Hardy are plentiful. Prior to this year, his career high batting average was .247 and hi...

2007-05-30 23:32:00
So I was watching my Giants take on the Mets Tuesday night on ESPN. This is another good thing about the Bonds' HR chase (in my opinion obviously), more nationally televised games. The game was pretty much dominated by the pitching and defense from the middle until close to the end of the game. Rookie sensation Tim Lincecum had a solid outing for the Giants in a no-decision with 7 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, and 8 K. Oliver Perez had a great performance as well for the Mets lasting 7 Innings as well with 5 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, and 8 K.Did I say solid pitching till the end of the game? Well atleast until the 12th. And then there was Armando Benitez. Let me recap the 12th inning...Giants finally broke through in their part of the 12th, Omar Vizquel started it off with a walk. Then Fred Lewis bunted Vizquel over to third after Vizquel advanced to second after a wild pitch. Mark Sweeney was then HBP. Randy Winn then grounded out while Vizquel scored, beating out the tag to take a 5-4 lead. Then this...
Perez and Pettitte Look Untouchable [David Stefanini]
2007-05-24 06:06:00
The New York Mets prayers have been answered; Oliver Perez is back to his old ways of winning in dominant fashion. Not only that, it seems whenever he pitches in a "big game situation" he puts forth an unbelievable performance. It is time to hop on the Perez bandwagon and ride it the rest of the season. I told Mark English, and a few of my other friends, at the beginning of this season to watch out for Oliver Perez. I had a feeling he was going to show up and be dominant; it looks like I was correct. The New York Yankees should be counting their blessings by the way Andy Pettitte has pitched this season. At the beginning of the year, I thought they overpaid for a pitcher who had his better days long behind him; I could not have been more wrong. Pettitte has been nothing short of amazing this season, and would be the clear Cy Young winner at this point, if the bullpen didn't blow a lead every time he pitched. With that being said, I want to put this question out there to the readers a...
