Beijing Olympics - The beginnning of a 24 days penance
2008-08-24 02:51:00
It was 08:08 PM on the 8th of August 2008. A point in the day when all counters of life were at '8' - a number some considered auspicious and yet others not so auspicious, the reason for which, I really do not know. Beijing was lit up with fireworks and lightings and the Bird's Nest hosted the grand opening ceremony of the Olympics Games. China has spent a huge amount of money on hosting this Olympics which is going to be an event spanning 24 days in the month of August. There are quite a few gold medals to be won in the games. The total cost of the celebrations in the opening ceremony of the Games was about $70,00,000. The next 24 days is going to be festive season for everyone. Television news channels which had not had any scoops for the past few days will have plenty of things to cover. They would for sure make huge money covering the entire event. So will the sponsors, not to talk about the participants, who have spent their lives waiting for this event. It i...
Alleged Human Rights Abuser on Vancouver?s 2010 Winter Olympics Organizing

Beijing Olympics Quote Of The Day
2008-08-23 07:06:00
This one from Steve Kelley, consistently excellent sportswriter for the Seattle Times, in an article entitled, "Usain Bolt electrifies Beijing, winning the 200 in a world-record time": If you're old enough to remember the first time you saw Muhammad Ali, the first time you saw Roberto Clemente, the first time you saw Magic Johnson, watching Bolt has that same never-seen-it-before feeling.

Are the Olympics Good for America?
2008-08-22 10:00:00
There's been a lot of chatter about how China sees the 2008 Olympics as an opportunity to put its best foot forward, for them to impress the world with how modern and progressive the Communist party can be but I'm really less concerned with what our neighbor to the east is doing and more concerned about how lately the United States seems to embarrass itself on the world stage every time we get together for this little party. If China is suffering a public relations "situation" then America must be in a public relations crisis. Since 1776 has there been a time when the country was so widely criticized and reviled? The thing is the Olympic games offer a unique chance to put aside political issues and to meet with neighbors on equal terms where anyone can walk away with a victory medal but the United States so often flaunts its celebrity status to the point that I can't help but say I don't blame the other countries if they hate our guts. I'd hate our guts too for two simple reaso...

Beijing Olympics Quote Of The Day
2008-08-19 09:55:00
James Fallows telling us not to worry about the plethora of "I love China" decals we are seeing on so many Chinese people's faces: History is full of examples of "rising national powers" getting the big head, feeling arrogant, and doing dangerous things. That's not the main feeling I get here. It's negative Chinese nationalism, like what appeared after the protests over the Olympic torch relay in April, that we should worry about. So a confident China is to be congratulated; a victimized-feeling China is the one to be feared.

Beijing Olympics Quote Of The Day
2008-08-19 03:37:00
Too good a line not to repeat. It is from a Lost Laowai post, entitled, "Beijing: Chinatown in Disneyland," reflecting on the atmosphere in Beijing during the Olympics: The Beijing people seem happy in the way that the staff at a five star hotel are happy, but not in the way that a group of old men playing mahjong in a hutong are happy.

Who Is Winning The Olympics?
2008-08-17 19:25:00
So is it gold medals that determine it or is it total medals? Should we give 3 points for a gold, 2 for a silver, and one for a bronze? And shouldn't team sports in something big-time like basketball or volleyball or even soccer count for more than an individual metal in synchronized dive wrestling? For more on this, check out James Fallows' post, "More on Chauvinism. medals, and Olympic TV" UPDATE: Peking Duck also addresses this issue.

British Olympic triumphs should embarrass the petty English Nationalists

It’s increasingly unfashionable in some circles to celebrate your Britishness in England. China Olympics Athlete Blog List And Why No Chinese Magic Johnson?
2008-08-15 14:23:00
Got an email this morning asking me why I was not writing more on the Olympics. Main reason is because I am vacationing in Pentwater, Michigan, placing me about 1800 miles from my 50" HDTV and forcing me to watch it on a 21" circa 1970s model. But, I have asked co-blogger, Steve Dickinson, who is in Qingdao right now, to give us all a report on the Olympic goings-on there. Expect that soon. In the meantime, Danwei has a great list of Olympic Athletes who are blogging on the games. But I feel compelled to discuss one thing I have noticed in watching the Olympics and that is that China's basketball team does not have a single point guard worth a damn and I have to wonder why. Is it further evidence of the shortcomings of a planned economy? Does China pull out the great athletes for other sports, leaving only tall people for basketball? Is it further evidence of a lack of innovation or take-chargedness (I know I am making up this word, but it works) in China? Great point...

Fake Fireworks China Olympics Ceremony: "Wag The Olympics"
2008-08-14 06:19:00
http://zennie2005.blogspot.com- -- Last Friday's Olympics Opening Ceremony in Beijing Olympics Stadium was without a doubt the greatest event of its kind in the history of the Olympic Games. It was China's "coming out" party, and the organizers $300 million was well-spent.The results showed in China Olympian Li Ning's levitating speed-skater style "walk" around Olympic Stadium and his lighting of a giant torch, which in turn caused what had to be the largest fireworks display in the history of the Olympic Games, if not the World.A spectacle that looked tremendous, and even animated, and that's because it was. The organizers of the event admitted that computer graphics were used to "replace" the actual fireworks images because the fear was that the "haze" -- read: smog -- was so bad that a great camera shot of the pyrotechnics would have not been possible. Still, it was controversial because it took away from the overall historic effort and also took the wind out of the sails of...

Ric Blas Jr Update
2008-08-13 17:47:00
After I wrote about Ric Blas Jr., the Guam Olympian competing in judo, long-time reader and friend Messiah told me that Blas is the new Kevin Pittsnogle of Sean?s Ramblings (search Pittsnogle on this site to see how much I wrote about him in the early days of this blog). Therefore, as the unofficial blog of Blas, I thought I would share some updates about his experiences in Beijing. Blas will face Lasha Gujejiani of Georgia sometime late Friday afternoon in the Men's Heavyweight (100+kg/220+ lbs) preliminaries. A commenter in my original post wrote that his match will take place at 9pm PST, but I have not been able to verify this anywhere else online. I really hate rooting against a Georgian athlete since the country is at war, but I?m still pulling for Ric.According to the Pacific Daily News, which states that although NBC broadcasters at the Opening Ceremonies cited Blas as the heaviest competitor at the Games at 399 pounds, Blas is actually 440 pounds, both competitors are t...

Olympics - Beijing National Stadium First Design
2008-08-13 12:59:00
chinese-olympic-stadium_web, originally uploaded by sokkmonkey. As breath-taking as the current "Bird's Nest" design of the Beijing National Stadium is, this one -- an onion -- was favored before it. But the enormity and scale of the design reflects just how much in resources China committed to these games. The total cost of the China Olympics was $40 Billion. That's more than twice as great as the current cost of the London games, which is at $18 billion. The cost of the Beijing Opening Ceremony alone is about $300 million.
The Olympics are live in the Voxant Newsroom
2008-08-11 21:24:00
Don't miss out on all of the amazing feats and nail-biting events from the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. Just last night, Michael Phelps, Cullen Jones, Jason Lezak and Garret Weber-Gale snatched victory right out of the jaws of the trash-talking French in the 4-x-100 relay. It was one of those moments that only the Olympics can provide, full of apprehension, excitement and victory. Not to mention overwhelming sense of pride and accomplishment that swept over the young American team, and the viewing audience. Monumental seems to be the best word to describe it. The Voxant Newsroom has the Olympics covered, monumental moments and all. We've got images from strong photo groups such as Newscom, SIPA Press, European PressPhoto Agency and Getty Images. We've got Olympic video from Reuters, the Associated Press, the BBC, CBS and other local outlets. Of course, due to certain licensing restrictions we don't have footage from the actual events, but our content providers get exc...

I had told myself not to say anything about the Olympics, figuring all those who are interested could watch it themselves, but Brendan O'Kane's post on it is just too damn funny and snarky (I am using that word for the first time on here just to seem hip) to pass up. I recommend you read it.
Is China Going Green, Part XVI -- The Olympics Are Making Green The New Bla
2008-08-09 17:22:00
About three years ago, I became convinced foreign environmental companies would thrive in China. But until only around six months ago, my firm's environmental clients seemed to have more regulatory problems in China than those in any other industry. Not sure why, but that seems to have changed. The Earth2Tech Blog has an interesting post highlighting ten companies (mostly foreign) whose green technologies are making inroads into China, thanks at least in part to the Olympics. (h/t to All Roads Lead to China) Further proof, perhaps, of China's willingness to allow foreign companies to participate in helping China's environment.

The guy pictured to the right is Ricardo "Ric" or "R.J." Blas Jr., an Olympian representing Guam in judo. I?m not kidding. Seriously, they really do have judo in Guam! According to Bob Costas during the opening ceremonies where he (Ric, not Bob) was the flag-bearer for Guam, Ric may be the heaviest athlete in Olympics history. Unlike Nadia Comaneci, the Romanian gymnast who won five gold medals, Ric has a MySpace page, which includes many pictures of Ric in action (judo and otherwise). If there?s one person I want to do well in Beijing, it?s Ric, particularly since he could pummel me if I get on his bad side. Here?s a little more about Blas from Guam?s Pacific Daily News (as opposed to Guam?s Atlantic Daily News).
