My Writing Tools
2009-09-13 07:48:00
I’ve been writing since I was eleven years old, when I wrote my first book. I first started writing in my father’s old Air Force writing kit. I’d just replace the notebooks after I’d filled them. When I’d finish writing a story long-hand, I’d type up the final version. (I was probably the only eleven-year-old back then who had her own typewriter.) The tools have gotten more sophisticated over the years. Being the tech geek that I am, I had one of the first home computers when they came out in the early 80’s. Back when they were still big, clunky machines that often crashed just for the heck of it. Back before the internet was widely available, when research still meant a trip to the library. Back when printing out a manuscript meant tearing each piece of paper, page by page, off one long perforated ream, after the painfully slow dot-matrix printer had finally stopped clattering. I’ve progressed through the years all the way up to my cu...
Hans Urs von Balthasar on writing and living
2009-01-22 09:04:00
The other day, a friend gave me a very charming little book by Hans Urs von Balthasar, My Work: In Retrospect (Ignatius, 1993). It includes some remarkable reflections on the processes of writing – including the following, on the gap between one’s life and one’s writing:“It is not possible to make a clean separation between [writing and living]; a book must reflect much of the meaning that the writer seeks to give his own existence, even if this meaning is rather often stamped on the book against the direct will and supposition of the author…. Whoever has truly experienced this gives up the attempt to bring his literary work into harmony with his life; when he writes, he is ahead of himself in a dream of the totality in which he would like to give his fragments a sure home; then once more he limps along behind his own self, or even creeps backward and looks around, like Lot’s wife, into a beloved image of the past, an image that entices all the more magically since it is...
On Writing Fantasy Fiction
2009-01-18 23:36:00
I have all these ideas related to the transition that I’d like to write about before the inauguration, thoughts on the outgoing president and his successor, yet my mind constantly wanders to other topics, my interests in world history, my love for the theater and cinema and my own proposed fantasy epic. I’ve recently begun a ...

On Writing and Getting Un-Stuck
2008-02-16 06:51:00
Today when I was logged in this blog, I noticed that I have written 186 posts which generated 2676 comments. I was surprised at how much I had written especially when at the time I started this blog, I had no intention of keeping it up. It was fun to write and it was fun to see comments on what I had written. It still is fun to see comments. But now I am much more self-conscious for some reason. This is also becoming one the reasons for the decline in my posting frequency. Oh, writing that word, self-conscious reminds me of a brief conversation I had with Liz Strauss once and I had said I couldn’t write anything (apparently, this has been the case for some time now) and do you want to know what she said? Her answer was “Pearl, There’s no pressure. Doc Searls says “A blog is just an email to the world.” ” And that gave me a much needed push and I was fine for some time. Isn’t that so profound? Liz always writes such beautiful and inspira...

11 Blogging Tips On Writing For Non Native English Speakers
2008-02-06 09:00:00
English is the most widely spoken language so I won’t be surprised if you choose to use it on your blog even if you’re not a native English speaker. Being a non native English speaker myself, I have decided to use English because of the huge potential readership. Blogging with your second language, however, may affect your blog especially if you fail to write quality posts. Here are the most common problems that affect blogs that are written in English by non native English speakers. Grammar Mistakes Spelling Errors Difficult to Understand The fact is, these problems are not exclusive to non native English speakers. I’ve seen a lot of blogs authored by native English speakers and yet they commit the same mistakes. It does not mean, however, that since it’s common and widely tolerated that it’s okay for you to commit these mistakes. I’m not trying to justify grammar mistakes, spelling errors and the inability to write an understandable ...

Balancing Two Loves: Writing with Children
2007-11-18 18:27:00
Through experience I can tell you that writing, trying in and of itself, can be quite the challenge when there are children on hand demanding attention. To be hot on the heels of a fantastic thought process only to be interrupted by a two year old who needs to go potty is the most frustrating experience a writer can have.Just as your main character comes into focus, nearly transparent and quickly fleeting, the baby wakes from her nap for her afternoon feeding, chasing your character far beyond reach. Arrgh! Writing a hot love scene for a romance novel can be cooled quickly by a pre-teen who wants to know what he can have for a snack and when dinner is going to be ready! One might think that balancing two loves - the love of children and the love of your writing career - might be a far fetched fantasy. However, with a few good tricks and a whole lot of patience (with yourself and your children), it is possible to reach the dreams of being a great parent AND a great writer!Without tyi...

Writing Prompt: Old Photos
2007-11-10 17:05:00
Next time you're sitting at odds with your muse, try setting down your pen and picking up a photo album. What may seem like a "lack of productivity" may actually produce a large range of benefit. Writers often try to overcome writer's block by writing something, when actually, what we need to do is rest our creative brains, feed them, and allow them to rejuvenate. Sifting through old photos will not only occupy the writer during down time, but may also stimulate memories, characteristics, story lines and raw emotion, with which to return to writing. One way to use old photos while writing is to pick one photo at random and begin your writing with the sentence, "I remember when...." Knowing that you're simply strolling down memory lane for your own benefit rather than trying to create something profound for publication, you'll be more apt to be honest with yourself and less concerned with your choice of words. Writing for and from personal experience, any number of things might ap...
Mark My Words!
2007-11-09 13:57:00
Most of us won?t deny the power of words ? especially those of us who rely on them as tools of our trade. We, as a species, regardless of the language we speak, depend on words to get us through each day. We read words on menus when we order food in restaurants; we rely on words to direct us in traffic. Words are used to comfort children as we sing them a lullaby or tuck them in at night with a bed time story. We depend on words to communicate with each other, and with our own thoughts. Yet, for as much as we recognize and rely upon our need for words, rarely do we value their true power. Words are power! In the book *The Four Agreements, author Miguel Ruiz refers to words as white magic and black magic, explaining that every single word we think or speak becomes a spell. That spell then attaches itself to you, the one to whom you're speaking, or your environment, where it will remain until a more powerful word spell breaks it. Everything you say has power and influence over everyth...
A Writer's Worst Mistake
2007-11-08 16:49:00
Forgive what I?m about to say, but writers, particularly those who are on the up-climb in their career, can be some of the most arrogant, selfish, and self-centered people to be encountered. This does not apply to each and every person who writes, ? but far and wide there?s a frustrating sense of ?all about me? syndrome sweeping the field of writing. This is not to say that writers are bad people, or that they don?t deserve credit and reward for their hard work. But escalating success does not warrant a bad attitude or lack of appreciation for those who supported them along the way. The sad part is that most of the time, these people don?t even realize how they?re coming across to others! In fact, the energy they?re exerting is anything but arrogance in most cases, but rather an over-abundance of self promoting, which is a must if one is to get their work noticed! Writers get so caught up in self promotion that they forget to pay attention to anything besides their own portfolio! On...
Preparing for Publication
2007-11-06 18:53:00
Now that you've written, polished and perfected your piece, you'd like to get it published. This is where one must answer the basic questions of how to submit, where to submit, to whom you're submitting and when to submit. There are basic steps to take before attempting to get your work published. First, and perhaps the most arduous task, is research. "But I've already researched the material in my story," you might say; but the kind of research referred to herein is that of the market. It is imperative to know which publishing companies handle which kinds of material. For example, if you've written a story about a fictional character, it would be a waste of time to submit your work to publishers dealing only with non-fiction material. Certain publishers only accept manuscripts on specific topics or with certain cultural backgrounds. I once submitted a picture book text with the theme of imagination. Then, I?d learned that the publisher to whom I?d submitted only accepted stories...

The Seasoned Blog
2007-11-02 10:34:00
Blogs, otherwise known as online diaries or web journals, are the hottest thing on the Internet today. Virtually everyone surfing the net on a regular or semi-regular basis either has a blog themselves, or has spent time reading blogs. There?s just something about the raw exposure of this ?reality internet? that is attractive to people. But the other hand, there?s a vulnerability involved with baring your essentials for the world to feed on in their spare time.Plenty are the numbers of scorned souls, bleeding hearts, and wounded spirits who have fallen prey to online predators with negative intent. One of two things usually happens to set back or scare off those who are new to the blogging scene. The blog won?t ?take off? and isn?t popular and doesn?t stand out in the multitude of seasoned blogs, or the new blogger will get caught up in the excitement of it all, get too comfortable, expose a secret, and then live to regret it when the wrong person finds the post on the web. But the ...
