Secret onsen in Mývatn, Iceland

In my series about secret onsen, I would like to add an onsen in Iceland. Just outside Mývatn, a thermal spring has been created from exhaust water from the thermal electricity plant which creates a perfect bath. Much smaller than the Blue Lagoon clo...
Kinosaki Onsen (hot spring)
2008-02-23 03:33:00
????Located near the Sea of Japan in Hyogo Prefecture, Kinosaki is a quaint town with many public baths and onsen, or hot springs. The economy of the town is devoted almost entirely to hot spring tourism and crab, which is a local delicacy.Bathing in hot springs in the area dates back 1400 years. The resort town of Kinosaki has many ryokan (Japanese inns) and seven public baths. These draw in crowds primarily from Osaka and Kyoto, from which express trains arrive frequently.Exiting the train station, the main street is a jumble of restaurants, antique shops, and fish stalls that sell freshly caught crab and squid and various types of fish. Crab can range in price from 1500 yen (about $15) per all the way up to 15,000 yen depending upon the size and type.At the end of this street is the Otani River. Willows lean over this small, tree-lined canal that feeds into the Sea of Japan. In front of you is Ichi no Yu (pictured above right), a massive public bath that features a "Cave Bath." Tu...
onsen maigic (kawazu, izu, japan)
2008-02-15 06:00:00
Kawazu, Izu. I believe I have always a fascination with water. Living in Japan has brought out in me an increased intrigue in this most hypnotic element, particularly in terms of how to combine it with trees and other flora: ways of weaving it into the tapestry of a garden. Hiking up in the hills of Kawazu, tracing back to the source of one if the larger rivers in the area, I found a series of lovely waterfalls. Now, it should be noted that as the entire area is geothermally active, the water pouring out from various crevasses and streams was not always cold-- in some areas steam was being released in such voluminous amounts that it would appear as though the very earth was giving birth to the clouds above. After a while, we came to a giant onsen lodge built along the side of the cliff; it had an amazing maze of pipes running to different rooms and areas, some quite new and some that seem as though they had been built into the very foundation of this ancient structure. It was quite ...

Yunoyama Onsen

?????Yunoyama onsen at the base of Mount Gozaisho (1212m) in Mie Prefecture is an easy day trip from Nagoya for those in search of some hot, healing spa waters during the cold season.Legend has it that the hot springs were discovered in the 8th century by hunters who spotted deer enjoying the hot water. Situated in Suzuka Kokutei Park, the small spa village has a number of Japanese-style inns or ryokan, where you can spend the night or just pop in during the day to take the waters.Bath charges range from around 500 yen to 1,000 yen for entry to the baths at the various hotels, many of which have rotemburo or outdoor pools. Here are a list of some of the options:Otel do Maronie (059 392 3210) 1000 yen for adults; 500 yen for childrenHotel Yunoki (059 392 2141) 800 yen for adults; 400 yen for childrenKuranosuke (059 392 2509) 800 yen for adults; 400 yen for childrenShikanoyu (059 392 2141) 1000 yen for adults; 3-500 yen for childrenIrodorikoyo (059 392 3135) 525 yen for adultsAccessYun...
Dentsu Executive offends and humiliates employee with brothel and onsen tri
2007-11-02 12:24:00
The Associated Press is reporting some embarrassing news about Dentsu, Japan’s largest advertising agency. Steve Biegel, a former executive of Dentsu’s U.S. branch, is suing the company because CEO Toyo Shigeta forced Biegel into awkward, sexually charged situations: Shigeta took them to a brothel, leaving Biegel, who is married, offended and humiliated that he had been forced or duped into going there, the lawsuit said. It said Shigeta later demanded they participate in prostitution and became angry when they did not, accusing them of being “no fun.†The lawsuit said Shigeta later told them that having sex with prostitutes was a proper style of conducting business and commemorating business dealings. According to the lawsuit, Biegel, of Woodbury, N.Y., was “horrified, offended and humiliated by this sexually debasing experience of being forced to attend a brothel imposed on him as a condition of his employment.†On another business trip to Tokyo in Octobe...
Minakami-onsen Hot Spring and Mt. Tanigawa
2007-10-23 05:34:00
During my On- the job training in Japan, I have been to this hot spring resort where I have enjoyed numerous outdoor sports. Minakami-onsen (hot spring resort) is located in the northern part of Gunma. It is said to have been found in around 16th century and is a generic term for Minakami, Yubiso, Tanigawa, Unose, Takaragawa, and Yunokoya Spas.In getting there, take a bus from Jyomo Heights to Minakami Onsen, which takes about 10 minutes. In order to get to Mt. Tanigawa, take another bus from Jyomo Heights to Tanigawa Ropeway, which takes about 55 minutes. Tokyo Station is about 2 hours 30 minutes from Shin-Osaka Station by the JR Tokaido Shinkansen Line.We can have the chance to view fine views of Mt. Tanigawa, Mt. Hotaka, Mt. Shibutsu. The town has several scenic spots such as Lake Fujiwara-ko, Lake Togen-ko, and Lake Okutone-ko. The town is also known for its skiing grounds such as Tenjindaira slopes. You can also enjoy outdoor sports like rafting. But I never tried. Maybe I will...
Kurokawa Onsen
2007-04-27 13:28:00
????, ???Kurokawa onsen is one of Kyushu's best onsen resorts.Kurokawa has grown in popularity over the last ten years and despite its reasonably out-of-the-way location, it is best to spend a night here to sample the special atmosphere in the early morning and the evening when the day-trippers are not in town.Kurokawa has over 20 hot springs situated along the river at the foot of the steep, wooded valley. There are some excellent rotemburo (outside baths) and prices for some of the public spas start as low as 100 yen.Accommodation options with breakfast and evening meal in any of Kurokawa's ryokan are on the expensive side but great service and food translates to excellent value for money.Kurokawa's tourist office (Tel: 0967 44 0076; 9am-6pm) offers a map of the spas and a day pass (1200 yen) for entry to three onsen.Kurokawa's most well-known hot spas include: Shinmeikan (Tel: 0967 44 0916), which has mixed bathing rotemburo and a cave bath, Yamabiko Ryokan (Tel: 0967 44-0311...
High-Waisted NONSENSE... Please Make It Stop.
2007-04-25 07:22:00
I've looked and looked at this high-waisted trend, and I just cannot in good conscience, get behind this extreme foolishness look. I mean look at these jeans! They're nothing more than the "Mom" jeans from the SNL skit done a few years ago! And have you peeped the madness that is that pair on the far upper right? How seriously insane are those jeans??? The zipper on those things is about 10 feet long! And no, they're NOT photoshopped. At all. Check them out for yourself here. Unreal. I mean, what woman seriously wants to wear a pair of jeans where the zipper stops right beneath her breasts? I understand that fashion changes and evolves, recycles and repeats, but this right here, is just all types of wrong. NOT CUTE.

Obtaining valid consent for doing large genetic studies in developing count
2007-04-24 17:04:00
Genetic research has the potential to improve global health by discovering what makes people susceptible or resistant to certain diseases, and what causes the diseases themselves, thereby guiding prevention efforts. Genetic studies, for example, are providing clues for scientists working on vaccines against HIV, malaria and TB. But it is crucial, say Dave ...
Stop the Nonsense
2007-04-23 16:05:00
Messenger RNA is used by the body to encode proteins based on the structure of certain genes. In mRNA as in DNA, genetic information is encoded in the sequence of four nucleotides arranged into codons of three bases each. Each codon encodes for a specific amino acid, except the stop codons that terminate protein synthesis. But what happens if the DNA of the genes mutates, or becomes corrupted? Sometimes it causes the wrong proteins to be encoded. Sometimes, the DNA mutates in such a way that the Messenger RNA is prematurely truncated. Example (thanks to Wikipedia): DNA: ATG ACT CAC CGA GCG CGA AGC TGA mRNA: AUG ACU CAC CGA GCG CGA AGC UGA Protein: Met Thr His Arg Ala Arg Ser Stop Now, suppose that a mutation occurs in the DNA: DNA: ATG ACT CAC TGA GCG CGA AGC TGA mRNA: AUG ACU CAC UGA GCG CGA AGC UGA The RNA derives from the DNA (where UGA derives from TGA) In this case, UGA is a stop codon, so the protein produced by this interaction looks like this: Prot...

Ninja Nonsense Anime Volume 2
2007-04-15 02:00:00
Ninin ga Shinobuden, known here in the west as Ninja Nonsense, is pretty aptly named. There's ninjas...and there's nonsense. Once again, my thanks to Sergio Aviles for sponsoring this review from my "Yuri Wishlist." When I reviewed Volume 1 of this series, I labeled it a "yuri" anime. Not so this one, although there is some yuri-ish implication and service. But by and large, it's just silliness all the way down. There's fart jokes and crotch jokes and nudity jokes and being scared jokes and gags about sex and food and various body parts...and one or twice some slight ninja-ing goes on. But not much. :-)This volume also makes it maddenlingly clear that the protagonist of the series here is not Shinobu, despite the series' original name, but Onsokomaru. He is the catalyst for pretty much every gag.In terms of yuri, the best scene is one that turns out to be a fantasy. But the scene is important for two reasons: one, the massive yuri-service in and of itself, which is kind of fun,...

Even More Utter Nonsense
2007-04-07 03:03:00
I was going to review manga today, but got caught up in something entirely stupid that I feel like sharing just because.Totally off-topic for this site, but it's my site, and the news is about me...After being together for almost 24 years, my wife and I are undergoing an official ceremony on Tuesday. NJ now allows civil unions that guarantee all the many legal things a marriage does, and despite our commitment to never commit to anything...here we are. No ceremony, no pomp and circumstance or anything, just signing papers. And dessert. But after a long, rather bizarre day full of much good (thank you Ted!) and extremely bad (email from some desperate soul in Japan who is stranded, lost and alone) Serge, Sean and Adam convinced me to make a "wedding registry" thingball on Amazon for myself and the wife. (She's busy adding $500 truffles even as I type.)Anyway, I'm not saying you *have* to look at it, or even that you *ought* to. But, if you're the kind of person who is either a voy...

Jobs Nonsense
2007-04-05 10:43:00
Last night's Jersey Evening Post featured a huge front-page headline, "RECORD-BREAKING FINANCE JOBS BOOM". The accompanying article went on to proudly proclaim how the number of jobs in the island increased last year by over 1500 - because of the Finance industry. Now that all sounds fine and funky - until you consider the huge percentage of staff that finance companies routinely bring over to

American Idol-Sanjaya ,the best nonsense singing crap of last night!!
2007-04-04 20:23:00
In what was Idol’s best performance episode thus far in season six, our nervous nine tackled American classics. And while we’re still waiting for a 12-step program to be developed, we have to finally admit - just this once! - that after this episode, we’re totally on Team Sanjaya. Paula was on our side, too, especially after the man of the hour took her for a twirl during his much-improved Sammy Davis number. He’s taking baby steps, but his vocals and stage presence are finally getting there! And while he’s stepping up his performance game big time, Sanjaya unfortunately missed the fashion train. The singer, who came dressed like Davis himself, right down to the sleek ‘do – proudly welcomed America to “the universe of Sanjaya!†Clearly, the kid’s been loving all the attention thrown his way of late. Even this week’s mentor, Tony Bennett, loves Sanjaya, although the legendary crooner did have to stifle a bit of laughter while coaching the co...

Yuri Anime: Ninja Nonsense, Volume 1
2007-04-02 01:50:00
First off, today's review is brought to you by Sergio Aviles, who sent me this as part of my holiday beg-a-thon. (And, once again, should *you* desire to sponsor a review, feel free to pick something from my Amazon Wishlist. It will be greatly appreciated and you will be thanked!)It's standard operating wackiness (S.O.W.) in Ninja Nonsense, Volume 1. As I commented in my original review of Ninin ga Shinobuden, the entire plot of this series can be summed up as "wackiness ensues."It all begins when high school student Shiranui Kaede is sitting around not studying for her finale exam when female ninja-in-training Shinobu enters her room, and her life. Shinobu is on a quest for schoolgirls' underwear in order to pass her ninja exam. And that's about the way the whole series goes. :-) Something normal (flower viewing) is complicated by something silly (monsoon) and then something inexplicable happens (crocodile eats Onsokomaru.)The whole series is a parody of just about everything y...

New Jersey Assembly members Alison Littell McHose (R-Sussex/Hunterdon/Morris) and Michael Doherty (R-Warren/Hunterdon) are working with the New Jersey Family Policy Council on a petition drive that seeks to tarnish the Garden State's constitution with a gay marriage ban. And in other news regarding fruitless attempts, a snowball currently residing on the ground in Trenton hopes it has a chance of succeeding in hell. Although unlike the marriage ban, this snowball has no support from the local GOP, as it can not be as easily molded into a political football that can be tossed around during this year's elections. ¿Por qué consentimos las cleptocracias?
2007-03-07 14:31:00

[It is hard to imagine a worse scenario than the following.  Let us hope that it is a bluff.  Needless to say, were Israel to launch such an attack it would mean the loss of many Iranian lives — unlike the 1981 hit on a surface Iraqi plant.  Presumably some of the following things would ...
Lord Falconer - human rights are "clouded by nonsense".
2007-02-09 15:15:00
Lord Falconer is to ask for a more "common sense" approach as to how human rights lawsare interpreted by public bodies. In a speech to be given later at Manchester University Lord Falconer will say the Human Rights Act needs to be explained to public rights workers, due to the Act being "clouded by nonsense".Conservative leader David Cameron has said the Tories would scrap the Act altogether, replacing it with a British Bill of Rights to protect UK citizens.Liberal Democrat MP, David Heath, said: "It is unfortunate that it has taken so long for government ministers to defend their flagship legislation.Tony Blair condemned a High Court ruling returning nine asylum seekers who hijacked a plane at Stansted, to Afghanistan as an abuse of common sense. The Commons joint select committee on human rights have warned Ministers to stop using the act as a "convenient scapegoat" for government failings. This follows several instances where the rights of criminals have been seen to be put above ...

Yuri Anime: 2x2 Shinobuden, the Nonsense Kunoichi Fiction
2006-12-02 14:59:57
After nearly two weeks of turning the yuri goggles on full power and still having to squint, I need to write about something with *actual* yuri in it.2x2 Shinobuden, the Nonsense Kunoichi Fiction, is just the thing to cure my "where's the yuri?" blues. The plot of Shinobuden can be summed up in two words - "Wackiness ensues." While this is not my favorite plot in the universe, Shinobuden is a cute example of this very tired breed.Shinobu is a young, well-endowed female ninja (the Kunoichi of the title) in training. She lives in a compound with a host of male ninjas and their master, a yellow ball with the name of Onsokumaru. The combined intelligence and maturity of all the ninjas and Onsokumaru appears to be about that of a 12 years old boy. The guys are all typical incompetent peverts, Shinobu is the typical sweet, clueless innocent. Wackiness ensues. The yuri interest is Shinobu's friend Kaede. For a change, Kaede is not engaged in a one-sided love for Shinobu, it's the other wa...
World Wide Legal Age of Consent
2006-12-01 15:02:04
times;">SSit back and close your eyes, ‘Cause what I have to say is a big surprise. The unspokeable is as clear as day. And would make any of us run far away. Without any further adieu, I present, A Table of World Wide Age Consent, to all of you.. Staying Alive Press PLAY Download audio file (Staying%20Alive.mp3) If more than one age is given then the law within that country or state varies according to region or circumstances. In particular, some countries have regional laws that may overrule the federal law. Also in some cases the age of consent is lower when partners are of a similar age. Where the symbol ? is used, information is either incomplete or unavailable. In some countries the age of consent is higher for those taking part in commercial sex. In many countries the age of consent is higher when one partner is in a position of trust with regard to the other, or when one partner takes advantage of the other’s immaturity. Age of consent laws often do not apply ...
The ?proportional response? nonsense
2006-10-13 20:03:03
The notion of proportional response stems from misunderstanding. Punishments are only statistically proportional.  Years-long imprisonment is clearly disproportional to the harm a particular tax evader does to society. Shooting a petty thief who tries to escape from prison is out of proportion to his crime. The concept that no one should be singled out for prosecution is wrong. In practice, societies always use punishment to drive an example home to criminals. All offenders cannot be caught, and all offenses cannot be feasibly investigated. Societies punish to statistically discourage repetition. Crime must be statistically unprofitable. A single offense for which the offender is sentenced must wipe out his profits from a string of offenses. When only a few members of his trade are routinely caught, such as with tax evaders, the harsh exemplary punishment discourages other takers.  The concept of statistical punishment is clear in the Bible: thieves have to restitute two to five t...
A Study in Nonsense.
2006-08-11 21:12:01
Science can provide so many positive things in this world, but unfortunately it can also provide a lot of crap.  Science is effective when it is thorough and well thought out and comprehensive - like the theory of gravity and natural selection.  Then you get popcorn science which accounts for many of the so-called “studies” that seek to show causes for things like behavior. Take this recent study.  According to this Washington Post article,  “Teenagers who regularly listen to music lyrics with explicit references to casual sex are more likely to initiate sexual intercourse and take part in other sexual activity, compared with those who do not listen to such music.” This is the same kind of logic that was responsible for the PMRC as well as the idea that Bugs Bunny and other violent cartoons cause children to be violent. But this is one of the key areas where you HAVE to turn on your critical thinking skills. It’s way too easy to take this study or a do...
Davinci nonsense
2006-05-29 17:04:00
Honestly if I hear much more about the movie the DaVinci Code I'm going to hurl. Funny thing is, I'm a conspiracy theory nut, I love to get sucked into them. A few of them I believe...(CFR/Illuminati type stuff). Those I don't believe I like to pretend I do for a while just to see where it will take me. I have a very good imagination and general distrust for the way things appear to be.I also know that it takes alot to shake my faith. A severe personal Crisis a long time ago galvanised things for me in such a way that well I'd have to be given divine knowledge before I admitted that my faith was based on a false premise. I'm grateful for that. But at the same time I think that if it hadn't happened I still would not be shaken by DaVinci Code. If your faith is shaken by fictional ramblings then it isn't very strong or real at all.Who knows. I might read the book one day if I'm bored. I'm not going to go see the movie, I don't really want to feed into the mass media frenzy a...
