Hello From Niagara Falls, Ontario - A City of Lights and Magic
2008-06-02 07:41:00
SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: It had been an exciting day already: my helicopter ride with Niagara Helicopter had given me a close-up aerial view over Niagara Falls and my visit to the Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory had made for a perfect winter escape to a tropical sanctuary. But more adventure was yet to come.Appropriately strengthened from my very late lunch at "The Famous", a 24-hour upscale diner at the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort, I was ready for my evening explorations. First on the menu was the Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights. Every year from early November to early January, more than 125 animated lighting displays decorate the city. In total more than three million lights illuminate the Niagara Parks Winter Wonderland.Rate and Review : Hello From Niagara Falls, Ontario - A City of Lights and Magic

Big Deal: Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) Switches to Paper Bags, Ma
2008-05-28 13:00:00
When it comes to purchasing alcoholic bevvies in our home province, there is only one game in town and that is the retail equivalent of Dodge Ball, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO). When Ontarians speak of going to "The Beer Store", or "The Liquor Store" it is not due to some inherent Canadian fondness for speaking in generalities, but an actual trademark reflecting the incredible heights of the government's creativity. The LCBO holds a government monopoly over the sale of alcohol. To suggest that this should be otherwise is practically a form of apostasy and categorically dismissed not only by the folks who benefit from such an arrangement (the cashiers who lug your cold ones out of storage for $29 an hour in the case of the Beer Store), but by digit waggers who believe that corner store hawkers would be less than diligent about checking for ID (kinda like R Kelly) and that society would descend into oil-drum fire burning, Hobbesian lawlessness.Of course, these are the sa...

Smokers beware: Ontario to enact auto smoking ban to protect children
2008-05-02 21:02:00
Smokers beware: Ontario to enact auto smoking ban to protect children The government of Ontario introduced a bill last Wednesday that calls for a smoking ban in cars when children are present. If the legislation is made into law, it will make it illegal to smoke in any vehicle while a person 16 years old or younger is a passenger. Moreover, the proposal covers pretty much any scenario — whether the car is moving or stationary and would apply even if a smoker had a window, sunroof, roof, door or other feature open. The fine for such an offense would be 250 Canadian dollars. Ontario would not be the first to enact such a law as Nova Scotia, Yukon, Arkansas, California, Maine, Louisiana, Puerto Rico, South Australia and Tasmania already have similar legislation in place, according to Canadian Driver.

The Ontario Linux Fest was announced for 25 October 2008, so don't make any plans for that day in case you are in Ontario or its surroundings! Judging by the feedback received from last year's edition, the Linux Fest scheduled for October might be very successful. The location for Ontario Linux Fest 2008 will be the "Days" Hotel and Conference Center, Toronto Airport East. If you attended last year's Ontario Linux Fest, you will come across some things that are already familiar, such as the "Hands On Demo Room" and "Birds of a Feather Sessions". A welcome party, just like the one from Ontario Linux Fest 2007, plus a wrap-up reception will make things even more fun.The exhibition area and the dot-org pavilion that you encountered at the 2007 edition, made their way into this edition too. To make things even more interesting, a third presentation room was added, and you will have to choose from a lot more topics and presenters. The Ontario Linux Fest is an event that brings together ...

BMXfu20 jam... I made into Buffalo yesterday a little later than expected... Kerry Sayre at rise above had a pretty comfy couch.. I rolled into Buffalo about 4 o'clock, after finding a place to stash my 420 supplies and multiple texts with international roaming charges, I finally made it to the Spot that everyone was at..shit there must have been 50 people there. Oh. I forgot to mention the brownie I ate just before I crossed the border.. so I am starting to feel the brownie when I arrived. Charlie Crumlish (god bless him) rolled over and met up with me. after smoking a nice sized Blunt, Of which I only had a pull off of due to the brownie really hitting me at this point, we then started to ride.. well they rode I watched. there is something about being in a different country and around different people that makes me not want to ride high. UAW strike at American Axle forces GM to eliminate shift at Ontario plant
2008-04-22 00:48:00
UAW strike at American Axle forces GM to eliminate shift at Ontario plant The UAW strike at American Axle continues to be the thorn in General Motors' side as the strike has caused yet another production delay for the Detroit-based automaker. A shortage of axles has forced GM to eliminate one shift at its Oshawa, Ontario production facility. GM's Oshawa plant produces the Buick LaCrosse and the Chevrolet Impala – one of Chevrolet's best-selling models. In addition to the slowdown in Oshawa, GM also announced that the strike has caused it to slow production of its four-speed transmission at the company's Ypsilanti Township, Michigan plant. In all, the strike has caused GM to slow or idle production at 30 plants. In addition to the UAW strike at American Axle, the UAW is striking GM's Lansing Delta plant, which produces the GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook and Buick Enclave.

The area is so strong economically that the Real Estate Investment NetworkTM research team has dubbed it the "Economic Alberta of Ontario".2. Northern Ontario Poet
2008-04-20 16:34:00
This Sundays work of poetry is from a writer located in my neck of the woods or at least close by it. Charlie Smith is a farmer/poet whose works are found in a series of collection and has been featured on CBC radio throughout Canada. Anyway I have read almost all of his works and he definitely adds a different voice to the poetry landscape. Here is one of his works:ResurrectionI am writing a poem in the taggy old field:Turn down the alders and grin —When was the last time it sang of its yield? The spruce whisper, “Long has it bin;Long as a lifetime, long as a log,Many a winter did nest.”But I plow down the poplar, the chokecherry bush,The whispering spruce and the rest.I find the old furrows and strike out anew;I sing to the red diesel roar,And the field heaves her bosom and flexes her arms,And the sod on the mull-boards says, “More!”I am writing a poem and my black lines are straight,A rhyme that a dead man can see;And he circles the edges just out of my sight,And he w...

Toyota intimidates employees in Ontario: union

Toyota intimidates employees in Ontario: union A statement from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union on Monday alleges Toyota sent a communication to employees at the Cambridge, Ontario plant that is unlawful. The message swayed workers from voting for a union, a a for which a representation election is planned for Thursday. According to union spokesman Bill Trbovich, the Machinists filed a complaint with Ontario?s Labour Relations Board. The message ?crossed the line set by the law, which prevents employers from intimidating and unduly influencing employees to vote against a union,? the IAMAW statement said, according to The Detroit News. Toyota plans to challenge the union to prove it has enough signed cards and will request a sealed vote, at least until labor officials make a judgment, the company said on Saturday. Over 40 percent of workers at the plant indicated they are in favor of a union during a November card collection, said IAM...

Barrie Zwicker on TV Ontario - 02/13/08
2008-02-16 05:47:00
Thanks 911blogger and Reprehensor for this! On Wednesday, February 13th, Barrie Zwicker was invited to be a guest on the publicly funded TV Ontario television program, "The Agenda with Steve Paikin". The episode was originally billed as "Paranoid Political Imagination - Understanding conspiracy theories: Why do some people see things that most don't", this was on Monday the 11th. The "agenda" seems to have been to have Zwicker on the show, showcase him as a paranoid "Conspiracy Theorist" and then have a panel follow up and explain why he was a paranoiac. However, Zwicker was so damn good in the opening segment with Paikin, that the episode was re-named, "Barrie Zwicker - Conspiracy Anyone?", and split into two distinct segments, the first with Zwicker, called "The Interview - Fact or fiction? Writer Barrie Zwicker on the real story behind 9/11", and the second segment a rather typical establishment rationalization of "Conspiracy Theories" called "The Debate: Conspiracy Anyone? - Wh...

Ice Fishing In Ontario
2008-02-11 23:15:00
Ontario is Canada's number one fishing destination. Ontario is an "Iriquoian" word meaning beautiful or shining waters. As Ontario has some 250,000 lakes there is plenty of beautiful shiny water about. Most people know it as a fisherman's paradise in summer but don't forget it has a great winter season too. Why not consider ice fishing in Ontario this winter?Fishing in winter is more of an adventure holiday. For the Canadians it is an everyday event and no big deal to cut a hole in the ice and start fishing or to haul out an ice fishing hut and in comfort. For everyone reading who is not from North America you probably won't know much about ice fishing or ever have considered it for a winter holiday. But for all you keen fishermen and women out there it is a fantastic experience that you should not miss. You can chose literally any type of holiday you want and combine it with some ice fishing. The lakes and rivers are so numerous that wherever you chose to stay you are going to b...
