Inner Ignoring of ?Warning Flags? Prior To Dissent From A Sect
2009-10-28 22:12:00 There is an ignoring, while one is still a member a questionable group, of what apostates, looking back on their process, have called 'warning flags'. The rationalising and psychological denial factors loom, but not so large as to cause deeper questioning and leave-taking. These are phenomena widely encountered in the reports of dissenters from sects. I have written of this aspect in an article, where I wrote: "Since leaving Sathya Sai Baba in October 1999, I have counted around 10 major ?flags? that I myself ignored. The realization of most of these resistances only occurred over time. Coming out of the spell?s grip is a painful, arduous process". See: A Cult?s Powerful Grip. An Open Letter to Steve Ballmer: Didn't Your Mother Teach You To Say "Thank
2009-10-07 17:58:00 Seriously, Mr. Ballmer, your lack of gratitude to your best friend in the Linux community is appalling. I am talking about Ken "Helios" (named after the Greek god of the sun) Starks, who has recently helped defeat your main competitor a little further this year. I know that Linux sometimes worries you, though you may laugh it off in public. This year, Mr. Starks pulled off a real coup. He collected money as donations from the Linux community, then paid big bucks to a radio station to run a scratchy, echoey, low-fi "radio commercial" for Linux. But hold on! Not just any radio program, but the commercial slot during Kim Komando's show - a long-time Microsoft advocate. So the ad dollars literally went into your pocket - straight from desktop Linux users all over the world! Isn't that sweet for you, Mr. Ballmer? But that's just the beginning. By collecting money, time, and resources out of the limited reserves of the Linux user base, Starks has ensured that funds which could have ...
An Open Letter to Manuel Contreras-Galdean
2009-09-24 00:42:00 Mr. Contreras-Galdean: On November 15, 2008, you killed Kelly Tracy. This was, according to some reports, the third time you?ve been ...
An Open Letter to the Communications Pros with the Caps
2009-09-22 12:45:00 To: Nate Ewell Paul Rovak Kelly Murray - Mike Vogel Brett Leonhardt CC: Kurt KehlMonday brought me back to the real world of laboring for the Man, instead of reporting to Kettler again for more of my favorite vacation: Capitals' training camp. Like the late Jack Falla, I don't believe there's such a thing as a bad day at the rink, and last week, being welcomed and so helpfully assisted by you as I was, well reminded me of why this was so. This was easily the largest Capitals' training camp in its number of skaters that I'd ever covered, and you have 70 quality human being hockey players who wore your crest last week. I talked to almost every one of them. In the middle of my vacation at the rink I thought about those middle-aged men who fork over vast sums of money to participate in pro sports fantasy camps, for limited access to their ballfield heroes. Last week at ...

An Open Letter to the Fruit Company That Ruined Breakfast
2009-09-21 00:22:00 Usually when people are unemployed for months at a time, they start to dream up get-rich-quick schemes. Hence, the alarming success of Nigerian presidents ready to wire money to your checking account TODAY. The thing is - I'm the only person alive who seems to come up with get-rich-slowly schemes. It started in high school when I decided I would devote my life to becoming the jerk who waves in the backgrounds of other people's home movies. My thought was that with enough time and effort, I would become rich and famous as, the world over, friends shared their home videos and noticed me waving from Peru, Disney World and their daughter's play."Gee, Sally, that's funny. I think that same girl waving behind...

Open Letter to a Former Friend
2009-09-01 19:00:00 Dusty, So it goes without saying that talking politics with friends can be a risky business. Friends can be lost and enemies made that way. It is sad, of course. But at the same time, I fervently believe that friends and family should be able to talk about politics, religion, and many other issues without tensions ...

An Open Letter to the Big Five Networks, Re: Summer TV
2009-06-24 09:46:00 Dear ABC CBS, FOX, NBC and the CW, Yesterday, the NY Times Media Decoder Blog revealed that “the four major broadcast network are performing abysmally across the board in viewers between the ages of 18 and 49, posting the lowest combined ratings in that category ever for the four networks.” Translation: Audience levels for network summer fare are sinking faster than this TV Addict’s confidence in HEROES since Bryan Fuller’s surprise announcement on Monday. Which naturally begs the slightly awkward albeit painfully obvious question: If television is habitual (see: the success of CBS’ entire roster of aging procedurals) why are you spending all summer long doing your best to inexplicably break said habit courtesy of a painfully uninteresting mix of reruns (see: last night’s sked which included repeats of THE MENTALIST, HOUSE, NCIS and 48 HOURS) and reality TV (see: I’M A CELEBRITY… GET ME OUT OF HERE, THE SUPERSTARS and AMERICA’S GOT ...

The CW Responds to Our Open Letter to Dawn Ostroff
2009-06-18 15:47:00 In response to our Open Letter to Dawn Ostroff that we posted yesterday, CW Executive Vice President, Network Communications Paul McGuire left a comment that we wanted to bring to everyone’s attention. (And not just because we think it’s really really cool that the who’s who of Hollywood reads theTVaddict.com!) Wait until you all see the new shows. Life UneXpected and Vampire Diaries are classic WB and perfect for CW. Life will remind many of Felicity, Gilmore and Juno. Melrose Place is just plain Fun. Full disclosure–I work for The CW. I also worked at The WB, including Everwood, GG, Smallville et. al, and our new shows have great potential. It isn’t easy building a network–especially in the digital age–but we are well on our way. See what you think a year from now. Thank you. Thoughts?

An Open Letter to Dawn Ostroff, President of Entertainment The CW
2009-06-17 18:03:00 Dawn Ostroff, New York City, May 2009 In looking at current hits like GOSSIP GIRL and 90210, not to mention upcoming trashfests MELROSE PLACE and THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE, this TV Addict can’t seem to shake the feeling that you’ve completely lost touch with your network’s roots. That thought became all the more apparent after spending this past weekend enjoying the emotional roller-coaster that was EVERWOOD’s second season. Seriously, what’s happened to the once proud CW… once home to GILMORE GIRLS, FELICITY and even 7TH HEAVEN, each of which, in their own ways, defined outstanding television. These shows entertained, enlightened and surprised us with their ability to illicit laughter, summon up tears and even, on occasion, teach us a thing or two about ourselves and the world in which we live. Say what you will about the off-charts-preachiness of Reverend Camden and his 7TH HEAVEN flock, but creator Brenda Hampton raised more social issues than anyone since th...

2009-03-18 18:03:00 Before BATTLESTAR GALACTICA reaches what will hopefully be a thrilling conclusion this Friday, the TV Addict wanted to take this opportunity to leave you with five choice words: Please don’t Frak this up. Because the truth is, we’d be lying if we said we weren’t worried. Not only have these final string of episodes been a massive letdown in the edge-of-your-seat-excitement department, what you yourself had to say about the importance of ‘plot’ in a recent interview with BSG uber-critic Maureen Ryan does little to assuage our fears. An Open Letter to the Winchester Brothers
2009-02-05 19:07:00 By: The REEL Addict Dear Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, As you two know, I’m a great admirer of your show SUPERNATURAL, and the consistent acting talent you display on it. With the emotional and dramatic range you guys bring to each and every episode, you’ve helped turned a show that could have potentially been little more than shallow, gimmicky horror-movie-a-week-fest into something richer. You’ve ensured that SUPERNATURAL is not a series about the supernatural so much as the people fighting the supernatural. People who are dramatic, and complex, and whom you bring to emotional life with your performances. You prove yourselves to be nothing less than great actors, ones who deserve a successful, rewarding career beyond the boob tube and on the big screen. Which brings us to the problem at hand. (more…)

an open Letter to NFL PLAYER reps and the NFLPA executive Board
2009-01-24 17:43:00 Dear NFLPA Executive Committee Members and Player Representatives: As you know, a class action suit was filed against the NFLPA and a jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff class of retired NFL players who had signed a "Retired Player Group License Agreement". It should be noted that the acting Director of the NFLPA, Richard Berthelson was a key witness for the NFLPA, but despite his testimony, the jury found that the NFLPA had breached its fiduciary responsibility and their duty to market retired players and compensate them for the use of their images. The verdict was for $7.1 million in compensatory damages and $21 million in punitive damages. After the trial, the lawyers for the NFLPA filed a motion to set aside the verdict. After careful consideration of all the facts, Judge Alsup denied all post-trial motions from the NFLPA's lawyer, Jeffrey Kessler. In Judge Alsup's ruling, he made a few statements that summed up the reason he thinks the jury came to the decision they ma...

On the other hand, I’d like to remind the two of you that you are not running BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. You don not have a mere 10 episodes remaining to wrap up your story (you’ve got 30.) 2009-01-11 09:00:00 by Emily Kagan TrenchardJust a few days after, one of the wealthiest men in Germanydid it because he had lost his fortune to a con artist. There was a man in Texas who did it after Americawatched him ask a 13 year old for a blow job on television. In fact, when a naked man, crazed, standing on the roof of a buildingin Brooklyn threatened a group of police officers with a neon light bulb –the kind with the long incessant buzz and the ability to washaway your life under its glow – when this shriveled threat of a manwas tasered and fell off the roof to his death, the commanding officeron the scene did it. Not the cop who pulled the trigger. And I bet your wondering about him, too.About that beat cop who took the order, unsnapped the taser from his belt, shot it and thought, "Maybe this will shock some sense into the guy,"A good joke he planned to share with the boys after they got the hell off that roof. That cop who grinned as all that naked chaos stumbled backward, tugging at the blue-...

Usbeing the black people of the Southern United States. You think youknow, because you are thoughtful, and you have studied our history. But seeing you deliver the torch so many others before you carried, year after year, decade after decade, century after century, only tobe struck down before igniting the flame of justice and of law, isalmost more than the heart can bear. And yet, this observation is notintended to burden you, for you are of a different time, and, indeed, because of all the relay runners before you, North America is adifferent place. It is really only to say: Well done. We knew, throughall the generations, that you were with us, in us, the best of thespirit of Africa and of the Americas. Open letter to John McCain: Bureaucrats and Health Care
2008-09-09 05:24:00 What would you advise, my friend? You say you?re in favor of changing everything that?s wrong in Washington, you?re trying to reclaim your old label as a maverick, and distance yourself as far as you can from Bush after voting with him about 90% of the time - but leaving health care the way it is because Obama thought up changing it first? That's toadying up to the lobbyists from big insurance companies, that's politics as usual, and believe me, maverick, our health care system ISN'T working for everybody. Here's a story of how insurance-based health care decisions worked against a woman who suffered nerve damage during the birth of her second child. Health Partners changed her medication/treatment without consulting her records, or her doctor... no medical professionals were involved, just a clerk delivering news that her treatment was no longer eligible for coverage because nobody at Health Partners took the time to even read her diagnosis, let alone get a proper medical eval...

Honey Raspberry Semifreddo And An Open Letter
2008-08-18 06:34:00 Foreword: I have tossed and turned words for the past couple of days writing this post. I know this is a food blog, but over the past few years that I have written here, I have also shared with you the joys and sorrows of life. It has become more than just desserts since I come every week with stories out the wazoo, so I hope you will allow me to make this post about one person whom I lost and love and celebrate his memory. One person whose passing changed me radically in every thing I do and every way I see things. This is an open letter to my belated brother, one that I start and rewrite every year around the same time, one that will never end being re-written. I also thought about not posting at all, but one of our best memories shared was around dessert and it made sense to me to write it today. If this is not your cup of tea, skip to the recipe part.Dear Thierry,There are many dates forever engraved in my mind. The day you gave me a tiny white watch and a bright fuchsia scarf f...

With the assistance of some very dedicated individuals, we were able to give Dr. Paul the highest percentage of votes in the state in our area of concentration, Athens/Clarke county Georgia. After reading the AJC article by Aaron Gould Sheinin this morning on how awful you all were treated at the GOP state convention, I was compelled to write this letter. For some of you, this past year was the first time you became active in politics. 2008-05-17 23:45:00 Dear Libertarian Party Delegate: As a delegate from the great state of Georgia, I am writing to ask that you vote for former Georgia Congressman Bob Barr as our nominee for President of these United States. I first became acquainted with Mr. Barr when I moved to Georgia in 2001 and he was serving at that time as a Republican member of Congress. My impression of him was that he was a strong social conservative who had an impassioned commitment to our fundmental right to privacy from the government as guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. In other words, he didn't fit the typical social conservative mold which is more than eager to sacrifice liberty for security at any cost, as witnessed by the Patriot Act and other unprecedented assaults on our right to privacy. After Mr. Barr was gerrymandered out of his House seat in 2003, I witnessed a transformation and evolution from conservative to libertar...
