Ballet review: The Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House
2009-01-05 17:27:00 Whilst there is no avoiding the trials and tribulations of “modern times” there is the chance to escape and to visit a world which whilst it certainly is not without stress or tension, is joyous to behold and a delight to listen to. This is the world of The Nutcracker - surely one of the ...

The building is located in about 87,000m² of gardens with 10,000m² covering reflecting pools and interlinked surrounding paths. The building is over 70m in height with 40,000m² in total floor area. The roof or 'feather plume' is the most spectacular, and is 230m in length. Introduction to Travel in Sydney, Australia
2008-06-04 10:49:00 Sydney, New South Wales The impact on the city was all-embracing, with fifty years’ worth of development compressed into four years under the pressure of intense international scrutiny. Transport infrastructure was greatly improved and a rash of luxury hotels and waterside apartments added themselves to the skyline. The City of Sydney Council spent $200 million to ...

Review of Balconies Restaurant (Searcys), Royal Opera House, London
2008-02-22 14:46:00 There are few experiences finer in this world than spending an evening at London's Royal Opera House. For last month's production of 'Die Zauberflote', we decided to go the whole hog and have dinner at Searcy, the restaurant inside the ROH.
PJ Harvey at the Opera House
2008-02-17 07:12:00 I went to to see PJ Harvey on Friday at the Opera House. I have seen three straight shows at this incredible venue (Tori Amos, Bjork, and PJ Harvey). PJ played in the same cool little theater as Tori did on top of the building. She is an odd chick for sure and has a wide range of songs. Some are really dark and melodic while others are 2 minutes of her screaming while slashing away on her guitar. She played solo for most of the show which I find very impressive. It takes some real guts to stand up in front of a big crown all by yourself. I knew most of the songs at the show which was a bit surprising as I am not a huge fan. All in all, she gets a big thumbs up from me!I will never forget when I went to see PJ back in 2001. The concert was a week or so after Sept 11 and I remember telling my friend Karen (who I was going to show with) that I didn't want to go. It didn't feel right to be seeing a concert at such a terrible time. In the end we decided to go and I am so glad we did. Sh...
The Opera House and Another Night Out
2008-02-02 06:06:00 The rains of Queensland were a thing of the past by the time I reached Sydney (and later Melbourne). Bjork at the Opera House
2008-01-26 05:25:00 I went to see the increcibly unusual Bjork perform on the front of the Opera House as part of the month long Sydney Festival. Here is a video that is a bit dark but gives you a little perspective about the set up and atmosphere.I am not a huge fan of Bjork but really enjoyed the show. She is definitely an odd bird but fun to watch. She had another run in with a reporter when she arrived in New Zealand. She really doesn't like to have her picture taken!
Sydney Opera House
2008-01-23 17:03:00 I overslept this morning, but fortunately the sunlight woke me up at 8:20am. Today was going to be a very busy day, and I couldn’t afford to start late! The first stop of the day was the Sydney Opera House. I had purchased a ticket for the tour for the first Sunday of the vacation, but ...
Review - Olivia Newton-John - Live at the Sydney Opera House
2008-01-15 23:39:00 Olivia Newton-John was the darling of the 70's whether recording or appearing as an actress in movies such as Grease and the much criticized Xanadu. Since that time, though, her life has been a series of crisis, from breast cancer to the disappearance of her long-time partner to her daughter's battle with anorexia. That's why it is so great to hear her voice again, at the age of 61, and realize that it truly hasn't lost any of its beauty over the last thirty years. Her recent appearance with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra has been captured for release today on CD as Olivia's Live Hits and on DVD as Olivia Newton-John and the Sydney Symphony: Live at the Sydney Opera House. The twenty-seven song show is broken down into sections highlighting different parts of the singer's career. After opening with Have You Never Been Mellow, it's on to three songs from the soundtrack of Xanadu, including the title songs and the mega-hit Magic. It's during the song Xanadu that the brillianc...

Sydney Opera House Guided Tour
2007-11-07 14:02:00 The Sydney Opera House has developed a new guided tour called “the essential tour.” Since their backstage tour costs A$150, I had pretty much written it off. The essential tour, however, only costs A$27.50, or A$25 if you’re willing to go between 9-10AM. At that price, I’ll definitely go on the ...

Tori Amos at the Opera House
2007-09-27 11:12:00 This week, I went to see Tori Amos perform at the Sydney Opera House. Tori has been one of my favorite artists for years. I think I have seen her 11 or 12 times over the past 15 years. I was looking forward to seeing her (concerts are always fun) but was really excited to make my first visit inside the Opera House.I went to the show with my friend Paul who is also a pretty big fan. We grabbed a quick bite to eat and headed to the show. I have been in Sydney for over a year but have somehow never made it inside this major attraction. She performed in one of the small theaters (there are several) at the very top of the building. We had great seats on the left side of the stage in one of the boxes. We could see her perfectly thoughout the show. She came out and did her typical entrance, running across the stage, waving to the audience in her own special way. When you see her, you can tell that she is kind of a nut job but also the epitome of a true artist. This was her last show in Austr...

Aussie Open at the Opera House
2007-03-02 03:41:02 Here are a few photos from the steps of the Opera House. I watched both the mens and womens Australian Open finals here. The big screen. My friend John.Little old me.American Express sets up this event at all four of the grand slams. Basically they create a little tennis fest with the big screen, a bunch of reserved seating (for AmEx card holders), and some tennis activies. A couple years back, I watched a couple matches at this event in NYC. Last year, I sat on the Opera House steps and watched Amelie Mauresmo win the Aussie Open. It is a fun way to watch the matches if you can't be there yourself. On Saturday, I headed over to watch Serena Williams destroy Maria Sharapova. It was a really windy day and not many fans were at the event so the ushers were letting non AmEx card holders (like me) sit in the reserved seating. I watched the match and then headed off to do some shopping. On Sunday, I convinced John to come along and watch Roger Federer play Fernando Gonzalez. What a differen...
Sydney Opera House, Sydney, Australia
2006-12-02 15:47:01 Sydney Opera House is one of the most distinctive and famous 20th century buildings with a roof evocative of a ship at full sail, and one of the most famous performing arts venues in the world . Situated closed to the enormous Sydney Harbour Bridge, the building and its surroundings form an iconic Australian image. Because of the unique design, the building process was long and fraught with difficulties. It started construction in 1595 and eventually opened to the public in 1973, 14 years after it was started. Costs had spiralled massively from $AUS 7 million to $AUS 102 million, and public hostility to the project had grown accordingly. The complex is home to two main auditoriums; the Opera Theatre (the smaller of the two larger "sails") and a Concert Hall. There is also a Drama Theatre, Studio and Playhouse, making it Sydney's most comprehensive cultural centre.
