Researchers at the Human Media Laboratory, Queen’s University in Canada are developing prototypes of new “non-planar” devices, which are virtually computers that have a flexible shape. Computers are nifty, but often too bulky to be carried around. Even a laptop is too big to put in your pocket, but imagine if your computer looked and ...

2008-06-07 00:55:00
More ‘authentic’ screenshots of Microsoft’s latest in the making Windows: Windows 7, these screenshots look to match the ones we posted just about a week ago. But there is some speculation that these screenshots do not actually represent the exact same Windows 7 we might expect to see in 2009-2010 simply because these pics are ...

Operating Systems Design and Implementation
2008-05-29 13:08:00
Most books on operating systems deal with theory while ignoring practice. While the usual principles are covered in detail, the book describes a small, but real UNIX-like operating system: MINIX. The book demonstrates how it works while illustrating the principles behind it. Operating Systems: Design and Implementation Second Edition provides the MINIX source code. The relevant selections of the MINIX code are described in detail. When it first came out, MINIX caused something of a revolution. Within weeks, it had its own newsgroup on USENET, with 40,000 people. Most wanted to make MINIX bigger and fancier. Instead, Linux was created. That has become quite popular, very large, and complicated. MINIX, on the other hand, has remained small and suitable for instruction and example. The book has been revised to include updates in MINIX, which started out as a v 7 unix clone for a floppy-disk only 8088. It is now aimed at 386, 486, and pentium machines and is based on the international p...

In the world of open-source operating systems, first impressions count
2008-04-26 01:47:00
One of the reasons the Ubuntu project is doing so well is that it puts a cleaner, slightly more polished face on what starts out as Debian. The new user doesn't know that Ubuntu pulls a lot of packages from Debian Unstable. Instead, they think of the Canonical-run distribution as "a Linux for the rest of us." Sure, marketing is involved, but at the core, Ubuntu is a fairly solid system -- mostly because it's based on Debian.

Hello my dear readers,A little statistics part first. WHAT A RUSH!!!! That's my response on what happened after I posted my opinion on Ubuntu and Linux. At the beginning there were few responses from Planet Larry where I'm syndicated, as I mostly use Gentoo. Then I submitted it to digg and Linux Today, and until the end of the day in my time zone, it got 424 diggs and more than 5000 visits, which was about a total on this blog until this day from the start. That feels great. Then it came ~5000 more visits the next day, and about 1500 visits the day after that. It have received ~100 comments on my blog, and about 200 on digg.
