Toyota will give $5m and 23 vehicles to National Park support organizations
2008-04-29 00:44:00
At the end of March, when Toyota announced they would give $20m to the National Audubon Society, there was a bit of an uproar. Turns out, Toyota customers were not happy with the works that Audubon was doing to close down certain nature areas to visitors. The PR trouble isn't stopping Toyota from continuing to give money to groups that are looking after the land. Toyota announced today that it will donate a total of $5m and 23 vehicles to various U.S. National Parks. The donations will be used "to enhance environmental leadership and educational programs at parks around the country," according to Toyota's release (read it in full after the jump). The national parks at the Everglades, the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and the Great Smoky Mountains will all see some of the money and were selected based on their work in teaching about the environment, particularly to students and teachers, and to people in inner-city and Native American communities. Gates talks Google, Vista and (maybe) Yahoo
2008-04-25 23:15:00
Microsoft Corp.'s unsolicited bid to acquire Yahoo Inc. is still up in the air, but maybe it's inevitable in the eyes of Bill Gates. During an appearance Friday afternoon at the University of Washington, the Microsoft chairman at one point referred to his company as if it were second in Internet search. In reality, Microsoft is in third place in search market share -- although it would move into second place, still well behind Google, if it's able to bring Yahoo into its fold. "Often if you're No. 2 -- and in this case, a distant No. 2 -- you can try harder, so to speak, and try out new things that are quite different," Gates said when discussing Microsoft's technological ambitions in Internet search. Whether it was a slip or a sign of Microsoft's determination to finish the deal, the comment was the closest Gates came to even alluding to the acquisition drama. But he touched on many other topics during the event ? which felt like a combination homecoming and farewel...

The Advantages of Managed Hosting for Large Organizations
2008-04-21 23:58:00
Managed Hosting is not a new concept. But it certainly is a growing trend among large organizations. An increasing amount of these organizations are switching over from their traditional web hosting providers and are shifting towards Managed Hosting. Many of these companies are reaping the benefits that Managed hosting can offer. These benefits include but are not limited to: - Increased site security; - The ability to control the programs and features their users have access to; - Permanent up-time; - The ability to perform updates and patches to programs on multiple computers all at the same time; - Increased server speed and processing time; - Savings in time and money! These Managed services can drastically improve the operational efficiency and security of a large organization?s site. This is made possible because companies that use Managed hosting do not share their digital space with users outside of their network. This occurs because Managed hosting utilizes a dedicated serv...
Microsoft to open Apple-like retail shops
2008-04-14 15:29:00
Our sources close to Microsoft have confirmed that the company wants to reach out for the retail market presence. Microsoft wants to open and create many retail shops dedicated exclusive to Microsoft and its products. This is something that Apple did with its many Apple retail stores around the world. Microsoft will put its retail people in the shops with hope that these skilled people will be able to show the true Microsoft experience. We can only guess that the shop will be filled with lot of software, but it?s likely to include some peripheral stuff such as keyboards and mice as well as some MP3 Zune players. You can count on some computers, but the last paragraph is something we suspect not something that has been confirmed. If they put all that we just listed, it will definitely look like a Microsoft copy of Apple retail stores. Maybe even some windows phones? It worked well for Apple, so Microsoft has the chance. Today at Sheraton Hotel Karachi, Microsoft launched their three flagship products(Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008 & SQL Server 2008) as part of their 2008 launch wave. I was fortunate enough to witness the biggest launch of Microsoft and am proud to be a part of history. One of the things I like about such events is the goodies you get for just attending the event so this one was no exceptional: I got free copy of Windows Vista Ultimate and Evaluation copies of all the three newly launched products i.e. Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008 & SQL Server 2008.   Here is a short video showing all the items contained in the launch kit (requires Microsoft Silverlight)   Additionally, pictures can also be seen here(Windows Live Spaces) or here(Flickr). Anonymous Wins Victory For Grassroots Organizations Everywhere
2008-03-14 11:57:00
Remember the anti-Church of Scientology group Anonymous? Apparently they're still around, still going strong, and still making the Church so nervous that they've filed lawsuits against the members of the group in a Florida court. According to the St. Petersburg Times article by Peter Farley, the Scientologist hierarchy filed for an "injunction for protection against repeat violence." This legal filing was done in anticipation of an upcoming Anonymous protest against the Church of Scientology in Clearwater. It would have essentially barred protesters from coming within 500 feet of the building. This is completely outrageous and exactly what the protesters are complaining about in the first place. Here is an effort by the Church to suppress the ability of dissenters to legally and peacefully protest on public sidewalks and public property surrounding the Church. Instead, they are trying to legally force the protesters to stand almost 1/10 of a mile away from the building, where the p...

Why shelters and rescue organizations charge adoption fees?
2008-03-08 14:00:00
We were over at Savings Lives One at a Time the other day and found a great article, "Why Shelters and Rescue Organizations Charge Adoption Fees."Here's a bit of the article...I'm honored to report that Jane at Pet Rescuer Central asked me to do a guest post on her site about why shelters and rescues charge adoption fees. She has kindly permitted me to repost the article here.I often run into people that think they should be able to “adopt†or “rescue†a pet free of charge. After all, they’re saving the animal’s life, right? Why should they have to pay anything when they’re doing that organization a favor by taking the pet off their hands? Plus, giving away those pets, or reducing the fee will encourage more people to adopt, right? These folks are missing the big picture.Shelters and rescue organizations charge adoption fees for three basic reasons: 1) to attempt to recoup a small portion of the cost of rescuing pets, 2) to discourage impulse adoptions, and 3) to keep...

Healthcare Organizations Say Incidents of Data Breaches Growing. Secure In
2008-02-28 07:47:00
Healthcare organizations are beginning to feel the heat.  First, there is the surprise HIPAA security audits the Feds are planning on conducting.  I already blogged about it before, and how it was just a preliminary one.  The exercises to be conducted this year are to figure out how to approach such audits, and affect a list of pre-approved medical centers (pre-approved because they know the audits are coming.  It?s not a total surprise).  However, once the preliminary studies are conducted, the results will be used to expand the audits nationwide.  Unlike the past decade since the law took effect, auditing will be performed to ensure HIPAA compliance.  What?s worrisome, though, is the growing feeling that healthcare organizations are being targeted for information and data theft.  It?s not big, not yet.  However, there are signs that the problem is growing.  A networkworld.com article quotes SecureWorks as seeing an 85% increase i...

I know it's important to get a conservative point of view across, and I realize that con-scholars have to eat; you don't have to scare me with tales of Hillary Clinton, the ACLU, Nancy Pelosi, and Ted Kennedy running roughshod over Washington or Main street like the Rojas Brothers in San Miguel (unless good people like me help stop them with a contribution of $50.00).
