Jays hand Orioles fifth straight loss (AP)
2009-09-22 01:20:00 David Purcey was handed a spot in Toronto's rotation this spring but lasted just five starts before being demoted to the minor leagues. On Monday night, he made his pitch for a longer look in 2010. Lyle Overbay and John McDonald homered, Purcey won for the first time in more than a year and the ...

Dice-K pitches BoSox to sweep of Orioles (AP)
2009-09-20 19:56:00 As long as Boston's starters keep throwing effectively, the Red Sox will have an excellent chance to win — even if their opponent isn't the Baltimore Orioles. Daisuke Matsuzaka extended an outstanding stretch by Boston's rotation, and the Red Sox cruised past the Orioles 9-3 Sunday for a three-game sweep.

Cubs Trade with Orioles!
2009-01-18 21:13:00 An era comes to an end. The cubs have traded oft maligned Center Fielder Felix Pie to the perennial dumping grounds, Baltimore. What we get in return is Garret Olson. He doesn't miss bats well. Hopefully this is just another piece in the Peavy puzzle. I can easily see Hendry flipping Olson and the Indians prospects for this man:Oh yeah, we got some guy named Henry Williamson as well.
Youre Kidding Me. The Orioles Want Richie Sexson?
2008-12-31 03:55:00 Been out all night, but I nearly fell out of the chair when I read this from the Sun's Peter Schmuck.Ok. This guy, I will admit has had a solid major league career; however, his best years might be behind him. He was horrible in 2008, and at this point -- he's simply a low salary, high reward guy who you hope has something left in the tank. From the Sun: The Orioles still are trying to figure out what they'll do at first base this coming season, and they've given some consideration to attempting a salvage operation with former 45-homer guy Richie Sexson. Club officials apparently have had at least one conversation with Sexson's agent, Casey Close, though the depth of their interest is uncertain.Sexson's offensive numbers have been in steep decline for the past couple of years, but he might be a worthwhile gamble if he's willing to take an incentive-laden contract. He turned 34 yesterday, so he would definitely be a temporary fix, but he has hit 30 or more homers six times in h...

The New Economic Reality May Hit The Orioles
2008-12-21 03:26:00 Just read this on Peter Schmuck's blog, and this really, really caught my eye.I have been a victim of the changing economic times -- albeit, in a minor fashion -- however, it looks like it may affect the Baltimore Orioles for next season.Well, we all don't have access to the company books, nor do we know if the team made or lost money in 2008; alas, it looks like there's going to be some financial tightening taking place at the Yard. The Baltimore Sun: If you doubt that baseball teams are going to feel the effects of the economic downturn, I'm hearing that the Orioles recently notified game-day employees that they are downsizing their stadium staff for the upcoming season and will need many of them only for the higher-attendance games.I know some staff who work there -- whether they are ushers, or people who work the various concession stands -- and some are retirees, some just love the ambiance of Camden Yards, and for others it is supplemental income on top of their everyday jo...

Finally, A Red Sox Sweep...Boston Red Sox 5 Baltimore Orioles 4
2008-09-04 11:13:00 The Boston Red Sox did what they hadn't done in a long time...complete a three game sweep of an opponent. The game was a major league tying 544th straight Fenway Park sellout. The final score was Boston 5 Baltimore 4, and the Orioles are as hapless and helpless as they've been in a long, long time. The Birds were ahead of the Sox 4-0 through six innings before Boston came to life with a bang, actually a few bangs and two bings. Two runs in the seventh, two more in the eighth and the winning run in the ninth were all Boston needed to get out of town on a winning note. Dustin "Pedey" Pedroia had another inspired and productive day, going 3-4 with a HUGE home run in the seventh inning. Pedey's stats over the past few games are astounding. Mark Kotsay had a two run triple in the eighth, the inning that the Red Sox tied it, and then there came the ninth. Javy Lopez and Justin Masterson held the fort in relief of an erratic and pitch heavy Daisuke Matsuzaka, who clearly did not have hi...
BOSTON BOMBS BIRDS...Red Sox 14 Orioles 2
2008-09-03 10:29:00 It was a Boston Red Sox slugfest Tuesday evening at Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts as the Red Sox overwhelmed the Baltimore Birds by a score of 14-2. And it was the numbers three and four Red Sox hitters that did most of the damage. Big Papi David Ortiz went 3 for 3 with 4 RBIs and the cleanup hitter (Youk out with back spasms) Dustin "Pedey" Pedroia had another monster night, going 3 for 5 with 5 huge RBIs. Together, they make quite a tandem. Who misses Manny now? Pedroia raised his league leading batting average to .330 after hitting .374 in the month of August. If he's not the AL Player of the Month, I'd be mighty surprised. The club is happy and they're winning. They've won 10 of their last 14 games, and everyone is marveling at the baseball prowess of the pint-sized second baseman called Pedey. Here's what his manager had to say, with Pedey's reply and a comment from new teammate Mark Kotsay...?It was a quick move tonight (to put Pedey in the 4 spot),? Francona said. ...

Buchholz Demoted To Double A Portland...Orioles 11 Red Sox 6
2008-08-21 11:27:00 The Boston Red Sox, who were defeated by the Baltimore Orioles Wednesday night by a score of 11-6, have demoted pitcher Clay Buchholz to their Double A Portland club. It's clear to all of us that he is just not ready to perform at the major league level. Here's what he said after learning his well-deserved fate... "...but the last couple starts, it's hard to think they can give me any more opportunities than they have in this stretch, especially with only a month and a half left in the season and the pennant race as close as it is now. You've got to send guys out there that you believe are going to go out there and give you a win or give you six, seven innings, and I haven't been doing that. So I hate to say it was the right decision, but I believe it was."Peter here, and it was. Boston Holds Baltimore At Bay...Red Sox 6 Orioles 3...**SCHILLING NEWS**
2008-08-19 11:29:00 Jon Lester improved his record to 9-1 since June 5th and led the Boston Red Sox to a much needed 6-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in Baltimore. And Jason Bay provided the power, smashing two home runs and driving in 4 runs. The game was close when Baltimore scored a pair of runs in the 8th inning, but the Sox erased all doubt with 2 runs of their own in the top of the 9th. Lester pitched into the 8th inning and allowed a lone earned run on 4 hits. He struck out 5 and walked only 1. In three words, he was outstanding. Here's what Lester and teammate and batting hero Jason Bay said after the victory..."I don't think my mind-set has changed any since April," Lester said. "More consistent, pound the zone. If you can show guys you're ahead in the zone, they're going to swing at pitches early in the count that aren't necessarily good pitches to hit. I was able to do that tonight.""I'll be honest, I didn't know a lot about him before I got here," Bay said of Lester. "But it's...
