I'm beginning to be a closet you fan. Shhhhhh. Well, flyball already touched on this in her headlines, but it can be stretched out here as well, as unbelievable as it is. The question/statement/bewilderness-: Maybe we were wrong about Jim Edmonds? I mean, check this tidbit out in today's Trib: Jim Edmonds has gone from being released in May to a potential National League Player of the Month in June. The Cubs center fielder is hitting .352 (19-for-54) in June with five doubles, five homers, 18 RBIs a .438 on-base percentage and a .759 slugging percentage. Pretty amazing, considering that this is a guy who was probably one or two 0-4's away from getting his outright release a month ago. The reason for the turnaround is beyond me. Sure, Petco Park is a pitcher's haven, but my 8-year-old cousin could have done better than Jimbo while with the Padres. Here's Edmonds' take (you may need a language decoder for this) on his newfound success: "Winning breeds success, or winning breeds a...

If you come at the king, you best not miss.                                                                                        --Omar Little The most bad-ass fictional character to come out of Baltimore said it best. The Orioles came pretty close to screwing things up last night, but a sudden inability to figure out how to swing the bat let those bastards off lucky. Tonight, the Cubs look to reclaim their territory, Marlo Stanfield-style. Pitching for Chicago is Ted Lilly. After starting out 0-3, he's gone 7-2 over the last 12 starts. He also has 32 strikeouts o...

Orioles Update: "Baltimore" to FINALLY return to the road jerseys
2008-06-02 15:50:00
It appears as though the Baltimore Orioles, who are always too stubborn to admit when they're WRONG, are getting sick of fighting with the fans and are beginning to embrace their fan base. Jeff Zriebec of the Baltimore Sun announced yesterday that the Orioles have petitioned the league to return
Boston Bops Birds - Colon Sharp Enough...Red Sox 9 Orioles 4
2008-06-02 11:31:00
Bartolo Colon won his third straight decision while wearing a Boston uniform and the Red Sox went on a hitting tear, several of them, in fact, and defeated Baltimore 9-4. Another highlight was home run #501 from Manny Ramirez. But Bartolo Colon, who struggled a little bit more than in his first two starts but is clearly what this team needed after Matsuzaka went down, pitched into the 7th inning, giving up 4 earned runs (the last one came in courtesy of Javy Lopez), on 7 hits. He struck out 5 and threw a total of 102 pitches. If he keeps going like this, and he thinks his velocity has not fully returned yet, he will help his club immensely. The O's third base coach, Juan Samuels, said this to Colon as he passed by him yesterday...?I told him, ?You?ve got your sh*t back,? Samuel said."Peter here...well said, Juan. I couldn't have put it better myself. I wonder if the Yankees' front office is kicking themselves for not signing Bartolo to an almost risk-free deal like their bitter a...
It's About Damn Time! 'Baltimore' To Return To Road Jerseys
2008-06-02 01:18:00
If this is true, the clamoring of the fans voices from WNST, Mike, and everyone else has been heard! Well, Rick Maese reports on the Sun website this morning that "Baltimore" will be returning to the road jerseys in 2009.Ten straight years of losing, more than three decades of pining and now finally a big win. In fancy dancing script perhaps? Or maybe in bold block letters? Oh, we can fret the details later. What's important now is this: "Baltimore" is back.Meaningless on paper, puzzling to outsiders, and indescribably important to those whose passions rise and fall with the Orioles. Thirty-six years after the hometown was erased from the chests of Orioles players, it is expected to return next year. While we could sit here and moan about how long it took, about the years of needless hand-wringing and head-scratching, what's the point? The complaints aren't new, the arguments aren't fresh and the reason behind the sudden change isn't exactly clear. But who really cares? Why it to...
Fan Support: Red Sox vs. Orioles & Random Thoughts
2008-06-02 00:54:00
In yet another sad loss, the Orioles were bested by the Evil Empire 1A, the Boston Red Sox, 9-4. Simply put, Brian Burres got shelled as he was attacked by the Red Sox offense early and often on Sunday.Although Luke Scott homered, Baltimore was undone by J.D. Drew, Manny Ramirez's 501st homer, and the return of rotund Bartolo Colon -- who seemingly was left for dead -- until the Red Sox picked him off the scrap heap. Needless to say, Bartolo looked like he was circa 2006, pretty much in control and pitching effectively. You can read the game recap here. This weekend it has been kind of demoralizing to be a Baltimore fan. If you were at Camden Yards and rooted for the black and the orange, you were outnumbered -- perhaps in the ratio of 80/20, or 85/15 in favor of the Boston fans.I know a lot of hate the Red Sox fans who either drive or fly from New England and also have joined the happy, Grateful Dead/Rolling Stones/Pearl Jam-like bandwagon; nevertheless, much of what we have seen th...

Boston Red Sox vs. Baltimore Orioles; May 30th, 2008 - Baltimore, Md.The Baltimore Orioles gave last night?s game away and lost to the Boston Red Sox, 5-2. Despite the loss, the Birds hung in there with the Evil Empire 1A until the bitter end, as our pitching corps inly allowed two runs in the first and then three ? all unearned ? in the 13th thanks for errors by Melvin Mora and Freddie Bynum. They were frustrating to see; however, errors are a part a game ? but you cannot have that happen against a team the caliber of the Red Sox. Mike Lowell and heads up baseball by Boston late doomed the Orioles.

Mayo's Latest: Alvarez, Orioles, Cashner
2008-05-29 22:57:00
MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo has some draft tidbits tonight. The idea has been floated that the Rays could draft Pedro Alvarez with an eye on moving Evan Longoria to second base down the road.  Alvarez's position really shouldn't be a concern - Carlos Pena might be gone by the time he's ready.  Mayo's heard buzz that the Rays have narrowed it down to Alvarez or Buster Posey, despite what Tim Beckham's dad said. Standard speculation is that the O's are looking at Brian Matusz and Justin Smoak, but Mayo's heard there might be a non-Beckham dark horse. The White Sox have Smoak, Yonder Alonso, and perhaps Andrew Cashner on their radar at #8.
