2012-02-09 19:27:00
The Baltimore Orioles have defeated Brad Bergesen in salary arbitration, giving clubs a 3-2 lead over players this year. Bergesen will receive an $800,000 salary this year rather than his request for $1.2 million. Arbitrators Robert Herzog, Mark Burstein and Elizabeth Neumeier made their decision Thursday, a day after hearing arguments.

Right-hander Brad Bergesen and the Baltimore Orioles have argued their cases in salary arbitration. Bergesen asked for a raise from $434,000 to $1.2 million during Wednesday’s hearing, and the Orioles argued he should be paid $800,000. A decision by arbitrators Robert Herzog, Mark Burstein and Elizabeth Neumeier is expected Thursday.

The 27-year-old had his best season last year, ...

The Baltimore Orioles and infielder Robert Andino have agreed to terms on a 1-year deal, avoiding arbitration. The 27-year-old Andino had his best season in 2011, playing the majority of his career-high 139 games at second base for the injured Brian Roberts. He also played third base, shortstop and left field.

Orioles, Cubs Discussed Alfonso Soriano
2012-01-06 15:11:00
The Orioles and Cubs have discussed a trade involving Alfonso Soriano, according to Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported yesterday that a couple of teams have inquired about Soriano and at this point there's no indication that Baltimore GM Dan Duquette is close to adding Soriano to the left field/designated hitter mix. Soriano posted a .244/.289/.469 line with 26 home runs last season and is under contract through 2014. There?s $54MM remaining on the 35-year-old left fielder's contract and his no-trade clause allows him to block trades. The Cubs would presumably have to absorb upwards of $40MM to facilitate a deal. Earlier in the week, they sent Carlos Zambrano to the Marlins, absorbing $15.5MM of his $18MM salary in the process.
Orioles acquire OF Miller from A?s (AP)
2012-01-03 20:32:00
The Baltimore Orioles have obtained outfielder Jai Miller from the Oakland Athletics, who parted with the part-time player for cash considerations. Miller was designated for assignment by Oakland on Dec. 23 after the A’s received four players for pitcher Gio Gonzalez. The 26-year-old Miller went 3 for 12 with a homer and two RBIs for ...

Orioles let OF Scott become free agent (AP)
2011-12-13 06:23:00
The Baltimore Orioles have declined to tender a contract offer to outfielder Luke Scott, who becomes a free agent after an injury-plagued season in which he played only 64 games. The 33-year-old Scott was acquired by Baltimore in the December 2007 trade that sent Miguel Tejada to the Houston Astros. Scott was voted the Orioles’ ...
Orioles' Luke Scott: Baseball's Rush Limbaugh, and Birther Moron
2011-05-28 18:52:00
Where was the Twitter outrage when Baltimore Orioles outfielder Luke Scott announced he was still a birther moron? Yes, even after the White House released President Barack Obama's long-form birth certificate, Scott choose not to believe in basic facts. Yet the media seemed to largely ignore Scott's statement, like they do all of Scott's other insane ramblings that make any thinking person wonder: "does he seriously wear a tin foil hat?" Since Rashard Mendenhall was ostracized, and lost endorsements over his "unique" opinions on global geopolitics and the structural engineering of skyscrapers, it's only fair Scott feel the heat for his equally bats%^t, devoid of reality public statements. Too many people overlook the fact that he actually is a...

The 2010 Orioles, Part 2: What it could be
2010-10-03 19:07:00
Brian Matusz was masterful last night. Six innings pitched, a career-high nine strikeouts and one earned run. The run came on a homerun in the second inning courtesy of Brandon Inge; Matusz did not allow a Tiger reach second base for the rest of his start. Matusz's final line: 10-12, 4.30 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 7.1 K/9. Nice.At the beginning of the year Matusz was on a lot of writer's short-lists for Rookie of the Year, as the Orioles went into their tailspin those thoughts went down with it. But Matusz deserves votes. He deserves to be a serious contender, but I know he won't be. Look at the way Matusz has pitched in the second half: 3.63 ERA, 7-3, 7.9 SO/9. Since Showalter has joined the team in August Matusz has just one loss against seven wins and an ERA of 2.11!Matusz leads American League rookie starters in strikeouts, innings pitched, fewest walks, starts, WHIP and is second only to Wade Davis in ERA by .16. Matusz deserves to be in the Rookie of the Year conversation, and last n...
The Orioles, Tampa and what might be
2010-09-29 17:32:00
With the win this evening the Tampa Bay Rays clenched a playoff spot - something that was little more than a foregone conclusion. Congrats to the Rays and their fans, they are a great young team and they are truly one of the best this year. Moreover, the Rays really need this because I think everyone in baseball can see the writing on the wall and the Rays' window may be rapidly closing. Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena, Eric Aybar among others are most likely gone. Longoria, Price, Davis et al will still be around but with the Rays' ownership announcing that payroll will be cut next year I think everyone can feel that the 2011 Rays will seem like a much different creature.I think Rays fans feel the same thing. A lot has been made of the atrocious attendance in St. Petersburg this series. With a chance to clench a playoff spot and the best young team in baseball the Rays drew only 12,466 fans out to Tropicana Field, tonight was did not differ that much only drawing a little more than 17...
The Orioles finally beat the Jays...
2010-09-14 19:52:00
...But the Ravens were on Monday Night Football to open the season and no one cares. Seriously, the Orioles recorded the fourth lowest all-time attendance with their game against the Jays last night in Baltimore. Fewer than 10,000 people turned out to see what was actually a very good game between the suddenly respectable Birds and the homer-happy Jays. The Orioles finally beat the Jays having gone 0-12 against them so far this year. Not only that, but last night's win means the Orioles are no longer the worst team in AL. The birds have jumped over the Seattle Mariners and are closing in on the Indians and Royals. The resurgent birds need only to win eight more games to eliminate the possibility of a 100-loss season, something that seemed like a foregone conclusion a couple of months ago. The Orioles did not get away unscathed. Brian Matusz left the game after throwing only nine pitches and recording only one out. A line drive of Yuniesky Betancourt struck Matusz square in the thro...
Orioles Finally Win Against Jays
2010-09-14 07:54:00
It's been a great month-and-half for the Baltimore Orioles. After taking two of three from the Tigers over the weekend and winning six out of their last nine games, the Orioles returned home to take on the Blue Jays at home.Despite being well out of the AL East race, the Jays have managed to stay over .500 and play for something -- pride.Having beat Baltimore in twelve straight games this season, one could consider that Toronto had their number. However, the Jays were facing the Orioles managed by Buck Showalter - not Trembley or Samuel. They finally beat the Jays last night, 4-3, off a walk-off single by Luke Scott that plated in Nick Markakis. Brian Matusz, who has looked like a different pitcher over the past month, started the game, but left after being hit on the arm in the first inning. The Baltimore bullpen which had blown the game on Sunday in Detroit did a bang-up job, thanks to Rick VandenHurk's 5 1/3 innings in relief and everyone else doing their part to keep the game c...

Buehrle, Sox fall to Orioles
2010-08-26 15:06:00
It's not that Mark Buehrle was bad last night, he wasn't. The Orioles were just a bit better. The O's played the timely hitting game well last night, and the White Sox didn't play the "hitting" game at all. Mark legitimately was on cruise control for the first 4 innings. He retired 8 in a row starting in the 2nd. Had a bit of trouble in the 2nd, but it quickly went away with an induced double play. The 5th inning though didn't go well, and it all turned on a leadoff walk to Pie. Mark's first walk of the game led off the 5th. In the end, he'd walk 4 in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings. 2 of...

Orioles Stymied by Rangers; Markakis and Showalter Tossed
2010-08-21 20:23:00
It was a very frustrating Friday for the Baltimore Orioles as they lost to the Texas Rangers, 2-0, in the second contest of a four game set. Nick Markakis got his first career ejection after arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire Jeff Nelson; meanwhile, Buck Showalter too vented at Nelson later and found himself tossed – only after a memorable tirade that had shades of Earl Weaver written all over it. Then, the fans got into Nelson for the final few innings of the game attempting to get under his skin, booing, mocking cheers and saying sarcastic things. Seriously, Nelson’s strike zone was fairly questionable on the night and that in turn hurt the Orioles, but then again, C.J. Wilson – who on the night started for the Rangers on the mound – was brilliant. Overall, Wilson stymied the offense for 8 2/3 innings, allowed only three hits and struck out twelve. Of course, Nelson helped Wilson on the night, and the Rangers’ catcher, Taylor Teagarde...
The Orioles keep rolling, but what looms ahead
2010-08-13 20:56:00
The Orioles keep rolling along with a nice, steady series win in Cleveland. The Birds did lay a bit of an egg in the series finale, just an uninspired effort and the umps certainly did not help the Orioles out either as many close calls did not seem to go their way. But looking beyond one very winnable stinker the Orioles continue their revival and travel to St. Petersburg, Florida to take on the Rays who are in the heat of a pennant race. The Orioles have already faced a first place team in the Chicago White Sox and they rose to that challenge very very well. The Orioles took three of four from that series and could have easily swept. Tampa however offers a different challenge; they have completely owned the Orioles this year winning seven of nine contests and most of them have not been close. But that was the old Orioles that was before the time of Showalter and this team is playing like a different team and people are noticing. The Orioles have been featured much more prominantly o...
The Orioles Recent Run; Stuffage
2010-08-13 11:57:00
The Orioles lost to the Indians, 4-1, last night; however, it’s been a very, very good run for the black and the orange during the past two weeks. If anyone ever thought the Orioles would have an 8-2 stretch during the season considering everything that happened before Buck Showalter came along, they should play the lottery.Despite the loss on Thursday, Kevin Millwood looked a lot better than he did in the past few starts this summer. Who knows if his improvement is based on Showalter’s influence, being re-energized, or just feeling better, but Millwood is finally pitching as most thought he would. The offense finally got tied down, but it looks like with a healthy Roberts, a streaking Pie, and a lineup that finally seems to have it’s bearings in order.During the Cleveland series, I was most impressed by Brad Bergesen’s effort on Wednesday. The kid threw a two-hitter, gave up one run and rewarded the Orioles’ faith in him. Much like Millwood, who knows if Beregesen’s run o...

Why is it ok to freak out about two losses to the Orioles, but not two blow
2010-08-09 08:40:00
Losing the Orioles is not good. It's very bad. It's not as bad as say, a pet dying, but certainly comparable to spending three hours with family members you hate, or for me, watching 20 minutes of MTV just to vote for a friend of a friend of a friend to become a Twitter Jockey. Whatever in bloody hell that is. I'm 23 and I have nothing but contempt for the youth of the nation. Not a good sign. But while two losses to the Orioles are thoroughly unenjoyable; they are not a cause of massive amounts of concern; especially if they are telling us things they already know.
Sox come back, win against Orioles
2010-08-08 04:05:00
Gavin Floyd gave up 2 runs. I know...everyone panic! The world is clearly ending.Anyway, Gavin spotted the Orioles a whopping 2 runs. One of them was a homer by Adam Jones. Otherwise, 6 hits, 2 walks, 2 runs, over 7 innings. The Sox bats made the comeback happen. Carlos Quentin with a deep HR to CF for the first run. The Sox then tied it up in the 7th...Alexei took a walk (after Kotsay singled and was thrown out by a mile by Markakis trying to stretch it into 2...horrible, horrible decision, running on a guy with that arm, yeesh), and AJ hit a chopper that bounced just far enough over 1b to go down the line.Alexei came around to score....

Cubs Trade with Orioles!
2009-01-18 21:13:00
An era comes to an end.  The cubs have traded oft maligned Center Fielder Felix Pie to the perennial dumping grounds, Baltimore.  What we get in return is Garret Olson.  He doesn't miss bats well.  Hopefully this is just another piece in the Peavy puzzle.  I can easily see Hendry flipping Olson and the Indians prospects for this man:Oh yeah, we got some guy named  Henry Williamson as well.
Youre Kidding Me. The Orioles Want Richie Sexson?
2008-12-31 03:55:00
Been out all night, but I nearly fell out of the chair when I read this from the Sun's Peter Schmuck.Ok. This guy, I will admit has had a solid major league career; however, his best years might be behind him. He was horrible in 2008, and at this point -- he's simply a low salary, high reward guy who you hope has something left in the tank. From the Sun: The Orioles still are trying to figure out what they'll do at first base this coming season, and they've given some consideration to attempting a salvage operation with former 45-homer guy Richie Sexson. Club officials apparently have had at least one conversation with Sexson's agent, Casey Close, though the depth of their interest is uncertain.Sexson's offensive numbers have been in steep decline for the past couple of years, but he might be a worthwhile gamble if he's willing to take an incentive-laden contract. He turned 34 yesterday, so he would definitely be a temporary fix, but he has hit 30 or more homers six times in h...
The New Economic Reality May Hit The Orioles
2008-12-21 03:26:00
Just read this on Peter Schmuck's blog, and this really, really caught my eye.I have been a victim of the changing economic times -- albeit, in a minor fashion -- however, it looks like it may affect the Baltimore Orioles for next season.Well, we all don't have access to the company books, nor do we know if the team made or lost money in 2008; alas, it looks like there's going to be some financial tightening taking place at the Yard. The Baltimore Sun: If you doubt that baseball teams are going to feel the effects of the economic downturn, I'm hearing that the Orioles recently notified game-day employees that they are downsizing their stadium staff for the upcoming season and will need many of them only for the higher-attendance games.I know some staff who work there -- whether they are ushers, or people who work the various concession stands -- and some are retirees, some just love the ambiance of Camden Yards, and for others it is supplemental income on top of their everyday jo...
