Californication Continues: 9: The Manuscript
2007-10-10 07:26:00
I gave this review of Californication, Episode 9, a title, because that was its central theme: the manuscript. Or, more precisely, the manuscript for a new short novel - or, as Hank called it, a "novella" (I love that term - and that length manuscript - one of my most successful publications was a novella - "Loose Ends," a time travel story, that was published in Analog Magazine in the late 1990s.)*But back to Hank: he's written a novella while in New York. He had gone there for his father's funeral, after a great night of intimacy in all ways with Karen, and stayed on in New York to do some writing. Karen had inspired him.Back in L.A., Hank wants Karen to read it. He's always counted on her reading of his work. He also wants her to marry him.Charlie's thrilled about the new manuscript - money, money, money. Speaking of which, Hank gets a big unexpected royalty check for the movie made from his novel....Mia's thrilled about the manuscript, too, and wants to read it. (Han...

A psychologically rich and very satisfying Episode 8 of Californication on Showtime last night, occasioned by the death of Hank's father Al (well played by vet actor Mark Margolis). We get an excellent back story, in which we see not only Hank's relationship with his father, but the crumbling of his relationship with Karen (when they were still together), all occurring as the accursed "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" is being filmed. (Again, I gotta say that, as a science fiction author, I wish I had such aggravations.)The explanatory power of this back story - shot in a slightly different lighting - reminded me, of all things, of Lost, and its back stories. As in Lost, the back story in Californication last night moved the story forward in a critically important way. Hank and Karen are falling apart in the back story, and pulling closer together in the present. The last five minutes were especially satisfying. Karen finally sleeps with Hank. Perhaps it's partly a mercy act, ...

I guess no one - not even Hank Moody - can have sex every minute of the day, or during most of every episode, and so last night's episode of Californication - #7 - was pretty quiet in comparison to other episodes.Indeed, Weeds, on Showtime just prior to Californication, had a far hotter, funnier scene with Andy at a porno shoot. As I mentioned in my review last week, the supporting team of Charlie and his two women - secretary and wife - seem to be getting more sex time than Hank. The three actually tried a menage-a-trois last night, with unsurprisingly unexceptional results. Marci (the wife) did remark that Dani (the secretary) had a "great ass," and there's no denying that.Meanwhile, Hank and Karen do seem to be drawing a little closer, sexually and romantically - meaning, Karen is not resisting Hank quite as much as she was at the beginning of the season - and it will be interesting to see where this goes. Here's my lame prediction: the two will sleep together at the end of th...

Californication Continues: 6

Hey, a pretty satisfying episode (#6) of Californication on Showtime tonight. Maybe Hank finally got to be with Karen again...He definitely gave her a deep, satisfying kiss. And then ... he wound up in the pool, and woke up the next morning in bed, being kissed by Karen-But, Hank was only dreaming that Karen was kissing him. It was actually Mia who was kissing Hank awake in the morning. He pushes her off, and she cheerfully tells him she was only kissing him, not blowing-But the real question is: what happened between Karen and Hank between Hank in the pool and Hank waking up in bed the next morning (dreaming of Karen when Mia was kissing him), and how much of it does he remember?Karen certainly looked, at breakfast, as if something significant happened between them the night before. She's close to glowing. Possibly it was more emotional than physical, but she looked to me as if she was happy about something physical (but what do I know)...Hank, for his part, probably doesn'...
Californication

This is sort of off-topic here, but the new show, Californication, on Showtime is definitely worth a mention. David Duchovny was excellent in the X-Files (one of my all time favorite shows), but as Hank Moody, a troubled writer, he takes it to a whole new level. Duchovny’s dry wit and subtle acting rolls out the laughs faster than in any comedy I’ve seen since… oh, maybe the original “The Office”. The rest of the cast is also superb, featuring Natascha McElhone and Evan Handler. Give this one a try! Technorati Tags: Californication, David Duchovny, Television, TV

I'm laughing out loud - and notice, I spelled it out, because I don't want to be included in Hank's scathing criticism of LOL which is the formal title of tonight's Californication, Episode 5, on Showtime. It's not only neo-language that's the target of Hank's laugh-making ire. It's the whole Internet. Hank notes that its much vaunted democratization didn't do any good for Howard Dean (I'd say check back in another year, and see what impact it has on the Ron Paul campaign - it's already having a lot), and is a porn dealer's dream (that part is true). And Hank's denunciation of LOL even leads to his break-up with Meredith (Amy Price-Francis). She was the one to utter the phrase, in bed after a romp in the morning, and she takes umbrage about Hank going on about the deterioration of language on a radio interview, thinking that she's the target. It does turn out, in the end, that Meredith is leaving for another reason - her long-time love is finally leaving his wife, perh...
CALIFORNICATION gets renewed for a second season
2007-09-09 07:29:00
Showtime has renewed CALIFORNICATION for a second season. The first season of Californication premiered on August 13th and has seen its audience steadily grow, becoming one of the highest-rated series on Showtime. The first season will air through October on Mondays at 10:30pm. The premiere of season two of Californication is tentatively slated for Summer 2008. Unfortunately, ...
Showtime will fornicate with Californication for a second season!

Showtime has picked up Californication for a second season according to The Hollywood Reporter. Production is expected to star up in April with a Summer return! I say anything that keeps David Duchovny on TV is fine with me especially when it is a show I really like!!!

Barely any nudity on last night's show - Episode 4 of Californication, on Showtime - what?!...But, ok, the episode had me laughing as much as always - almost continuously - and I'm really getting to like Amy Price-Francis's Meredith. She looks great even half-asleep, just got up in the morning without make-up. And she of course looks great drunk, later on in the show, too.I don't know if this is what the show wants, but I think I like Meredith a little better than Karen - played by Natascha McElhone - who looked drop-dead gorgeous last night, too. Hank certainly loves Karen the most, but hey, that's just his opinion.Hank had an interestingly high moral profile last night. He punched out a jackass who called Karen the c-word. But, a little more surprisingly, he lectured his agent Charlie, who, you may recall, spanked his secretary Dani's (Rachel Miner's) bare ass last week. Hank acknowledges that he should be the last one to give advice. But he gives it, anyway, and thi...
Californication with David Duchovny
2007-08-28 22:34:00
Californication is the new Showtime original series airing on Mondays after Weeds! It tells the story of a best selling author Hank Moody (DAVID DUCHOVNY), actually just a one hit wonder that moves with his girlfriend from New York City to Los Angeles to turn is novel into a bad romantic comedy movie called "A Crazy Little Thing Called Love". From then on Hank gets a really bad case of writer's block and all his life falls apart, his now ex-girlfriend Karen (NATASCHA McELHONE) is about to get married and he has to worry about his young daughter Becca (MADELEINE MARTIN) that he loves more than anything else!!What's really good about this story is that it seems to bring a little bit of Sex and the City back, a journey of discovery and searching for love that involves a lot of sex, drinks and women... with an amazing performance by David Duchovny! Who doesn't remember David as Agent Mulder in The X-Files, loved that show! :)Don't forget to watch the show besides Ha...

Californication continues ... and continues to be so funny and laughing out-loud sexual that it's hard to write about it without posting an R rating, or whatever they might call it for blogs. No promises - and I think the rating system for movies is inane, anyway. The main plot line in tonight's Episode 3 on Showtime has Hank running into Meredith (played by Amy Price-Francis - just fine) - the redhead he was rude to in the first episode (she wanted to talk to him about Hell-A Magazine - I actually didn't think he was so rude). He apologizes tonight, they sleep together (of course), and Hank apparently really pretty much likes her - even though "drowning in a sea of pointless pussy" seems to be the theme of this episode, if not the entire series at this point. All of this was customarily enjoyable and funny. But the two scenes that really got me laughing tonight, for some reason, were:1. Mia, the beautiful 16-year old who doesn't look sixteen and punched Hank twice, comes by una...
Fall TV Shows Preview - Californication - David Duchovny

I gotta say, again, that not only are the women and sex terrific in Showtime's Californication, but the writing is right now flat-out the best on television. My favorite bit from last night: Hank (David Duchovny) accepts the assignment from the Hell-A blog, starts writing on his computer at home, it freezes or whatever - so he goes out and files his post from an Apple store.Everything is right and delightful about that: the name of the blog, the computer not working when you need it, and the Apple store to the rescue.Meanwhile, I think that Hank is a very appealing character. How can you not like a guy who daydreams in his car about making-out with his almost, now estranged, slightly, wife...And the other characters are good, too. My favorite is the precocious 16-year old Mia - played just right by Madeline Zima. She's the one who punched Hank twice in the face last week before she ... and she's the daughter of the guy who Hank's almost-wife says she is going to marry ...But you ...

CALIFORNICATION: Duchovny Returns to TV in Style
2007-08-13 15:49:00
There’s only two things you need to know about Showtime’s new series CALIFORNICATION. David Duchovny completely steps out of Fox Mulder’s shadow, and the show itself is straight from the HBO playbook (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Duchovny’s return to television has everything we’ve come to expect from a cable series. A dysfunctional family, gratuitous nudity, an endless supply of drugs and alcohol and what’s now become the obligatory casting of a SEX IN THE CITY alumni — in this case, Evan Handler who plays Duchovny’s literary agent. Yet after watching the series premiere, one can’t exactly fault Duchovny’s character Hank Moody for having somewhat of a personal meltdown. After-all, how else would you respond if you just just discovered that your ex-wife (Natascha McElhone) was getting remarried, your career options have whittled down to an offer to write a blog and your one hit novel God Hates Us All has be...

Californication Going On Tonight
2007-08-12 17:54:00
Californication debuts on Showtime tonight.I saw an advance copy of the first episode, and was laughing my ass off.Tom Kapinos' writing is brilliant. David Duchovny's Hank Moody and Natascha McElhone's Karen are called to school to hear a guidance counselor or whoever express concern about their daughter's behavior - they're unmarried parents. The guidance person starts out by saying how good the daughter is in many ways. Hank quips, I sense "a hairy but" coming. He's a writer whose book is made into a big movie he doesn't like (I only wish I had that problem). He's a font of funny quips - someone's voice sounds like "dialtone," he says (for some reason, I liked that line - I think I've spoken to that same person - used to be Director of a program I taught in years ago). And ... the sex is great, and hilarious. Hank gets woken up in the morning with oral sex, later gets punched twice in the face while having sex with a hot chick he picked up in the bookstore reading his boo...

Absinthe Featured In Showtime?s New Show Californication
2007-08-03 15:51:00
David Duchovny (of X-Files fame) has a new show that will air of Showtime called Californication. He plays a writer that turns his life upside down and searches for excitement. Apparently, on a recently taped episode absinthe was featured. We?ll have to wait for the show to air to discover the context in which absinthe is presented. It?s nice to see absinthe slowly creep in the mainstream and hopefully more people can grow to love and appreciate this unique drink.
WEEDS & CALIFORNICATION Premiere Party Pics
2007-08-03 00:11:00
The good news — last week the TV Addict received his first ever opening night party invitation. The bad — I simply couldn’t extend my LA/San Diego/Comic Con trip any longer. Even if it was to spend an entire evening with Mary-Louise Parker, David Duchovny and some of Showtime’s biggest stars. Luckily my friends at Showtime were kind enough to send me a few photos to share with you. Rest assured I won’t miss next year’s party. Share This
First Look: CALIFORNICATION
2007-06-26 01:33:00
Okay, so David Duchovny doesn’t exactly look happy to be back on television. But as a former X-FILES addict, do we really care? Sophisticated and unique, CALIFORNICATION centers on novelist Hank Moody (Duchovny) who struggles to raise his 13-year-old daughter (Madeleine Martin), while still carrying a torch for his ex-girlfriend Karen (McElhone). His obsession with truth-telling and self-destructive behavior — drinks, drugs and relationships — are both destroying and enriching his career. While we have yet to see the pilot, of this we’re sure. Watching David Duchovny stare at a blank screen for an hour will be more entertaining [and far less confusing] than HBO’S train-wreck of a series JOHN FROM CINCINNATI. All together now — they cancelled DEADWOOD for this? CALIFORNICATION premieres this August on Showtime, stay tuned for details.
Fine Ferns & Fornicating Fillies
2007-06-13 13:52:00
The picture shows some fine ferns which were photographed by the English Courtesan's own fair hand. That wasn't just an excuse for alliteration, much as the English Courtesan is fond of fabulous phrasing, but the frou-frou fronds of the ferns are in fact relevant to today's post... In response to a comment from the delightful Ex-Courtesan Gillette on 'Angry Courtesans & Escorts - Part II', the English Courtesan mentioned another of her favourite poems, Fern Hill by Dylan Thomas. So today she thought she'd share it in all its glory with the readers, along with the above photograph of a Mystery Moor In Yorkshire.Fern Hill was written in 1945 and was published in 'Deaths and Entrances', Dylan Thomas' fourth collection of poetry, in 1946. It's a long poem but the English Courtesan hopes you'll read to the end as the last two stanzas are arguably some of the most glorious and memorable poetry that has come out of the British Isles.By way of a tenuous link to the topic in hand,...
Masticating may help with fornicating
2007-05-03 17:00:00
A new book on eating aims to lift your libido with a few helpful diet tips. Candidly called The Orgasmic Diet, the book is set to release on May 15 and claims to help women reach orgasm (either for the first time or everytime they have sex) by regulating what they insert into their orifices. Supposedly by altering your brain chemistry and body through foods, The Orgasmic Diet will give you a "mind-blowing orgasm". The tips include "a diet low in carbohydrates that avoids ?orgasm killers? like refined sugar and caffeine, high doses of fish oil supplements, internal exercises that go far beyond Kegels, and maintenance of serotonin and dopamine levels". While obviously a novelty novel, this one may be letting down the ladies, as it's common knowledge that 60% of women can't orgasm from intercourse alone. Though the book's facts are debatable, a dash of fish oil in hopes of getting frisky can't hurt.[via]tags technorati : diet fishoil orgasm

Study: Americans Fornicating
2006-12-20 22:54:00
A new study was released yesterday by the Guttmacher Institute in New York that found 9 out of 10 Americans have had premarital sex. The study, which was conducted by interviewing around 40,000 people over a period of more than 20 years, concludes that by age 44, 99% of respondents had had sex, and 95% had done so before marriage. "This is reality-check research," said the study's author, Lawrence Finer. "Premarital sex is normal behavior for the vast majority of Americans, and has been for decades. The data clearly show(s) that the majority of older teens and adults have already had sex before marriage, which calls into question the federal government's funding of abstinence-only-until-marriage- programs for 12- to 29-year-olds. It would be more effective to provide young people with the skills and information they need to be safe once they become sexually active... which nearly everyone eventually will." Amen. Wade Horn, assistant secretary for children and families at the ...
