Activists make last-ditch effort to save orphans from Israeli state terror
2008-04-26 10:42:00
From The Palestinian Information Center : Palestinian leaders and Christian peace activists as well as representatives of human rights organizations operating in the occupied Palestinian territories on Thursday made an impassioned appeal to "all men and women of conscience all over the world" to help stop Israeli army plans to close down and take over several orphanages and boarding schools sheltering thousands of orphans and impoverished students. Many of the orphans' parents had been killed by the Israeli army and paramilitary Jewish terrorists, also known as "settlers." The appeal was made during a press conference at the main Girl Orphanage in downtown Hebron. The Israeli army has repeatedly raided the orphanages, boarding schools and affiliated institutions, vandalizing property, seizing food, cloths and shoes and confiscating several buses and cars. The Israeli army accuses the Islamic Charitable Society, the largest and oldest in occupied Palestine, of teaching...
Orphans of the Storm
2008-04-08 18:57:00
Last night my wife and I saw the 1922 classic silent film Orphans of the Storm, directed by D.W. Griffith with sisters Lillian and Dorothy Gish. The film, playing at the New York Film Forum, was accompanied by Steve Sterner on the piano, whom The New York Times refers to in a recent review as "gifted and scholarly." We happen to be friends with Steve, and having second row seats, we were about 10 feet away, so we chatted with him before the movie started. I commented on the NY Times quote, to which Steve, in his typically modest manner said, "'Gifted' I understood, but 'scholarly'?" It has been a while since I've seen a silent film with live accompanist, and it suddenly occurred to me when Steve started playing as the film began that here was another experience which created a certain intimacy which no longer existed. Recently, I...

apt-get, aptitude, autoremove and orphans
2008-03-13 16:58:00
Until some weeks ago I used to use only apt-get, and then I realized that aptitude is better in taking care of orphan packages. I am no expert here, but this is the way I think they both work, at least on Debian Etch, I have heard that in Lenny both works more or less the same, I use Lenny, and yes they can do the same thing but in different ways. Well when you install a package with apt-get, and that packages needs other packages due to dependencies, it will install all of them for you, which is great, but then when you want to remove the installed package, apt-get will let the automatically installed packages in your PC, while aptitude will rid them away. Aptitude marks all installed packages as "manual installed" and "automatically installed", the first are those you explicitly ask it to install and the latter are those which it decided to install by you, because they are needed, so when you ask aptitude to remove a package it will remove also the automatically installed ones, s...

Are Your Kids BlackBerry Orphans?
2008-01-07 00:33:00
Well, isn't this the question of the tech era? I had to ask myself this very question. I have been dubbed a 'CrackBerry Addict' and I admittedly spend a lot of time on my BlackBerry (and my laptop). There have been a good number of articles talking about this and it's a little fascinating and funny to me. Although, I don't make this question exclusive to just BlackBerry; it's any type of smartphone (Treo, BlackJack, Wing, SideKick, Moto Q, PocktetPC, etc - oops, I just geeked out for a second).I may not feel the need to check my BlackBerry every 5 minutes (it's more like every 20 minutes) and I may not check it while we're eating dinner (but I do carry it to the bathroom with me at work) and I may not email and drive at the same time (I do it while at a red light), I'm still a Blackberry addict, but fortunately I don't think I've orphaned my children. I do manage to put it down while having conversations with them and when I'm at one of their performances or games, I am ...
New policy: they can only have orphans for friends
2008-01-03 13:57:00
Other parents? Y'all are weird, sometimes. I'm intimidated as hell by the parents of a friend of Busy Girl's. They're very wealthy, and, nice enough on the surface, but, I feel like I'm being judged and am on the verge of doing something wrong all the time, I just have no idea what it is. They're older and have several other kids and their attitude is a weird combination of simultaneously seeming like they were done with parenting years ago, and, giving you the vibe that they won't hesitate to call the police on you if their kid isn't home on time or something is not to their liking. I feel sorry for this kid in a way, they don't really go out of their way to take her to things kids do, so, I have been trying to make sure that we offer her rides so she doesn't miss out. The other night, this kid laid into Busy Girl about a situation that Busy Girl really had no control over, and, didn't do anything wrong. Seriously, Busy Girl was clearly not at fault, but, this ...

In God's eyes we are all the same,He knows each one of us by name.He calls the orphans of this worldUnder His wings, far from the cold. When you feel lonely in the night,He'll come to you and hold you tight. When tears burn like acid rain,He'll come to you and soothe your pain. You are so precious in God's eyes,He paid for you such a high price. He send His son into the worldTo face the darkness and the cold.To share the mortals' destiny,To give you hope, to set you free. The little babe Jesus was born,For you, the orphans of this world.

They were taken buy experts to the New Forest Otter, Owl & Wildlife Park at Longdown in the New Forest, Hants, where they found their new mommie.via

2007-10-13 19:40:00
And Jesus does not approve. Courtesy of Blogonaut:An Illinois man who worked as a "Christian clown" named Klutzo was arrested yesterday on child pornography charges for allegedly taking naked photographs of young boys at a Philippines orphanage. According to a federal criminal complaint, Amon Paul Carlock took the illicit photos during a "clowning" trip to the House of Joy orphanage earlier this year.On his web site, Carlock (who has worked with his wife, a fellow clown) describes himself as a Christian clown who performs at parties, picnics, vacation Bible school, children's church.Carlock told investigators that he previously traveled to the House of Joy in 2004 and visited a Mexican orphanage in 2002. He also reported being an ordained minister who has been involved in pastoral ministry, Christian education and camping, and evangelism since 1967.In one Internet posting on a missionary outreach site, Carlock sought to volunteer at an overseas orphanage "doing any tasks that I am ...

All Those War Orphans?
2007-10-07 17:02:00
I have been puzzled as to why more Americans are not concerned about the killing that we are doing over there in Afghanistan and Iraq — and next may do in Iran? There are some wars that are necessary — a response to the Axis powers during WW2 was manifestly one of these. But Americans ...

The partner also reported that the heart of the pastor who delivered the food was "broken to see people suffering in this way, yet gave thanks to God for people who were giving their resources to be a blessing to people they don't...

Orphans with Scars
2007-06-04 16:01:00
Caring for orphans has been a time honored work of the voluntary sector, especially religious institutions. The Christian church itself runs scores of children’s’ homes and orphanages in the country. Orphans brought up in these institutions have been brought up to live , fruitful , productive lives. But a new strain of orphans is emerging that may challenge all the established paradigms and processes of orphan care. The ministry of health and family welfare says that 1,67,078 cases of AIDS have been reported from 1986 to March 31st this year. However this is considered to be an estimate on the lower side as probably only about 10 percent of the infected are aware of their status. Many of the children born to these HIV positive people are themselves infected and at some point many of them become orphans as one or more of their parents possibly are chronically sick or die. In what ways are India’s AIDS orphans challenging the traditional norms of orphan care ? Well ...

The War Orphans
2007-02-12 15:31:01
Americans have not directly felt the brutality of war — and particularly the miseries of its aftermath — since the slaughter of three quarters of a million in our Civil War which is still manifesting itself in our on-going racism and group contentions. However, the Europeans know better. The “lost generation” was the aftermath slogan ...

A Generation of Undereducated, Undernourished, Underparented Orphans
2006-12-04 20:08:00
Here's the truth people. The terrible truth of the unethical "fight against AIDS."The West largely ignored the humanitarian crisis as it was building up, only to focus on treatment - an expensive, inefficient, and politically biased attempt that neglects the prevention so critical to stop the epidemic from spiraling out of control.Public health principles and democratic logic is based on utilitarian reasoning, we should save lives that are cheap to save before saving lives that are more expensive. With the limited funds available, we must maximize the benefit and positive outcome. We must save as many as possible. Simple cost-benefit analysis."The advocates for treatment stress the universal human right for HIV - positive patients to have access to life-saving health care, no matter the cost. This is a great ideal, but a utopian one...There are also other ideals-first of all, prevention of the further spread of AIDS. And what about the universal human right for health care for oth...
