Oscar Wilde:No crime is vulgar, but all vulgarity is crime”.
2008-03-25 19:56:00 Kefauver spoke up. He pointed to one of the covers, from an issue of “Crime SuspenStories,” on display in the hearing room. KEFAUVER: Here is your May 22 issue. This seems to be a man with a bloody axe holding a woman’s head up which has been severed from her body. Do you think that is in good taste? GAINES: Yes, sir, I do, for the cover of a horror comic. A cover in bad taste, for example, might be defined as holding the head a little higher so that the neck could be seen dripping blood from it, and moving the body over a little further so that the neck of the body could be seen to be bloody. KEFAUVER: You have blood coming out of her mouth.GAINES: A little. As Gaines must have realized too late, it was absurd to defend comic-book art by a standard of good taste. Disrespect for good taste was one of the chief attractions comic books had for pre-adolescents. Grossness is a hot commodity in the ten-to-fourteen demographic. Gaines, Feldstein, and Kurtzman were jus...

Leaving on a jet plane.
2007-11-01 21:53:00 I'm actually writing this on a plane heading to JFK. Well, technically I'm writing it in my journal and I'll transfer it over into my blog once I get to New York. I was reading Flannery O'Connor earlier but I need a break from her. She's clearly an amazing writer but there's a limit to how many stories I can read in a row about lonely, alienated Southerners. Maybe her characters remind me too much of myself (well, except that I'm not from Georgia). It's weird writing a blog entry in my journal. My black pen (I always write in blank ink - and not from a biro! Ugh! It's got to be one of those "rolling ball" pens! - because I think it's romantic) looks lost and confused against the blank, white page. This doesn't really make sense, but somehow typing on a computer keyboard, and being connected to the internet, gives me the warm, comfortable feeling that I'm part of something bigger than myself. Writing in my journal, on the other hand, feels intimidating and dreary. I go thr...

Read Your Own Bedtime Story: Oscar Wilde
2007-10-02 12:16:00 English was secretly my favourite subject at school. I say secretly because as a teen it’s only considered proper to laugh at those stuffy poets in tights and ruffs or Brylcreem and cravats, puffing on long pipes in leather chairs. The fact is I, (and maybe secretly everyone) found them brilliantly riveting. I still do, but now I think I can safely admit to it. Shakespeare, Jane Austen and Oscar Wilde are my favourite comedians. I knew Oscar Wilde from a younger age, through his fairytales, opulently illustrated by Charles Robinson. Snuggoled under an eiderdown with my mother and brother with mugs of hot cocoa I would travel through other times and climes on the wings of his words. He was a welcome relief from the dark grimness of the Brothers Grimm, or the fascinating strangeness of Dr Seuss, and AA Milne must sometimes have been ragged and tired from over-use. I knew and loved Oscar Wilde’s words later at school through his plays, but I love them all the more now, the ...

2007-08-31 07:23:00 Anybody can write but not everybody can be a writer. The mark of a true writer is the ability to express him or herself with eloquence and grace. Writing, however, is more than just stringing words together in a dramatic fashion. What Makes A True Writer? A true writer has something to say. It could be a message or an opinion of great importance that could stir even the most passive of audiences. It doesnt matter how trivial or how crucial a subject is. A real writer ...

Oscar Wilde's 'The Importance of Being Earnest'
2007-07-29 15:25:00 Recently I was lucky enough to lay my hands upon Oscar Wilde's play 'The Importance of Being Earnest'. I had earlier read this play, I don't know how many years ago. But any way it was a real funny experience. All of us need to have such breaks while reading serious literature. This play was very famous in America also. The play 'The Importance of Being Earnest' is sheer comedy, at moments it is just hilarious. There is a touch of realism too. The conversation that takes place is so natural and spontaneous. It is so close to real life that it could have happened anywhere. The incident - when Gwendolen and Cecily decide to remain quiet when Jack and Algernon come but are first ones to break the silence with their questions put forward the moment the latter two enter - is not only comic but also shows the universal human nature of reacting overenthusiastically, of uncontrollable inquisitiveness. There is a use on irony also to create humour. The word 'earnest' as in the title '...

Ah!
