The CEN.TAKU.ME Manga Library
2008-02-02 05:58:00 Ever wanted to see what my manga collection was like? Well, here it is! I wanted to do this kind of post for a while, after watching a video created by Otaku Vlogger, Naruto is my Brother, on his impressive collection. Unfortunately, I do not have a decent video cam for my own video, so I settled with a few pictures–along with an Excel spreadsheet of my growing library. Here are a few Before and After pictures, taken with my camera phone, of the collection I had before I moved in 2006, and the collection I have right now in 2008: Before In Between Before and After… After Wow! What an accomplishment! All of that could fit inside one 62 qt. box. If I were to move again anytime soon, I would need at least three boxes, plus and another bookshelf! Pardon the mess…See the difference in the second picture? That was taken in March ‘07, right after I put everything in place after moving out of my old, smaller room. In the third photo, I have alot of manga th...

2008-01-10 04:04:00 This just in: ANN reports that ADV is ceasing publication of its English adaption of the Japanamation magazine, Newtype USA. Otaku Fest in Guam a Big Success
2007-11-06 18:00:00 The Otaku conquest of the world continues with our latest ally turning out to be a small island in the middle of the pacific ocean. Guam is an overseas territory of USA with a population of less that 180, 000 people. More than 120 of them came out to Guam’s first ever Otaku Fest and from the looks of it, they had fun. Some of the jubilant cosplayers showing off their costumes Winners of the costumer contest first place (middle), second place (left), third place (right) Read more at Pacific Daily News Who wants to join me in planning an Otaku Fest for Jamaica?
Lolifox - The best browser an Otaku could ask for.
2007-10-24 05:58:00 I was surfing about the blogosphere when I noticed a comment on a post about browsers mentioning a browser called Lolifox. I thought to myself; there is a browser that I don't even know about? How is this possible! So I looked it up on Google and discovered it was a variant of Firefox with modifications to make it anime themed! When you install it you get several useful bookmarks in your bookmark list like AnimeSuki, but what I thought was the greatest part of it was the default start page. The start page has a search box that can search not only the popular search engines such as Google and Yahoo, but it can even search several anime-centric bit torrent sites such as AnimeSuki and Tokyo Toshokan!

Otaku Nation: Anime's Effect on American
2007-10-24 05:32:00 The modern age of Anime arrive in Japan in the 1960s, and over the course of the next decade or so boomed into the giant robot, space battle genre bender that we would soon recognize as the anime of today.Evolving over the next 30 years or so, it reached a peak where it could begin to overtake and become an integral part of other cultures, much like the Hollywood of the 1930s quickly grew to encompass the rest of the world and inform their pop culture. In the same manner, American pop culture becomes increasingly informed by the trends and cult response to anime.Anime first appeared in the US market in the 60s with shows like Kimba the White Lion and Astroboy. However, the national consciousness as to where these shows came from as well as the poor marketing of the shows made them forgettable and rather than a jumping in point, they act as a nostalgic reminder. When Speed Racer arrived, the beginnings of a true consciousness that Japan was creating something new and exciting began to...

Otaku smashes ATM screen to “meet anime character inside”
2007-10-17 18:38:00 When I first read this I thought this was some sick joke are a misunderstanding but it turns out to be true. A young woman in China reported to be in her 20’s smashed open not one but two ATM screens. An anime character appearing on the ATM screen to help customers transact their business was seen by the Chinese woman and she having the wishful thinking that the anime character was inside the machine smashed it open because she wanted to see the character that was inside the ATM. After smashing the first one and failing she went on to smash another one thinking she’d have better luck! Everyone is wondering which anime character was “inside” the machine and so am I. Japanese Officials/Otaku Reprimanded for Editing Wikipedia at Work
2007-10-07 09:08:00 "The Agriculture Ministry is not in charge of Gundam," said Tsutomu Shimomura of Japan's Ministry Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in his statement to the press related to the six bureaucrats reprimanded for entries on Wikipedia the popular Web site encyclopedia from ministry computers. Contributions related to the World Trade Organization and free trade agreements were cool but it was the couple hundred entries related to Gundam and other anime and otaku topics than landed them in hot water. Thanks Grant for beaming me an email with this amusing news item but whats funny about this is if this kind of reprimanding was to happen here in Jamaica I'd probably be on top of the list of offenders. I work for a government Ministry as well here in Jamaica and with all the anime I have downloaded on my office computer I would surely be more than just "reprimanded" for filling 3/4 of the hardrive with "cartoons". Top 5 Series for "Hardcore" Otaku
2007-08-31 08:40:00 Holy cow! It's been about a week since I've made an entry that wasn't about WoW. I have made a list of top 5 anime that is "Otaku friendly". As in anime that is worthy of being defended by losers with nothing better to do than flame others on internet message boards for disliking it. Without further ado, here is the Top 5 Series for Hardcore (or shall I say, "Haddo-kore") Otaku. A word of warning: If you find this post offensive, then stop reading it and go find something to do other than beating up other fans. ;) 1. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya For those who have not watched the series, MoHS is about a very bossy girl, Haruhi, who "gathers" key members to her recently established "SOS Brigade" school club. The first episode starts off with a poorly made home video, who Haruhi directs for the club. The episode is funny, but it doesn't make sense. The second episode introduces the cast of MoHS, which should have been the first episode.... Haruhi Suzumiya is on the top of t...

Otaku – they come in all shapes and sizes
2007-08-28 22:07:00 There are lots of fans of Japan in the world, we geeks don’t have hide in our basements or hide or “otakuness” to remain cool anymore. In fact, lately we have been in demand now many consider us “cool”. Whether you are an Otaku or not you have to tip your hat, helmet or any other cranial protection device you might be wearing to this “lil fellow”. An Otaku expression caught on camera has never looked cooler, check out the flag he is wearing. I don’t know much about this picture other than it was taken in Brazil in 2005; I found it through my stumbleupon toolbar. All rights belong to the source, which can be found here.

No Otaku Knows The Trouble I've Seen - Part 2
2007-08-17 12:33:00 While another forum dweller was trying to chase me off of the forum, another one was chasing others away. There were series of unfortunate events going on on at the "nameless" forum. Like a member turned moderator abusing his power on the whole message board. This guy was far worse than our Camui fanatic. Note: Please read this entry if you find any of this "offensive". After showing my presence on the forum a couple of moths after joining, I noticed another member who had the same number of posts as Camuicon worshiper. He was no threat to me or the others. He seemed real informative, although he was a total fanboy. He was so popular, that in a few months, he was elected moderator! "Congratulations!" I thought. I take it back. After being promoted, he was very quiet and other members went about their discussions. Three months since his promotion, my time on the forum was running out. He started posting in every thread on the forum. Not only they were his witty, informative posts, t...

Proper explanation of the origins of the term "Otaku"
2007-06-26 21:57:00 I have already branded myself as one but learned so much more about the term from a short post on a new Japan related blog I recently discovered. A somewhat straight from the dictionary meaning of the word Otaku that I recently posted is explained as "a Japanese pejorative term used to refer to a variety of geek particularly one obsessed with computers, or anime and manga." What of the origins of the word, this post explains it quite nicely. ^_^ In the late 1970s and early 1980s, when anime and manga fans in Japan were meeting one another at domestic conventions, they began to recognize one another's faces, though they did not know each other by name. By way of greeting, they said, "ota-ku," roughly meaning "hey, you," though with the more formal, less casual intimations of the French second-person address, "vous." In American English, it might be more like, "Hello there, sir." In 1983, when Japan's economy was beginning its monumental rise, journalist Akio Nakamori wrote a seri...

Vocabulario otaku - I

Sony vs. Kotaku, and the winner is..........
2007-03-03 17:03:00 Wonder why Sony has been getting soo much bad press lately? why everyone is dissing the PS3 and calling out EVERY instance of their corporate stupidity??? From claiming that the rumble feature would not be missed in their PS3, to claiming that you can't find a PS3 in ANY store, Sony's PR people have stumbled and bumbled their way into 3rd place in the present console war. On Thursday,Brian Crecente from kotaku posted a story about a genuine bright spot for PS3 owners, after Phil Harrison himself teased it up the day before. You'd think that the attention he got from making that statement would fire up Sony fanboys, and whatever he was going to announce would be leaked, as so much is these days. Well, Sony came back and got all hissy with Kotaku, to the point that they threatened t blackball Kotaku and deny access to all Sony PR events at the upcoming GDC convention. "So, it is for this reason, that we will be canceling all further interviews for Kotaku staff at GDC and will be...

Otaku Dating Advice
2007-02-07 16:15:02 I just got an en masse e-mail from the Dedicated Otaku Anime President as soon as I woke up today. Appearantly, there are problems with a few of the male members of the club harassing other members. In addition, this may very well spread to the club’s annual anime festival, Otafest. While I know that logically, my actions were not the ones that spurred this e-mail, I can’t help but think maybe my desire to find the person I am destined to be with is overriding my motives and intentions. And then I thought that I am probably not the only person with this problem. There are many otaku males out there that cannot seem to get a date and I happen to be one of them. So I looked at my previous actions and applied common sense and what I have for you is this article. (more…)

Palabras Otakus !
