Loch March Golf Course: Inspiring Publinks in Ottawa
2010-07-15 16:30:00 Public golf courses that are both challenging and inspirational are a thorny issue. You want to invite your friends to play but, in the same vein, you hope word doesn't spread so that you are always assured a tee time! Such is the state of affairs at Loch March Golf & Country Club in Kanata, Ontario. Considered "impressive" by players who have made this their "slice of golf paradise" could become a double-edged sword as Loch March considers itself "exclusively public" with no memberships nor initiation fees, fully accessible to the masses. Carved from three-hundred acres of unspoiled forest, Loch March is ranked as one of the twelve best public golf courses in Ontario. The Course stretches to just under 7,000 yards with four sets of tees to choose from. A "risk/reward" test of skills for all abilities, Loch March allows you to play with different levels of golfer, from beginner to advanced, and impels you to use all of the clubs in your bag. Download the course onto SkyC...

jiangliqin wrote a new blog post: COAT article in the Ottawa Citizen
2009-07-23 13:35:00 jiangliqin wrote a new blog post: COAT article in the Ottawa Citizen The belief that Canada is a major force for global peace forms the basis of a powerful myth that is integral to our culture. This myth shapes the image that we have constructed of ourselves and moulds the way that others see us. Like all myths, it has very little basis in reality. The symbolic ...
CANALE RIDEAU - OTTAWA
Ripre...
Everybody Loves Ottawa
2009-02-26 15:51:00 I started a trend. It happens quite often but I didn?t expect this trend to occur north of the border. As part of last month?s hockey road trip, we visited Ottawa to see the Senators-Canadiens game and also toured the Parliament building. Nearly one month later, it appears that Ottawa is the place to be. Last week, Barack Obama made his first international trip as President to visit Canada?s capital and meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Here?s a picture if you don?t believe me:Now two international superstars (me and President Obama, of course) visiting Ottawa does not make a trend. That?s where the Ottawa Senators come in. I already shared the eight-second video of Carrie Underwood attending a Sens game to watch her boyfriend Mike Fisher. Then last Friday, Ottawa acquired Mike Comrie in a trade with the New York Islanders. You may know Mike Comrie as the boyfriend of one Hilary Duff.It seems to me that Ottawa is now THE place to be seen. Now we?ll just have to see ...

Canadian Road Trip
2009-01-09 15:39:00 Let?s say that you are taking a road trip to Canada with stops in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Where would you go in each of these cities? The reason for this post is because I am taking a road trip to Canada with stops in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. What a coincidence! I attended a wedding in Montreal almost 10 years ago, but don?t remember much about the city besides taking a river cruise and visiting the William Shatner Center at McGill University. I?ve never been to Ottawa, and figure that since I?m there, maybe I can be Prime Minister for the day. Toronto is one of my favorite places, and I plan on visiting the Hockey Hall of Fame on this trip since I?ve never been there before. I?m heading to these cities as part of my third annual hockey road trip and will be attending NHL games in each place. Besides the hockey games, I?m looking for suggestions of things to do. Therefore, please feel free to add any suggestions about things to do and see in the comments section be...

Message to Ottawa
2008-12-03 15:01:00 Dear People of Ottawa:I?m going to make a broad generalization that you all love hockey. Everyone in Canada loves hockey, so this should especially be true in the nation?s capital. Therefore, I have a deal for you. How would you like attend an Ottawa Senators game on Monday, December 8? Don?t answer yet as it gets better. How would you like to see the Senators play its arch rival the, um, Florida Panthers? Before you reply, I?m sure that I don?t need to tell you this, but I know you want to see Florida?s superstars such as Noah Welch, Rostislav Olesz, and Kamil Kreps live. But wait, there?s more! You can also have the experience of sitting in the Coca-Cola family zone where no alcohol is permitted. This opportunity to see Ottawa-Florida without beer may be worth thousands of dollars. However, for one day only, you can purchase two tickets in Section 314, Row N for only $30 including shipping. Plus, you can say that you bought Ottawa tickets directly from a blogger who liv...

Ottawa tightens mortgage rules. Maximum amortization period for loans backe
2008-07-10 23:47:00 Concerned about the "risk of a U.S.-style housing bubble developing in Canada," the federal government has tightened rules on government-backed mortgages including limiting the use of popular, but controversial forty-year amortizations. Longer-term rates of up to 35 years will still be allowed under new rules which are seen as a pre-emptive move to quell the kind of housing implosion in the United States not seen since the Great Depression."They are obviously quite concerned about what is happening in the United States, and the spillover into Canada," said Jim Murphy, CEO of the Canadian Association of Accredited Mortgage Professionals. "The government is looking at their risk tolerance and the impact on Canadians."Murphy said 37 per cent of all new Canadian mortgages taken from the one-year period ending in the fall of 2007 were longer than the standard 25-year amortization period. "Longer-term mortgages have been extremely popular with Canadians," he said. The new rules, which take...

Come? Nel lontano 1942 il primo Ambasciatore d’Italia in Canada, il conte Feccia di Cossato era talmente amico dell’allora presidente della FIAT, Valletta da farsi mandare una Topolino modello 42, che circola tuttora...

Activists and artists including Sarah Polley in Ottawa today to oppose Bill
2008-04-11 01:31:00 Activists and actors were in Ottawa today to protest the proposed Bill C-10, which would give the government powers to censor films (by killing their tax credits) it deemed "offensive." So far Harper's Conservatives have found the following things offensive and have summarily cut their funding: + Adult literature program for First Nations + Women shelters across the country + First Nations Declaration of Rights at the UN (not only opposed, but tried to influence other states into not signing this historical document that recognizes indigenous peoples' rights across the globe) + Medicinal marajuana + Assistance funding envelopes for museums + Pensions + Arts OK, for more on what the Tories find offensive you can read an earlier post from my blog. From the intervention in Ottawa today, the CBC reported yesterday: Canadian filmmaker Sarah Polley, actress Wendy Crewson and Brian Anthony, CEO of the Directors Guild of Canada, will be among those appearing before the Senate committee on...
Hello from Ottawa: The Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography
2008-04-07 18:30:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: My schedule in Ottawa this past weekend was extremely compressed, but there was one place I wasn't going to miss: the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography. As a person with no formal background, yet a keen interest in the visual arts and photography, I have been wanting to visit this museum for a long time. And my Internet research revealed that the Museum is featuring a very special exhibition right now: two photographic series by Sunil Gupta, an Indian-born Canadian citizen, exploring issues of identity, culture and the immigrant experience. Let me start first with the Museum itself, a rather unique venue in Ottawa with a long history. The Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography began its life all the way back in World War II as the Still Photography Museum of the National Film Board. Its activities include collecting, publishing and organizing traveling exhibitions and educational programs to foster the efforts and development of Can...

Ottawa Senators choke job would go down in history
2008-04-04 14:55:00 See, all it took was two and a half hours of slapping around the incompetent Toronto Maple Leafs to, perhaps, salvage a year.Ottawa isn't Nottawa after all. It shall remain a place that steals your money, can't support a football team and still looks to be home to a playoff-bound hockey squad.A much-needed win in Toronto last night called off the vultures, historians and possibly even a priest for the Ottawa Senators but life can't be all that comfortable these days. Not with that collar tightening. Now, far be it for me to call these past few months a choke job, but let's just say the Heimlich maneuver may be a required part of the rigorous two a days when training camp opens this coming fall.Surely this isn't something that will be embraced in Bytown, but if the Sens inexplicitly miss the playoffs, this one may go down as the biggest choke job - ever - in pro sports. Period.Hyperbole, you think? Well, ask Jean Van de Velde, Bill Buckner or Greg Norman if these littl...

$50.00 Snow Levy in Ottawa
2008-03-19 20:01:00 OK now the City of Ottawa wants to tax us more. Talk about pissing on the good folks of Ottawa.$50.00 is a bit much. All those poor property owners. And all those poort property owners who have had a crappy job done on their street. why why the last snow removal effort only half my street was done, and these guys get paid no matter what. And half the time their not removing the stuff. You don't know how often I've seen these contractors going up and down my street dooing nothing. AND WE STILL HAVE SNOW ON THE STREET A GOOD TWO FEET. Like I said they only did half.So is it fair to apply a snow levy to property owners! NO IT ISN'T! GIVE YOUR BALD HEAD A SHAKE! We are not the only people driving vehicles aroung this city. There's business! There's all those thousands of people who rent apartments and drive! drive! drive! OK So the owner of the building will try and find some way to pass it on. Crap that's a headache. And what about those people who own a hosue and still don't h...

Jack Layton and the NDP weigh in on Bill C-10

Now a word from the NDP's Jack Layton: Thank you for contacting me about Bill C-10 and the Harper government's plans to censor film in Canada that it finds "offensive". I agree that expanding the criteria used for denying tax credits to artists amounts to censorship and will have devastating consequences for the film and television industry. 2008-03-04 06:34:00 An open letter from educator and former Film Studies Association of Canada president Michael Zyrd, regarding Ottawa's proposed censorship bill: Dear Honourable Prime Minister Harper, and Honourable Minister Verner, I write with extreme concern about the proposed Bill C-10, and the ways that it would enable de facto government censorship of film and television. Proposed censorship bill threatens to pull crucial funding from "offensive"
2008-03-03 16:01:00 For our readers working in the industry this is probably by now old news, but for the rest of us, we may be surprised at just how much mileage Young People Fucking is getting as a catalyst for culture-clampdown. The Canadian feature that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival is repeatedly cited by right wing reactionaries such as Charles McVety and his group Canada Family Action Coalition as the arbiter of all that is unholy in the Canadian culturescape. McVety and his gang are disgusted that their taxes go into funding productions like YPF, a soft-core romantic comedy about, you guessed it, horses skydiving. Lucky for McVety and the Victorian moral police, they have a fearless leader who has responded with action. Stephen Harper and his gang of moralizing crusaders, the Conservative party, have a bill before the Canadian Senate called C-10 that would give Heritage Canada power to deny tax credits to film and TV works they decided were too offensive, essentially putt...

Gas at $1.11/liter in Ottawa
2008-02-21 14:08:00 I guess the good news is that Gas is back to being more expensive than bottled water (but still much less expensive than Coffee at Starbucks). I had to double take when I saw that my fill up price per liter yesterday was $1.11 per liter, so the $20 I put in my car wasn’t ...

Ottawa Senators trade puts Eastern teams on notice
2008-02-12 19:29:00 Call it the Ottawa Senators firing a distinct warning shot across the bow of any Eastern conference ship that plans on getting in their way this spring.Oh, and while we're at it, Hurricanes' GM Jim Rutherford may want to check his back pocket. Odds are Bryan Murray made out with his wallet as well.Cory Stillman and Mike Commodore for Joe Corvo and Patrick Eaves? OK, I'm waiting for the other player or picks going to Carolina.Someone. Now, to be fair to Rutherford, both Stillman and Commodore are unrestricted free agents at the end of the year, so maybe Rutherford felt he had better get something in return. And who knows, both may re-sign back in Carolina this summer. That, coupled with the fact that Corvo apparently had asked for a trade to an American team, makes the deal a little easier to comprehend. But if the Senators were...

2008-02-11 12:47:00 Has power gone to Stephen Harper's head - or perhaps "hairdo" might be the better term? Pictures in the papers lately make the PM appear kind of smug. At times he appears to be gloating. The nearest analogy might be the Cheshire cat.His look never changes. The squarehead hairdo is still his defining feature. You wonder if maybe his stylist has been trying for a sort of neo-Prussian look. With the addition of a little hard gel, I've no doubt the Harper 'helmet' could have deflected WW1 machine gun fire. The Toronto Star had an interesting article on Saturday of this week titled "The Cult of Harper" by Susan Delacourt. It's well worth the read. Ms Delacourt writes that Harper is known to be "scripted, aloof and unknowable". This sounds almost guru-like, and indeed Harper seems to be affecting strange airs that suggest he has acquired a wire about himself. Perhaps this is what gives the impression of self-inflation. I think "puffed up" is the colloquial term - or "full of it" as my...
