Melissa Buhl Takes The Win at Sea Otter 2008
2008-04-22 18:38:00 Melissa Buhl, the Valley's very own woman's pro downhiller has captured the top podium spot at this years Sea Otter Classic in Monterey California. "The KHS rider, who is studying undergraduate kinesiology and pre-med at Arizona State University, was excited about her first-ever Sea Otter downhill win. "I work hard for Sea Otter every year. It's been a goal of mine and last year, I finished third. I think having good fitness helped." Buhl said she bobbled just once early in her run, which cost her some time as she lost speed while in a high gear. "But I think that was probably a good thing as it motivated me for the rest of the run." You can read the full article as well as see complete results from this year's Sea Otter Classic over on cyclingnews.com read more &raqu-o;

Sea Otter Show Striking Variability In Diets And Feeding Strategies
2008-01-24 11:38:00 Ecologists have long observed that when food becomes scarce, animal populations exploit a wider range of food sources. So scientists studying southern sea otters at different sites in California's coastal waters were not surprised to find that the dietary diversity of the population is higher where food is limited. But this diversity was not reflected in the diets of individual sea otters, which instead showed dietary specialization in response to limited food.The new findings by researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, will be published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences the week of January 14. The study found that all sea otters in an area with abundant food resources share the same dietary preferences. Where food is limited, however, a diverse array of feeding strategies emerges, with individual sea otters specializing on particular types of prey.Tim Tinker, a UCSC research biologist and first author of the paper, said the study has bot...

OtterBox iPhone Case Looks Rugged, But Not Quite Waterproof
2007-07-20 06:50:00 OtterBox is known for their rugged cases, and this forthcoming iPhone case looks like it's going to continue their tradition. The Politics of Harry Potter
2007-07-20 01:31:00 Everything from attorneys to Virginia Tech has become politicized in recent times. Strangely enough, Harry Potter hasn?t. It remains one of the few things not tainted by politics in pop culture.Why is this?By the way, the reason this post is so short is because I?m trying to reread all the Harry Potter books before midnight tomorrow. I haven?t gotten very far :-(
No really, I am Harry Potter
2007-07-20 00:54:00 Tomorrow, at 9 AM Chamorro Standard Time I will pick up a brand new copy of the final Harry Potter book. I'll have it about 5 hours before everyone on the East Coast.Heck yeah!So.Prepare yourself for a story:I first picked up Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in April 2000, the day after my last day in college.During my last week of college, my father fell ill and was hospitalized in Saipan. His condition was so bad that he was med-evacuated to Hawaii. As I studied for my final exams I knew that there was a pretty good chance that I would have to fly to Hawaii to be by his side. In preparation for that, instead of getting ready for Beach Week, when all University of Richmond Seniors hang out for one last week between their final exams and graduation, I was packing to return to Florida immeadiatly following my last exam.I loaded my car ahead of time and left Richmond minutes after handing in my final exam (I don't remember which one it was). When I arrived in Florida 12 hou...

Midnight about to toll for 'Harry Potter
2007-07-19 23:34:00 The ending has come for Harry Potter.Will it be a happy one in which he vanquishes the evil Lord Voldemort (aka You-Know-Who) and finishes his years at Hogwarts in the embrace of his best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger? Or will it be tragic, a finale in which Harry -- the Boy Who Lived, to his fellow wizards -- dies in his prime (though not, presumably, without dispatching You-Know-Who)?Only author J.K. Rowling -- and, likely, a few publishing executives, book reviewers, printing plant employees and people who have flukishly received the book early -- know for sure.But regardless of Harry's fate, the famed seven-book series will conclude at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, when "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" is officially released.The "Harry Potter" series -- which has sold 325 million copies worldwide -- has been nothing booksellers have ever seen before, and as with the previous "Potter" titles, retailers are pulling out all the stops. There will be magic shows, costume co...

The New York Times Spoils Harry Potter - A Little, But Still Too Much
2007-07-19 22:27:00 The Evening Standard in London asked me to write a small piece with my reactions to The New York Times' publication of a review, this morning, of the 7th and final Harry Potter novel. That piece, which will be a shorter version of what follows, is being published in the Evening Standard even as we speak (actually, as I'm now writing).For anyone who hasn't been living on Alpha Centauri (since I'm a science fiction writer, I usually use that as an example, rather than "under a rock"), J. K. Rowling and the Potter publishers have been taking great pains to prevent leakage of any story details. Now, I usually do not get all that upset about spoilers - see my other pieces on spoilers listed below - especially when the spoilers are little more than what any reasonably creative person could predict.But this Harry Potter business in The New York Times is something else, and much worse, and I think ... well, here's what I wrote about an hour ago for the Evening Standard...We live in a s...

The Fuss over Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)
2007-07-19 18:15:00 Frankly I am very impressed by all the fuss over the release off Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which I have heard is the 7th edition of the Harry Potter series. I have never even read one of the books in the series but it is still, many say, the most selling series after the Bible. (But the Bible has had 2007 years to sell itself) So there must be something in those books I am guessing. I remember last year, I was traveling in a bus from Sion station to the Mumbai University and the girl sitting next to me was reading one of the books (think it was the 6th edition, order of the phoenix) in the series. When Kalina came around she looked up and asked me if Sion had passed and I said that's where I got on the bus and took this seat beside her. And she was completely stunned about it. She said something about loosing track of time reading the book swore loudly and got off at the next stop. Maybe what has stopped me is the fat size of the books in the series.I am guessing t...

As hard copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows leaked out to fans, The New York Times has published the first review of the most eagerly anticipated book of the year.
