Outfield Gluttony in San Diego

The San Diego Padres have some nice depth in the outfield, with at least one intriguing prospect at each level of the minor league system. Pierre unhappy with LA outfield situation
2008-03-30 16:27:00
Juan Pierre will meet with Manager Joe Torre before the Los Angeles Dodgers' exhibition finale against the Boston Red Sox Sunday to learn what he'll be doing on opening day: starting in left field in front of Andre Ethier or sitting on the bench according to the Los Angeles Times. "If they want to go a different route," Pierre said, "I can live with it and I have to understand it but it's something I don't get."Pierre signed a five-year, $44-million contract a year ago to be the Dodgers' starting center fielder, but was moved to left field before the start of spring training this year to make room for newly signed Andruw Jones. Today, Pierre could be moved again, this time to the bench

Cubs Outfield Situation: Crisp, Johnson, Byrd
2008-03-24 23:42:00
Quite a bit of info is floating about this evening regarding the Cubs' quest to add an outfielder.  Let's put it all together. SI.com's Jon Heyman names Coco Crisp, Jay Payton, Marlon Byrd, and Brandon Inge as possible targets.  Inge makes the least sense given his salary and the Tigers' need for him while Curtis Granderson is out. ESPN's Jayson Stark confirms Ken Rosenthal's assertion that the Cubs are leading the pack for Reed Johnson.  Stark speculates that such an acquisition could prompt the Cubs to trade Matt Murton.  ESPN's Peter Gammons says Red Sox scout Allard Baird is currently observing the Cubs.  Other scouts in 'zona are speculating about a Sean Gallagher for Crisp scenario.  Gammons notes that the Red Sox wouldn't mind getting Murton back, either.  He thinks the Sox are wary of trading Crisp right now though, echoing a sentiment from Buster Olney.  Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News writes that the Rangers want Mur...

Rays Likely To Fill Outfield Void Through Trade
2008-03-16 10:24:00
According to Marc Lancaster, the Rays would prefer to fill their need for a fourth outfielder via trade as opposed to signing a free agent such as Kenny Lofton. Lancaster notes the Rays are likely to offer one of their surplus of starting pitchers. The Rays have five pitchers competing for the final two spots in the rotation and two of those pitchers (Edwin Jackson and Jason Hammel) are out of options. In addition Lancaster mentions that the Rays have a number of pitching prospects at AA and AAA that could be included in a deal. The Rays would prefer a player that in addition to regular playing time in right field, can serve as a backup to center fielder BJ Upton. Lancaster lists several players that match this description including Juan Rivera, Reggie Willits, Coco Crisp, Reed Johnson and Ryan Freel. Ken Rosenthal previously said that Willits is untouchable, and Crisp and Johnson seem unlikely as trades rarely occur within a division. The Reds seem like the best fit of this group ...

Mets Looking For Outfield Help?
2008-03-04 14:32:00
A small note from SI.com's Jon Heyman: The Mets appear to be looking for a right-handed-hitting outfielder to platoon with Ryan Church. Presumably the need would be for a lefty-mashing, right-handed hitter.  Drunk Jays Fans would like a Reed Johnson rumor started.  Pretty good fit.  Kevin Millar, Jason Michaels, Matt Murton, and Jay Payton seem to make sense as well.

This is the last day for the 25% off. A quick search showed this glove selling around $80-$100. Demarini is pretty well known for their bats but I assume their quality runs over into their gloves as well. Obviously there are way better gloves out there but for a rec softball player this is a decent glove, especially for the price. Anderson informed he will share outfield, DH duties for Angels
2008-02-21 13:01:00
When Los Angeles Angels left fielder Garret Anderson arrived Tuesday, he termed as "hearsay" the notion he would take regular turns at designated hitter because Manager Mike Scioscia hadn't spoken to him directly about his plan to rotate Anderson, Vladimir Guerrero and Gary Matthews Jr. through the corner outfield and DH spots. It's no longer hearsay the Los Angeles Times reported. The two met Wednesday, the manager expressing to Anderson the importance of keeping all three fresh so they, along with center fielder Torii Hunter, can get 600 plate appearances apiece."I want to keep everyone in tune with the outfield," Scioscia said. "I don't foresee one guy being a flat-out DH the whole year. I think that limits your depth and versatility."

2008 MLB Rankings--Outfield

# Matt Holliday?COL ? After breaking out in 2006, many wondered if Holliday was for real, or just a one-year wonder. He left that discussion in the dust when he not only kept up his production, but improved. Holliday hit a robust .340 with 36 HRs and 137 RBI. He was well over 200 hits, well
Mets look for Outfield help.....Lofton ?
2008-02-02 16:31:00
After acquiring Johan Santana, I'm not sure if the Mets are done this off-season, but if they are who can blame them. The Mets pulled off the trade of the century and then signed Santana to the biggest contract ever recieved by a pitcher. If this is the team as it is now, I'm confident in their chances of winning and how can you not be happy with Omar and the Wilpons, both answered all their critics ( including me) in one brilliant move. If the Mets do add more players, it will be a departure from their normal protocal and show that they truely have changed their philosophy. In recent times this team has acquired 1-2 high profile players to get the fans in the stands and then not obtained the supporting/role players to compliment them. As I said, I already think this team is very good but if they decide to bring in anybody, IMO it shows that they really are going for the throat of the East and the entire National League. The team has room, after the completion of the Santana trade...

2008 Fantasy Baseball Outfield Rankings Part II
2007-12-31 13:20:00
Here is the second part of the OF rankings. (Here is Part I.) Some of the more highly-hyped players begin to show-up at rankings lower than their hype levels would dictate i.e Delmon Young and Hunter Pence. This is not a mistake but a function of the methods used to rank these players. Recall that these rankings incorporate three seasons worth of data on a 60/30/10 basis. With players like Young and Pence, they have just one season to contribute and that at just 60%. Should I adjust their rank or should I defend it by claiming it rewards track record versus one season flashes-in-the-plan a la Joe Charboneau? I did go back and check Emil Brown, who tops this list at #46. However, he ranks right there with across-the-board production. Unfortunately, the Royals non-tendered him. If he had remained with the Royals, I'd have kept him unremarked upon, but, without a starting job, he may have hit the end of the road. What teams have so little OF depth that Brown's PT would be unchallenge...
2008 Fantasy Baseball Outfield Rankings Part I
2007-12-27 22:55:00
This is the first part of the outfielder rankings for traditional mixed leagues. I have left-off any comments about who could be better or who could be worse than the rankings. Why? There are just so many quality players amongst these 45 that I'd be splitting hairs. For example, the difference between the #2 OFer's, Carlos Lee, and the #12 one's, Torii Hunter, score is less than 10. Even the 45th ranked OF, Mark Teahen, is fewer than 10 points worse than the 32nd ranked one, BJ Upton. Overall, each player is within one point of the player preceding and following him. To split hairs, the greatest differences are between #1 Matt Holliday and #2 Carlos Lee (7.8 points), #8 Lance Berkman and #9 Alex Rios (2.8) and #17 Jason Bay and #18 Aaron Rowand (2.8). To further expand, the greatest difference between one OF and one two spots lower remains at the top with Holliday 8 points better than Vladimir Guerrero followed by a 5.2 point difference between #17 Jason Bay and #19 Eric Byrnes. ...

The Impact of the Torii Hunter Deal; An Overstocked Outfield and Miguel Tej
2007-11-23 21:41:00
With the signing of Torii Hunter by the Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim, they finally have the protection that was sorely needed in the middle of the order for their slugger, Vladmir Guerrero. Now that Hunter is in center field, Los Angeles now has a loaded outfield with Gary Matthews, Guerrero, Garrett Anderson, outstanding youngster Reggie Willits, and Gary Matthews, Jr.However, what happens with all the players they have accumulated?I say one of them gets traded --- perhaps Willits. Alas, this is where the Orioles come in.As I mentioned a few day ago in a post, the Angels have targeted Miguel Tejada as part of potential solution to the left side of the infield for the past two seasons. With the trade of Orlando Cabrera earlier this week, it looks Los Angeles is setting itself up for a trade to get Marlins? slugger Miguel Cabrera, or perhaps get Tejada as a second option. That being said, if the Angels do go after Tejada, who do the Orioles go after? With players such as Brandon Wood, ...

Mench for the outfield
2007-11-11 20:15:00
Due to financial concerns the Brewers are considering letting Kevin Mench go. Mench platooned last year and at his salary for a mid-market team they just can't afford a part time player. The Mets don't have those type of problems as evident with Shawn Green making all-star money to ride the bench (mid-season). Mench only had 288 plate appearances, which is half of his usual amount and still hit .267 with 8 HRs and 20 doubles. The 28 y/o righty is a .271 lifetime batter with a .465 SLG percentage. In 2005 he hit 25 HRs, 33 doubles and drove in 73 runs. Whether the Mets trade Milledge or not he would be a nice piece and will only cost money after being non-tendered.Brewers outfielder Kevin Mench, who could be nontendered because of financial concerns. Mench got just 288 at-bats last season as a part-time player but is in line for a raise from $3.4 million through arbitration. source Kansas City Star
