CONNIE'S OVARIAN CANCER UPDATE
2008-05-24 18:39:00 I had another CA125 tumor count done about 3 days ago and called for the results yesterday It unfortunately has climbed and is up to 157 now (normal range is 0-40). I do have another fairly fast growing tumor forming in my pelvic area near the last one that was removed. My doctor is anxious to get me started on chemo again before it progress' much further causing me to possibly have bowel obstruction. My stomach muscles are still very sore from the last surgery, but improving daily. So, I think another surgery so close to the last one is out of the question unless it becomes an emergency. Listen to this… timing is everything… There just happens to be a research study program, in a limited number of locations affiliated with US Oncology Research, that has been opened and offered to onc/gyn physicians along with a small chosen group of their patients (200 total) with certain cancers to participate in . that happens to be me, my doctor and in ...

Ovarian Cancer - 7 Early Warning Signs
2008-04-06 19:28:00 Ovarian cancer is often called "The Silent Killer" because the symptoms are so nonspecific and are often blamed on something else. Thus it is possible to have been experiencing early warning signs of this disease for years and not realize anything is seriously wrong. This is very understandable, as the symptoms, if they are seen at all, most often seem benign at first. However, if you have had one or more of these symptoms for several weeks or months, please consider calling your physician and scheduling a check-up. Cancer is a scary word and most people would prefer to just assume everything is fine and hope whatever is bothering them simply "goes away." However, consider that ovarian cancer statistics show that 70% to 80% of diagnoses are made in late stages when the prognosis is not so good. To give yourself the best chance at long-term survival and even a complete cure, these are 7 of the symptoms to watch out for:1. Persistent indigestion.2. Bloating, feeling of fullness, tight...

Why Ovarian Cancer Chemotherapy is Important
2008-03-31 15:50:00 Like thousands of other women in America, you've gotten the devastating news that you have ovarian cancer, a disease that causes the ovaries to produce deadly tumors that attack various parts of the body. To make matters even worse, your cancer has progressed to a point that surgery will not take care of the problem. Your only real hope is chemotherapy. But then after reading up on chemotherapy as well as the overall survival rates associated with ovarian cancer, you wonder if it's worth going through. Well, this article will help you determine why ovarian cancer chemotherapy is important by explaining more of what is involved with the process. The first reason why ovarian cancer chemotherapy is important is because it is the only real chance you have at killing the tumors in your body. Chemotherapy works through powerful chemicals that retard the growth of ovarian cancer tumors. These chemicals are usually distributed intravenously, though sometimes oral drugs may be used. Either ...

Stages of Ovarian Cancer
2008-03-20 16:26:00 There are four stages of ovarian cancer. When you get diagnosed, your doctor will try to determine which of the stages you belong to. If you are diagnosed in the earlier stages then you have a greater chance of survival. On the other hand, diagnosis in the latter stages could mean that your disease has progressed too much to be cured by conventional means. Either way, you should be aware of these stages so you can know what to expect as your ovarian cancer progresses. Each of these stages are described in greater detail below.Stage 1 - Stage 1 is the first stage that a women will go through. Stage one is the most treatable stage and where you ideally want to find out you have ovarian cancer. The only issue is going to be detecting the cancer at such an early stage. Anyway, with Stage 1 ovarian cancer, a person has cancer inside one or both of the ovaries, though in Stage 1c it is possible they could have spread into a woman's abdominal fluid. Stage 1c ovarian cancer could also invo...

Blood test detects ovarian cancer early
2008-02-16 07:38:00 Reuters - Researchers have developed what they believe is the first blood test that accurately detects ovarian cancer at an early stage.“The ability to recognize almost 100% of new tumours will have a major impact on the high death rates of this cancer,” senior author Dr. Gil Mor, from Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, said in a statement. “We hope this test will become the standard of care for women having routine examinations.” In 2005, Mor’s team first described a panel of biomarkers that can detect stage I and II ovarian cancer. In the present trial, reported in the medical journal Clinical Cancer Research, the researchers expanded the panel from four proteins to six, and used a sophisticated assay system to measure protein levels in 362 healthy women and 156 patients newly diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Alone, none of the biomarkers could distinguish the cancer patients from the healthy comparison group, the researchers ...

Cranberries Fight Ovarian Cancer
2007-11-04 16:27:00 Compounds in cranberries may help improve the effectiveness of platinum drugs that are used in chemotherapy to fight ovarian cancer, researchers have found in a laboratory study. The scientists demonstrated in cell culture studies that human ovarian cancer cells resistant to platinum drugs became up to 6 times more sensitized to the drugs after exposure to the cranberry compounds in comparison to cells that were not exposed to the compounds, which were obtained from juice extracts.Although preliminary, the findings have the potential to save lives and reduce the harmful side effects associated with using high doses of platinum drugs for the treatment of ovarian cancer, the researchers say, adding that human studies are still needed. The new study adds to a growing number of potential health benefits linked to cranberries."For the first time, we have shown in our in vitro studies that cranberry extracts can sensitize resistant human ovarian cancer cell lines," say study co-presenters ...
