Canadian owners of older iPods eligible for $45 refund

Sympatico Tech News is reporting that Canadian 1st and 2nd generation iPod owners might be eligible for a $45 refund from Apple Canada.The company has offered the credit to people who bought a first-, second- or third-generation iPod before June 24, 2004, as a settlement to the two lawsuits, filed in Montreal and Toronto. The settlement said Apple had misrepresented the battery life of the devices. The plaintiffs, Ines Lenzi of Montreal and Bradley Waddell of Toronto, said the iPod's rechargeable batteries only supplied three hours of power rather than the eight hours advertised.The Quebec Superior Court in 2006 rejected Lenzi's request to certify the lawsuit as a class-action, but the Ontario Superior Court later accepted a similar request from Waddell. The settlement must be finalized in court in Montreal on May 26 and in Toronto on June 20. Apple has also offered to pay almost $100,000 legal fees and denies any wrongdoing.Up to 80,000 Canadians could be eligible for the refund,...

Even in a best case scenario where a buyer buys a property from a seller who used it as their primary residence, the Homestead Deduction credit would lapse for one year if the purchase was not complete by March 1. Another hurdle was the June 5th filing deadline where again if that deadline was missed, the deduction credit could lapse. In the worst case where no Homestead Credit existed due to the property being a rental or lapsed because the homeowner moved and purchased a new home thereby making it the new primary residence, the lapse could be up to two years. The problem arises when this lapse in the Homestead Deduction causes the property taxes for that property to increase; sometimes substantially. The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors recently approved a tax rate increase of 19 percent setting a tax rate of $1.14 per $100 in property value. Fairfax County announced today that the tax rate will only increase by 3 percent to 92 cents per $100 in property value. This means that Loudoun's tax rate is 20 percent higher than Fairfax's. Perhaps the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors raised the tax rate to help curb budget short-falls, something they perceive as important to Loudoun's short-term survival. But, by doing so, they may be eroding Loudoun's appeal to home owners, a serious long-term issue. Let's not forget that two of the big reasons Loudoun County grew so quickly were lower taxes and the ability to get more house for your money.
