D.C. United hosts Pachuca, needing two goal win
2008-04-09 22:59:00
D.C. United hosts Mexican club team Pachuca CF in a key semifinal round match of the CONCACAF Champions' Cup, needing to win by at least two goals in regulation to have any chance at advancing to the championship round. A two goal win would trigger extra time to decide which team advances to the finale. An improbable win by three or more goals would qualify D.C. United for the cup championship outright.Pachuca beat D.C. United, 2-0, last week back in Mexico to gain the early advantage in the home and home cumulative goals series. More ominously, Pachuca dominated the field of play with D.C. United having few opportunities to even get a good shot at their adversaries' goal. The only true hope for D.C. United may be the fact that Pachuca CF is coming into RFK Stadium off a short week and a long airplane ride, having played just three days ago back in Mexico. United comes in off a 4-1 home thrashing last Saturday of Toronto FC.First kick is 7:30 p.m. from RFK Stadium on Fox Soccer Cha...

D.C. United two down on Pachuca in Champions' Cup semis
2008-04-02 14:31:00
D.C. United held off the defending CONCACAF Champions' Cup titleholders in half one but the second half of play proved too problematic as United fell at Mexican club Pachuca CF, 2-0. The teams will rematch next Wedneday at RFK Stadium with DCU needing to win by at least two goals to force an overtime tiebreaker or three goals to advance outright to the finals.Pachuca dominated the field of play in both halves notes DC Sports Box though only giving up goals from Luis Montes in half two. Pachuca outshot D.C. United nine to one for the match. Luciano Emilio had the best first-half chance but was unable to create a legitimate shot.In retrospect, it might have been better for D.C. United coaches to focus their resources on Major League Soccer's more evenly matched opponents, the second of which (Toronto FC) will come into town Saturday night for the team's home league opener.----Relevant links: Washington Post, DC Sports Box, Goal.com

D.C. United at Mexico's Pachuca for CONCACAF Cup
2008-04-01 22:56:00
D.C. United faces its toughest challenge of the season for the start of the CONCACAF Champions Cup' semifinals, a match at Mexican club team Pachuca CF. United has traditionally not fared well in Mexico-based games so tonight's prospects seem bleak. Cup rounds are scored though on combined goals in home and away matches so DCU will get another shot against Pachuca at RFK Stadium, regardless of tonight's result.Three nights ago, the local MLS squad had a debacle of a start for the Major League Soccer season, falling 2-0 at the Kansas City Wizards. United did not deploy at full strength, due to the need to keep fitness levels up for this Pachuca match.Tonight's start time is 10 p.m. EDT on Fox Soccer Channel and back on WFED/1050 (FederalNewsRadio.com).----Rele-vant links: D.C. 2007-12-09 11:58:00
Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel stunned Mexican outfit Pachuca, beating their more fancied opponents 1-0 at the FIFA Club World Cup in Tokyo.Just under 35,000 fans turned out at the National Stadium to witness CONCACAF representatives Pachuca dominate possession on a blustery afternoon in Tokyo, but Pachuca ended up on the wrong side of the scoresheet against their African opponents.21-year-old Ghanian midfielder Moussa Narry scored the crucial goal in the 85th minute with a low drive that took a deflection off defender Leobardo Lopez and left Pachuca keeper Miguel Calero wrong-footed.It was no less than Etoile deserved, with the Tunisian team absorbing constant bouts of Pachuca pressure before hitting their opponents with a classic sucker punch.Etoile coach Bertrand Marchand praised his young side while admitting that Pachuca out-played his charges for long stretches of this match. Nevertheless Marchand admitted that his team was elated to have advanced to the semi-finals of the comp...
