Iron Ore Proves to be the Most Coveted Commodity in the Pacific
2008-05-14 17:00:00 There has been little said about BHP Billiton Ltd.?s (BHP) attempted takeover of Rio Tinto PLC (RTP) in recent months, but the proposal is far from dead. In fact, rumors that BHP may increase its bid have brought about even more speculation that China?s largest steelmakers will further enter the fray. Rio Tinto Group, the world?s third-largest mining company, rose in London trading yesterday (Tuesday) on speculation BHP Billiton Ltd. will increase its $179 billion hostile bid for the company. “The rumor doing the rounds is that BHP will increase its bid to 3.8 shares for each Rio share,” Manoj Ladwa,…SHARETHIS.addEntry-({ title: "Iron Ore Proves to be the Most Coveted Commodity in the Pacific", url: "http://jutiagroup.com/2008/05/-14/iron-ore-proves-to-be-the-mo-st-coveted-commodity-in-the-pac-ific/" });

Is O.C. builder Standard Pacific up for sale?
2008-05-13 03:01:00 Standard Pacific Chief Financial Officer Andrew Parnes said during this morning’s first-quarter earnings conference call that the beleaguered Irvine-based homebuilder is exploring several “alternative financial and strategic opportunities.” Among them: “… a merger, business combination or sale of the company.” Parnes and other top Standard Pacific execs immediately moved on to other financial matters without elaborating. Nor did the matter come up during the more than 30-minute question-and-answer period afterward. The company’s 10-Q filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission contained this comment on Page 47: “As a result of these uncertainties, and to help position the Company to weather the current market downturn and to be prepared to take advantage of market opportunities when the market strengthens, our Board of Directors has initiated a process to examine alternative financial and strategic opportunities available to us...

Standard Pacific loses $216 million, stock drops
2008-05-12 15:52:00 In the first three months of 2008, Irvine-based homebuilder Standard Pacific Corp. reported this morning before markets opened that it boosted its cash supply and paid down its debt in the face of a $216.4 million first-quarter loss. The average price of homes the company sold in Southern California fell 10% in a year to $629,000, according to the company press release. In the first 45 minutes of stock trading this morning, Standard Pacific shares fell 21% to $2.99, a low not seen since January. Why the squeamish investors? A quarterly net loss that was up 431% from the $41 million it posted in red ink for the first quarter a year ago. “Impairments,” or losses due to the declining value of land and homes the company owns, totaled $192.3 million before taxes. Homebuilding revenues were little better than half of the amount generated in the first quarter last year. Closed escrows fell 38% from the year-ago period to 1,036. New sales contracts fell 30% to 1,245 new home o...

Flight hassles with Cebu Pacific Air
2008-05-04 04:51:00 Davao City- It's good to visit again the city where you can feel the air flavored with aromatic durian scent--Davao. It is also the city which is quite strange to me because of its secrets and mysteries. Progress becomes possible only because the of city's secret eradication of the precious lives of many individuals--a mystery that until now haunts Davao of its inquisitorial past and present. I grew up in the neighboring town of New Bataan where I spent my grade school. And ever since I was a little boy, I was already hearing about the seeming peace of Davao that was made possible only by sheding the blood of troublemakers. My family frequently visited the city for family shopping and business transaction until the early nineties before we transferred to the Visayas region. I will say then that Davao is a great city--peaceful, clean, disciplined--and the food is great and cheaper compared with that of the prices from the restaurants of Manila.But before I reached this city as a wa...
