Packers admit they're not big on free agency?
2008-05-28 12:54:00
The story in the Green Bay Press-Gazette is about running back Ryan Grant's contract negotiations with the Packers, but the bigger story may be Green Bay admitting that they're not big spenders in the unrestricted free agency.Grant's agent Alan Herman spoke to the Press-Gazette regarding how the Packers like to do business in the NFL."The important issue is the club has indicated they're not big players in the free-agent market and they like to take care of their own," told the Press-Gazette. "Ryan had truly an extraordinary year and it wasn't like he was a flash in the pan. He played 12 games, that's a lot of games, at the highest level. Clearly, they know what they have and that's why the opportunity to get something done and keep him there for a long time is kind of apparent."General manager Ted Thompson showed his biggest willingness to be a spender in free agency before the 2006 season when he signed Ryan Pickett, Charles Woodson and Marquand Manuel all to lucrative cont...

Greenbay Packers let farve go and down. Disgusting.
2008-03-04 23:10:00
Brett Farve Retires from football. I knew it was coming but i really hate it now that its here. After last years season it i knew he was not going to retire after almost getting to the superbow. Why would the greenbay executive office want to break up a team so good? Brett's reasons were mental exhaustion strangely, not physical. I think brett thinks the Packer head office doesnt want him back, and bretts pissed with every right to be. Thompson my man, you are an idiot! My theory is that he wants to play footbal but just can't take anymore of the usual greenbay executive bull-crap. Farve just called the team and quit. Why wouldn't the franchise beg him to stay? I have reason to beleive that they want to go in a different direction. Ted Thompson wan't Brett Farve to retire for salary cap money. These guys are idiots. I think Brett Farve will play for someone else and as a die hard Packer fan, i don't want to see that. I think that the idiotic Thompson is jealous that farve got th...

Packers: Wolf regrets taking shot at Holmgren
2008-02-13 18:28:00
This was an interesting story....you can check it out below.....here It happened a long, long time ago, but obviously it still bothers Ron Wolf. Back in Super Bowl XXXII, played in January 1998, the Green Bay Packers were the defending champions and looking for two in a row. The NFC had won 13 straight Super Bowls, and the Packers were a double-digit favorite over the Denver Broncos to make it 14. But the blitzing Broncos defense rattled Brett Favre. The aging, but not washed-up John Elway, finally getting some help in the backfield with MVP Terrell Davis, kept it close for Denver. And finally, the Broncos scored with a minute left the game to take the lead -- a touchdown that was "conceded" by Packers coach Mike Holmgren. The Packers couldn't answer. Denver won, 31-24. The Broncos won the next Super Bowl, too. And the Packers haven't been back since. The loss still stung Wolf, a longtime Packers GM who engineered the franchise's renaissance in the 1990s. And never one to m...
Packers prepare for Pro Bowl
2008-02-07 12:59:00
The Pro Bowl is this Sunday and several members of the Green Bay Packers are at work trying to win one for the NFC.The Packer coaching staff was chosen to lead the squad after losing the NFC Championship game, and they're currently trying to get the players all on the same page.Offensive coordinator Joe Philbin is keeping sort of a mini-diary of the experience over at the Green Bay Packers official website.Of the experience, Philbin writes, "The fun part is you're getting guys from 15, 16 different teams. Football is not that complicated, but sometimes the language is, and you have to work through some of that stuff. What they think is a '6 route' we may call a 'hook route.' There's some of that you have to correlate between the systems. We're just working through some of that stuff, but overall they did a pretty good job for Day 1."Cornerback Al Harris is keeping a diary as well, and it sounds as if he'll be pretty well prepared for Sunday."Practice was pretty laid-back," ...
Packers show interest in quarterback
2008-02-06 01:59:00
It's confirmed that the Green Bay Packers have their eye on at least one quarterback prospect for this year's NFL draft.Southern Illinois quarterback Nick Hill says that the Packers were one of six teams he met with this past week at the Texas vs. The Nation Challenge in El Paso, Tex.Hill, himself, wrote in a column for Southern Illinois' student newspaper, The Daily Egyptian. According to Hill, "I had meetings with six NFL teams including the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Houston Texans, Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers. Each NFL team is allowed to bring in 25 players it is interested in and considering drafting and the Bears have informed me that I will be one of the 25, which is good news."Unfortunately, Hill didn't exactly have a stellar game this past weekend. He ended up completing only two of six passes for 14 yards, and he was sacked four times. The Packers won't have to spend a high draft pick to get Hill, should they decide to pursue him. ...

Packers special teams report card
2008-02-02 15:24:00
This is it. Here's the report card for the special teams and basically the wrap-up to the 2007 season. From here on out, it's all about moving ahead: free agency, the Combine, the draft, etc. Without further ado, here you are:Mason Crosby (A-): You couldn't expect more from a rookie. Crosby led the entire NFL in scoring. He was the NFL's special teams player of the month for November. He won the season opener in his first ever NFL regular season game on a field goal. He was perfect in all attempts during the playoffs. Those are some pretty darn good accolades. So where can he improve? Just on being a little more consistent. A field goal percentage over 80 percent next season would be a good starting point. Also, a little more depth to go with his nice loft on kickoffs would be nice.Jon Ryan (B-): Because of one horrendous game, Ryan is taking more heat than he deserves. What fans really should be focusing on is that Ryan had the best net punting average for a Packers punter sinc...
Packers need a corner, but which one?
2008-01-30 18:40:00
As a full-time school teacher in Wisconsin, occassionally we have days off. Today is one such day where a combination of last night's snow fall, blistering cold temperatures and high winds has forced the cancellation of school for the day.The day off has given me the opportunity to sift through some of the many mock drafts floating around the Internet and blogsphere. And the results are confusing to say the least. Most NFL pundits (and wannabe pundits as well) are in agreement that the Packers will be drafting a cornerback in this year's upcoming draft, but everyone has a different opinion on exactly who the Packers will be targeting.I looked at The Sporting News plus the top 50 mock drafts listed over at the Walter Football database, which is a good site for NFL draft news by the way. Among the 51 different mock draft, there was three way tie for the Packers first round draft pick.Kanas cornerback Aqib Talib, Arizona cornerback Antoine Cason (pictured) and Oklahoma cornerback/safe...

Packers look at long snapper
2008-01-30 13:57:00
For the second offseason in a row, the Green Bay Packers have some interest in long snapper Taylor Inglis (pictured) of the Edmonton Eskimo in the Canadian Football League."His agent has fielded calls from the Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins and Tennessee Titans," reports Vicki Hall for the Edmonton Journal.Railbird Central discovered the scoop on Inglis about a year ago, but the Packers since decided on re-signing Rob Davis after brining in Inglis for a workout.According to Inglis, the Packer coaches told him a year ago that there might be room for him this season. Well, the time has come and the team must once again decide what to do with Davis.Last we heard, head coach Mike McCarthy said he'd like to bring Davis back, and Davis said he'd be open to coming back. It's possible that the Packers could bring Inglis in to compete for a spot during training camp. Although Inglis may want to find a place in the NFL where there isn't as muc...

Writers put Giants-Packers game in perspective
2008-01-21 20:35:00
Doug Mills/The New York TimesIt's clear that new media rules in sports -- at least, if you checked out the news organizations covering the NFC Championship Game. Newspapers as varied as Oshkosh's The Northwestern, the New York Times and the Green Bay Press-Gazette all had audio slideshows, picture galleries and audio or podcasts. Fans could also weigh in on the numerous blogs dedicated to these teams at Newark Star-Ledger, Long Island Newsday, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and Wisconsin State Journal . Clearly, fans love this constant flow of information. As a New York Giants fans, I checked nearly a dozen websites last night after the game - and just as many this morning. Give me more news, information, quotes, analysis.I also love reading leads for game stories, which offer insights into communities the sportswriters serve. No fans embrace their team more than those living in Wisconsin. The Packers are as much a part of their community as city hall and the local schools. As a resul...
