New law addresses disaster preparedness and pandemics
2007-02-05 12:36:01 The Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act was signed into law in December after Congress passed the bill during its lame duck session. The law, which creates a clear line of authority from local to state to federal officials, strives to improve public healthcare and medical preparedness in emergencies. Building on the lessons from Hurricane Katrina and September 11, the law modernizes how public health departments detect, respond to and manage health threats by collecting instant electronic data that will enable officials to make informed decisions before, during and after an emergency. It established the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as the primary federal agency for coordinating the response to public health and medical emergencies. The secretary of HHS will evaluate how federal assets could aid in supporting surge capacity and will work with hospitals to develop pandemic flu plans. A meeting on this topic was held in Lyon, France, within the XIXth Jacques Cartier Symposia, a series of France-Quebec meetings held every year. New findings on HIV and AIDS, on HCV and chronic hepatitis, and an update on influenza virus and flu were covered during this meeting on December 4 and 5, 2006. Aspects of viral structure, virus-host interactions, antiviral defenses, drugs and vaccinations, and epidemiological aspects were discussed for HIV and HCV.
