The Bob Parable
2008-05-27 17:11:00
We?ve been visiting some out of town friends this week and, as you might guess, our table talk the other night eventually turned to politics. At one point, the recent comment made by Monica Lewinsky?s boyfriend?s wife about the RFK assassination became the focus of discussion. Despite my giving the remark a sphincter-factor ...
Parable of the Beach Ball
2008-05-09 00:43:00
When I was a boy, I practically lived in the pool during the summer. I loved to go to the pool and spend the entire afternoon swimming races against the other kids, diving for coins and playing endless games of Marco Polo. Some days, one of the kids would bring a beach ball along to ...
A Parable for Christian College Students
2008-05-05 11:39:00
Digging into the archives again. I wrote this over five years ago when I was at Wheaton College. It’s a parable… Once there was a great king who had three servants. The King had big plans for the servants and so he gifted them in different ways to accomplish their different task. To the ...

The Good Deed - A Short short Sufi Parable
2008-05-03 07:52:00
Kindness | Help | Love | Divine | Inspirational |A VILLAGE CHIEF saw a man take a thorn out of the foot of anorphan. That night he dreamed of the man, sauntering with pleasure inthe gardens of paradise and saying:`Look how many roses blossomed from that thorn!'Really a short story with great teaching. The essence of religious mind. To help others get out of pain is one of the most important aspect of religiousness or spiritual growth. I see this story as symbolic. A village chief symbolizes man with power, influence, affluence which most of us human beings strives for.Bestowed with such comfort of mind and body, he sees an orphan symbolic of a person in need and devoid of physical and mental comforts. With a thorn in foot, implying that the person is in pain. Taking out the thorn from the foot from the orphan, implying bringing relief to a unknown person in distress and pain, a mark of the highest form of Love. Many roses blooming from a thorn implies good deeds bloo...

Found Money and the Prisoner?s Dilemma
2008-04-16 13:25:00
Michael James talked about found money yesterday and the joy of paying off bills with found money, and how we should not squander this found wealth, and really use it to create happiness in the future by paying off debt now. I think this is a sensible approach to found money, but it made ...
A Parable About Poor Management
2008-04-15 07:16:00
Thanks to David for sending us this…it’s a great story about poor management at your typical American automaker. A Japanese company (Toyota) and an American company (Ford/GM/Chrysler, take your pick) decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri River. Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race. On the ...
The Parable of the Four Soils Revisited
2008-03-28 14:18:00
I’ve been mulling over the Parables of the Four Soils for nearly three years now. When I left my church in Fortine, MT to come to Dallas, TX for seminary, I was preaching through Luke, and had stopped at Luke 8:3. I did preach a sermon on Luke 8:9-10, but I never did preach on ...
A short Sufi Parable - A Heavy Tomb
2008-03-17 23:15:00
A Heavy Tomb I ONCE SAW THE SON of a rich man, sitting on the magnificenttomb of his father. He was quarreling with another boy, the son ofa dervish, and saying:Look at the splendor of my father's tomb.See the marble pavement, the turquoise bricks! And inside, the stone coffin is covered with anelegant epitaph.Compare all this to your father's grave - a couple ofbricks sprinkled with dust!'The dervish boy listened and said:By the time your father has been able to get out from under there, mine will long have been in Paradise.Kindly leave your comments on these Sufi Parables
The Parable of the Talents Revisited
2008-03-14 19:51:00
In the past, I have preached, written, and taught that the Parable of the Talents was about using what God has given us so that we can multiply it for Him and therefore, get eternal reward from Him in heaven. I taught that we all need to be like the first servant, or at the ...

The Importance of Backup Plans
2008-03-11 12:20:00
Saturday I learned again the importance of backup plans and the folly of ?hoping for the best? and not ?planning for the worst?. A Eucharistic Parable
2008-03-10 19:10:00
Ben - who hosts one of the most theologically insightful blogs around - posted the following little parable entitled "Eucharistic tears". I think his instinct to post it without comment was right on - so here it is:At my local parish, young children are allowed to receive the bread atCommunion. But this morning our rector was away, and the visiting priestfollowed the usual Anglican procedure of giving the children a blessing insteadof bread. I didn’t really notice this until my family had returned to our pew –when we had sat down, my three-year-old daughter burst into tears and exclaimedloudly: “But where’s my body of Christ?”
Short Sufi Parable - Cure for a Sick Son
2008-03-10 19:07:00
Cure for a Sick SonWHAT ELSE CAN I DO? Said the rich man, turning away in despair from the bed on which his son lay sick. His friends sadly shook their heads. `The only thing left now, 'they said ,`is either to recite the Koran through from beginning to end, or make a sacrifice. Then God may have pity.' The rich man considered. `It will have to be the Koran, then,' he said, `for it is near at hand. My wealth is all in my folks which are some distance away; by the time a sacrifice could be arranged it would be too late.' A passing holy man commented: `The Koran is near to him, certainly, being on the tip his tongue. But his gold is nearer, being in his heart.'"Kindly put your comments on these Parables."
The Parable Of The Lost Blogger
2008-03-05 00:30:00
Once there was a stock broker named John who got fed up of his job, submitted his resignation letter and left the company he’s working with for good. John read a lot of testimonials from bloggers making tons of money online and he want to give it a try. Just yesterday, he got hold of the latest eBook from “JavaMan”, which reveals how easy Java made $30,000 in less than one month. John was mesmerized at the opportunity and he is eager to make the same amount of money. Driven by his desire to make money immediately, John purchased a 2 year hosting service with SiteGround and registered his own domain name… www.john-the-incredible.net. J-ohn also decided to compete with other bloggers blogging about making money online. He’s new to making money online and he knew little about it but John thinks he’s read it all from the eBook he bought from Java Man. John is also confident that if he goes head-to-head with John Chow, he’s goi...
A Sufi Persian Parable
2008-02-21 09:44:00
The Man Who Became a Slave ?Got You!? cried the merchant, pouncing in the triumph on a raged unkempt man in the market place. I?ll teach you to run away, slave! Put the chains on him, men. Now fellow, you?ll pay for all the time and trouble I?ve had recapturing you.? They dragged the unfortunate man off to Baghdad where the merchant was having himself a large house built. The slave was put to the hardest and the dirtiest labor. He struggled to dig foundations in clay. He dragged the stone heaved the wood. A year passed. Then, one morning, an abject starving wretch fell on his knee before the merchant. ?Forgive me master?, he begged. ?I am your slave. I ran away a year ago.? The merchant gasped in astonishment. ?But if you are my runaway slave? he said, ?who is the man who labored in your place all these months?, They rushed over to the building site, struck the chains the chains off the man and brought him before the merchant. ?A terrible mistake ha...

Carl Phillips: "Parable"
2008-02-13 16:05:00
There was a saint once,he had but to ring acrosswater a small bell, allmanner of fishrose, as answer, he wasthat holy, persuasive, both, or the fishperhaps merelyhungry, their bodiesa-shimmer withthat hope especially thathunger brings, whateverthe reason, the fishcoming unassigned, inschools cominginto the saint's hand and, instead of getting, becoming food.I have thought, since, ofyour body ? as I first cameto know it, how it stillcan be, with mine, sometimes. I think onthat immediate and last gestureof the fish leaving waterfor flesh, for guaranteethey will die, and I cannotrest on what to call it.Not generosity, ora blindness, trust, brutestupidity. Not the souldistracted from its naturalprayer, which is attention, for in the story they arepaying attention. Heaven and Hell: A Parable
2008-02-03 15:27:00
A rabbi was talking with God about Heaven and Hell."Come," said God. "Walk with me, and I will show you Hell."And together they walked into a room of cold, rough stone. In the center of the room, atop a low fire, sat a huge pot of quietly simmering stew. The stew smelled delicious, and made the rabbi's mouth water. A group of people sat in a circle around the pot, and each of them held a curiously long-handled spoon. The spoons were long enough to reach the pot; but the handles were so ungainly that every time someone dipped the bowl of their spoon into the pot and tried to maneuver the bowl to their mouth, the stew would spill. The rabbi could hear the grumblings of their bellies. They were cold, hungry, and miserable. "And now," God said, "I will show you Heaven."Together they walked into another room, almost identical to the first. A second pot of stew simmered in the center; another ring of people sat around it; each person was outfitted with one of the frustratingly long spoon...

Britney Spears y adnan son inseparables
2008-01-14 17:27:00

The Parables Of Christ Jesus: A Series
2008-01-07 18:44:00
I love the parables that our Lord Christ Jesus taught in the Bible. I love that the parables are such simple stories that teach so much about the kingdom of God. Why did our Lord Jesus Christ teach using parables? By teaching in parables, two prophecies were fulfilled — one is Isaiah 6:9-10, and the other in ...

Allegories & parables which point to spiritual deliverance
2007-12-18 20:20:00
An allegory is a story that has two levels of meaning: the obvious, literal one and an underlying symbolic, figurative meaning. Both levels are important, but those with wisdom are able to see what is presented and hear the message. Why did Jesus use them? In Matthew 13, the disciples asked this same question of Jesus in verse 10. He answered, “The knowledge of the secrets of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. This is why I speak in parables, ‘Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand’” (Mat. 13:11,13).The literal story of Abraham tells of the 'chosen race' oppressed and in slavery to an evil ruler in a foreign country (a land not their own).A man with a calling is chosen by God to order the wicked Pharoah to release the Israelites (Children of God). They follow Moses through the desert of Sin (Ex 17:1), on their way "up" to the promised Land (The Kingdom of Heaven). Unfortunately, half-way there, they start to rebel agains...

Spirit of Scriptural Jazz: A Parable
2007-12-09 01:27:00
Scriptural ImprovisationAs long as I managed to confuse half of you with my previous post, thought I may as well take the opportunity to dig myself in deeper while raising the question: what do you think about the idea of improvising scripture? Something that God and nature never intended? Or is this a valid way of trying to understand it? The prophetic-sounding overtones in the first and third paragraphs below, which I obviously wrote, involve no delusions on my part; just trying to maintain a New Testament style.Parable of the HarvestJesus did not come to bring complacency to worshippers and self-satisfaction to a corner of the earth, but came carrying a sword of spiritual discernment for anyone with eyes to see and ears to hear (cf. Matt 10:34). And he said:“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain...
Sri Ramakrishna Author of Great Parables
2007-12-07 11:51:00
The video is about Sri Ramakrishna Paramhamsha a greatSaint and a great narrator of Parables. Sri Ramakirhna used parables to give spiritual insights and understanding, much like Gautam Buddha and Jesus Christ did. As stated in the video, parables illustrates religious and spiritual teachings in a simple way. The parables can give a good impact on the mind and easy to remember. It could be hard to grasp that the great teacher, who transformed so many lives and minds, was uneducated. The parables he used came from his high spiritual state of mind rater than read and learned or gathered information. Most of His parables comes from Indian village life and Indian Spiritual understanding. The Westerners sometimes find it difficult visualizing these parables. Aldous Huxley, while writing a foreword to "Gospel Of Sri Ramakrishna", a great book having the qualities written about Sri SaiSatCharitra, wrote that the feelings and experience are entirely Indian. However, i would lik...

The parable of the fishes.
2007-11-21 14:21:00
THE PARABLE OF THE FISHES.  Once upon a time the fishes of a certain river took counsel together, and said, " They tell us that our life and being is from the water, but we have never seen water, and know not what it is." Then some among them wiser than the rest said: "We have heard that there dwelleth in the sea a very wise and learned fish who knoweth all things; let us journey to him, and ask him to shew us water, or explain unto us what it is." So several of their number set out upon their travels, and at last came to the sea wherein this sage fish resided. On hearing their request he answered them thus:  Oh ye who seek to solve the knot! Ye live in God, yet know him not. Ye sit upon the river's brink, Yet crave in vain a drop to drink. Ye dwell beside a countless store, Yet perish hungry at the door.  Then they thanked him, and said, " Forasmuch as thou hast shown us what water is not, we now know perfectly what it...

Is Open Learning comparable with the institutional education?
2007-11-14 14:46:00
The Rate of Literacy in my country is 61% and if we talk about the youth(15-24 years) its 71%. More than half of the 71% are just high school passed. The main reason is that their parents can not afford the Expense of teaching them to any further and ask them to indulge in the 9 to 5 work profile. It is neither the parents fault nor the child’s fault. Many of the working students take the help of open learning. But it is just to satisfy themselves as they can say that they have achieved the highest qualification. One off the reason for heading toward the Open Learning system is that, it is not much expensive, there is no issue of attending classes, that means they can continue their jobs. Education wise, the institutional education system is much better than the open learning system, but if we compare it as a whole, like, if there are 2 person. One continues to study, and achieves the higher education, after that he gets the higher level management, on the other hand. Second start...
Friday Fun: The Incomparable Wing!
2007-11-02 15:47:00
Incomparable is a good word for Wing. Indescribable works too. So does Indecipherable. I've been a fan of this woman since about 2003, but I lost track of her. It's good to know she's still around. Wing is a charming older Asian woman who took up singing as a hobby when she moved to New Zealand. She sings standards and pop songs, all with...ummm... great gusto, and entertains audiences in nursing homes and elsewhere. You have to admire this woman for doing what she does, despite the fact that she doesn't really do it all that well. But listening to her is still quite entertaining. She has a whole bunch of self-produced CDs for sale on her website and via iTunes. She may not be the greatest singer (by a long shot) but she doesn't have to be... she's Wing! Here she is, doin' it live!

Parable: Money and the McDonald’s Play Structure
2007-10-10 15:34:00
Yesterday on my vacation day, I took my son to McDonald’s, just so we both got out of the house for a little while. He enjoys snarfing back some “hot cakes” and such, and there is a fun play area, with a play structure in it. This play structure is a set of tubes, with more interesting turns than my upper intestine. I sat down and had my coffee and my son ran off and was playing with the kids that were there and generally having a good time. My son is a bit tentative when it comes to taking risks, but if he is with a more rambunctious group he will tend to go with the flow and join in.
