Should parents check their child's emails and text messages?
2012-01-27 14:27:00
I think that parents should check their child’s emails and text messages.  For those of you who think that this is too much work, parenting is hard work.  I know that we should all trust our kids, but even the best kids will test the boundaries.  Children need guidance from their parents until they become... The Healthy Parents Fellowship program is dedicated to battling child obesity in the neighborhood of Washington Heights. Led by founder and health activist, Catarina Rivera, the initiative is currently seeking funding to jump start its goals of health and entrepreneur training for parents, publicity for the project, materials and supplies, and space for its work. Washington Heights ranks second-highest in the city for childhood obesity. The Healthy Parents Fellowship really wants to change this statistic by developing community leaders that will in turn, activate community awareness. You can help fund their cause here. Only 16 days left for them to reach their goal of $2500 USD.

New Year's Eve pressure: Even parents feel it
2011-12-31 15:55:00
So you think the pressure to do something big and exciting on New Years Eve ends after you get married and have children – well it doesn’t.  You have a short reprieve right after you have kids, and they’re still too young to know exactly what the night is all about.  But then it all... Read more »
Honor and cherish your parents

By Deanna Burrell I’m looking forward to eating, drinking, and celebrating Christmas at my parent’s house tomorrow. I have amazing parents. They are loving, supportive, and gracious. My parents had my sister and I when they were in their early 20s. When I think about how carefree, unfocused, and self-centered I was in my 20s... Read more »
Beyonce?s Parents, Mathew & Tina Knowles, Finally Divorced
2011-12-19 17:12:00
Mathew Knowles and Tina Knowles are officially divorced. Beyonce?s parents had been dragging it out for too long, but they have finally decided it was time to get it over with and move on with their lives. Tina originally filed for divorce back in November of 2009 after Alexsandra Wright filed a paternity suit against ...

Weaning from the bottle or binky, sleep training and potty training; pffffth….simple! BOX PLAY STICKER TOYS
2011-12-02 15:04:00
Box Play is an Arizona-based toy company that uses eco-friendly imagination for inspiration. Rather than creating waste producing actual toys, they help children (and parents) recycle and re-purpose everyday items like milk boxes, egg cartons and paper towel rolls into trucks, pianos and rocket ships! How, you ask? Via custom-designed stickers. Brilliant!

Sandusky scandal reminds parents to pay attention
2011-11-15 18:01:00
Youth sports have really taken a beating the last few days in light of the sexual abuse accusations occurring at Penn State.  The more details that are released, the more nauseating it all becomes, but as parents, we can’t stick our heads in the sand and just hope nothing happens to our own children. Parents With Children Struggling With Addiction
2011-10-21 14:00:00

Parents: Don’t Yell “Retard!” from the Stands
2011-10-20 17:48:00
I’ve picked up a nice little side gig writing about area high school football for a major sports news conglomerate. Football isn’t my first choice in sports, but the chance to watch and report the game is as rewarding as living in the moment as a writer with something to write about. Then there’s the... Do nerd parents have nerd babies? Great
2011-10-15 17:27:00
I was inspired by the Cheaper than Therapy article the other day about parents being the root of a child’s popularity. It makes sense. If the parents are encouraging party-throwing and text-message-plan-having then they are contributing to their child’s social finesse. But there’s got to be something to natural likeability. And is the inverse true... Read more »

Parents' back-to-school list

Dear Edye, I live with my son and his wife. They aren’t the most organized parents in the world. Mayor Emanuel and Chicago Schools CEO Jean Claude Brizard are performing the annual Chicago late summer ritual: reminding parents about the first day of classes. Top 5 Super Powers for Working Parents
2011-06-13 23:29:00
Working parents are called upon to tackle super-human feats all the time. How do we do it?  Super Powers. Here are my top five:#5. Backwards vision (a.k.a. eyes in the back of your head) All parents have it, but do they use it? Clue - if there is a child in the house and you have your back to them, but can't hear them, they're up to no good. Count on it. Tip - You don't need to name the offense. A simple "stop right there" ought to spook them into submission. #4. Time-shrinkingWith simple preparation, you can reduce the time it takes to complete a task by as much as 50% compared to that of your teenager. Case in point: If you were to get up at the same...

Suburban District Sues Parents For Tuition
2011-06-08 17:45:00
The latest illustration of the inequities and general ridiculousness of our system of local school districts and property taxes comes from Oak Park River Forest, just west of Chicago.  District officials are suing a family for living out of district and sending their kids to OPRF high school a couple of years ago, according to the Sun Times (District claims family lives out of town, sues for $30K in tuition).  Hey, at least they haven't put the parents in jail, as was done with another case earlier this year in Ohio.  Times like these I want Rev. Meeks back, so he can bring busloads of parents and register them.  Only brilliant theater like that can break through the fog.  ...
Calling all Grandparents...and parents
2011-06-07 22:58:00
Help me!  My grandson is due in 3 weeks, and I have been doing the gadfly clean up of my upstairs to make sure this home is a baby attractant.  I pulled all my relics of motherhood from the attic, and discovered that they had not aged well.  My plans to have my drop sided crib fortified withered when I saw that the paint had blistered.  Storing video consoles on the changing table proved to be more than the fiberboard could handle.  My saddest discovery was that the pine ceiling in the attic had "wept" sap from the knotholes upon my Peg Perego buggy and stroller.  The stroller is history, but I am clinging to the buggy.  It is where...

Are Parents Responsible for Their Kids' Lack of Coping Skills?
2011-04-26 05:44:00
Who knows why kids do what they do. I firmly believe we as parents need to stop making life so damn easy for them; it will only make it more difficult for them later. The realization that things don't always go their way shouldn't wait until they are teenagers. If we fail to point this fact out earlier in life, we leave them at a tremendous disadvantage later.
Chicago School Accuses Parents of Poisoning Children
2011-04-13 16:59:00
-By Warner Todd Huston The nanny state in the people's republic of Chicago rears its ugly head once again where a school principal has accused parents of trying to poison their own children with "unhealthy" bag lunches. And so, in her infinite wisdom, Principal Elsa Carmona had banned all lunches brought from home. I guess it's just a coincidence that the school gets more federal money for lunches served by the school, eh? Little Village Academy Principal Carmona, you see, is better and smarter than the vile parents of the children for whom she is the keeper... at least she thinks she is, anyway. She has determined that kids are not getting healthy lunches from parents, so she's decided that...
Parents: What's Your Most Embarrassing Moment?
2011-04-06 17:07:00
Parenthood.  No other job on this planet holds such rich potential for hide-under-a-rock embarrassing moments. Between the lack of sleep, overwhelming amount of activity day-in and day-out and the major shift in priorities, the opportunities are endless. I think I speak for mothers everywhere when I say that it all starts in the delivery room.  In the throes of labor with my firstborn, feet high up in the stirrups, while doing my best to cut off the circulation in my husband's hands, I'll never forget watching in horror as a parade of interns walked into the room to observe my son's entrance into the world.   OK, so maybe that's a little beyond embarrassing and fathers don't have much to...
Move over Rebecca Black, hate on Jenna Rose. Or her parents.

She warmed my heart because she is so sweet and wholesome, but I have a 12-year-old I'm ready to throw to the dogs. Ready for it? This kid is TWELVE.  Her name is Jenna Rose and she scandalous! Wow, I feel like such an old lady saying ths, but I have two daughters and if they thought they were going to dress up like pedophile targets and dare people on the internet to take pictures of them, I'd . . . I haven't even invented what I'd do. Let's just say they would be mistaken. Ha, and my mom was mad at me for wearing...

Parents on the Run
2011-03-08 21:38:00
My husband and I don't have a "normal" marriage. He cooks chef-inspired dinners nearly every single night. He does the grocery shopping. He cleans up after dinner some nights. He is the superman of husbands. While I clean the house too and I'm known around the world for my buffalo chicken dip, he still does most of the hardcore housekeeping. In fact, it was no surprise that this time last year I was at my bridal showers receiving a ton of cook books and kitchen utensils. I got the hint, but my loving husband has a passion for cooking - so I gladly sit back and enjoy his delicious meals. Justin was working late last night, which meant I was...
Texas Abortion Centers Killing Teen's Babies Without Informing Parents
2011-03-04 01:00:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Texas has a parental notification law for abortions. Underage teens are not supposed to be allowed to have the procedure until her parents are made aware of the crisis. Unfortunately, it has been discovered that many abortion mills in Texas are breaking the law and killing the babies of under aged girls without informing parents. But there are more violations than just that. A three-month-long investigation by a pro-life group has also found that medical records are routinely and illegally destroyed and hazardous medical waste is commonly disposed of illegally....

Three types of parents: Which one are you?
2011-02-25 14:30:00
While sitting through a 10 hour swim meet, a friend and I talked about a recent lecture she experienced regarding the three types of involved parents.  It caused me to look at myself, and try to force myself into the one that sounded the most attractive. The Parent that lives THROUGH their child:  These parents are pretty easy to pick out.  They talk extensively about their own successes and failures.  You tend to know all about their high school football team.  Their child is usually the one that never looks all that happy on the field, or playing the instrument.  The other thing you hear out of those parent's mouths quite a bit is "WE"At the end of a pretty heated soccer...
Teens Do Not Come With Instructions: Lucky For Their Parents, The Brats Kno
2011-02-20 04:08:00
I rarely spent a weekend sleeping at home during high school. There were two usual points of destination. One of my friends' basements resembled a liquor store/winery. A bottle or two was never missed from the inventory of hundreds. The other hostess of "overnights" was blessed with a mother who worked third-shift, a father who passed out after arriving home from second-shift, and an aunt with one leg who would have slept through an explosion.

Parents!...Watch Your Kids
2011-01-14 05:17:00
People...where have the manners gone? When did it stop being common to teach our children how to behave in the real world? Maybe that's why the Jersey Shore is popular? A show about fools who obviously come from money and a lot of pamperping. Seriously, this needs to stop! Teach them now so we don't have more douche bags in the future. Let's help to prevent our kids from rotting their minds to stupid tv.

New Year's Resolutions for Parents (Reposted)

Parents: Magnet Deadline Fast Approaching
2010-12-16 07:07:00
One of the things that initially bothered folks about Chicago's income-based magnet admissions setup was that the data were old. Here's a NYT representation of the changes in home values in recent years for a part of the city -- all the tan and brown sections are places where the median home value has gone up 10,20, or more since 2000. You can do the same with your own neighborhood by going here. Anyway, CPS says that it's using updated information rather than the 2000 census data but I'd like to know more about that.  Are the data current and reliable down to the census tract level?  Meantime, you can read a good overview of the current formula here (WBEZ).  Oh, yeah, the...
Gmail Mobile In Hindi And Teach Parents Tech – Google’s Holiday
2010-12-14 09:35:00
It’s the holiday season and Google wants to do its part about caring and sharing. The thing that Google has hit upon this time is a website, called TeachParentsTech.org that has video tutorials to help people do basic things that any youngster of this generation would do with ease. Often, the tech embracing elders in your house would have asked you doubts regarding the use of the computer and the internet. Sometimes you would be a bit bemused and think how they don’t know these simple things. Then you would realize that they were not really part of the computer using generation, unlike you. Google has come up with a website to aid you in providing first hand information about these things. All you need to do is point your browser to TeachParentsTech.org and you can select any number of videos on various topics that you can send to your dad, mom, uncles or neighbours. You can send a custom email with all the links to the videos you have selected from about 50 different t...

Could you date a guy who still lives with his parents?
