Head Of EU Parliment: "Islam Has Nothing To Do With Terrorism"
2008-04-14 04:02:00
How many times do we here this? All the while jihadist openly quote the Quran and invoke the example of Muhammad to justify terrorism.President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pottering, said that he was against the anti-Islam film Fitna, which was produced and released by a Dutch lawmaker.Talking to reporters in Doha on the sidelines of the eighth Forum on Democracy, Development and Free Trade, which started yesterday, he said that he understood the cultural differences between the Islamic world and Europe and that he was committed to dialogue based on partnership.?If there are people who commit acts of terrorism in the name of Islam, we do not believe they represented the mainstream of Muslim thinking? we [the EU] will not accept that Islam and terrorism are identical. We are not in favour of descriptions and pictures that identify violence with Islam. We are against any cartoons that could instigate violence,? he said.?We are committed to the freedom of the press but I ...
Iraq parliment changes Iraqi flag
2008-01-24 19:59:00
I can't tell the difference between Saddam's handwriting and Kufi script. Of interest to me: Saddam has been called a classic fascist (here and here) Jonah Goldberg has been saying that fascism is an offshoot of socialism. Well, Saddam had "socialism" written on the flag. Anyways, I don't know if this counts as political progress, but... BAGHDAD, 23 January 2008 — The Iraqi flag will no longer boast Saddam Hussein’s handwritten praise to God nor its distinctive three stars, the Parliament decided yesterday. The house passed a new flag law by 110 votes to 50 which will change the appearance of the standard but keep its horizontal red, white and black stripes. Instead of the executed dictator’s handwritten “Allaho Akbar” (God is Greatest), the phrase will be printed in green on the central white stripe in the Kufi form of Arabic script, Parliament ruled. The three green stars, which symbolised unity, freedom and socialism will also be dropped. Und...
Parliament Member Makes Anti-Islam Film... Dutch Parliment Worries
2007-11-28 16:23:00
Dutch member of parliament Geert Wilders is working on a provocative tv movie on the Koran. It is Mr Wilders' next step in his fight in what he sees as deadly islam. He recently pleaded for a ban on the Koran, which he calls fascist. Wilders compared the book to Hitler's Mein Kampf. The politician says his film shows similarities with Submission, a film made in 2004 by Theo van Gogh and Ayaan Hirsi Ali.ReactionThe Dutch cabinet is worried about Mr Wilders' plans. Both the Interior and the Justice Ministries have alerted Wilders to the risks he is taking with his film project. The Justice Ministry says it has taken measures in case there should be international uproar after the movie appears. The ministry emphasizes that Mr Wilders is free to express his opinion. It is not the first time that Mr Wilders is alerted to the dangers that his statements contain. The National Co-ordinator for the Prevention of Terrorism, Tjibbe Joustra, warned the MP in September that his utterances are ...
Not for the eyes of the Scottish executive or Parliment
2007-11-01 13:08:00
The trip to Edinburgh to pitch at the Connect Investment Conference, (www.investmentconference.co.uk-/CIC/CIC_home.asp) was just, worth the effort, the last time I was there was to pitch my own company a few years ago, Rosebank technologies, with Callum Norrie, we were looking for a few 100ks, and there was no takers, it was, a couple of million or more, and any less and the VC's were not interested, you were left to the tender mercy of the Angel sharks. This time it was the reverse, there were medium funds present, from a few 100ks to a million, and only a trio of larger VC's. This is not the place to be if you want to raise a lot of cash, it is the place to be if you want to meet SE folks, lawyers, and other service support technologies, the pitches were polished and gave the bones of the stories, but I did come away with some sadness, as there was not a lot of energy in the pitches, or excitement, has the Scottish entrepreneur lost it? I do wonder where the future of Industry li...
Iraqi Parliment to US - Leave!
2007-06-06 16:02:00
Exclusive: Iraqi Lawmakers Pass Resolution That May Force End to Occupation While most observers are focused on the U.S. Congress as it continues to issue new rubber stamps to legitimize Bush's permanent designs on Iraq, nationalists in the Iraqi parliament -- now representing a majority of the body -- continue to make progress toward bringing an end to their country's occupation. The parliament today passed a binding resolution that will guarantee lawmakers an opportunity to block the extension of the U.N. mandate under which coalition troops now remain in Iraq when it comes up for renewal in December. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, whose cabinet is dominated by Iraqi separatists, may veto the measure. The law requires the parliament's approval of any future extensions of the mandate, which have previously been made by Iraq's prime minister. It is an enormous development; lawmakers reached in Baghdad today said that they do in fact plan on blocking the extension of the coalition...
Foreign Office's Failure of Accountablility to Parliment
2007-05-31 15:53:00
Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett's reluctance to attend a session ahead of an EU summit, was "a failure of accountability to Parliament" according to the foreign affairs committee. The summit will consider attempts by Germany to revive the EU constitution, vetoed by the French and Dutch in referendums two years ago. "Deep concern" that MPs had not had a chance to question ministers was
