The TEDIndia Experience – Ideas That Should Spread – Part &ndas
2009-11-09 06:19:00
By the 3rd day of TEDIndia I was convinced in my mind and my heart that I hadn’t experienced so many thoughts, ideas and emotions in such a short span of time ever before as the first and second day were fantastic. When I was invited to TEDIndia I had thought that I would just cover the Technology side of stuff that came up during the event but I soon realized that TEDIndia was not about a vertical, not about businesses or cultures or India alone but it was about life and its experiences. It was about the passion, perseverance and spirit of human kind and what it could achieve going forward. The last day at TED was one which started of with C.K.Prahalad sharing his thoughts on business and innovation. He stated that success is the first enemy of innovation as companies feel that they must be right and dont delve deeper to innovate or create something new. He also stated that size by no measure is a signal of a great company. He felt smaller companies could create the same prod...

The TEDIndia Experience – Ideas That Provoke – Part – 2
2009-11-09 05:26:00
We wrote about day 1 and TED and how it was a mixture of Hans Rosling’s brilliance with numbers and Pranav Mistry’s brilliance with technology. Day 2 was a different day though. I dont think anyone in the audience expected the day to be so intense but it surely was. Day 2 was kicked of by a session called Reinventing Development and there are three talks that I would like to point out. First one being that of Anil Gupta who runs the honey bee network which brings innovators from all parts of India together. He showcased 2 very interesting innovations among many. First one being a palm tree climbers created by a coconut seller and the second one was a bicycle with floaters which could be used both the road and on water. This was again created by a simple man who wanted to go across sea to meet a loved one. His talk was centered around how innovations aren’t limited to the west or to great scientists and how each and every simple person can also be innovative. My fav...

The TEDIndia Experience – Ideas That Transform – Part – I
2009-11-09 04:26:00
The last 3-4 days of mine have been spent in immersing myself into an experience called TED. As you may have noticed we had blogged about the fact that we would be at TED and shall be covering the same. So lots of people tweeted about TEDIndia and many blogged as well. The reason Ive waited till the event got over was because I didn’t want to blog about each talk individually but about TEDIndia as an event as a whole. In my last 3 years and more of blogging experience Ive attended over 50 events (atleast) and each of them have left me richer in knowledge or in insight. But none of them have ever moved me to tears or made me go in deep thought or made me proud to be Indian all in the matter of days. TED which stands of Technology, Entertainment and Design is far more than that. TEDIndia infact was more a reflection of what are the grave issues in India and the brilliance and the fallacy of India rather than being specific to Technology, Entertainment and Design. So here is my h...

Shoe of The Week: Nike Trainer 1 Manny Pacquiao Part III
2009-11-09 03:31:00
I've been a fan of this series of shoes from Nike. Past versions have been featured here in the past and this version's lovely also. Don't know much about Pacquiao honestly, but damn does Nike know how to make his shoes. These are expected to be released around the time of Pacquiao's next match. Kix and the City predicts that they'll be a limited edition, which is too bad. I'd like them to be a full on release. They are that nice.Keep your eyes out for these and tell me what shoes have recently caught your eyes in the comments.

Toews returns to practice after learning concussions are part of the game
2009-11-05 16:22:00
Ever had a concussion?  It can be described as dazed and confused.  Ask Jonathan Toews.  The Blackhawks captain shook off the cobwebs and returned to practice on Wednesday.  Don't count on him returning to game action this weekend.  Then again, Toews didn't count on the Canucks' Willie Mitchell popping out of the penalty box and meeting him at center ice. I sufferred a concussion over two decades ago in a pick-up football game.  Add it to my critics' arsenal.  (No wonder my opinion's are a little off.)  I can tell you about the after affects, but don't ask me how I was concussed.  Couldn't tell you.  The details are not only a little foggy, they are non-existent in my...

Traumatic Brain Injuries : The Smoldering Issue Inside Hockey, Part 2
2009-11-01 16:15:00
This morning I woke up thinking about a conversation I had with Don Granato last summer on the subject of chin straps and head injuries. He spoke to me about sitting at his brothers Tony's bed side nursing him through a serious head injury and his long recovery. Fortunately Tony Granato made a full recovery and is now the assistant head coach for the National Hockey Leagues Pittsburgh Penguins. Again, it illustrated to me that head injuries serious and cumulative, are an issue in this sport and need to be addressed. Everywhere people have heard of "Shaken Baby Syndrome" it is a deadly form of child abuse where an infant or small child's brain is bruised beyond repair by simply...
Alex Eisenberg on Cubs Prospects, Part 2
2009-10-30 13:59:00
Alex Eisenberg of Baseball-Intellect rejoins us for more Cubs prospect talk, including his thoughts on '07 first rounder Josh Vitters, '08 first rounder Andrew Cashner, and some sleepers in the system. For Part 1 of the interview, click here.WB: Andrew Cashner's velocity was down this year to 90-92 after he sat high 90's while closing in college. Is that a pretty typical drop for someone moving from the rotation to the pen? Have you seen anything in his mechanics at all that could be sapping velocity? What's your overall impression of him?I'm not sure what's going on with Cashner's velocity.  I haven't tracked down any video of him this year, so I can't explain what might be causing it.  I'll...
What is the Best Martial Art? Part I
2009-10-30 13:11:00
This is one of two most common questions I get when I am at a party and someone reveals my profession.  The other is completely ridiculous - What would you do if I did this...?  Setting that rude question aside considering I am at a party and martial arts demonstrations are not part of my purposeful attire, I actually do not mind the other question. What is the best martial art?Quite honestly it is one of the proverbial questions we can discuss forever and all be right.  It is no different than who is the best super hero, best rock-n-roller, best composer and so on.The truth is that I first re-word the question for my inquirer.  What is the best martial...
Alex Eisenberg on Cubs Prospects, Part 1
2009-10-28 00:55:00
For those who are unfamiliar with Alex Eisenberg's work, he is the brains behind Baseball Intellect, a scouting website where he does some terrific breakdowns of mechanics of players' swings and deliveries. A great example of his work, just posted earlier today, looks at the evolution of Brewer shortstop J.J. Hardy's swing and tries to determine if he'll be able to bounce back next season.Recently Alex took some time to chat with me about his observations on Cubs prospects.WB: Can you give a brief description of the kind of work you do at your website?AE: It's a scouting service that uses both scouting and sabermetric analysis to evaluate a player's true skill.  I'm very big on the use of video...
Inkscape Tutorial - An Isometric Tileset - part 3
2009-10-27 15:02:00
Continuing our experiment in Inkscape 0.46, we'll find out how to do the more sophisticated isometric tricks. Skew Any object can be skewed, simply by using the 'transform' dialog. For instance, here's an old ray-trace of mine imported into inkscape and skewed vertically by - remember the isometric magic number! - 30 degrees. Quite handy should the citizens of your isometric town be taking in a matinée! You might want to scale the bitmap when you import it, smaller in the horizontal direction only. It will look crunched when flat, but after getting skewed 30 degrees it won't look stretched. This pretty much opens up unlimited possibilities. You can simply draw square tiles in any bitmap editor, import them, skew them, and mash them into the set. Here is a square I filled with Gimp's default 'pine' wood texture, which I then imported, skewed, copied, flipped, and overlapped a couple of sides of our base cube at 50% transparency so the shadows fit, then added a short bas...

Inkscape Tutorial - An Isometric Tileset - part 2
2009-10-26 14:51:00
Continuing our experiment in Inkscape 0.46, we'll take our isometric tileset from the previous part and add some more objects to it. A brick wall Some objects you'll want to set to a permanent color. Here, I've taken the eighth-cube base and opened the 'fill n stroke' dialog to the HSL tab, then, without changing the lightness, set the color on each side to hue: 1, saturation: 255. You can also change these colors if you want your bricks to be darker, of course, just remember to keep the consistent color scheme where the top is lightest, the left face is medium, and the right face is darkest (or however you decided on your lighting scheme). Additionally, because bricks have mortar, I've added a stroke colored just a hair darker than pure white. I've also duplicated that, making one cube and one brick shape: Now just stack-em-up, and group 'em together. Notice that I've gotten the face of the brick wall exactly to scale with the base block. Flat tiles To speed thing...
Inkscape Tutorial - An Isometric Tileset - part 1
2009-10-25 17:40:00
Oh, happy day! Now that I'm upgraded to Inkscape 0.46 on Ubuntu 9.04, I can start doing vector tutorials again. Today, let's see about making an isometric set of objects which can be quickly dragged around to build structures. The concept here is to have a vector pack, with which we can create images from a set of building blocks, in an environment where we know everything is going to behave. "Behave" is a keyword in isometric art; you have to be an absolute control freak, or the result will look sloppy. Start by creating a new document and changing the properties. I use a 400x400 pixel work area, which seems to be enough for storing a vector set. Now in the 'grid' tab select a new "axonometric" grid. I have mine set for spacing - 3 pixels, X and Z angles left at the default 30 degrees, and major grid line every 6 lines. This ensures that my major-lines area will subdivide nicely into halves and thirds. You will want to enable snapping here, too. Turn on as much as you're ...

Part Two: Obama=Nixon?
2009-10-23 05:16:00
My earlier post (Obama=Nixon?) suggesting a resemblance betweenHarry Truman's sage advice should be taken to heart by Barack Obama theNixonadministration's enemies list and the Obama White House going after its enemies drew a number of protests, outraged that I would dare compare the two presidents. But here's another post along the same lines that you might find interesting:When Barack Obama promised to deliver "a new kind of politics" to Washington, most folk didn't picture Rahm Emanuel with a baseball bat. These days, the capital would make David Mamet, who wrote Malone's memorable movie dialogue, proud. A White House set on kneecapping its opponents isn't, of course, entirely new. Pulaski Elementary Vs. Bucktown (Part Dos)

If you haven't yet read about the mistake I made, you can read about it here. Medicine can be a tough profession for a number of reasons, but one that really stands out is that I can never be sloppy in my work. Even when we're a little tired from being up on call all night, we still have to be just as attentive as when we're at our best. The consequences of messing up are just too great. We never ever ever want to make a mistake. However, despite our best efforts, sometimes it still happens. And trust me, when we do make a mistake that hurts a patient, we're devastated.   I wish I could say that I've...

Job Losses Aggravating the Crisis of Foreclosures (Part II)
2009-09-22 15:32:00
The prime loans mortgages are regarded as less hazardous to the subprime loans that are considered to be responsible for majority of people going homeless as they failed to repay their debts and unemployment added to their miseries. Richard K. Green, the ‘director of the University of Southern California Lusk Center for Real Estate’ observed that, “When people live in a housing market that’s dropped 30 or 40 percent, and they lose their jobs, that’s a recipe for default.†Approximately 4.3% of the homes in the U.S. were foreclosed during the second quarter. This indicates the foreclosure of at least one in 25 homes in the U.S. In the last three decades this is the maximum with overdue of loans by almost 90 days. This is the point which marks the beginning of the foreclosure proceedings. The number increased by 7.97% and this is the highest according to the record. The RealtyTrac survey conducted in Michigan, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Georgia and Illinois is recogniz...

Job Losses Aggravating the Crisis of Foreclosures (Part I)
2009-09-21 12:52:00
Presently the filings of foreclosures in the U.S. have crossed approximately 300,000 for the 6th month at a stretch. This is primarily the result of the increasing rate of unemployment that has prevented the homeowners from paying their debts. The number of properties receiving an auction notice figured to at least 358,471. Compared to last year’s records this is almost 18% higher. There were at least one out of 357 properties which received a foreclosure filing. Compared to last year the foreclosures increased as more companies cut down on 216,000 workers in the previous month. This added to the rate of unemployment by 9.7% as observed by the Labor Department. According to Morris A. Davis, who is an assistant real-estate professor at the Wisconsin School of Business, this unemployment scenario has superseded the efforts of the government or the banks to control foreclosures. Davis observed, “The foreclosure numbers are largely unemployment related. As long as 15 million A...
