HIV/Aids A Thing Of The Past?
2012-01-12 02:07:00
I am the first to admit that the occasional really big story slips by me. I get wrapped up in something minor like Child abuse and murder, and so miss the really big stories like a cure for HIV/Aids being announced. I have to admit that I am a little disappointed in CNN and Fox ...

2012-01-05 15:28:00
Fouling the air at Current TV.NYT's Brian Stelter: The broadcaster Keith Olbermann is famous for estranging himself from his bosses, be it at ESPN, Fox or MSNBC.At his new home, Al Gore?s Current TV, he has done it in record time.Mr. Olbermann, who was hired last year to be the top star of the upstart liberal news source, had been on the job scarcely three months when trouble started. He declined Current?s requests to host special hours of election coverage, apparently out of frustration about technical difficulties that have plagued his 8 p.m. program, ?Countdown.?The channel decided to produce election shows without him. Mr. Olbermann, however, said he did not know that, and on Tuesday, the day of the Iowa caucus, the cold war of sorts reached a flash point. He held a staff meeting even though ?Countdown? had been pre-empted.Perceiving it to be an act of defiance, David Bohrman, Current?s president, wrote a memo to Mr. Olbermann?s staff telling them that the anchor had long ago g...
Hartley Paces Huskies Past Cougars, 72-24
2011-12-22 03:44:00
Coming off a loss to No. 1 Baylor on Sunday night and the fact that the players' minds may have been on heading home for the holidays, you weren't quite sure how Geno Auriemma's UConn Huskies would come out and play on Wednesday night in Charleston, SC. One thing's for sure, he definitely won't be happy with the way his offense played, especially in the first half. But the defense was outstanding again in the 72-24 win over the College of Charleston Cougars at TD Arena in Charleston in front of a school record 3,863 fans. The Huskies improve to 10-1 while the Cougars fall to 2-8. Bria Hartley led the Huskies with 15 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis added 13 points and six rebounds. Kelly Faris had a great all around game with 10 points, six rebounds, three steals and led the Huskies with six assists. Jazz Green led the Cougars with eight points, hitting two threes in the second half. Megan Fischer added seven points while Cathryn Hardy led College of Ch...

Amazon Considered A RIM Acquisition This Past Summer
2011-12-21 14:15:00
Research in Motion (RIM) is in a lot of trouble and they know it. The maker of of the Blackberry smartphones has not made much headway in the product category this year. The only thing that people are actually expecting from RIM is the new QNX based OS they are going to launch. But unfortunately, these devices will not see the light of day till late next year, which really is a big downer! As other platforms continue to grow and advance, their platform is currently languishing because of these problems. Their venture into the tablet market with ‘Playbook’ has also not been very successful. All in all, a very dismalyear for these guys. Now imagine what would this year be like for them had Amazon bought them over. Yes, it would definitely be very interesting. Amazon had briefly considered buying out the troubled company to further their own advances into the mobile segment. Both the companies are tight-lipped about anything any suggestions of a buyout but Reuters is reporting that...

Is the Christmas Bonus a Thing of the Past?
2011-12-15 14:06:00
It used to be that most U.S. employers gave their workers some type of Christmas gift or holiday bonus at year-end. These gifts ranged from turkeys or gift certificates to cash bonuses equal to a percent of a employee's salary. Has the recent recession ended the tradition of the holiday bonus altoge

Visualizing 'Past Light Cones' in 'Closed' Space-Time?

The fabric of space-time may be considered, to be 'embedded', in a higher-dimensional 'hyper-space'. In 'flat' space-time, the 'past light-cones' (PLC), of an observer, at some particular 'event' (x,t), are some sort of "hyper-stack" of spherical shells, into some sort of "sphere-cone" hyper-shape
Balanced Effort Leads UConn Women Past FDU
2011-11-26 04:33:00
Coming off of an emotional and physical win over the Stanford Cardinal on Monday night, you weren't sure how the UConn Huskies women's basketball team was going to respond in their game on Friday night. Now, folks, there's a reason why they've won seven national titles. Head coach Geno Auriemma knows how to prepare his players for any opponent whether tough or easy. He really didn't have too much to worry about on Friday night though as freshman Brianna Banks led a balanced effort from the Huskies with 17 points in their 74-28 win over the Farleigh Dickinson Knights in front of 6,047 at Gampel Pavilion on campus in Storrs, CT in the World Vision Classic. The No. 2/2 Huskies improve to 4-0 on the young season while FDU falls to 1-4. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis was the only other Husky in double figures with 11 points. She just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Tiffany Hayes added nine points and seven rebounds while freshman Kia Stokes had a nice game with nine points, 11 re...
Backcourt Duo Leads UConn Past UNC Asheville
2011-11-25 03:41:00
If there's been one constant for the UConn Huskies men's basketball team this season, it's been the play of sophomores Shabazz Napier and Jeremy Lamb. And it was that duo of Napier and Lamb who helped the Huskies to a 73-63 win over the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis at Imperial Arena at Atlantis in the Bahamas. The Huskies (5-0) advance to the semifinals tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. where they'll take on the Central Florida Knights who beat the College of Charleston earlier in the day. UNC Asheville (2-3) will take on the College of Charleston at 7 p.m. in the losers bracket. Napier and Lamb led all scorers in the game with 23 points each. Napier added seven assists while Lamb pulled down six rebounds. Andre Drummond made the first start of his career and scored nine points while grabbing five boards in 22 minutes. Roscoe Smith shared team-high rebounding honors with Lamb with six to go along with his seven points. Matt Dickey paced the Bulld...

We Preview CASTLE’s ‘Kill Shot’: A Case With Echoes of the Past
2011-11-21 14:37:00
In Monday night’s tense episode, Castle and Beckett confront a killer in a case that hits a bit close to home.  A sniper is shooting victims seemingly at random and they have to race against the clock to figure out what the pattern is: does he pre-selects his victims or is all about the locations and mere convenience? But the real issue is not about the killer, it is about whether Detective Kate Beckett will completely unravel as memories of her own shooting begin to surface. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an insidious psychological reaction to extreme physical and mental trauma that can surface unexpectedly. In Beckett’s case, seeing the vulnerability of the sniper’s victims as they go about their daily lives resonates with her and she wonders about her own vulnerability — particularly as a cop who always lives in the spotlight tracking down criminals on the run.  Castle quickly takes note of Kate’s uncharacteristic behavior, and worries t...
Napier's Triple-Double Leads UConn Past Coppin State
2011-11-20 22:12:00
Given the way the UConn Huskies men's basketball came out of the gates, you have to wonder if maybe they were already in the Bahamas, the site of their next three games after Sunday afternoon's tilt against the Coppin State Eagles. But a strong effort from Shabazz Napier, who had a triple-double, helped the Huskies to an 87-70 win over the Eagles in front of 11,397 at the XL Center in Hartford, CT. It's the 15th straight win for No. 4 UConn who improves to 4-0. Coppin State falls to 1-3. Napier played almost the entire 40 minutes and was outstanding throughout. He finished the afternoon with 22 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds. Jeremy Lamb, who had been a game time decision after spraining his ankle in practice on Saturday, led all scorers in the game with 25 points. After being demoted from the starting lineup in the last game, Roscoe Smith rebounded with a nice performance off the bench with 15 points and four rebounds. Tyler Olander had his second straight double-double of 1...

Whale Look to Make Lost Leads a Thing of the Past
2011-11-18 02:21:00
By Bruce Berlet It?s a classic case of the glass being half full or half empty. The Connecticut Whale has led in all 14 games they have played this season, including by two goals in five outings, but they?ve lost half of them while compiling a 7-4-1-2 record. That?s still good for a tie for second in the Northeast Division, one point behind the surging Albany Devils, despite playing 10 games on the road. The Whale?s most agonizing losses have come to the team that they just played, the St. John?s IceCaps, and the one they host Friday night at the XL Center, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The Whale is 0-3 against the Atlantic Division-leading IceCaps (11-2-3-0), including 8-4 and 4-3 losses last Saturday and Sunday. The Whale is 7-3-1-2 since a season-opening loss at the Adirondack Phantoms, and the three regulation losses have come at the hands of the IceCaps, who have won six in a row, half against the Whale, and have points in eight straight games (6-0-2-0). The Whale are 4-2-1-1 (....

Lamb Leads Huskies Past Lions

It wasn't the brow beating you expected to see from the UConn Huskies men's basketball team in their opener against the Columbia Lions. In fact, it might have been closer than Jim Calhoun would have liked. But when you have a special player like Jeremy Lamb, just like with Kemba Walker last season, you don't have to worry as much as Lamb led the way with a career-high 30 points to help the Huskies to a 70-57 win in front of a sell-out crowd at Gampel Pavilion on campus in Storrs on Friday night. Shabazz Napier was the only other Husky in double figures as he had 21 points to go along with six rebounds, eight assists and two steals. Roscoe Smith added eight points and seven rebounds while Tyler Olander had seven points and eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Freshman DeAndre Daniels blocked three shots for the Huskies (1-0) while Alex Oriakhi led the way with four blocks. It was inauspicious debut for the highly hyped Andre Drummond. While showing flashes of brilliance at times...

McCombs, McCummings Run Huskies Past Orange 28-21
2011-11-05 20:14:00
The UConn Huskies inability to capitalize on turnovers coupled with the fact they committed five first half turnovers almost cost themselves the "Pasqualoni Bowl" on Saturday afternoon against the Syracuse Orange at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT. Fortunately, they did capitalize on a late Syracuse turnover in the fourth quarter when Scott McCummings scored his second touchdown of the game to help the Huskies to a 28-21 win in front of 38,769 fans. With the win, the Huskies improve to 4-5 (2-2 Big East). With the loss, the Orange (5-4, 1-3) fail to become bowl-eligible for the second straight week. UConn got out of the gates quickly as Nick Williams opened up the game with a 61 yard kickoff return. Three plays later, the Huskies found themselves in the end zone when now embattled quarterback Johnny McEntee hit tight end John Delahunt for a 10 yard touchdown pass. For Delahunt, it was the first touchdown pass of his career. The Huskies defense forced a turnover on Syracuse's ...

Cubs Take Game One As Castro & Pena Power Squad Past Sox
2011-06-21 06:00:00
In what was surely one of the team's best played games of the season, the Chicago Cubs took advantage of a strong outing from Carlos Zambrano to down the White Sox 6-3 in front of the smallest crowd to ever take in a Cubs-Sox regular season tilt. Starlin Castro and Carlos Pena recorded home runs for the Northsiders, and Zambrano pitched eight strong innings to pick up his sixth victory of the season. The game was a great one for the Cubs on many fronts. Despite going down 3-0 in a rocky first inning thanks to a Paul Konerko home run, the Cubs didn't lose focus, and they kept pecking away at Sox starter Gavin Floyd. In the third inning, the...

-By Warner Todd Huston After a poll that came out that showed that only 38% of Americans thought the president was actually born in the USA, the Obama administration has finally released Obama's long form birth certificate. There are several reasons that Obama finally did this and the biggest is that this issue was starting to hurt him politically as the poll above showed. Obama himself was irritated to note that talk of his birth certificate was everywhere in the Old Media detracting from the actual issues of the day....

2011-04-05 06:27:00
In front of the smallest crowd to take in a baseball game at Wrigley Field since 2002, the Cubs got a home run from Alfonso Soriano and six strong innings from Randy Wells en route to a 4-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Kerry Wood and Carlos Marmol worked a scoreless final two frames for the North Siders, and Geovany Soto and Carlos Pena drove in runs in the victory. The afternoon got off to an inauspicious start for Chicago, as Wells struggled out of the gate in allowing a lead-off home run to Stephen Drew's substitute at shortstop Willie Bloomquist. He then gave up a single to Kelly Johnson and a hard hit liner to Justin Upton before settling down...
My 11 Favorite Major League Ballparks, Present & Past
2011-04-02 06:13:00
The best season of the year is upon us: baseball season. While I am a fan of all the major team sports and without meaning to minimize the struggle of the unemployed, the fate of the foreclosed upon, the devastation in Japan, the bravery of those in battle zones or any other matters of greater consequence, something just seems more right with the world once Opening Day has ushered in another 162-game major league season. I have always loved baseball. In fact, other than eating, sleeping and watching television, it is probably the greatest passion of mine that dates back the furthest in my life. Heretically to many, I like both the Chicago Cubs and White Sox, with a bit...
11 Best Cubs Trades in the Past 50 Years
2011-03-10 07:07:00
The Cubs made a big trade this winter when they acquired Matt Garza, Fernando Perez, and a minor league pitcher for top prospects Chris Archer, Hak Ju Lee, Brandon Guyer, and Robinson Chirnos.  Given Garza's early spring performance, Cub fans are probably getting nervous that the Cubs have made yet another Lou Brock type disaster deal.  But I'm trying to be optimistic while it's still spring, so I decided to look at some of the great Cub trades of the past 50 years.  I was surprised to learn that some of these deals didn't seem so great at the time.  It gave me some hope. Perhaps Garza will pan out and become that top of the rotation starter the Cubs...
Past Performance Reporting Overseas: Does it Happen?
2011-03-02 20:05:00
By: Edward T. DeLisle For those who regularly read our blog, you know that we have followed the government’s recent concern about fraud and abuse in the federal procurement process.  The GAO has issued reports that recite such abuse relative to the 8(a), HUBZone and SDVOSB programs.  As those reports indicate, companies have been awarded set-aside contracts through those programs, but were not qualified to receive them.  In certain circumstances, the apparent fraud was so blatant that the hubris, which certainly existed to think such abuses would go unnoticed, puts Charlie Sheen to shame.  Yet, as the GAO reports state, even when the abuses were uncovered, many of these contractors continued to receive government awards.  It appears that some contractors performing work overseas in places like Iraq and Afghanistan may also be receiving awards that they do not deserve. As reported by Govexec.com, government agencies responsible for overseas contracts ...
Review "That Was Then": Past and Present Collide to Change People
2011-02-27 18:46:00
Contemporary vs traditional. British vs Irish. Present vs past. Two dinner parties center around asking for money. The suppers occur five years apart and simultaneously on stage. Seanachai Theatre Company presents the Midwest premiere of THAT WAS THEN. In a split stage, two different suppers are being interacted. On the left, Dublinites Noel and Mary need a loan from their guests. On the right, Brits Julian and June need a loan from their guests. During the first few scenes, it becomes apparent that it's a reciprocated request past and present. In the past, Noel is a raging blusterous alcoholic. In the present, he is a sober repenter. In the past, Julian is a cocky success. In the present, he is a blathering mess. When the spoon is on the other side, who gets helped? THAT WAS THEN is an interesting depiction of times changing people.

Stanley's big shot carries Loyola past UIC, 67-66
2011-02-17 05:47:00
Heroes are created in rivalry games. On Wednesday at UIC Pavilion the hero for Loyola was Courtney Stanley. The point guard's three as time expired in overtime gave the Ramblers a 67-66 victory over cross-town Horizon League rival UIC.Stanley received the pass from Terrance Hill and drained the jumper from the left wing as time expired. The shot came right after Dipanjot Singh had hit a big shot of his own, one over which there was much debate whether it was a three or a two, to give the Flames a 66-64 lead with 4.6 seconds remaining."The plan was just to get the ball up the court first so we could get a good shot," Stanley said. "I told [Hill]...

2010-12-19 06:15:00
Rockford's Alec Richards flinches as Chicago's Andre Deveaux takes a shot. The Chicago Wolves returned to Rockford last night to the Metro Centre in Rockford to play against the IceHogs. The IceHogs appeared to have awakened from their recent snooze, scoring first and continued to play the entire 60 minutes of hockey to win over the Wolves 3-2 on Friday December 17, 2010. While the game was filled with glass rattling hard hits, it remained fairly tame when compared with previous meetings between these two teams. They don't like each other, plain and simple. No fights, no scrums and perhaps only one scuffle that resulted in only a minor roughing penalty for the Wolves. The teams seemed to be concentrating on playing the...
