2008-05-15 15:02:00
Finally, Denmark gets a clue. Not only is multiculturalism a bad thing, it is a death sentence for any country that practices it. From the article: This haven of tolerance and openness has opted for survival and rationality. For citizenship, the country now requires of new immigrants: - 3 years of language classes - tests on Denmark’s history, culture ...

Amazing Mystery Pastries No. 1 & 2
2008-03-23 20:17:00
Note: If anyone needs a mime in their next movie or play, sign me up! I have now mastered the art of pointing and gesturing for things I need to survive while in Poland. The other day in Lublin, I went to a delikatessy and pointed to a random pastry in the window. It reminded me of something that would be fruity and sweet. I ran back to my hotel room so I could explore this awesome little Polish treat. I took a sniff, but that’s not sweet I smell! That’s garlic and spice! Taken aback, I didn’t quite know how to feel. It’s like asking for a birthday cake, but getting a savory quiche instead. I broke it up to find some greenish stringy pieces filling the flaky dough – maybe cabbage? Finally, convincing myself that even though it was not sweet, it could still be delicious, I took a bite. My eyes lit up with excitement. It was absolutely fantastic. And why wouldn’t I like it? It was garlic and pastry dough, together as one, just as they were always meant to b...

Hemp Seed Filling for Tarts, pastries, and Homentashn (Hamentashen)
2008-02-17 19:50:00
Well, of course I am beginning to think of poppy seed fillings, even if we have (blessedly) an extra month to think about them this year, and it seemed to me that the qualities of richness, mild bitterness, and just general seedlikeness (seediness?) that makes mon, or poppy, such an ideal pastry filling all work in favor of hemp seeds too, maybe even more so. My very first hemp seed filling is so delicious that I will be making many more, possibly a hemp and poppy mosaic sometime. Erin from The Skinny Gourmet will be hosting Kalyn?s Weekend Herb Blogging, where you will find all manner of plant-based sweetness. Hemp Seed Filling for Tarts, pastries, and Homentashn (Hamentashen) 2 cups hulled hemp seeds 1 cup milk (in this recipe, you can easily substitute soymilk or coconut milk) ½ cup agave (or honey) 4 cardamom pods 2 pinches salt Zest from one largish lemon, grated or microplaned Toast the hempseeds in an iron skillet to a light golden brown, stirring constantly. The canolli came from Fraboni’s and it was a mid-afternoon snack that follwed a Fraboni’s crazy-tasty sandwich called The Otto…I swear that sandwich is so good it defies logic…of course it’s filled with porky products. Vegan Pastries
2007-12-19 18:12:00
We were in Point Reyes the other weekend and stopped by the Bovine Bakery right on Highway 1. They had vegan pastries! We tried the vegan morning bun (with pears inside!) and the vegan scone which also had pears and currants and apples. They both were delicious. Delicious enough that we had the same thing again the next morning. It's not often that I have a sticky sugary morning bun so I figured twice in one weekend was OK! If you're ever driving through Point Reyes Station stop by. posted by: chickpea

Seniors picket demanding pastries
2007-09-24 06:17:00
A group of seniors protested outside the Koehler Senior Center in Mahopac, N.Y. last week. The issue? The center stopped accepting donations of pies, donuts and other pastries citing health reasons. The group is upset because they were not consulted and feel they have been treated with disrespect. But some are happy to see the change. "It was disgusting the way people went after them," said 80-year-old Rita Jorgensen. "I think the senior center did them a favor by taking it away."link

Starbucks: Serving Up Coffee, Pastries, and Worldviews?
2007-09-18 21:57:00
Let me begin this post by admitting it is a rare day that finds me inside a Starbucks. I have nothing against them per se its just I can't drink coffee and even if I could I wouldn't be paying $4.50 for it. Having said that, I love being greeted by the smell of their brewing concoctions, and icing coated pastries. Its a business model that has worked because it has raised the consumption of legally addictive substances to an art form. In that respect I applaud them in their success. No too long ago, however, Starbucks began serving customers something that they didn't expect: world views. Apparently some think-tank in a board room in Seattle came up with the clever idea to market coffee by putting various worldview statements on their cups in statements beginning with the phrase, "The Way I See it." I say various because the messages that appeared on the cups were quite contradictory. Consider the following two statements that were printed on the java giants signature cups:"Why in...

SOHH Official: Angela and Vanessa Simmons: Fresh Pastries
2007-08-21 22:37:00
Ok, this one's for the ladies: Earlier this year, Angela and Vanessa Simmons of Run's House fame made their foray into the sneaker game with the release of the Pastry Footwear Cake Collection. Their stylish lowtops came in a variety of flavors like Chocolate Mousse, Strawberry Shortcake, Red Velvet and Sprinkles (my personal favorite). Now it looks like they're going to step things up a notch with the release of a these high tops that I spotted over at Chic and Untroubled. In my opinion, these are better than the lows. I might actually buy them... maybe. What do you think?

Pastries from Absynthe Bakery, Surfers Paradise
2007-05-27 04:31:00
After being at the helm of the Queensland dining scene with his restaurant Absynthe, 2 Michelin Starred chef Meyjitte Boughenout opened Absynthe Bakery on Bastille Day in 2006. Located in the new complex, Circle on Cavill, Absynthe Bakery aims to "bring quality bakery goods to the heart of Gold Coast".We decide to drop by Absynthe Bakery while in the Gold Coast to see for ourselves if their pastries were as good as they were claimed to be. We arrived a little late in the day, and so the selection had dwindled to the remaining 7 or so varieties of tarts and cakes left in the display. I was initially very tempted to try the vanilla brioche, but decided against it, seeing that it had been left out at room temperature for what I think would have been a good part of the day. Another time perhaps, if I can get there early enough to sample it while its at its peak.So we ended up ordering 4 types of tarts between us, and we all eagerly joined in the tasting. This is what we sampled: a passi...

Sans Rival Cakes & Pastries

Sans Rival Cakes & PastriesI mentioned before how my family would spend summers in Dumaguete with the rest of the clan and it was a time of year we always eagerly awaited. Salzburg: Questionable Pastries
2007-03-23 17:45:00
Photograph by Miranda Siegel We don’t want to give Salzburg a bad rap, and we especially don’t want to give Salzburg’s incredible bakeries a bad rap, but we couldn’t help cringing after discovering the above-pictured cupcakes in a cafe display case in Mozart’s hometown. The display case started out cute. Men in top hats formed with cones, soldiers and clowns comprised the majority of the cupcakes’ characters. While our first instinct when glancing at their smiling faces was “awwwww,” it wasn’t long before we felt pits in our stomachs. We wonder if images like these are seen as overtly racist; it’s unclear whether this type of imagery is considered unhealthy or offensive in Austrian culture. Still…Salzburg! The last place we want to see signs of potential racial ignorance is in our treasured baked goods.
French Pastries
2007-03-17 04:46:00
The French do many things spectacularly, but pastries are one of the tours de force of this culturally- and culinary-rich country. From buttery flaky croissants to sweet cakey madeleines, it would be easy to eat these delectable treats with (or instead of) every meal while traveling in France. Since this is not the most nutritionally sound eating habit, there has to be a better way to get your fill of éclairs and macarons. What if you could take the rich delicacies home with you (without problems in customs or your beignets going stale)? While you may never be as good as the master French bakers, being able to reproduce canelés when you return home will not only impress your loved ones, but also take you right back to your fantastic Parisian vacation. During your stay in Paris, take a French pastry course to learn how to properly make your favorite pastry. If you are fluent in French and have the budget for it, you must take a pastry course at the Paris Lenôtre school. You will le...
