2008-04-23 06:44:00
Pat Burrell’s bases-clearing double off Manny Corpas in the ninth inning sent the Philadelphia Phillies to an 8-6 win Tuesday night over the Colorado Rockies. Corpas (0-1) was two outs away from the save when Burrell sent a 2-2 fastball past diving center fielder Willy Taveras in the gap in left-center. Read the full story.
Free Agent Stock Watch: Pat Burrell
2008-04-16 12:56:00
Phillies left fielder Pat Burrell was awesome in July and August of last year.  Outside of that, he was just decent.  He's off to a blazing start in his first 14 games of 2008.  He turns 32 in October and can explore free agency after the season. Burrell is earning $14MM this year.  Which players might serve as comparables for Burrell's next deal?  Carlos Lee is similar, though he was a few years younger when he reached free agency in '06.  Lee received $16.6MM per year for six years.  Burrell could be compared to Alfonso Soriano, who received an even bigger contract.  Hideki Matsui's average annual salary of $13MM seems like the floor for Burrell.  If he has a typical Burrell year, I expect him to want something in the range of four years and $60MM (similar to Travis Hafner's current deal).  The Tigers, Mariners, Rangers, Braves, Mets, Reds, Padres, and Giants are teams that may have left field vacancies after the season. ...
Appreciating Pat Burrell
2008-04-14 21:25:00
Before getting into the good stuff I wanted to take a paragraph to introduce myself. My name is Eric J. Seidman and I am a baseball fanatic/statistical analyst/superfan from Philadelphia. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to write here at Fangraphs in order to help further the tremendous work David Appelman has ...
Latest Phillies Rumors: Lowell, Rivera, Schilling
2007-10-12 16:11:00
Let's catch up on the rumors and minor moves involving the Phillies recently. One offseason objective is, of course, third base.  Abraham Nunez was an easy buyout decision; Pat Gillick will import a new third baseman this winter one way or another.  Phils fans can stop dreaming up A-Rod scenarios; Gillick won't pursue him.  Mike Lowell is the one free agent 3B on the Phils' radar.  While Lowell wouldn't mind playing in Philly, he made it clear yesterday that Boston remains his first choice.  So there's a good chance Gillick will have to get his man via trade.  Scott Lauber names Garrett Atkins and Joe Crede (free agent after '08, Boras client) as possible targets.  We all know how Gillick loves dealing with Kenny Williams (and the Sox can use Josh Fields at third base). Rod Barajas won't be retained; Chris Coste will serve as the backup to Carlos Ruiz.  A nice, cheap catching tandem. How about pitching?  Randy Miller has a source ...

State of the Mets: Swept by the Phils, Falling Fast [J. Mark English]
2007-08-30 23:19:00
"Met Fans Your Season has Come"...Thats what the public relations office of the New York Mets keeps reminding us. If this is the season that was meant to be, then what was meant to be is turning into a nightmare.Last Saturday the Mets, despite their problems at home, held a comfortable seven game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies. A mere five days later, that lead has been cut to two, and the red hot Phillies have found their swagger going into the final month of the season. As summer gives way to fall, the Mets are playing the part of a dying leaf, violently falling back towards earth. The Mets lost in four disturbing games to the Phillies. They were blown out 9-2 in game one. Their pitching staff could barely contain the potent Phillies offense as the Mets gave up 18 hits in eight innings. On Tuesday the Mets showed a little more moxy with Tom Glavine on the mound, but as soon as he left the game with a 2-0 nothing lead, fortune favored the Phillies. They tied the game 2-2 on ...
MLB: Rounding Third [Jay Moussab]
2007-08-28 23:49:00
With there star 2nd baseman returning to the lineup yesterday the Phillies crushed the Mets 9-2. With homeruns from Chase Utley, Tadahito Iguchi, and Met killer Pat Burrell and excellent pitching from J.D. Durbin the Phils actually looked like a playoff team. Willie Randolph said this about Chase Utley, "He's an excellent player. I'm not looking forward to seeing him."The Braves destroyed the Marlins 13-2 behind Brian McCann's grand slam and a 4-6 night off the bat of Matt Diaz. Lance Cormier gets the win as Scott Olsen gets the loss.In the AL East the Yanks get spanked by the Detroit Tigers by a score of 16-0. That was the worst road loss for the Yanks since 1907. The Yanks now face the Red Sox for a 3 game series. The Yanks are now 8 games behind in the East and 2 in the Wild Card. The AL West might be decided this week as the Mariners are hosting the Angels who are now leading the division by 2 games after beating the Mariners last night by a score of 6-0. Hot hitting Garrett A...
Why Doesn't Anyone Like Pat Burrell?
2007-08-21 03:35:00
There are certain players in baseball who constantly draw criticism for not "living up to their potential," despite putting up very productive numbers year after year. Alex Rodriguez was like that last year, when he put up numbers that weren't good enough for MVP, but were still excellent, and was still destroyed by the media. Adam Dunn is another example: often ridiculed for his high strikeout rates despite impressive power numbers. Pat Burrell, probably more than either Dunn or A-Rod, is the poster boy for this sort of treatment. In 2005, Burrell had a superb year and has continued to play very well since then. Nonetheless, most people seem to be treating him as if he is barely worth a starting job. The Phillies bench him every time he goes hitless for more than a game, and sportswriters incessantly scoff at every one of his strikeouts. But when the Philadelphia Daily News steps up to the plate to sermonize on Burrell's busted prospects, BTL is here dissent."I think the year Pat...

Jimmy Rollins had three hits and scored three runs, and Tadahito Iguchi reached base three times, had two RBIs and scored twice for the Phillies, who collected 16 hits and have ...

Pat Burrell (OF-PHI)
2007-03-09 10:39:03
Pat Burrell showed why the Phillies believe he can be the protection behind Ryan Howard. With two outs, Howard was walked and Burrell came to the plate. Burrell promptly went deep for a 2-run homerun. Burrell says his foot and back are fine but it looks like he will need contacts before the start of the season. Burrell should be fine and provide ample protection for Howard this year.
