Pat Tillman
2008-01-11 09:43:00
The death of Pat Tillman, who abandoned a lucrative football career to enlist in the army, caused a national controversy that undermined the military's credibility. The army originally reported that Tillman died at the hands of Afghan militants, but 5 weeks later, his family was told their son was accidentally killed by US forces. To some, Pat Tillman symbolizes heroic sacrifice for our country, but to others the questionable circumstance surrounding his death raises serious questions about the army's lack of accountability for the Iraq and Afghanistan operations.
Bhutto Falls by the Pat Tillman Effect: You'll Wonder Where Your Hero Went
2008-01-01 17:19:00
Pakistan?s Pervez Musharraf had plans to fix the upcoming election. Bhutto was scheduled to reveal this choice morsel of evil truth when she got assassinated. Bhutto had been due to meet U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., and Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., to hand over a report charging that the military Inter-Services Intelligence agency was planning to fix the polls in the favor of President Pervez Musharraf. The same thing happened to Pat Tillman: he planned to meet with anti-war activist and brilliant mind, Noam Chomsky, to reveal the real dirty insider's scoop on the wars against Afghanistan and Iraq. Then, Tillman was assassinated. This "Pat Tillman Effect" happens in places like, oh, Russia, all the time. Remember the death-by-polonium spy poisoning? Probably only made the news because it was a novel way of accomplishing the task.Makes me wonder, what John F. Kennedy or Marilyn Monroe were fixin' to do when they were removed from the realm of the living? I don't like the wa...

The Female Pat Tillman?
2007-10-06 12:51:00
A disturbing story comes to us from Beantown in the Patriot Ledger. (Hat tip to Crooks and Liars. via Memeorandum .. sadly not seeing this being picked up elsewhere yet.) Specialist Ciara Durkin was a young woman from Quincy, Mass. who enlisted in the National Guard in 2005 and was subsequently sent to Afghanistan. Her family was informed this week that she was "killed in action." A sad story, but unfortunately not all that uncommon. This one, however, has some twists to it. (All emphasis mine.)Ciara Durkin was home on leave last month and expressed a concern to her family in Quincy: If something happens to me in Afghanistan, don?t let it go without an investigation.Durkin, 30, a specialist with a Massachusetts National Guard finance battalion, was found dead last week near a church at the Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. She had been shot once in the head, the Army says.Fiona Canavan, Durkin?s older sister, said today that when her sister was home three weeks ago, she told family m...

The murder of Patrick Daniel Tillman
2007-09-18 01:57:00
Pat Tillman was supposed to be the gem - the poster boy of the great Pentagon PR spin machine. John J. Smalanskas explains: Pat Tillman was a perfect recruiting story for the U.S. military machine. A highly paid professional athlete forgoes millions of dollars to supposedly "fight for our freedom." My first reaction was hard to describe, but it was a combination of sadness and disgust. Sadness because deep inside I knew our post-9/11 country was being hijacked, and disgust because I wrongly believed Pat to be just another shallow flag waver for our dying empire. I?m not afraid to admit that I was wrong as I could be. (Others were also dead wrong about him. The cartoonist Ted Rall did a very inflammatory editorial cartoon about Pat that portrayed him as an "idiot" who joined the Army "to kill Arabs.") My subsequent reading and research about Pat and his death told me a much different story than my initial impressions about him. It also reminded me about not being hasty to reach concl...
Former Secretary Rumsfeld Testifies about Pat Tillman [J. Mark English]
2007-08-01 18:19:00
It got a bit snippy today in Congress, as congressmen pressed former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, about how the pentagon so mishandled the stories relating to the death of Pat Tillman. Here are some highlights of the questioning from Breitbart:Rumsfeld, in his first public appearance on Capitol Hill since President Bush replaced him with Robert Gates late last year, reiterated previous testimony to investigators that he didn't have early knowledge that Tillman was cut down by fellow Rangers, not by enemy militia, as was initially claimed. He told a House committee hearing that he'd always impressed upon Pentagon underlings the importance of telling the truth. "Early in my tenure as secretary of defense, I wrote a memo for the men and women of the Department of Defense," Rumsfeld told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. "You will note that principle number one?the very first?was: 'Do nothing that could raise questions about the credibility of DOD.' " Ru...
Pat Tillman: Military Brass Going Down [J. Mark English]
2007-08-01 16:07:00
The black eye that has hit the pentagon with the Pat Tillman cover up is continues to spread is ugly tentacles. Here is the latest from CNN:Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is scheduled to testify Wednesday before a House hearing on the friendly-fire death of Army Ranger Cpl. Pat Tillman in Afghanistan. Rumsfeld is expected to appear along with Gen. Richard Myers, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Gen. John Abizaid, former chief of U.S. Central Command; and Gen. Bryan Douglas Brown, former commander of U.S. Special Operations Command. All of the generals are now retired. Also invited to testify was Lt. Gen. Philip Kensinger, whom the secretary of the Army censured Tuesday for his handling of the military's investigation into Tillman's death. Army Secretary Pete Geren also ordered a grade-review board to consider whether Kensinger should be stripped of a star.http://img68.imageshack.us-/my.php?image=amerlegendslogo5w-j.gif
An unimaginable question: Was Pat Tillman Murdered?
2007-07-30 03:46:00
More than three years after Pat Tillman, the iconic football-player turned soldier, died on April 22, 2004 a headline asks Was Pat Tillman Murdered? We’re not talking friendly-fire here and the notion of his heroic death has long since been dispatched. We’re talking deliberate murder: three shots from an M-16 to Tillman’s forehead from 10 ...
Daily Kos: Was Pat Tillman Killed on Cheney’s or Rumsfeld’s Ord
2007-07-28 02:27:00
A very special diary post tonight at Daily Kos, the new home of the Democratic Party: Daily Kos: Was Pat Tillman killed on Cheney’s or Rumsfeld’s orders? We must be ever vigilantly cynical regarding the bloodthirsty, money-hungry cut-throats in the White House because they never disappoint the rudest and crudest analysis of their active and ongoing conspiracies. The vilest imaginings of Stephen King is where these deceitful serpents dwell. Never make the mistake that you are being too cold in your analysis of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell, and Rice. Let's call it what it is - assassination
2007-07-28 00:35:00
I covered the most recent news on Pat Tillman over at The Gun Toting Liberal. Yes, it certainly would appear the Pat Tillman was murdered by his fellow soldiers. Over at the Huffington Post Josh Swiller makes a good case that it actually was a political assassination. Of all the scandals and cover-ups perpetuated by Bush and the Neocon army, this could be the worst yet. It has recently come to light that Pat Tillman was killed by three bullets to the forehead. And not just three bullets to the forehead but at close range! That's not friendly fire, that's assassination. He then gives us a list of the facts that point towards a premeditated murder. The fact that Tillman was murdered was known by officials at the highest levels including the White House. Swiller concludes with this: The fiasco of the cover-up around his killing continues to go higher and higher up the ladder ... our president himself has blocked the release of information around the killing, claiming executive privile...

White House Continues Tillman Cover-up
2007-07-15 05:20:00
Panel Demands Records on Tillman's Death By Scott LindlawThe Huffington Post:"SAN FRANCISCO ? Two influential lawmakers investigating how and when the Bush administration learned the circumstances of Pat Tillman's friendly-fire death and how those details were disclosed accused the White House and Pentagon on Friday of withholding key documents and renewed their demand for the material. The White House and Defense Department have turned over nearly 10,000 pages of papers _ mostly press clippings _ but the White House cited "executive branch confidentiality interests" in refusing to provide other documents.House Oversight Committee Chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., and Tom Davis, R-Va., the committee's top-ranking Republican, said Friday the documents were inadequate. They insisted that the Defense Department turn over the additional material by July 25 and asked that the White House do likewise...."Cartoon Credit: ? White House and Pat Tillman
2007-07-14 17:18:00
When Pat Tillman was killed by his own troops in Afghanistan it was more than covered up it was turned into a huge PR spin by the Pentagon and the White House. Although Pentagon investigators determined quickly that he was killed by his own troops, five weeks passed before the circumstances of his death were made public. During that time, the Army claimed he was killed by enemy fire.Tillman's family and others have said they believe the erroneous information peddled by the Pentagon was part of a deliberate cover-up that may have reached all the way to President Bush and then-Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld. The committee said Friday it had scheduled a second hearing on Tillman's death for Aug. 1, this time to probe what senior Pentagon officials knew and when. Now the White House has refused to turn over papers that would implicate the Bush administration in the cover up.White House Denies Request for Documents in Ex-NFL Player's Death The White House has refused to give C...

Pat Tillman and the ?Elaborate Lies? of Psychopathic Rulers
2007-04-26 16:03:00
Lies. For the Bush neocons, they are second nature, as predictable as the sun coming up in the morning. Bush and crew lied about the events of September 11, 2001, about ?al-Qaeda? in Afghanistan, about Saddam?s weapons of mass destruction. Pat Tillman, the football star who walked away from an NFL career to fight a manufactured enemy in Afghanistan, where he was shot dead by his own troops, was shamelessly... [read more]

Re: No Negligence in Pat Tillman's Death [J. Mark English]

David wrote previously: I wish this was kept out of the public and handled internally. Personally, if a family member of mine was to die I would not have wanted them to do the investigation in the first place. What is wrong with telling the family of the deceased their son, father, daughter, brother or sister died in combat? Why do they have to know actually it was just friendly fire.On the contrary, it was the family that asked for the investigation. A family member (of mine) wrotein an e-mail: I am pretty sure that the Tillman family very much wanted the investigations and that they do very much care about the circumstances of their son's death. The story of Pat Tillman's death is not about the media doing anything, it is about the outright stupidity of the Army and the Dept of Defense and its ability to deal with the truth. That latter is more accurate. In a statement provided by the Tillman family said: Our family will continue to pursue the full truth about the circumst...
No Negligence in Pat Tillman's Death [David Stefanini]
2007-03-27 01:57:00
For those out there who are not aware of the Pat Tillman situation here is a recap:We all know Pat Tillman was a member of the Arizona Cardinals, but choose to leave the organization in order to join Armed Rangers and unfortunately ended up being killed in combat. At first reports said Tillman was killed in an ambush. Since then we have learned it was friendly fire that ended up killing Tillman.Investigators found there was no criminal negligence in the friendly fire death of Pat Tillman. I do not like who this is out in the media. I wish this was kept out of the public and handled internally. Personally, if a family member of mine was to die I would not have wanted them to do the investigation in the first place. What is wrong with telling the family of the deceased their son, father, daughter, brother or sister died in combat? Why do they have to know actually it was just friendly fire. None of us reading this post can imagine what the Tillman household is going through right now....
