Obamacare: Not the Only Path to Health Care Reform

Garden Path Ideas
2009-07-27 08:10:00 The path in my small urban garden wasn't really planned, it grew out of necessity and convenience. Before I started my garden everyone in the family cut across our "lawn" from the front stairs to the gangway to reach the side and back of the house. Once I started putting in plants I noticed that everyone still walked through the yard the same way and this resulted in plants getting stepped on. When the rains came water puddled and eventually became mud which people stepped in and brought into the house. One day my father showed up with a bunch of large concrete pavers and I took a few to create stepping stones in the garden hoping that people...

Visual art on the path to mainstream corporatization
2009-07-22 19:08:00 "When I hear the word culture, I take out my checkbook" -quote attributed to Barbara Kruger I write this after giving much thought to the brewhaha from the post about the the Bravo reality show, and firestorm on my Facebook page. It brought up the issue of the visual arts being cheapened by the phenomena of a reality show about visual art. For artists like Tony Fitzpatrick, it felt like a new bottom. But is this anything new? And are more gaping, vacuous "bottoms" on the horizon? Oh yes. ...
Sometimes Designers need to Walk the Path on Their Own
2009-07-13 18:05:00 I'm always happy to hear of designers that have taken the effort to turn one of their great ideas into reality. I think it is a great learning experience even if the result was a not a success. (Remember you learn more if you fail!) So if you have ever thought about doing the same, I highly recommend that you do so! I often belief that "Sometimes Designers need to Walk the Path on Their Own". By "Path" here, I mean the design process, or more specific to my statement, the attempt to participate in the entire design and product development process. In other words, coming up with an idea, creating a business plan, working out the marketing story, developing the concept, refining it, realizing it in CAD, manufacturing the product, testing it, packing it, selling it and even shipping the product.

So what if presidents ogle hot chicks who happen to cross their path?
2009-07-10 23:56:00 Several years ago, when I was running with a recently boyfriended fellow member of the DC Front Runners, our heads turned for a better view of a rather fetching fellow who crossed our path. “Hey,” I said to my running partner, “What are you doing? Obama Administration Has No Clear Path to Repeal DADT
2009-03-31 08:34:00 While study after study (after study after study) has shown that allowing gay people to serve in our armed forces would neither compromise unit cohesion nor morale, the Obama Administration is making little progress on repealing the Clinton-era Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell (DADT) policy, barring gays from serving openly in the military. This despite candidate Obama’s commitment ...

Up In Flames: The Path of Digital News Out Of China
2009-02-11 02:50:00 Last night, the CCTV building in Beijing caught fire at around 9 pm, the result of an unfortunate New Years' fireworks blunder. Not surprisingly, no news report appeared on television in the initial few hours after the fire began.Anyone who pays any attention at all to China will know that bad news faces many obstacles on its way to reaching the rest of the world. But in recent years new social media tools ensure that information can spread (pardon the pun) like wildfire. Here's the path that this particular story took.
Path To The Old Ones
2009-02-07 17:24:00 י"ג שבט תשס"טImbolgen 13This past week I've felt particularly under psychic attack. Literal happenings have contributed to this feeling, though their actual role in the psychic pressure surrounding me has been unclear. Nevertheless, right before leaving work yesterday, I was given mildly disturbing news. Consequently then, I went into this shabbat with a feeling of uneasiness and unrest. To get to the source of and to eliminate the negative energy disrupting my shabbat rest, I enlisted the aid of my Ancestors. Simply, my spell was "help me."A little later in the evening, I drew one card of divination from my Well Worn Path deck. That card was The Old Ones. The teaching of this card calls us to examine the foundation of our beliefs. The Old Ones of Tradition are prehuman Primal Earth spirits of the Forgotten Age in complete unity with Ancestral Memory. They stand, as a Multiplicity in Unity, as first stirrings of Human Awareness in connection with All, and in singularity as ...

The Path to Peace? Winning the War.
2008-12-30 16:06:00 Jules Crittenden, today, in a great and extended article: Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak wants “war to the bitter end.†Hamas is on the run, its terrorist infrastructure and personnel being blown to bits as we speak. All good, but at the end of the day, all that gets you is a pile of rubble and a bunch of dead terrorists, international condemnation, and you start all over again. So, what next? There’s been a fair amount handwringing about how this all goes nowhere, it’s a zero-sum game just leaves Palestinians more angry, prospects for peace in a shambles, shocked international community alienated, and then the cycle starts again. What if the exact opposite is true, and the destruction of Hamas is the best thing that ever happened to the Palestinians? Their game of murderous harrassing fire, after all, was the real go-nowhere game that kept the people of Gaza isolated, under the Israeli boot, suffering, wishing for another border fence holiday to cross into Egypt and ...

Continental Airlines 737 path off runway traced - The Denver Post
2008-12-22 22:59:00 More At The Denver Post: “The Continental Airlines 737 jet that departed a DIA runway Saturday night traveled nearly a half mile through fields, then up and over a taxiway and airport service road like a 4-wheeling Jeep before coming to rest on its belly a short distance from an airport fire station, a site visit for news media revealed today. The National Transportation Safety Board took a pool of reporters and photographers to the crash scene for a 20-minute visit shortly after noon today. The tracks made by the plane's wheels were clearly visible where they veered off runway 34Right and traveled over a field, crossed taxiway WC, then dropped down a steep embankment and traveled through a depressed area before bouncing over Kewaunee Street, an airport service road. One of the plane's main landing gears rested on the other side of Kewaunee, so it appeared that the jolt of hitting the raised roadway sheared off the main gears. The other main gear sat about 75 yards from the roadway...
The Path to Victory: Grassroots Republicanism
2008-12-13 16:44:00 Let’s start, with a premise: Every Republican president candidate since 1964 has had their level of success or failure, respectively, tied directly to the degree of voter perception that they have or have not turned their back on conservatism. Consider the history of the thing… and it all flows one way: Nixon billed himself a conservative, and successfully, even though in most respects he was a California Moderate, and came down more or less where John McCain was in the most recent election; to the left of George W Bush. Yet, Nixon had an electoral landslide in both elections. (Admittedly, the Democrats he ran against were a laughable lot, which didn’t hurt him.) Bush 41 figured if he bent over forward enough, the left would like him.  Remember he was doing what the Democrats asked him to do, re; the ’no new taxes’ pledge? How did they respond? By beating him over the head with the fact that he did what they asked. The voters did the same, seeing clea...

On Traveling the Sufi Path | Interview with Dr. Stewart Bitkoff
2008-10-21 19:40:00 "Lets rememberwho we are.each momentis another opportunityto draw closer."- Stewart Bitkoff"As our society moves forward in its study and growing understanding of different spiritual paths, one of the things required is a dialogue concerning the nature of personal enlightenment. Or said another way, after studying a particular spiritual path, for the average traveler, what does personal spiritual development look like?"- Enlightenment: An Initial Discussion. following is part 2 of the dialogue with author and educator Dr. Stewart Bitkoff. It was conducted on early October, 2008. the first part can be read here. Sadiq // Your training in sufi path is quite unique given that it happened in the heart of the west by an eastern teacher who in sufi term was a hidden teacher and timing wise it was in early 70's, which was also a very unique, changing times (equally true from planetary evolution perspective). Business Bankruptcy In China. The Five Fold Path.
2008-10-16 10:06:00 Will Lewis at Experience Not Logic dissects an Economist article to come up with four methods failing businesses in China employ when faced with having to shut down their business: 1. Informal Agreements With Employees and the Government. Work out an agreement with your employees and the relevant governmental bodies to allow you to shut down. 2. Court Supervised Bankruptcy Reorganization. The laws are too vague to give confidence to lenders seeking to lend to the troubled company, so this "relief" is virtually never undertaken. 3. Walk Away. Lock the gates and leave town and hope nobody follows. Hundreds of small Korean owned companies did this in Qingdao last year. 4. Informal Governmental Recapitalization. If you are too big or important to fail, get the local government to prop you up to save jobs and the local economy. I add my own fifth one, which is no doubt getting more difficult due to the credit crunch: 5. Get A Foreign Company To Buy You Out . Wh...

The Obstacle In Our Path
2008-07-07 08:00:00 In ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the big stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. On approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. As the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many others never understand. Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve one's condition.
