Open Letter to Obama Supporters from an Obama Supporter: Let the Contentio
2008-03-30 19:57:00 Senator Patrick Leahy called last week for Hillary Clinton to bow out of the Democratic Presidential contest. Not only is that not likely to happen, it's likely counterproductive to call for it. Hillary Clinton will drop out of the race when she's ready, and the only people she's likely to take counsel from about that are Bill and Cheslea. Further, if there is any chance, however slight, of Hillary winning, then why should she withdraw now?I'm an Obama supporter. But here, from that vantage point, are my takes on various contentious issues in the Democratic race to the White House:1. Let all the voting continue, in every primary yet to be held. There will be more than enough time, after the last primary in June, for the candidates to reassess their positions before the convention in August.2. Calls for a reduction in criticism of Obama and Clinton by Clinton and Obama are foolish. Although I by no means support some of the name-calling that has been going on (such as Jame...

Judiciary Committees Issue Subpoenas for Former Bush Aides
2007-06-13 21:29:00 Sara Taylor, former White House political director who reported directly to Karl Rove, was subpoenaed on Wednesday for documents and testimony regarding the U.S. attorney firings. On Wednesday, the House and Senate Judiciary Committees issued subpoenas for former Bush aides Sara M. Taylor and Harriet Miers. Harriet Miers was President Bush?s former White House counsel and Sara Taylor was the former White House political director who worked directly for Karl Rove. The showdown continues between Capital Hill Democrats and President Bush over Attorney General Gonzales and testimony over the firing of 9 U.S. attorneys last year with the issue of these subpoenas. President Bush has said previously that he would not allow his aides to testify publicly. ?By refusing to cooperate with congressional committees, the White House continues its pattern of confrontation over cooperation. The White House cannot have it both ways, it cannot stonewall congressional investigations by r...

Kyle Sampson appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee without being subpoenaed. Sampson was in charge of providing information about attorneys that were not falling in line with what the Department of Justice or with the administrations goals. Sampson said the way that the Department handled the firings was badly mishandled in the way that it communicated and executed the firings.Kyle Sampson's Opening Statement:Patrick Leahy's Questioning:

Photo by REUTERS. President Bush said on Tuesday he would not let his top aides testify under oath over the dismissal of United States attorneys. Bush also placed a call in the morning to Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales to issue his support to the man who has been under intense fire by members of both parties to resign or be replaced because of his handling of the firings. President Bush said he would only allow his top aides to be interviewed privately by members of congress and not under oath. ?We will not go along with a partisan fishing expedition aimed at honorable public servants,? Bush said. Bush?s reason for not wanting to have his aides called before congress was that he did not want the people working for him to have to worry about the kind of advice they give him bcause they might be hauled...
