2008-06-06 20:03:00 Paul Hardcastle - The Jazzmasters [1991]Jazzmasters Link 2After years of exploring dance and electronic music, Paul Hardcastle moved to contemporary jazz fusion with his 1993 album, Jazzmasters I. Recorded in late 1990 and early 1991, the album features Hardcastle on the majority of the instruments -- everything except the sax and flute, which are handled by Gary Barnacle, and the vocals, which are by Helen Rogers. Given that all the rhythms are programmed, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the album sounds a little stiff in comparison to the average jazz release, but smooth contemporary jazz is about textures, which Hardcastle has mastered. The material may be a little weak and the sound may be a little canned, but Jazzmasters I firmly establishes Hardcastle as a musician who can pull off contemporary jazz quite convincingly.Paul Hardcastle - The Jazzmasters II [1995]Jazzmasters IIThe adjective "timeless" is usually used in praise. 2008-04-17 03:42:00 Paul Hardcastle - Hardcastle 1 [1994]Link 2Paul Hardcastle redefined his career with 1993's Jazzmasters, turning himself into a smooth jazz musician. He expands on that approach on Hardcastle 1, hiring a large cast of vocalists -- not just Jazzmasters veteran Helen Rogers, but Caroline Dayley, Steve Menzies, Imani, and Jaki Graham -- while adding a new pair of reeds players, Chris Davis and Philip Todd. Since Hardcastle still handles the majority of the instruments, Hardcastle 1 has about as much breathing room as Jazzmasters I, but the main difference is that this finds him jazzing up his smooth jazz with worldbeat influences, typified by the breakthrough single "Rainforest." Ultimately, the music is still likely to slip into the background, but it's pleasing and illustrates that his talents as a jazz musician are beginning to deepen.Personnel: Paul Hardcastle (guitar, various instruments); Steve Menzies, Jaki Graham, Helen Rogers, Caroline Dayley (vocals); Phil Todd, Chris Snake...

2008-01-05 18:15:00 Paul Hardcastle - Jazzmasters V [2006]Hardcastle`s compositions bring together a blend of instruments that makes this genre compelling. The inclusion of three pieces with a lady with vocal clarity, Helen Rogers, work magic with Snake Davis' horn and add depth of this album. Hardcastle's interpretation of "Children of the Ghetto" with Rogers on vocals is a work of art.Paul Hardcastle - Hardcastle 4 [2005]On his latest album, "Hardcastle 4," Paul Hardcastle introduces some new, surprise elements into his unbeatable style of smooth jazz---some new keyboard sounds, some new arrangements, and the lovely singing voice of his lovely young daughter, Maxine, who is featured on three tracks, which she co-wrote with her father. It's a new dawn for Paul Hardcastle with this one! Fabulous, groovy tunes, such as the captivating "Serene" and "Freefall," "Straight Ahead" and the beautifully aquatic feel of "Journey Of The Lost Tribes." And Maxine's collaborations with her dad are all terrific: ...
