Paul Lo Duca Implicated In the Mitchell Report
2007-12-13 19:57:00 On ESPN this afternoon former Met Paul Lo Duca has just been revealed as using steroids based on findings from the Mitchell Report released by Major League Baseball today.Perhaps that's why a little love was lost between the Mets management and Lo Duca. Maybe someone found out something and decided they didn't want that tied to the ballclub.I liked Paul Lo Duca and it's unfortunate that he's being implicated in this. Although it does make me feel a little better about our current catching situation.More details to come.

Nationals Sign Lo Duca
2007-12-11 05:13:00 UPDATE, 12-10-07 at 10:11pm: The Nationals paid a fairly hefty $5MM for Lo Duca. This is for a backstop who hit .272/.311/.378 while throwing out a below-average 23.4% of basestealers in 2007. He'd better call a good game. FROM 12-10-07 at 1:59pm: According to Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post, the Nationals have signed Paul Lo Duca to a one-year deal. He apparently wanted $5MM; I imagine he got a bit less than that. Four days ago Joel Sherman said the Blue Jays were putting the "finishing touches" on a one-year, $3MM deal with Lo Duca. My reaction: eh. I'm not sure what Lo Duca adds to the 2008 Nationals that they couldn't get elsewhere for less money. I guess they could hope he has a big first half and then try to flip him for a prospect. Mets fans: is Lo Duca good at naturing young pitchers? That could be one decent reason to sign him. showad();

Blue Jays Meet With Lo Duca's Agent
2007-12-06 03:02:00 UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 8:02pm: Jeff Blair says the Jays made a one-year offer for less than $5MM. It was the Jays' last and best offer and has yet to be accepted. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 5:36pm: Joel Sherman says Lo Duca is "very close" to a one-year deal with the Jays. FROM 12-4-07 at 6:25pm: The Globe and Mail's Jeff Blair says the Blue Jays met with Paul Lo Duca's agent today. This discussion was expected; the Jays might only have about $2.5MM to offer on a one-year deal. Lo Duca earned $6.25MM in '07, so he might not be amenable to the huge pay cut and part-time opportunity. showad();

Latest On Torrealba/Castro Situation
2007-11-16 06:36:00 UPDATE, 11-16-07: As expected, Torrealba has inked a three-year deal with the Mets. Newsday reports the deal is worth $14.4MM. Since Torrealba was a Type B free agent, the Rockies will get a supplemental pick for their loss. FROM 11-15-07: One half of Omar Minaya's desired catching tandem seems set: Ramon Castro has signed a two-year, $4MM contract. It'll be announced after he has a physical. Honestly I thought Castro could've done better and marketing himself as a starter, but I guess he's happy in New York. The other part is waiting to see if Yorvit Torrealba will accept the Mets' aggressive three-year, $15MM offer. Adam Rubin's source speculates that the Mets could even make it four years with an option for 2012. How is Torrealba such a hot commodity? David Lennon and Ken Davidoff say Torrealba is now also mulling a three-year offer from the Rockies. We should know one way or another today. Torrealba and Castro don't make for...

Marlins Interested In Torrealba, Barrett, Maroth
2007-11-13 05:56:00 Joe Capozzi checks in with a look at the Marlins' approach toward free agency this winter. It sounds like the Fish are willing to spend a few bucks to upgrade on Miguel Olivo in the catcher spot. Do they go for the defensive-minded Yorvit Torrealba, or the typically offensive-minded Michael Barrett? So far the Marlins are leaning toward Torrealba, but would have to beat the Rockies' two-year, $6MM offer. And the Mets' level of interest probably just increased with Jorge Posada staying with the Yankees. Barrett has a Jeffrey Loria connection, but might seek a two-year deal for $8MM or so. The Padres might roll the dice and offer him arbitration. If they do he declines then the price for another team to sign him increases signficantly - a first or second round draft pick. The Marlins #6 overall pick is protected, as is the Devil Rays' #1 overall pick. In contrast, teams like the Brewers, Blue Jays, Mets, and Rockies risk losing firs...

Rockies Rumors: Atkins, Barrett, Fukumori
2007-11-08 22:59:00 What are the Rockies up to as they plot to defend their NL pennant? Tracy Ringolsby and Troy E. Renck have the latest. Ringolsby says Garrett Atkins is staying put, which should help the third baseman relax a little bit. This echoes Renck's sentiments yesterday. Renck also noted that the Rox won't be offering Atkins a multiyear deal anytime soon. Yesterday Renck said that after Yorvit Torrealba, the Rockies were considering Jose Molina, Paul Lo Duca, Jason Kendall, and Ramon Castro for catcher. However Ringolsby says today that Michael Barrett and Kendall are the main targets. Renck has come on board with that today, noting that Dan O'Dowd has contacted the agents for Barrett, Kendall, and Lo Duca. Ringolsby adds that the Rockies are exploring the Japanese reliever market, namely Hitoki Iwase and Kazuo Fukumori. Fukumori might appeal as the cheaper of the two. Meanwhile the Indians, Brewers, Phillies, and Mets like Brian Fuentes. We've a...

Rockies Expect A Quiet Offseason
2007-11-05 17:44:00 Nate Silver of Baseball Prospectus recently wrote in reference to the Rockies: Teams that overachieve expectations tend to keep everything in place, and in fact that?s exactly what Charlie Monfort is saying. This is likely to be one of the bigger misplays of the offseason. Indeed, no one is expecting any kind of shake-up or blockbuster. That said, Tracy Ringolsby indicates that teams will inquire on Brian Fuentes and Garrett Atkins over the next few months. The free agent market for closers and third basemen isn't robust. Ringoslby notes that Josh Fogg may seek the Jason Marquis special - three years, $21MM. The Rockies will pass, instead entertaining bringing Jason Jennings back. The Rockies are also expected to sign a veteran catcher to help Chris Iannetta along. Ringolsby names Yorvit Torrealba, Jason Kendall, and Paul Lo Duca as the options. Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post names the same trio. Renck adds that the Rockies will attempt to re-sign Ka...

Renck's Latest Rockie Rumors
2007-08-28 18:28:00 Rockies beat reporter Troy E. Renck had the scoop on all kinds of Rockie rumors yesterday; I'm just now getting to it. Let's look at some highlights from his column. Renck suggests the Rox take a look at Bob Wickman. Meanwhile, the Phillies actually inquired but aren't expected to work out a deal. The Indians will take a pass. Renck mentions that the Rockies have "long coveted" catcher Paul Lo Duca. Lo Duca should be there for the signing this winter. The Rockies will have around $45MM tied up in Todd Helton, Matt Holliday, Garrett Atkins, Brad Hawpe, Brian Fuentes, and Aaron Cook for 2008. Even if the team raises its $55MM payroll, someone has to go. By the way, locking up Holliday long-term will cost a king's ransom. He's a Scott Boras client. Given the burden of Todd Helton's contract and his no-trade clause, he may be immovable. But a .400 OBP is still valuable any way you slice it, so perhaps the Red Sox or Angels ...

Lo Duca and his Snafu [J. Mark English]
2007-06-29 17:48:00 Matt Cerrone from Mets Blog offers up the latest on the Mets catcher, Paul Lo Duca, and his slip of the tongue:Mets C Paul Lo Duca, during last night?s rain out, as quoted in the Bergen Record by Steve Popper, who gives a blow-by-blow of the event in great detail??Listen up everybody. Stop asking me when I'm going to drop my suspension. When are you guys going to drop it? I'm tired of being asked about it. Go ask Tony (Bernazard). God almighty, it's like the president got killed??You need to start talking to other people. It's the same three or four people everyday. Nobody else wants to talk. Some of these guys have got to start talking. They speak English, believe me.??yikes?the thing is, he?s a victim of his own brilliance?fact is, he?s a great quote, as evident by this post?actually, lo duca even admitted to this, calmly, when talking to wfan a few weeks ago?On June 15?s game on SNY, Keith Hernandez singled out Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado, stating that the two ...
