2008-03-24 02:41:00 Herman Dune played a lovely set at SXSW with Kimya Dawson joining him to sing vocals on a couple of songs including I Wish That I Could See You Soon. A very endearing song from a very endearing artist, although the lyric about spooning is a bit much.I Wish That I Could See You Soon is clearly inspired by Jonathan Richman, and my favourite Jonathan Richman song is I Was Dancing In The Lesbian Bar.I can also hear shades of Late In The Evening in I Wish That I Could See You Soon. Late In The Evening is the opening and best remembered track from Paul Simon's 1980 album One Trick Pony. The album has been slated by critics, perhaps more because of the film of the same name than the music (see also Parade by Prince). The critics are wrong. 2008-01-30 00:02:00 The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) will present a multi-part salute to Paul Simon during the month of April.Love in Hard Times: The Music of Paul Simon will start from April 1 to 6 with a concert version of his 1998 Broadway show The Capeman. The show, which combines rock, doo wop and latin styles, will be performed by Simon, Oscar Hernández and The Spanish Harlem Orchestra, original Capeman cast member Claudette Sierra, Obie Bermudez, Salsa and Ray de la Paz with a special appearance by Little Anthony and the Imperials.Part two will run April 9 to 13 and is called Under African Skies, saluting his music from the albums Graceland and The Rhythm of the Saints. Growing up in Queens, NY, Simon befriended schoolmate Art Garfunkel, who had an angelic tenor voice, and the two teamed up as Tom & Jerry, taking the names of the cartoon characters. In the winter of 1957-1958, they scored a chart hit with "Hey Schoolgirl"; both were 16 years old.Simon continued to try to score hits in the late '50s and early '60s, reaching the charts briefly in 1962 in the group Tico & the Triumphs with "Motorcycle" and under the name Jerry Landis in 1963 with "The Lone Teen Ranger." Album Review - ?Surprise? By Paul Simon
2007-02-21 17:47:01 Surprisingly good new album from Paul Simon… nothing like his old Simon and Garfunkel days, most certainly progressed a huge amount as a songwriter/singer, and he’s possibly become a lot more sour than he was when he was young. I did read an interview in NME or something and he said he thought all music from the 60s was crap, and that he finds it hard to find music he likes enough to listen to.. hmm… I think he might be bullshitting for effect. Nevertheless, this is a marvelous album. Fantastic production and ’soundscapes’ provided by Brian Eno, there’s a genius blend of different rhythms (DnB, Jamiroquai-style-funk, some trip-hop beats) over Paul’s classic melodies lyrics and guitar playing.
