With only less than six days until Spring Training, the battle for the fifth starter is heating up.Right now, it looks like Brian Buress may have now become the favorite to earn the position. The bats came alive today; however, more important, Buress went 5 1/3 innings, allowing no runs & six hits.I see him given the spot just because of the experience level, but he looked good at spots in 2007 and then wilted.Considering the expectations going into the season, no one expects Buress or anyone to set the world on fire, but you never know.We, at least know of one guy who will not be on the trip to Baltimore -- Jon Leicester. What a Game ..... What a stupid play call by the Saints Head Coach Sean Payton, to run a toss-reverse while trying to run the play clock out. Reggie Bush threw the ball away, our Bucs recovered, and McCown threw a Jerramy Stevens Touchdown Pass to end it. WOW Give a game ball, first and foremost to QB Luke McCown. You can't keep everyone; A's GM Billy Beane always says if a trade doesn't hurt then it wasn't worth it (paraphrasing). The point is, if the player is in the minor league system and other teams are interested in him, then of course he has value. To get something you have to give something. Since Omar rebuilt the farm system he seems very reluctant to trade any of them away and while I agree that they have value, it appears that he has over valued his prospects. Omar has said repeatedly that the market is very expensive, but the trades that have occurred haven't proven that to be true. Baltimore recently scouted the B-Mets and speculation is they were looking at Kevin Mulvey and Mike Carp. Now the Orioles are in serious discussions with the Cubs for Jay Payton. The cost would be two mid-level prospects, that's exactly what they scouted in Birmingham, two mid level prospects. UPDATE: While perhaps shopping Murton, the Cubs have had significant talks regarding Baltimore's Jay Payton. The Cubs would send over two mid-level prospects; does Murton fit that criteria?  Payton will make $5MM next year to finish his contract. UPDATE 2: RotoWorld says Murton was scratched tonight to allow Cliff Floyd to play and then get Sunday off. Matt Murton was a late scratch for tonight's Cubs-Reds game.  Does it mean anything?  We should know soon enough.  This time of year, every scratch or unexpected mid-game substitution is magnified. The Cubs have been talking to the Rangers about lefty reliever Ron Mahay and catcher Gerald Laird, so maybe there's a connection.  The Rangers could definitely find room for Murton in their outfield. Take it with a grain of salt, but a Cubs source of mine confirms Felix Pie's availability (huh?) and says the Cubs made an inquiry on Torii Hunter.  While intriguing, I wouldn't expect either player to be traded.

The Baltimore Sun thinks there's a nice fit between the Mets and the Orioles for outfielder Jay Payton. Payton is signed through next year at roughly 4.7m. Payton is currently hitting .271 with 4 HRs, 4 SB and 34 RBIs. He played with the Mets form the time he broke into the majors in 1998 until he was part of the SP John Thompson and OF Mark Little (nice trade Steve Phillips). The knock on Payton was that he was injury, teams have found that if he's used like Chavez as a fourth-fifth outfielder he's a spark plug but when used daily he breaks down. Payton had a great post season with the A's last year batting .308 with a Slg .500, 1 HR, 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. He is best remember in NY for a runner error in 99 that cost the team a playoff birth against the Braves. In nine years he has a career BA of .271, OBP .329 and a SLG .436.
