Double Chocolate And Pear Cakes
2009-09-21 16:34:00
When I look out the window, it is hard to imagine that Fall officially starts tomorrow. We have two seasons here more or less, Warm and Hot. Christmas celebrated in a summer dress, well, "it ain't fittin'. It jes' ain't fittin'" But there are signs that cannot be mistaken. Night falls earlier, the wind has finally picked up, the pecans are weighing the tree branches down. The light is now giving cold blue undertones, I put the diffuser back up in the studio, my shooting schedule has changed. Most importantly, the oven is buzzing with tarts, custards and cakes like these Double Chocolate And Pear Cakes, a gluten free adaptation of my mother's recipe.I like spontaneity as much as I like certain family rituals. One that my folks have back home is to get together for tea time everyday around four or five o'clock. Even now that my grandmother is gone, my mother makes the same one yard walk to my grandfather's and continues the tradition. One of my fondest memories is always this ...

Good day. I have an abundance of pears at my disposal. I like to drink. What is the quick and easy way to make alcohol from this? I will be using plastic 5 gallon pails. How much sugar? How much brewers yeast? What do I do with the pears, sugar and yeast? Thanks guys. Ian..

Chicken Soup with Pear
2009-04-04 05:40:00
Okay, before I feed you with some nourishing soup, I have something to tell you. Somebody out there hates me.Yap, I received a long hate mail a couple of weeks ago. Basically, the person hates me and wants me to close my blog. Apparently, he/she says my blog is a waste of space in blogsphere. He/she doesn't understand what I'm writing and looking at what I cooked makes him/her vomit (may he/she happened to have food poisoning), blah, blah, blah, and the list goes on .I'm a stay-at-home-mum who only started learning cooking when my elder son was slightly over 2 years old, that's about 4 years ago. I never mentioned anything about me able to cook like an expert. Nobody says anything about having to writing beautifully when you blog either. He/she must have really high standards for food blogs. :POh! One more thing! I didn't create a few hundred emails to subscribed to my own blog if this is what he/she meant when he/she said I fake my own readership. And I have never forced any...
Veggie Wednesday: Cauliflower and Pear Curry
2009-03-11 05:04:00
Last week we had one of those throw-together-meals for dinner. Cubed chicken breasts, bagged frozen veggies and bottled curry sauce. I also had a few pears on-hand that needed to be used, so I threw them into the mix. The combo of cauliflower and pear was so good that I decided to make it again as a vegetarian dish.Ever since my friend Jodie sent me a bunch of fun stuff from Japan, including several packages of Vermont Curry, I've been hooked on it. It's sweeter than most other curries and smoother, as well. I took the Wafuu recipe from Saveur and did my own thing with it, using pears rather than apples and using my own blend of veggie. Here is the recipe with my changes in blue. Of course, the curry blend you use will change the flavor of the finished dish, so make sure to use a curry you're fond of.Japanese-Style Chicken Curry(Wafuu Curry)SERVES 4Wafuu curry has a cult following in Japan, where many fondly remember eating it at home and at school functions. So it’s January and I’m still posting my Thanksgiving recipes…..Anyhow, this one was actually a last minute addition to the Thanksgiving menu. There was a total of 15 of us and I realized that one apple pie and one pumpkin cheesecake would be just enough for everyone, and, of course, just you don’t want just barely enough of anything you’re serving – you want to make sure there’s plenty to go

Poached Pear and Quince Frangipane Tartelettes
2009-01-01 06:05:00
On this eve of a brand new year, (edit: I was writing this last night) I have spent a good part of this last week reflecting on the year gone by while helping our best and dearest neighbors move. We dealt with it the only way we have handled life in the past three years on our street: a long table in the backyard, lots of oysters and a bucket of cold beers, all hurdled around a big fire, watching the kids run around, the dogs chase each others and the adult pretend they were still twenty and carefree. No, it wasn't all rosy but not everything is and as we went around the table and gave personal highlights of the year passed, I exclaimed "It's been a pretty fantabulastic year!".Professionaly for sure as I am currently buckling down in finishing the manuscript for the cookbook and working on a couple of surprises for you. But looking at all these friends gathered around the table hugging, laughing and reminiscing, my heart was soring for having formed stronger ties will all of them ...

Pear Wafers
2008-12-26 09:00:00
Oh yes, it's that time of year again. You know, the last meal before we impose starvation on ourselves. That's right, I am ranting about New Year's Eve and the "resolutions" the new year brings. This year, I vow to "lose".....all the toxic people from my life. My good friend "K" and "C" know exactly of whom I speak of. And I plan on "losing" this toxic person in style.I am thinking of having a glamorous New Year's Eve party with endless glasses champagne and fabulous eats. I will toast the New Year to being "toxic free."I am pondering ...traditional champagne for our aperitifs and rose champagne for desserts. Which means a cheese platter with homemade crackers is order. These lovely pear wafers aren't exactly "crackers" but they add the "glamor" I am looking for.The crisp pear wafers are stunning on there own and with a little blue cheese on top they are divine. The best part about the wafers is that they require hardly any effort. As I look forward to the New Year, I hope it...

Pear And Pecan Tea Cakes - An Afternoon With Grandma
2008-10-27 06:50:00
I'd like to dedicate this post to another great lady, Bri who passed away last night. My sincere condolences to her husband and her family.A post I was reading the other week prompted me to take out my grandmother's china and silverware out of their cases and bring them to life for a little while. The time of a dessert, a picture or a post. The time of a memory I might give my mother about a certain time in her past. I know I'll never be as creative as Pia in styling and setting the mood for the pieces I inherited but the moment was right to polish those spoons and dust off those cups.I started to take pictures of the spoons on their own and although pretty, something was missing. I made some tea and hoped that the smell and relaxing atmosphere would inspire me a little. It was allright...not bad, there was still that little "je ne sais quoi" missing. I took a step back and tried to remember the last time I had seen my grandmother use those pieces. Had I? Ever? No, not really.......
Buttermilk Pear Tart
2008-10-25 21:14:00
This is one of those random recipes in which I put in no effort and expected nothing in return.I am sure you?re familiar with this type of baking. For example, you have a cup of buttermilk about to expire, 2 pears that need to be eaten ASAP, one stick of butter, and you?re dying to bake something. So, you start ?googling? your ingredients hoping to strike gold with a recipe.I found a buttermilk cake/tart over at 101 Cookbooks. (I really love this site. I love the sides and main dishes from Heidi. She?s amazing!) And I actually had all the necessary ingredients (except raspberries which were replaced by the pears) to bake the tart.I mixed the ingredients, poured batter into the pan, and threw the pears on top. It was only until the tart/cake came out of the oven and I had a taste; did I start to feel guilty. The cake was unbelievably delicious. Which made me feel embarrassed for just throwing the pears on top. I should have fanned them out and added the extra touches that a grea...

Pan-Fried Pork Fillet Pear Chips and Mashed Kumara and Carrot
2008-05-18 11:56:00
This is a wonderful tasting dish it is a little more time consuming because of frying the pear slices, but the end result is well worth it. The entire meal can still be on the table in 40-45 Min's, so it not that huge of a recipe either. My hubby really enjoys this one and you will be surprised how tender the pork comes out cooking on the stove in this manner, as I usually marinate and roast pork or have a basting sauce. If you have been keeping up with the progress of my beautiful handcrafted camphor laurel chopping, cheese boards and Mezzaluna Boards. Apple-Pear Salad with Honey Dressing
2008-03-29 07:33:00
Summer is here and with it, end of March which brings in additional 'heat' of pending deadlines for events. I made this salad last week but was not very happy with the pictures. One would think I am quite used to posting bad pics on this blog but somehow, I feel bars have been raised now :D I didn't have time to make this again, so the post will have to do with bad pics.Pears are known for its mild flavour and firmness. This is why I like them best in salads and maybe poached. Wiki also says that in some varieties, its difficult to tell apart apples and pears. This was quite surprising to me since we get only one kind of pear in Hyderabad and maybe a couple of varities of apples. And reall, its not difficult to tell them apart easily.Anyway, I used up a couple of pears and one apple in this salad. I also experimented with some spices and flavours for the dressing and was quite pleased with the results. What I Used:Ripe pears - 2, cubedApple - 1, cubedHoney - 4 tbspLime juice - 2 t...
Ginger Pear Tea
2008-03-26 01:50:00
Here's a recipe for an awesome tea. It also does miracles when you have a cold, flu, or sore throat. The ginger has a spicy and invigorating taste that's very soothing for the throat. This tea can be served hot or cold. This makes about 4-5 servings. (I know, many people find the taste of ginger to be too strong and are simply not very fond of it. The name Ginger Tea scares these people off. However, the Pear in the middle helps make it a little bit more tolerable. I personally love ginger, so I don't mind.)Ingredients:4-6 cups of water2 inch piece of fresh ginger root2 pears (I used Anjou pears in this one. Others will work fine as well.)lemon juicehoney, to tasteDirections:Peel the ginger root and chop it up into thin strips. (I usually peel the ginger, but it's not necessary. If you choose to skip the peeling, just wash it really well.) Set aside.Peel the pears and cut it into quarters or eighths. Discard the centers.Boil about 4 cups of water in a pot. While the water starts...
Shaved carrot and pear salad with curry vinaigrette
2008-03-25 04:23:00
To pick a pear recipe for AFAM Pears, I tried food blog search, Epicurious, the USA pears website and finally settled on Food Network's simple salad recipe from Giada's treasure of recipes. As much as I was tempted on making a coffee cake, or muffins or pears poached in wine and served with ice cream, keeping in mind the summer attack in Bombay, an easy salad (easy on the waist) and that tastes good cold, was very much top of mind, which is what made me choose this.I have written several times about my love for fruits in a salad. The give a sweetness and a change in texture that makes a salad even more satisfying. So here's another vegetable-fruit combo salad with an interesting vinaigrette. Curry powder in a vinaigrette? The French may turn their pretty noses at this one, but the taste is completely new and wonderful. If the world loves our curry, they will surely love this unusual flavour in a dressing!Shaved carrot and pear salad in curry vinaigretteTime taken - Under 10 minut...

As we herald spring in most of the parts of the country, seasonal fruits and vegetables can be seen in all their glory, and a trip to the farmer's market can turn out to be a visually delectable experience! Oranges, pears and strawberries are flocking the markets in California, and what better way to binge on the goodness of these fruits than to bake them in a cake! Juicy and sweet, with a soft, buttery yet somewhat grainy texture, the whitish-grren as well as the red pears were once referred... Please Click the Title for the Full Post

Your Garden, Prickley Pear, and the Wild West
2008-02-18 22:49:00
Ever eat the fruit from a cactus bush? If you've tried prickly pear, then you have! Prickly pear used to be extremely widespread in the "wild west" and is still commonly found in the western U.S. today. In the Belwood area of Los Gatos, you can find it in at least three places: along Harwood Road, on Bacigalupi Drive and at Westhill and Belgatos Roads. The fruit makes a nice jelly or can be eaten raw. It's more than just a hearty fruit on a formidable looking plant, though. Back in the days of settlers, this cactus had an extremely important use, it kept the bears out. It grows into something of a tall, thick wall and develops large, strong, sharp needles. You'd think twice before getting too close to it. So did the grizzlies. So the settlers grew prickly pear around the perimeter of their homes like a tall fence or wall, and the cabins were much better fortified against hungry intruders with sharp teeth and claws. All the better t...

Turnip and Pear Soup
2008-01-29 13:10:00
How can someone, especially someone who purports to be interested in healthy eating and vegetables, reach the ripe old age of 40-something and still never have tasted a turnip?  Shocking, I know; but yes, indeed, that someone is moi.   I blame it all on Modern American Drama. One of the first courses I took as a university student, it was taught by my mentor, John Ditsky , for whom I harbored a 20 year-long crush (but that’s neither here nor there). Truly, since my undergrad days, whenever I’d think of turnips, all that came to mind was that scene in which Estragon asks Vladimir for a carrot but gets handed a turnip instead–and the turnip, having resided in his filthy coat pocket for who knows how long, is not exactly an appetizing substitute.  So, for many years, just the thought of turnips would throw me into a bout of existential angst. I believed turnips to be the unwanted progeny of carrots.  Or perhaps parsnips. Or, on the other hand, just a...
Humor jokes-A pear
2008-01-28 19:26:00
A blonde was passing a fruit stand when she suddenly realized how hungry she was."Give me a pear, please." said the bouncy blonde."That will be fifty cents." said the clerk. She ate the pear, but was still hungry, so she ordered another. Still hungry after the second pear, she ordered an apple. After eating the apple she was finally full and wanted a drink, but found that she didn't have enough money left."Darn it!" she said to herself, "If I had ordered the apple first I would still have enough money left for that drink!"

Caramel Pear Birthday Drink Recipe
2008-01-24 19:47:00
As anyone who knows me knows I love to try new things...I especially enjoy making & or trying new food or drink recipes, and I like to think the people around me enjoy being the taste testers. Last Sunday while working I decided to tune in to the Food network, one of my favorite channels to watch either while running on the tredmill, or to listen to while working on the computer... so while typed away I just happen to tune into the new show 2 Dudes Catering. Great new show! The specialty drink recipe they had on the Carmel Pear sounded so completely yummy I had to stop working and log on to the food network to print it out. It is one of my girlfriends birthday is this weekend so yeah I will have plenty of guineai pigs to try it out on. Nutty Pear Compote
2008-01-24 06:01:00
pera/pearNutty Pear CompoteI have a tendency to focus on an ingredient for a while after the ingredient and I have had a successful interaction. That ingredient was gelatin this week. I did such an injustice to my November attempt with gelatin, but was quite stoked when my tomato terrine worked out. I had to keep it rollin?! So, I decided to try doin? something with the canned pears that were sitting in the cabinet. It was time to eat them, use them, or get rid of them before the expiration. So, tried going the terrine route and ended up with a jelly thing. The ingredients make it a candidate for Julia and Scott?s In the Bag. It couples well with goat cheese and is lovely with an added balsamic glaze.Pear Compote2 28-oz cans sliced pears (in water)1 cup sugar1 cup water1 Tbsp. lemon juice2 packs gelatin powder˝ cup of nuts, chopped or whole ? your preferencePuree the pears & lemon in a food processor. Apple, Pear and Almond Crostata
2008-01-19 21:16:00
Crostata is yet another food that has many, many versions. The traditional "home" made crostata is simply pie dough topped with jam and sometimes a lattice of dough. Other versions, like this one, are made with whole fruit like apples or berries. Some use almond paste as a base under the fruit. I made this last evening to go with on of our favorite dinners of pasta with marinara and meatballs and my own cheese bread. Delicious!Apple, Pear and Almond CrostataDough:1 cup flour1 T sugar1/4 t salt1 stick butter - diced2 - 3 T ice waterStir flour, sugar and salt together well. Add butter and rub together until crumbly. Add water 1 T at a time until dough forms a firm ball. Flatten and chill between waxed paper while prepping fruit. Banana Soy Muffins with pomegranate pear syrup
2008-01-19 20:11:00
Weekend Breakfast Blogging had my attention over the last couple of days - after the soy pancakes turned out great, I really wanted to make another soy-based breakfast recipe. Kind of hard to work primarily with soy flour though - it has no gluten content, which means no elasticity and there is no assistance during fermentation which is what helps the bread rise when baking. In addition to these, gluten helps keep the shape of the bread since it firms up when cooked. Gluten resources for those interested:Gluten on WikipediaGluten composition in cereals and gluten diseaseGluten free recipes Anyway, after poking around several cookbooks and sites, I couldn't quite find any cake or bread recipe that didn't use a combination of soy flour with either wheat or rice or triticum flour. Oh well, guess I just had to try it out - and hope that the end result is somewhat edible. I decided to play it safe and try a banana muffin recipe with soy flour. And to make things even simpler, I mic...
