National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day 2008 VIDEO
2008-12-06 00:14:00
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of AmericaOn National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, we mourn the more than 2,400 Americans whose lives were lost in the surprise attack on our homeland that changed the course of history. Their service and sacrifice and the service and sacrifice of all our World War II veterans will be forever honored on this day by the citizens of a free and grateful Nation. On December 7, 1941, the enemy nearly destroyed our Pacific Fleet, and the United States was forced into a long and terrible war. A generation of Americans stepped forward to fight for our country. Their message to America's enemies was clear: If you attack this country and harm our people, there is no corner of the Earth remote enough to protect you from the reach of our Nation's Armed Forces.Following the war the United States worked to make our most bitter enemies into our closest friends through the transformative power of freedom. The joys of liberty are often secured b...

66th Anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor
2007-12-07 15:43:00
Today was the 65th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor by Naval Air Forces of the Japanese Empire.   The Arizona sank in less than nine minutes after a 1,760 pound armor-piercing bomb struck and pierced the battleship's deck and detonated in its ammunition magazine, igniting fires that engulfed the ship. Four in five servicemen on the USS Arizona 1,177 in all did not survive the day.   It was the greatest loss of life of any ship in U.S. naval history.   More people died on the Arizona than any other ship as 1,177 servicemen, or about 80% of the Arizona's crew, perished.   The surprise attack which began at 07:55am local time killed 2,390 Americans and injured 1,178.   Twelve ships sank and nine vessels were heavily damaged. Over 320 U.S. aircraft were destroyed or heavily damaged by the time the invading planes were done sweeping over military bases from Wheeler Field to Kaneohe Naval Air Station.   The last of the Surviving Veterans s...

December 7: More Than Pearl Harbor
2007-11-30 09:50:00
by Mickey Z While December 7 marks the 66th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, I'd rather reflect upon December 7, 1975. This reflection involves, among others, former New York Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and requires a geography question: What nation has the largest Muslim population? Not Saudi Arabia, Iran, or Egypt; it's Indonesia. With a populace more than 90 percent Islamic, this South East Asian island nation has avoided America's notorious anti-Muslim bent by holding claim to the South Pacific's largest supply of oil, the world's most abundant reserve of natural gas, and a very brutal anti-communist history. While Palestinian Muslims are labeled terrorists for having the audacity to revolt against 60 years of Israeli occupation, Indonesian Muslims can get away with murder. Literally. More geography: East Timor is another island nation‹a former Portuguese colony just above Australia that became the targ...
