Ear Infection Superbug Found Resistant To All Pediatric Antibiotics
2007-11-20 15:26:00 Ear Infection Superbug Discovered To Be Resistant to All Pediatric Antibiotics Researchers have discovered a strain of bacteria resistant to all approved drugs used to fight ear infections in children, according to an article published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). A pair of pediatricians discovered the strain because it is their standard practice to perform an uncommon procedure called tympanocentesis (ear tap) on children when several antibiotics fail to clear up their ear infections. The procedure involves puncturing the child’s eardrum and draining fluid to relieve pressure and pain. Analyzing the drained fluid is the only way to describe the bacterial strain causing the infection. Even after the ear tap and additional rounds of antibiotics, infections persisted in a small group of children in a Rochester, New York, pediatric practice, leading to ear tube surgery and, in one case, to permanent hearing loss. The physicians realized they may be...

Early Early Screening Urged for Autism by US Pediatricians
2007-10-29 11:13:00 The American Academy of Pediatrics will be recommending that all children be screened twice for autism by age 2 to allow maximum benefit from early intervention. The AAP points out early indicators of autism such as 4-month-olds not smiling at the sound of Mom or Dad's voice, babies who don't babble at 9 months, 1-year-olds who don't point to toys, or the loss of language or social skills at any age. Conor was diagnosed 9 1/2 years ago at age 2. At that time, in New Brunswick, age 2 was an early diagnosis age for autism and we had no idea what autism was until Conor was diagnosed, initially with PDD-NOS, and as the severity of his autism became more obvious, with Autism Disorder. The early indicators for us were his failure to smile or show any response to peek a boo and other playful interaction. He had persistent fascination with sand, sifting it for lengthy periods of time but we did not find that alarming. His failure to develop any language skills by 12-14 months (other...
Pay in pediatrics is bad
2007-10-18 03:48:00 Workers in pediatric hospitals are notoriously paid less than a normal one. My question is, how much less? I would like to work at a pediatric hospital once I am older, but I would also like to move out of the house eventually. Since my annual income is -$5000, I need to make some money quick. It?s not my strong dislike of senior citizens that makes me want to work at a pediatric hospital, but my profound platonic love for kids. Why are pediatric hospital workers paid less? It makes more sense to me that they would be paid more. You know; children are our future or some crap. Is the pay really that much of a difference?---I'd also like to talk about the blogrolls a little bit.Day to Day Random Awesomeness is created by a friend on mine. There is no rhyme or reason about his weekly rants.Respiratory Therapy 101: Just Keep Breathing is an interesting blog about the life of a real RT.

Dr. Wendy Edwards, Pediatrician and Autism Mother, Advocates Treating Auti
2007-09-30 17:22:00 The Times Colonist has an article on yesterday's Autism Canada conference and its focus on treating autism as a whole body medical illness. Speakers included Dr. Derrick MacFabe of the UWO team which recently released its findings on proprionic acid and Dr. Martha Herbert of the Harvard Medical School. Much of the article though focused on Dr. Wendy Edwards, a Southern Ontario pediatrician whose son was diagnosed with autism at age 3. The message at the conference as summarized by the Times Colonist is that autism is a full body illness and is not limited to the brain.Dr. Edwards advocates the use of biomedical treatments in addition to applied behaviour analysis in treating autism. She recommends diets aimed at eliminating toxins and reducing digestive tract inflammation and describes some elements of such diets including melatonin, antioxidants and the GF-CF free diet. Dr. Edwards acknowledges that her biomedical recommendations are not supported by scientific study but...
Treating Pediatric Bed-Wetting with Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine
2007-09-26 00:48:00 Treating Pediatric Bed-Wetting with Acupuncture & Chinese MedicineBy Robert HelmerA Book Review Bed-Wetting, or Primary Nocturnal Enuresis (PNE), is a very common pediatric problem, though one that most families do not like to discuss openly. It is estimated that as many as 20% of five year-olds, 10% of six year-olds and even 1% of 15 year-olds experience an inability to control night time urination. While there may be a medical condition that is causing the problem, and every child should be tested to rule out such conditions, only 1-3% of enuresis cases have an organic cause that is identifiable by Western medical tests.

Pediatric ECG Interpretation: An Illustrative Guide
2007-09-18 22:33:00 Pattern recognition is an important learning tool in the interpretation of ECGs. Unfortunately, until faced with a patient with an arrhythmia or structural heart disease, pediatric practitioners generally receive limited exposure to ECGs. The ability to clearly distinguish an abnormal ECG pattern from a normal variant in an emergency situation is an essential skill, but one that many pediatricians feel ill-prepared to utilize confidently. In Pediatric ECG Interpretation: An Illustrative Guide, Drs. Deal, Johnsrude and Buck aim to address this issue by illustrating many of the ECG patterns a pediatric practitioner is likely to encounter. ECG illustrations with interpretations are presented in several categories: normal children of all ages, acquired abnormalities such as hypertrophy or electrolyte disorders, and common congenital heart disease lesions. Later sections cover bradycardia, supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias, and a basic section on pacemaker ECGs. Simple techniqu...
