2008-05-22 14:07:00
Right-hander Pedro Martinez of the New York Mets returned to the Dominican Republic to be with his sick father, delaying plans to test his ailing hamstring. Martinez had planned to rejoin the club for a bullpen session Wednesday. But Martinez changed his plans after receiving an e-mail that said his 78-year-old cancer-stricken father, Pablo Jaime, had suffered a setback.

Pedro Martinez recovering slowly from hamstring injury
2008-05-15 14:28:00
New York Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez threw a four-inning, 55-pitch simulated game in Port St. Lucie as he continued his recovery from a strained left hamstring, Omar Minaya said. The GM said Martinez successfully fielded a bunt and covered first base, but warned it's difficult to declare that the pitcher had definitively cleared a hurdle since he has yet to pitch in a minor-league game. "The adrenaline is going to be different, so you just don't know," Minaya said. Minaya said Martinez likely would pitch in another simulated game, ramping up to 75-80 pitches, before advancing to a rehab game with St. Lucie. That scenario would mean Martinez would return no sooner than the May 29-June 1 Dodgers series at Shea.
Erik Bedard And Pedro Martinez Injury Update
2008-04-16 21:27:00
Once again, Baseball Prospectus has provided the scrambled porn version of Will Carroll's Under The Knife Column for those who can't afford to subscribe.  The latest injury updates for Seattle Mariners' LHP Erik Bedard and New York Mets' Pedro Martinez are above the subscriber fold - to mix metaphors.  There are several others including Will's revelation about why he tabbed Manny Acosta as the Braves closer last week along with updates on Randy Johnson and Alfonso Soriano. When "torn labrum" and a pitcher of Erik Bedard's importance are paired together, ears perk.  There doesn't seem to be anywhere near the level of concern that pair elicits though, but I am nervous - and I don't own Bedard on any of my fantasy rosters. Pedro Martinez doesn't bother me as much because I never really believed in him.  Maybe that is because my local papers are New York ones and the endless drama of Pedro over the past three years are become tiresome.  Maybe it was tha...

Pedro Martinez And Other Fantasy Notes From Yesterday
2008-04-02 17:10:00
Thank you to Chris Liss of the "Rotowire Fantasy Sports Hour" on Xm Radio Channel 144 for having me on last night's show.  One topic we touched on was the Dodgers' line-up from yesterday's 3-2 win against the San Francisco Giants.  Andre Ethier was again starting, but Matt Kemp wasn't.  Juan Pierre got the start in his place. This looks no better than manager Joe Torre's decision not to extend Pierre's consectuive game streak the nigh before.  Why make that irreversible decision and then start Pierre the next day?  Over the team's best hitter?  Any celebrating over Juan Pierre's head being on a spike was premature. Pedro Martinez left his 2008 debut after a poping in his hamstring.  This could force the Mets into a temporary rotation of Johan Santana, John Maine, Oliver Perez, Mike Pelfrey and who?  With little pitching or prospect depth, a black cloud just settled over Flushing.  Worse, Pedro was getting hit hard by one of the wo...

Pedro Martinez is ready to go
2008-03-22 14:34:00
Pedro Martinez didn't need to pitch in Friday's Grapefruit League game to know he's healthy. His body tells him that on the back fields, when he throws the ball like he did a decade ago according to the New York Daily News. "You pick it up and throw it and know that nothing is going to bother you," Martinez said. "You enjoy when you're able to go out there with everybody and do like everybody else does and not have to worry about anything." Martinez felt so good pitching five innings on Friday against the Nationals, he suggested he was capable of pitching another two or three innings on top of his 71-pitch effort. Despite trouble gripping his breaking pitches because of a wind that dried the balls, Martinez held Washington to two runs and five hits while striking out four and walking none in the Mets' 8-2 victory.

Pedro Martinez Enters Contract Year
2008-02-01 10:20:00
Pedro Martinez signed a four-year, $53MM deal with the Mets in December of 2004.  That deal has just $11MM left on it for the '08 season.  According to his agent, Pedro plans to continue playing for a long time if he's healthy. 2008 will obviously be huge.  Pedro is 36 now.  He made five starts in September of '07, pitching reasonably well in all of them (4.6 K/BB).  If he can give the Mets 180 strong innings as their #2 starter, he could ask for something in the range of three years, $45MM.

It's Official, Pedro Is Back [David Stefanini]
2007-09-02 17:08:00
New York Mets fan the day we have been waiting for has arrived (or it will tomorrow). The New York Mets have announced, they were so impressed with Pedro's bullpen session on Saturday, that they are going to let the ace take the mound on Monday against the Cincinnati Reds.Let's not get our hopes up yet. Pedro will be on a strict, 75 pitch count and not be allowed to throw more than 35 in one inning. There is no way of telling just how effective Pedro will be. Met's physician, David Altchek, who performed the surgery said no pitcher has ever come back from rotator cuff surgery within one year. Pedro will be making this start, 2 days shy of the 11 month anniversary of the surgery. Pedro is entering uncharted territory. That means for us Mets fans and those who are just interested, we really have no clue what to expect. The only things that are certain are, Pedro will not be throwing mid to upper 90's and more importantly he will have a great impact on this team in the dugout.Before...

Pedro, Chavez Look Good in Rehab Start [David Stefanini]
2007-08-21 18:54:00
Pedro Martinez finally had a rehab start to be pleased with. He allowed 2 unearned runs over 5 innings. His fastball topped out at 89 mph, which is an improvement from his previous starts. After the game Pedro talked about his pitches, "I was very pleased with the way my sinker was working and also the curveball. It was very steady."This was by far Pedro's best outing since his injury. His sinker and curveball were working very well, but I feel he is still having trouble locating his fastball and changeup. Expect Pedro to make another start for St. Lucie's within a week. If you are optimistic, Pedro could return by the first week of September. If you are a realist, Pedro will likely rejoin the Mets in the middle of September.Endy Chavez, who is also working his way back from an injury looked very good as well. Chavez went 3-4 and scored a run. He didn't have his usual explosive speed, but he will get that as time moves on. He still needs to get his confidence. Once he is healthy, ...

As if a .600 plus baseball club could really use a hall of fame pitcher, but the New York Mets will soon welcome back to their rotation one of the best pitchers in the game.Pedro Martinez threw off the mound yesterday. Jim Baumbach of Newsday has more:Not long after Pedro Martinez took the most important step to date in his rehab, throwing off a mound, the Mets righthander adamantly insisted he will make it back this summer.Eight months to the day of his rotator cuff surgery, Martinez threw 38 pitches off a mound for the first time and was his usual jovial self afterward, smiling as he spoke with a group of reporters for more than 10 minutes. Martinez admitted he was a little hesitant when he first got on the mound, but insisted everything felt great as he threw. Still, the real test won't come until he finally gets into a game, which won't be for a while.http://img68.imageshack.u-s/my.php?image=amerlegendslogo5-wj.gif

For years, people have decided that the best way to make their statements, however right or wrong, was their hairstyle.
