I woke up to a ton of small transactions this morning, so let's lead with them. In MLBTR-friendly transactions, the A's designated Lenny DiNardo and Kevin Melillo for assignment. The team made a bevy of other moves, though, recalling Travis Buck, Brad Ziegler, and Carlos Gonzalez, placing Joey Devine, Mike Sweeney, and Ryan Sweeney on the 15-day DL, and activating Kiko Calero and Eric Chavez from the DL. Brandon Medders, recently DFA by the Diamondbacks, has cleared waivers and has been assigned to AAA. Brayan Pena, recently DFA by the Braves, has been claimed by the Royals. Rangers RHP Franklyn German has refused an assignment to AAA, and will hit the free agent market. The Reds traded RHP Jim Brower to the Cubs for cash considerations. Hagen says that Omar Minaya is rumored to be interested in Kevin Millar, Jason Bay and Xavier Nady.  Hagen must share a source with Dan Graziano, who mentions the same trio.  Might Aaron Heilman be used as bait? According to the minor league deal that Jeff Weaver signed with the Brewers, if he was not called up by this Sunday he could ask for his release. The Brewers and Weaver's agent, Scott Boras, have agreed to extend that deadline to June 15. Sean McAdam wonders if Manny Ramirez's current slump will affect the team's decision to exercise his $20MM option for 2009. Manny sounded rather confident last month that the team would pick it up. Today's edition of Trendspotting focuses on a couple of guys who are struggling massively so far this season. I'd like to look at the situations faced by Cleveland DH Travis Hafner and Tampa Bay 1B Carlos Pena.Travis Hafner: His situation is becoming one of baseball's great mysteries. He's been struggling now for over a year - despite his hot streaks, he finished last year with only 24 HR. Granted, he did reach triple-digit RBI, but his batting average was only .266, well off his career pace of .300 or so. Cleveland dropped him in the lineup and they hope that will jump-start their big hitter. He hasn't been helped by the struggles of the rest of the offense, but technically he should be a catalyst rather than the one relying on them. He'll still get the at-bats in Cleveland, but soon it's going to be time to question whether he's worth the daily start if he doesn't turn things around. What a waste of a good pena coloda. At least it turned into a funny story.It was the first warm day of the year. My friend and I decided to make some non-alcoholic pena colodas. I don't drink and I don't support it.My friend made the drinks and then he asked me to put the ice away. I took my drink and the ice to the garage and I set down my drink on the top of the freezer. When I opened up the freezer, pena coloda went everywhere.It's not a good idea to put things directly on top of the door part of the freezer. That part apparently moves. Anyway, I spilled my drink everywhere.Later that night, I went home, took off my jeans, and through them into the dirty clothes basket. The next morning I woke up to a, "What the ---- is this?" Let's take a look at what the rumor-guru has to say: Rosenthal notes that the Dodgers will go with Blake DeWitt at third base who has never played a game above AA. This comes after the Dodgers failed to acquire either the Astros' Mark Loretta, who was unavailable and the Royals' Esteban German, who was too expensive. The Royals were asking for the Dodgers' third best prospect, shortstop Chin-Lung Hu. He indicates that the Padres and the Rays are pursuing Matt Murton but the Cubs are holding out for a top pitching prospect in return, knowing Murton will be a starter on another club. Rosenthal quotes one GM as saying that the price "is way too high as of now". As many as five teams have shown interest in Murton. No sooner do I publicly avow that I do not want to talk about Elijah Dukes ever again than Wily Mo Pena gets a significant obliquie strain than will keep him out of action for 6-8 weeks.  This is too bad for Wily Mo as he was about to be given a full-time job from the get-go.  Dreams of 30+ HRs just went out the window. Now Elijah Dukes will get a chance to prove the 10 HRs he hit last season are more indicative of his baseball skills than the .190 AVG he showed in 190 ABs.  He did have a .318 OBP and that is why I lean towards the 10 HRs side. If only my visceral reaction to his personal behavior translated into a fantasy morals clause. * The Angels announced that their ace, John Lackey, will miss the 1st month of the season with a strained triceps.  This means Ervin Santana is sure to get a last chance to prove 2007 was a fluke. MLB.com's Bill Chastain reports Tampa Bay Rays 1B Carlos Pena enjoys hitting in the third spot in the order behind speedy OF Carl Crawford and ahead of up-and-coming OF B.J. Upton. "If I hit one in the gap, he's [Crawford] going to score," said Pena. "It makes you confident." He also cited Upton's plate discipline and eye as reasons pitchers will likely have to try to pitch to him. Pena had tremendous success last year batting ahead of Upton, hitting .333 with 18 home runs and 40 RBIs in 36 games.
