From People Power to Pedal Power
2008-06-10 06:36:00 There has been a lot of talk about people boycotting the petrol pumps - you can see this being circulated via email. Only snag is how long can people sustain this? So it’s time for pedal power! Hey, if Paris can do it, why not KL, Penang, Ipoh, Johor Bharu, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu? It ...

The End of an Era
2008-03-31 18:01:00 From one of Sun.Star Daily’s past issues: Thursday, March 27, 2008 Editorial: Winding down of an era THAT TV footage showing former president Fidel V. Ramos dedicating a song to former president Cory Aquino, who is fighting colon cancer, shows how far an era has receded. While Edsa 1 of 1986 was primarily an undertaking of an entire people, ...

The Bane of the Anti-Arroyo Movement
2008-03-04 23:14:00 Last week, Will of the blog Writer’s Block asked me if the people in Cebu are pro-GMA 100%. I simply answered no. I said that many here believe that the president is guilty of corruption. Likewise, many actually believe Lozada’s claim of irregularities in the NBN deal. As to why not many are joining the ...

People power can save environment
2008-03-04 02:35:00 With 17,000 islands and a biodiversity second only to Brazil, Indonesia stands to lose a great deal from environmental degradation and the impacts of global warming. Experts agree Indonesia is facing an environmental crisis which is threatening to undermine the social and economic fabric of this great nation. But there is arguably insufficient concern among ordinary Indonesians who are all too ignorant about the scale of the problem. And if they do understand the gravity of the situation, they don't know what to do about it. Air pollution is one of the country's most severe environmental problems and a serious health issue. Jakarta is the world's eighth most polluted city. The number of cars on Indonesia's roads has doubled in the past decade. Forest fires also contribute to Indonesia's air pollution. Much more has to be done to stop illegal logging and to educate farmers about the damage caused by slashing and burning. Indonesia's water quality is deteriorating....

2008-03-01 03:33:00 People Power is a familiar term when you want to make your voices known and fight the governing bodies of your country. It is a famous term in the Philippines. But in this case, the cause is for something else; fighting global warming. This time, this takes place in Switzerland. You may say that it ...

EDSA People Power: Celebrating 22 Years of Deception
2008-02-25 15:10:00 I guess majority of people who reads this were not yet born or were just too young to be aware of what’s happening in politics or perhaps, since my readers are mostly from the US, they’re too busy to care about what’s happening in this third-world country called the Philippines. I should also acknowledge the ...

EDSA People Power: Forgetting and Remembering
2008-02-07 19:33:00 February 25 marks the anniversary of People Power. Remembering EDSA II
2008-01-27 13:47:00 I have nothing much to remember. I was a first year high school student in Don Bosco Technological College Cebu, a school run by Catholic priests, when the massive protests that toppled Joseph Estrada from power came about. During the peak of the mass actions in the middle of January 2001, we were all bused to ...

How to mount another People Power
2007-12-07 02:29:00 A lot of people have been trying for years to evict President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo from Malacañang with all sorts of campaigns from the laughable Starbuck's silent protest to the recent and similarly idiotic Manila Peninsula caper instigated by Senator Antonio Trillanes IV.As an ad guy, my job is to influence a great number of people to buy a product through ads. And I'd like to think I've had a good measure of success in this for I have yet to see a brand I've handled go pffftt. (Ehem, ehem, ehem.)Now, I would want to share my "expertise" on how to move masses of people into action as I'm starting to pity all these people trying to oust President Arroyo. There are only three things to consider when you're trying to influence people en masse.First, STRATEGY. In the world of advertising, this is the blueprint. This is where everything takes a leap from. Who is the target market? What message should be communicated to the traget market? For example, Apple is all about cutting...

Beware those who want to hijack Malaysia?s People Power movement
2007-11-17 06:43:00 In a parting shot, Thierry Rommel, the European ambassador who left his post on Tuesday, castigated the Malaysian government for its deplorable human rights record and the “discriminatory” New Economic Policy (NEP). News reports quoted Rommel as saying the executive in Malaysia is “all-powerful and not accountable” while the judiciary remains beholden to the executive because ...

Do not expect too much of the end of the (Arroyo) regime
2007-10-27 17:59:00 I don?t think it would be an exaggeration to say that many are outraged by the pardon of the disgraced former president Estrada by President Arroyo. For veterans and sympathizers of Edsa2 ? particularly those from the middle classes ? the recent action of the present administration is an unpardonable act that followed a long chain ...

People power: Our growing Crohn's community
2007-08-23 18:49:00 I'm proud of what is happening here in the digestive health community at Revolution Health. I can' t believe it's been a year since I began my Gastro Girl mission and made a commitment to helping others living with a digestive disease or condition, caring for, love or simply know someone who is coping with one.. I started Gastro Girl as a way to raise awareness and get people talking after I realized just how many people are suffering in silence, afraid to talk about their severe, unpleasant and embarrassing symptoms--like gas, abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and constipation. I never realized that some people have stopped living the lives they want and in extreme cases have contemplated suicide because their suffering is unbearable. But with the digestive health resources here at Revolution Health, the digestive health community is blossoming. I want to share some of the highlights with you--and commend the people who have so openly and generously shared t...

2007-04-10 03:23:00 The Catholic Bishops in Zimbabwe had a letter read out in all churches last week condemning the oppression of the Mugabe regieme. Yoople, A Search Experiment in People Power - Room
2007-02-21 01:09:01 Yoople, A Search Experiment in People Power - Room for Abuse? (Page 4 of 4 )Danny Sullivan correctly points out that any site trying to move themselves to the top of the results by brute force manipulation must have earned at least some basic ranking in Yahoo, or else there isn't anything to drag and drop. Even there, it takes a lot of work. Using a search term other than "pizza," I tried to move one particular result one place up the rankings. Moving it up one rank 13 times by performing the drag and drop and then reloading the search didn't do it - and the result I was trying to get past had only been moved six times. Hardly any of the other results on the first page had been moved at all (then again, the search was for a highly competitive term). This doesn't mean the system can't be abused, however. Another reviewer of Yoople commented that there's nothing in place to verify that the results are being moved by humans. Doing something to make visitors verify that they'...
Yoople, A Search Experiment in People Power - Movi
2007-02-21 01:09:01 Yoople, A Search Experiment in People Power - Moving Stuff Around (Page 3 of 4 )The results for pizza have been moved around a lot; it's very easy. If you check one of the earlier pictures you'll see that there's been a lot of jockeying for position between Papa John's, Domino's, and Pizza Hut. But since I'm rather annoyed that Pizzeria Uno didn't even turn up in the first 30 results (which I could only get to by clicking an arrow at the bottom of the page), I'm going to have a little fun. Look at the second entry. It shows up as the twelfth item in Yahoo's results for pizza, but here I've been able to bump it up to number two! It's worth noting that it took me several moves to get it there; when I tried to move the result that was in the thirtieth position up to number two, Yoople wouldn't let me. When I performed the pizza search again after engaging in my manipulations, Little Caesars once again showed up in position 12. Incidentally, you can also m...
