Yesterday, Glenn linked a comment James Taranto made in his Best of the Web column for the on-line edition of the Wall Street Journal: Have you noticed a change in the economic news over the past year or so? It’s a deliberately ambiguous question: The actual news has gotten worse, but the coverage of it has ...

Gastric Bypass Is Easy Weight Loss: Changing Public Perception
2008-12-21 08:07:00
Gastric Bypass Is Easy Weight Loss: Changing Public Perception was written by Kaye Bailey from livingafterwls.comIt?s no secret the public at large perceives gastric bypass to be the lazy person?s cure for obesity. In fact some are so indignant about this medical procedure they passionately take a soapbox and criticize the surgery which will be performed on nearly 500,000 Americans this year.Uncensored criticism is one of the most painful things a recovering morbidly obese person faces when they have WLS. Unlike other illnesses obesity is seen to be self-inflicted which allows others to forsake their manners to openly diagnose and treat the fat person. Any obese person will cite an incident where they?ve been told "Eat less, exercise more." We know the slogan and for most dieters the slogan isn?t working very well.Losing weight is never easy. NEVER. Not with Jenny Craig. Not with Weight Watchers or Low-Carb or diet-du-jour. Losing weight is not easy even with weight loss surgery. Wh...

Probabilistic Models of the Brain: Perception and Neural Function
2008-05-28 15:45:00
DescriptionProbabilistic Models of the Brain: Perception and Neural Function (Neural Information Processing) Publisher: The MIT PressNumber Of Pages: 334Publication Date: 2002-02-15Sales Rank: 319222ISBN / ASIN: 0262182246EAN: 9780262182249Binding: HardcoverManufacturer: The MIT PressStudio: The MIT PressNeurophysiological, neuroanatomical, and brain imaging studies have helped to shed light on how the brain transforms raw sensory information into a form that is useful for goal-directed behavior. A fundamental question that is seldom addressed by these studies, however, is why the brain uses the types of representations it does and what evolutionary advantage, if any, these representations confer. It is difficult to address such questions directly via animal experiments. A promising alternative is to use probabilistic principles such as maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference to derive models of brain function. This book surveys some of the current probabilistic approaches to model...

more blink- visual perception- faster than a speeding bullet
2008-05-24 00:13:00
Our minds process visual information at a rapid rate, which makes it tough for designers who need to create both instant impact and depth. However, if people get the chance to click their mouse and move away because their perception tells them there's no point to going deeper, it means impact is everything. Recent research conducted by the University of Vienna shows just how fast people process visual information. Its study focused on art and asked subjects to compare similarities and differences in various pieces. Researchers found that subjects could register content in less than 1/100th of a second. Within 1/20th of a second subjects had already started to interpret style. All this happening before recognition of the whole object. It shows that art directors and designers have less time than we originally thought to capture attention and stop people from clicking away with their remote button or mouse. Posted by Ed Cotton
What is Reverence? | the holy perception to life
2008-05-21 17:21:00
Reverence is engaging in a form and depth of contact with Life that is well beyond the shell of form and into essence. Reverence is contact with the essence of each thing and person ... It is contact with the interior of its beingness.Even if you cannot sense the interior, it is enough to know that the form, the shell, is merely an outer layer, and that underneath it the true power and essence of who a person is, or what a thing is, is present. That is what honored in reverence.Reverence is an attitude of honoring life.Whether a person is reverent depends essentially upon whether he or she accepts the principle of the sacredness of Life, any way that he or she defines sacred. Reverence is also simply the experience of accepting that all Life is, in and of itself of value.Reverence is not respect. Respect is judgment. It is a response to the perception of qualities that we ourselves admire, or have been taught to admire. Qualities that are admired by the people of one culture may not...

How Thinking Distorts Perception
2008-05-07 16:37:00
Man: Do we see things accurately? Emotion biases perception. It magnifies some things and minimizes others. Even if I am in the moment, I believe there is a background of stored or recorded emotion and emotion based conclusions that will influence what I see.Rick: Perception, when we are calm enough to perceive it, is always pure, but most people do not remain calm/centered upon perceiving something. There is all but no gap between perception and taking to thought about what they just observed.Perception is of the moment, but taking to thought is where we abandon the present moment because as we dwell on thought about the moment that just happened we stay in the past and are lost to the next present moment where informative Reality lives. Here, now caught up in the past, we are cut off from new perception and/or intuition that might otherwise have informed us if we had a need to know and had not looked to inferior/flawed mental thought, to the now past for that information. This is w...

Break the parameters of normal perception
2008-05-04 13:13:00
How often have you said, "I only believe what I see," and really meant it? What do you imagine it would feel like to free yourself from encumbering thoughts and habit patterns?  Are you ready to taste a different reality?  Is your mind prepared for all the stimulation?Your mind can detect thought patterns that escaped your awareness before.   You can evolve to see energy as it flows in the universe, how balls of energy form transparent beings of light around you.  Energy fields frame these geometric forms.  Strings seem to link their halos to infinity. Do you see humans as they really are, beneath their skin? Let's say you detect a break in the continuity of time.  Learn what it means to interrupt your perceived flow of continuity.  Allow yourself to clarify your intent during inner silence.  You will observe and absorb something specific that defies explanation in familiar terms.&nb...

Colour Perception
2008-04-28 14:49:00
The human brain is a strange and wonderful thing. It's ability to perceive colour is by no means straight forward. For instance, take the colour red; it has a tendency to come forward so that a red object looks comparatively closer to the viewer than it actually is. Some people have put forward the suggestion that this is because the earth's atmosphere is blue and that objects far away will have a blue cast to them as the light from them passes through more and more blue atmosphere and that this produces the psychological effect of bringing red objects closer.Sounds reasonable doesn't it. But at night, green objects look closer and red looks less 'forward'. Try seeing if you can notice this effect with traffic lights, comparing daytime to nighttime. Most people think of their eyes as the organ that sees the world around us. This is not strictly true as the real visual processing is done with our brains; if the central processing unit (CPU or microprocessor) is the computer equiva...

The 15 Secret Abilities of Qigong & Extra Sensory Perception (ESP)
2008-04-27 07:00:00
When one thinks of Chi Power Training or Qigong, the concept of developing Extra Sensory Perception or ESP becomes a very real possibility. How does a physical exercise like Chi Power Training or Qigong relate to the development of Psychic abilities or ESP? The one key factor that one must realize is that physical “Internal” training can have a direct result on mental capabilities as it relates to ESP. The reason is that when you combine certain physical exercises with mental exercises, you create a way to tap into the inner resources of the Mind, Body connection. Many have searched far and wide to learn these supposed secret abilities. These “secrets” are really returning the body back to the way it was when we were younger and had perception. As we get older, we come to dismiss the abilities we had as children. The key to doing this is learning how to sensitize the body after it has been desensitized after all the years of growing older and allowing your m...

CHOOSE Your Perception
2008-04-11 04:12:00
Life isn?t in black and white. You choose how to color what you see and do. Your life is as colorful as YOU allow it to be. Just like a child brings a coloring book page to life with crayons, your thoughts color your world. I?ve talked about how we can create new habits to replace those that aren?t serving you in a positive way. You can break habits of letting other people program how you view your life and then create a habit of having a more positive perception. You can create the good habit of coloring your world with bright hues!Did you ever adjust the color of a TV set? You turn the dial one way and the colors get brighter and more vibrant. Go the other direction and it gets washed out or not there. That?s what perception does to you thoughts! YOU control the dials. Perception allows you to choose your reality; to color it positive or negative. For example: * You can CHOOSE to see a glass half empty or CHOOSE to see it half full. Which sounds better? You know the answer, yet ma...

Gas price perception
2008-03-06 19:11:00
With gas prices hitting record $106 a barrel there are a lot of discussions regarding gasoline prices. Usually I hear two complaints. One comes from American public, crying that the gas is about to hit $4 per gallon. Opposing opinion comes from members of the European community, letting clueless Americans know that they’ve been paying double that for years. While both parties have a point, they fail to notice the following. While it costs double to fill up the car on the European continent, average car is much more fuel efficient compared to their American rivals. They drive 1.0 liter econoboxes and 2.0 liter SUV’s. Only in Europe you will see BMW 520 and Mercedes E200. Americans, known to desire everything oversized, will drive 5.8 liter SUV to pick up a cup of Starbucks, in process burning more gas than some Europeans burn in a day of driving. I wouldn’t be surprised if the overall gas spending per mile driven is higher is USA despite lower gas prices. I don&rsqu...

Perception vs. Reality
2008-02-11 07:45:00
During this last trip, the crew was talking about the difference between how we perceive people judging by their actions at work and how they probably really are at home. For example, they said that they view me as a feminine, girly-girl who takes pride in my appearance. They believe that my house is always organized and immaculate without a thing out of place. Hah! If only they knew that I rarely wear make-up during the week and the most that I primp is to pull my hair back into a pony tail. I’m the Mommy who’s always sitting on the sidewalk waiting for Girlie Girl after school while the other Moms stand on the side. And although I prefer a clean house, it’s not always on my to-do list. So what about you? Do your co-workers/friends see you for who you really are?

This comes on the heels of Bush's new budget which as we would assume, gives little to environmental issues. One of the things we learn as political junkie bloggers is that the media, even more so than we had thought, really does pick and choose what to report on, ending up favoring or disfavoring particular candidates. The American Street weighs in on the subject. I do tend to agree that a lot of it is a response to the far Right's allegation of liberality, but I too find it no excuse. As one wh...
