TN Dems Blame Reps & Fox network over Obama perceptions
2008-06-17 12:46:00
Dawn Teo:Fred Hobbs set off a flurry of sound-bites and interest when he was asked why Representative Lincoln Davis was delaying his endorsement of Senator Barack Obama as the party's nominee for President. Clearly part of the problem is that they just plain haven't gotten to know Senator Obama in Tennessee yet, but the fact is, they handed the extremists among their opponents something to run with in a week when most of the truly bad coverage was about McCain (unless you count the backlash against Megyn and Malkin and the "baby mama" debacle, but they aren't running for office.) Going into the weekend the commentators on the right were anxious for any story to chase the Supreme Court Gitmo decision -- and the crisis of faith it represented -- off the headlines, and Hobbs played Lincoln Davis right into their hands. The Tennessee Democratic Party issued a statement on Friday that the Tennessee Democratic Party is united behind Obama. On Monday, they published the statement on the...

Rape, Abuse, Perceptions, & Mothers
2008-04-25 06:38:00
RAPE IS RAPEToday I am blogging lite.  I’ve had a very strange day, escorting my god-daughter around town, taking her to lunch at a local eatery (non chain), then to her consult with Leroy as to her ‘make-over’.  We were at the shop of one of my best friends, when a COLLECT call from her confessed pedophile father rang through on her cell.  Knowing what I do of the situation, I told her not to answer, call her mother, and have her contact the DA.  I watched a 14 year old girl who was having a fun day go ...

Korean Perceptions of the U.S. Military
2008-04-22 02:50:00
GI Korea at ROK Drop has posted a detailed link-heavy response with pictures to a four-part series in the Stars and Stripes about how Koreans view the U.S. military. The views in the article are predictable, but GI Korea’s responses are worth the read, pointing out details I was previously unaware of. Oh, and the Stars and Stripes article has a quote from the manager of Gecko’s saying that English teachers are now the bad guys in the bar, and the U.S. soldiers are the good guys.

Of truth and perceptions........
2008-04-07 11:50:00
You might have heard it said at one time or another that there is no such thing as truth, only what we believe is the truth. You can see that again and again whenever a number of people witness a scene and every one of them has a different version of what happened. We all place our "filters" and prejudices over what we see and hear, where we "pre-judge" what we see or hear based on our beliefs.  And through our filters, we "see" things that probably aren't there at all.  And we completely miss things that are ridiculously obvious to others. The same is true of fear...Most times the things we avoid, whether they're duties, actions, people, situations... doesn't matter what they are - those things, most often, are not scary.  Those things can't hurt us.  Nothing about the things that send us into panic is usually dangerous.Yet they make people quake with fear anyway.Because of skewed views.Because of Faulty perceptions.Coloured by our personal and societal...

An International Study on the Perceptions of Newspaper Journalists on Value
2008-02-22 17:11:00
by Dr. Prem Lal Joshi An online international survey of Newspaper journalists, on the topic of Value-based journalism (VBJ) reveals that they pride themselves for adhering to "truth and accuracy" and "verification of facts". These are among the top core values of reporting news and views. More than 90% of respondents stated this, a survey I conducted. In the values hierarchy, 89.6% of them also stated that they adhere to the value of " public interest" . "Objectivity" and "independence" were rated fourth equally. Objectivity is considered a debatable point in journalism. Respondents from all the five continents similarly rated transparency, completeness, accountability, compassion and perseverance, the survey reported. "Avoiding violation of others privacy", "loyalty," and "aggressiveness" received lower ranking in the value hierarchy for most of the contin...

Heads of state and international perceptions
2008-02-16 17:57:00
Yesterday, David gave the Snark Of The Day award to Vladimir Putin… and justifiably so, for his comment on Hillary Clinton: “At a minimum, a head of state should have a head.” Humor, of course, has to have a grain of truth at the center of it, else, it isn’t funny, and in laughing, we recognize that truth. In our acknowledgment of that truth, however, let’s not lose sight of the fact that Putin is hardly alone in the world, in his perception of Hillary Clinton as a brainless idiot driven by pure avarice. And how is it that Mr. Putin who is arguably more socialist than any of America’s offerings can be so down on Mrs. Clinton, who was arguably among the most socialist of any of the American offerings? Perhaps there’s something of truht that his objection to the woman is rooted in? Mr. Putin’s statement reveals a hostility that is formidable. A look round about suggests it is also hardly singular. His perception of Mrs. Clinton, is qu...

It may be due to perceptions of system: Law Society head - Singapore NEW LAW SOCIETY PRESIDENT MICHAEL HWANG also addressed issues such as continuing legal education and changes in criminal procedures. — ST PHOTOS: NG SOR LUAN   LAWYERS shun criminal work probably because of the perception that the justice system is weighted against them, the new Law Society president said. In his maiden speech, Senior Counsel Michael Hwang addressed issues such as continuing legal education and changes in criminal procedure. Much of his speech focused on the report by a committee, headed by Justice V. K. Rajah, which released its recommendations recently on how to develop Singapore’s legal services. Among the topics the report touched on was the shortage of criminal and civil litigation lawyers. Mr Hwang noted that in the report, it was observed that young lawyers are not attracted to criminal work because this area of practice is not financially rewarding. This is not necessarily true...

Trusting Perceptions and Higher Communication
2007-12-26 17:21:00
One of the most fundamental aspect of any growth or spiritual path is the trust in your own perception. There is no question it is incomplete; so long as you have a body, you will not see even a miniscule fraction of the totality and even your Self. But it is still your perception. It is the basis for growth, for if you rely on someone else?s eyes, you are not living your own life, discovering your own Truth, but are being a guinea pig for other?s experiments with Truth.

Pigeons, People & Perceptions
2007-11-16 18:09:00
by Mickey Z. New York City Councilman Simcha Felder is sick and tired of some Big Apple residents "doing whatever they do all over the city without anyone trying to stop it." Is he talking about trigger-happy cops, double parked cab drivers, omnipresent terror suspects, loud cell phone users, or maybe corporate lawyers? Nope. Felder has his legislative eye on Columba livia, a.k.a. Rock Pigeon (The bird formerly known as Rock Dove). According to BirdWeb.com, the Rock Pigeon is "originally from Europe, Northern Africa, and India" but was "introduced it to North America in the 1600s." Since then, of course, "numbers have increased significantly as more and more of our country is urbanized." To combat the seemingly urgent problem of urbanized pigeon droppings, the intrepid Councilman Felder plans to introduce legislation banning the feeding of Columba livia. To defy this ban would be to risk a $1,000 fine. (Interestingly, the Rock Pigeon is d...

In August I posted the news and success of Shannon Frodge's Master's study in which Hodges' model was used as a theoretical framework.I've copied the abstract, Shannon's reference to Hodges' model and her research questions below. There are some 55 pages, 9,700 words in total, if you want to the read the discussion and conclusion well according to Shannon the text is available on ProQuest.Every so often I'll bring up the matter of nurse, health and social care recruitment on W2TQ: it really is going to be critical. I do not work in HR - recruitment, but being interested in public (mental) health I am very conscious of demographic trends and be(d)sides standards of care matter too...Thanks Shannon for the copy, your specific focus on this issue and for recognising and using Hodges' model. How Perceptions of Asian Women Have Changed Dramatically
2007-10-08 16:43:00
Women who are raised in any of the several countries on the continent of Asia are known to be brought up learning how to be submissive and exceptionally pleasing to the men in their lives, especially their husbands. For many years, Asian women have suffered through a lifetime of being categorized as second class citizens, being given barely any personal rights, including the right to think for themselves. Based on that type of lifestyle, which can be very degrading and traumatic, many Asian women try to emigrate to other countries in search of a better life. They offer themselves as wives for what can many times turn out to be a worse existence than before they left.‘But the times, they are a changin’. Fortunately, many modern Asian women, especially Asian American women, attend school and college and go on to become successful business people. They become doctors, lawyers and even politicians. The modern Asian women have evolved into wives and mothers who no longer have to bow ...

Well Shannon's study is now successfully completed and I've some reading to do. The few remaining supporters of the invasion and occupation of Iraq are not only talking about mythological improvements in Iraq but of mythological changes in perception. Last week we had Lieberman camp "Democrats" Michael O?Hanlon and Kenneth Pollack told us how things are improving in Iraq and that we can still "win". Willaim Kristol tells us public opinion has turned based on the column by uber hawks O'Hanlon and Pollack. All three have been consistently wrong about all things Iraq from the beginning but still think we should listen to their "wisdom". Of course they fail to mention that Iraq is no closer to a political solution than it was three years ago and in fact the country is falling apart. Former war supporter Michael Ignatieff acknowledges that in the lead up to the invasion those who ?truly showed good judgment on Iraq? might have had no more information than those who got it wrong, but did not make the mistake of confusing ?wishes for reality.? All these years later i...

June Poll - Perceptions of the Eucharist in the OC/IC Community
2007-07-24 12:10:00
28 visitors participated in the most recent poll that asked about your Eucharistic theology. Before I play with the results, here is the breakdown:68% (19 votes) agreed that the elements become the ?real presence? of Christ at the consecration.25% (7 votes) of those participating believe in transubstantiation.7% (2 votes) said that the Eucharist is merely a potent symbol of our Christian identity. In this poll I am more aware than previously of the question of how many participants were OC/IC folk vs. readers from other traditions. Assume for the purpose of this reflection that all 28 participants were OC/IC folk the numbers are rather interesting. For example, that there is a small percentage of our community that is self identified as ?independent sacramental? but simultaneously rejects a concept most sacramentalists view as central to the idea of the Eucharist; that is the mystery of Christ?s real presence (never mind the mechanics of that for a moment). What is more the number of...

2007-06-18 14:06:00
Author: Eric Subject: Bill May Improve Perceptions of AmericaPosted: Mon Jun 18, 2007 8:06 am (GMT -4) Bill May Improve Perceptions of America USA (MNN) -- In late May, a group from World Hope International attended a briefing on the Global Service Fellowship Program bill. The briefing came just after it was introduced in the Senate. Debbie Hoover, World Hope International's Hope Corps director; Rachel Drevlov, Hope Corp's assistant; and Amber Hirschy, a Hope Corps volunteer, attended. Hoover was a part of the Brookings Institute work group that proposed the bill. After the briefing, she was later able to share her volunteer experiences in congressional meetings. The proposed bill would distribute $50-million to 10,000 Americans volunteering overseas each year. Each volunteer, registered through a qulaified NGO, faith-based organization, or university service learning program, would receive an average of $5,000 for their trip. Trips would be between one month an...

Depression Related to Inaccurate Perceptions of Peer Relations
2006-11-01 03:13:00
Thanks to PsychCentral.com, I found facinating article from the Los Angeles Times. A recent study has found that depression is related more to misperceptions of peer interactions, especially during puberty. Truth sometimes hurts. But for children closing in on adolescence, a firm grasp on the truth about one's standing with classmates and peers can be healthy, even when it does hurt a bit. A new study has found that children who can accurately assess how much ? or little ? their peers like them are less likely to develop symptoms of depression, including sadness and difficulties concentrating or sleeping. By comparison, children with unrealistically rosy or unfoundedly gloomy views of their standing appear more likely to be headed toward depression. Many psychologists have speculated that the smiling child who believes she is the glowing sun in her classmates' universe will be protected from depression by that belief. They also surmised that the child who holds a negative view ...
Perceptions Have More to Do With Depression and Happiness
2006-08-05 19:06:00
From the outstanding site of Anxiety Insights, there is a summary of a recent research study that produces results questioning conventional wisdom about income, poverty and depression. None of the socio-economic indicators studied was found to be significantly associated with an episode of common mental disorder at follow-up, after baseline psychiatric illness was taken into account. The analysis of separate diagnostic categories showed that subjective financial difficulties at baseline were independently associated with depression at follow-up in both groups. In other words, it's the subjective experience of stress rather than the experience of poverty that predicts a higher rate of depression. That is consistent with my own clinical and life experiences. I teach my clients that we control our reactions to whatever happens to us. While, we also have a lot of input on our successes, mainly by the persistence and willingness to make adjustments and keep going, but there are othe...
