News: Like a Perfect Storm, the Global Food Crisis Now Heads For Canada, US
2008-04-27 22:26:00 Since several months, I have been reporting on the food crisis sparking hunger and riots in different parts of the globe.Like in a perfect storm, different factors contributed to a disaster scenario: increased fuel prices, an artificial push for biofuel crops, adverse weather phenomena, changing food habits, increased demand and financial speculation on the futures markets (see this summary)As expected, the storm first hit the poorest countries, where food constitutes easily 40% of a family's budget. But now the bad weather has reached closer to home: the US and Canada. While the first news articles only started to appear one or two days ago, and the symptoms are still scattered and early to detect, it does ring an alarm bell. An overview of what I have picked up so far:In the US, rationing of some food commodities seems to be just around the corner:- At the Costco in San Francisco, rice is all the rage. Not long after the 10 a.m. opening on Apr. 24, the warehouse was well on its wa...

Economic Update. A Perfect Storm?
2008-04-06 06:33:00 China?s economy may have been spared the worst of the sub-prime write-downs (though the Chinese banking and political system has some interesting experience in the are of non-performing loans!), but the economic situation is not without challenges. "The Perfect Storm"? The Turnaround of the San Francisco Bay Area Office Ma
2008-03-10 11:07:00 For years, Wall Street viewed the San Francisco office market as stable but mature. It no longer was considered a headquarters market, but its core markets-including technology and medical research-its strong branch market, and its attractiveness continued to draw a robust workforce. Wall Street also pegged office market rents in the San Francisco Bay Area to those in New York. Historically, Bay Area rental rents on average have been about 50% of New York rents. In 2007, New York Class A office rents hit $200 per square foot. With the Bay Area's office market average rental rates as low as $28 per square foot in 2005, the Bay Area looked like a real bargain. As a result, buyers flooded the Bay Area, buying and selling some buildings two or three times in a couple of years, with each buyer anticipating higher and higher rental rates. What Wall Street did not consider were the tenants who will be entering the market in the next couple of years and their options for keeping rental...
The Perfect Storm
2008-03-08 13:31:00 They are calling it the storm of the century, epic proportions of snowfall in a matter of 36 hours. It started right as forecasters called it, 10:00am. and continued heavy probably 4 inches or more by 4:30pm. And it kept coming. We could have gone to the grocery store, stocked up on water, juice, milk and propane. But we didn't. We could have just hunkered down in our living room, popped in some dvd's, prepared some popcorn and snuggled under some blankets ignoring the accumulating powder outside the windows. But we didn't. We could have packed some bags, loaded up the family truckster (van) and fled, south to warmer climes. But we didn't.So just what did I do to weather the blizzard of ought eight? Well, we did pack some bags, I put on my favorite Hawaiian Shirt and sandals (it's my passive aggressive way of flipping the bird at the storm), loaded up the family truckster (van) and drove NORTH!!! Into the eye of the...

Perfect storm for Clinton?
2008-03-05 01:07:00 One can get a good sense of the race by monitoring the expectations game. In recent days, Team-Clinton has suggested that Obama is in trouble if he loses any one of today's primaries, by which they mean, of course, "We expect to lose, but want to keep our options open." Today, however, the Obama camp is saying that Hillary has to get double-digit wins in order to justify her campaign from here forward, suggesting that Obama's pollsters are predicting a late surge for Hillary: It is clear that narrow popular vote wins in Texas and Ohio will do very little to improve their nearly impossible path to the nomination. If they do not win Texas and Ohio by healthy double digit margins – and they led by healthy double digit margins as recently as two weeks ago - they will be facing almost impossible odds to reverse the delegate math. Well, Hillary will never have a better chance to do something than today. The Rezco and NAFTA scandals combined with good demographics for Clinton ("w...

News: The Perfect Storm: A Global Food Crisis.
2008-02-25 00:31:00 The Perfect Storm. The world is heading towards a global food crisis. A number of factors contribute to what could be described as 'A Perfect Storm':The price of fuel increased dramatically in the past years, thus the cost of food production and transport increased dramatically, pushing the price of food higher than ever before.Last year, for the first time in many years, the world's food production went into a deficit, pushing up the price of the commodities, based on a supply and demand dynamic, even higher.Fast growing economies like China pulls people away from rural areas, causing massive urban expansion. A double spin: a smaller agricultural work force and a loss of farm land. China lost an average of 1.23 million hectares of farmland annually in the past years and is now looking for foreign farms because the nation can't feed its 1.3 billion people. The increased food prices hit the most vulnerable countries the hardest: where people used to survive on the 'edge': Their i...

Utility Computing: A perfect storm gathering that will change your life

THE PERFECT STORM
2008-01-22 22:50:00 The Perfect Storm! What could I possibly mean when I say that the Real Estate industry is about to enter the perfect storm? After 35 + years in the Real Estate industry, I've watched good markets come and go and bad markets come and go. There are always mitigating factors that cause these markets, both good and bad, to make an abrupt change. Those that have spent a couple of decades in the Real Estate industry will tell you this: when a market changes from bad to good or good to bad it almost always happens very quickly, particularly when a market goes from good to bad. I think everyone reading this article will agree - that is what happened this time as well, when the Real Estate market went south on us. So what do I mean when I say that the Real Estate industry is about to enter the perfect storm? Let's look at several factors. The first factor is that a new national election is about to take place with a change of leadership. Marke...

The UK Caught In A Perfect Storm Of Data Breaches. How Long Will It Last?
2007-12-18 04:45:00 The UK government has had to admit to another potentially serious data breach: 3 million learner driver records were lost. There were some smaller incidents between this latest case and the two lost CDs case last month?a veritable peppering of breach after breach. The difference between the smaller cases and these two big ones is, obviously, size. With so many data breach cases seeing the light of day, one wonders if these are attempts to hamstring the new Gordon Brown Administration. Of course, when one considers that these breaches are happening under the auspices of the members of the Brown administration, one has to throw the conspiracy theories out the window and embark upon the incompetence theory. Or does one? The Brown administration has been in place for a little less than six months. When you?ve got a systematic failure of the government, it generally takes longer than six months to develop?and, usually, to diagnose it as on...

Everyone wants to wait for 'the bottom' of the market. Keep in mind that we never know when we're at the bottom until it's too late and changed to an upswing. Personally, I'd rather buy now then wait for everyone else to give me permission to dip my toe in the shallow end. I'll post more statistics and facts in the near future.

The Perfect Storm
Demikian juga ada ungkapan "a ship in a harbor is safe but it's not the aim the ship build for". Hidup memang begitu keras.
Internet: The Perfect Storm is Gathering
2007-10-22 02:36:00 observer.guardian.co.uk: A spectre is haunting the net but, outside of techie circles, nobody seems to be talking about it. The threat it represents to our security and wellbeing may be less dramatic than anything posed by global terrorism, but it has the potential to wreak much more havoc. And so far, nobody has come up with a good idea on how to counter it. It’s called the Storm worm. It first appeared at the beginning of the year, hidden in email attachments with the subject line: ‘230 dead as storm batters Europe’. The PC of anyone who opened the attachment became infected and was secretly enrolled in an ever-growing network of compromised machines called a ‘botnet’. The term ‘bot’ is a derivation of ’software robot’, which is another way of saying that an infected machine effectively becomes the obedient slave of its - illicit - owner. | read more | Share This similar articles:Unlimited Bullshit: Verizon Wireless to pay 1 ...

"Brutal" and "Perfect Storm". Arizona's fake housing-based economy spinnin
2007-10-21 18:25:00 Everyone in Arizona glad they listened to idiot realtors on commission these past couple of years? But what about all the jobs! What about all the immigrants! What about the fact they're not making any more land! What about the 365-days of golf!Sorry. Something called gravity has now taken hold. Buckle up. Arizona housing prices are going to crash right back to pre-speculation inflation-adjusted 2001 levels, and might not even stop there. And the general Arizona housing-based economy will go into depression levels soon. When you build your fake economy on one fake industry full of fakes and fake promises, and then that fake industry blows up, things get real ugly, and that ain't fake. Thanks to Doom for the great (and ugly!) charts. 17 month supply of homes in Phoenix. A Perfect Storm of Evil
2007-10-17 15:44:00 By Jim SimpsonThe Bible talks a great deal about sin, the popular notion being that through God?s vengeance we will burn for an eternity of Hell lest we repent and change. But I believe in the notion that we are punished not so much for our sins, but rather, by our sins. The ugly nature of politics today, and its probable outcome, provides an apt demonstration.Few would argue, at least among those of us who believe there is such a thing as ?morality,? that today?s popular culture is markedly degenerate. We glorify women who dress like tramps and lionize rap stars who treat them as though they were tramps. The magazine racks are obsessed with Brad and Angelina and their latest out-of-wedlock adoption. T.V. news shows showed more interest in Anna Nicole Smith?s sagas than the war in Iraq.Respect for authority has been replaced by demands for ever-increasing public services, while fewer and fewer adults are willing to take responsibility for themselves and their families. "We would not be surprised to see declines in housing prices in many regions of the country ... for the next few quarters."

The Perfect Storm
2007-07-23 17:43:00 The stock market turned down last week, so did the prices of non-investment grade bonds. The “junk” end of the debt market showed falling prices, widening credit spreads and a dramatic decrease in liquidity. (Conditions that often go hand-in-hand, but are troublesome nonetheless.) Subprime mortgage loans are the primary culprit. The only surprise is how little attention the press is paying to these events. Sounds like the perfect storm to me. We could be on the cusp of a full blown credit crisis. The stock market did pay attention to earnings, as Caterpillar and Google will attest. Caterpillar’-s results are instructive. The preeminent maker of construction equipment in the world reported strong international sales, offset by weak domestic demand. I think you’ll see a slowing U.S. economy and continued strong intentional growth repeated in the earnings of other Big Caps. Slowing earnings growth will...

The Perfect Storm
2007-06-18 15:20:00 On October 30, 1991, three autonomous weather systems produced dramatic meteorological factors resulting in a monster weather system off the east coast of Nova Scotia in Canada. The National Weather Service referred to this confluence of meteorological factors as "The Perfect Storm." The storm produced such catastrophic waves in the Atlantic ocean that it sank an unsuspecting sword fishing boat called the Andrea Gail. Pinned in by these awesome weather systems, the Andrea Gail had no real chance. The ship gave up its captain and crew and its tragic storyline became the basis for Sebastian Junger?s best-selling novel The Perfect Storm. Later, the novel was produced into a blockbuster movie by the same name in 2000.Recently, I have been using this metaphor The Perfect Storm to describe a confluence of interrelated factors that are producing unprecedented opportunities in the workforce for adults with disabilities and other barriers to employment. I shared these views about The Perfect...

A `Perfect Storm? Is Rising To Oust Dick Cheney
2007-02-08 21:03:01 by Michele Steinberg Executive Intelligence Review With the combination of the most somber and serious Congressional hearings since Watergate, and the opening of the trial of Vice President Dick Cheney’s former Chief of Staff and National Security Advisor, I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, for perjury and obstruction of justice, there is a “window of opportunity” for impeachment of the Vice President?and Cheney is jumping right through it. On Jan. 24, one day after Cheney was exposed by Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, as directing the campaign to discredit a credible, eyewitness critic, former Ambassador Joe Wilson, by exposing the identity of his wife, Valerie Plame Wilson, who worked as a covert agent of the CIA, Cheney went on national television to announce that the White House will ignore any resolution from Congress that criticizes the escalation of force in Iraq. China?s Concerns in 2007: Fears of a Perfect Storm
2007-02-01 23:17:03 By Rodger Baker http:///www.stratfor.com The year 2007 is an important one for China’s leadership. At the National People’s Congress (NPC) session in March, the government is likely to enact legislation equalizing the status of private property with state property and addressing the imbalance in tax rates between foreign and domestic businesses — both moves designed to encourage domestic Chinese entrepreneurship. In the fall, the Communist Party of China (CPC) will meet for its Congress – bringing changes to the Politburo, stacking the political deck with supporters of President Hu Jintao and providing an early glimpse of the next-generation leadership slated to take power in 2012. Lastly, this is the final year of preparations for the symbolically important summer Olympics, which Beijing will host in 2008. As the regime takes on these social and economic challenges and lays the groundwork for a smooth continuation of power for the next half-decade, there is ...
