Updates to Perfumes: The Guide
2008-08-31 01:26:00
Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez have released the first of a projected series of quarterly updates to Perfumes: The Guide, and are offering the first issue as a free download: Each newsletter reviews about 100 perfumes. The first free issue includes some fragrances missing in the original guide, as well as new brands. Future issues will discuss favorite discontinued perfumes and give our point of view on perfume history, culture, and developments. You can find it here. My absolute favorite line after a very quick skim-through this morning, from the review of Guerlain's recent Cruel Gardenia: Would be perfect if the spray button said "sucker" each time you press it.

Avon Bond Girl 007, Gres Cabotine Delight ~ new perfumes
2008-05-27 01:02:00
Next up from Avon: Bond Girl 007, a fragrance produced in "collaboration with the James Bond entertainment franchise". The scent will debut this fall in conjunction with the upcoming Bond movie Quantum of Solace, and will be fronted by actress Gemma Arterton (who plays Agent Fields in the movie). An Avon spokesperson noted that "the iconic Bond girls are one of the most widely known aspects of the films -- they're empowered, feminine and glamorous, so we're extremely pleased to capture that essence in our newest fragrance". Bond Girl 007 is "a sexy cocktail of velvety florals, cool freshness and warm woods"; the notes include white peach, orange blossom, jasmine, calypso orchid, freesia, amber, cashmere wood and patchouli. The bottle is meant to recall a woman's body; the cap is meant to be "a stealthy homage to a Bond spy gadget". Avon Bond Girl 007 will be available in 50 ml Eau de Parfum. 5 Perfumes for: Gourmand Deniers
2008-05-27 00:23:00
The dessert course has never been among my many vices. I can track a fresh bowl of heavily buttered popcorn from several blocks away, but the Triple Brownie Blackout cake has never called my name. Of course, I like chocolate ? those people who claim not to like it always make me suspicious ? but it must be very dark, and in fact, I will happily eat that 98% cocoa solids stuff with the consistency of chalk. Unfortunately, I do still drink pop, although I blame the carbonation there: I choose mineral water when it?s available. I love traveling in the U.S. because of the wide availability of brewed, unsweetened iced tea. (In Canada, if you are foolish enough to ask for an ice tea, you will likely get a syrup-based product out of a drink gun. If you can finish it, you are a better person than I am.) When I am cajoled into a dessert, ice cream or coffee bar by one of the many sugar-addicted members of my family, my first question to the server is always: ?Which option would you say is th...
The little black dress of perfumes
2008-05-26 15:20:00
Cologne is the little black dress of perfumes. It's a basic, it's a classic, it will suit you forever and every girl (and boy, for colognes are unisex) should have at least one in a fragrance collection. This scent is a refreshing antidote to the simpering, cloying and cynically commercial fruity florals now clogging up perfume counters. ? From Heaven scent: Cologne proves a refreshing antidote to perfume by columnist Bethan Cole in the Independent.
Melissa Flagg Daisies, Laulena & Sadie?s ~ new perfumes
2008-05-15 17:48:00
Melissa Flagg has launched three new fragrances: Daisies (shown) ~ "Inspired by the scents of orange blossom groves in Southern California.... Daisies perfume was named after the heady blossoms of Daisy Mandarin Oranges. Notes of orange blossoms, jasmine and orchid." Laulena ~ "Captures the aroma of Hawaiian flower blossoms... Inspired by the tropical fragrances of Oahu, Laulena is composed of Chinese orange blossoms, Asian nectarine blossoms with hints of lemon and juicy pineapple." Sadie's ~ "Inspired by the captivating scents of springtime... Sadie's perfume is composed of flowering Sakura cherry blossom and plum blossoms with a hint of Asian white tea." Melissa Flagg Daisies, Laulena & Sadie's are available now at Beautyhabit, $42 each for 3.75 ml perfume oil.
I like my perfumes to be rooted in a form of reality?
2008-05-15 01:10:00
There is a short film on the Hermès website of perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena talking about his inspirations for the Kelly Calèche fragrance. He recalls... ...a visit I made to the place where the Hermès leather is stocked...and what surprised me with all these leathers was their smell. They were all flowery to different degrees. It was very far from the approach that chooses to give leather the pungent smell of smoke, like Russian leather with the smell of birch. Smells that are really very hard. It wasn't that at all. The smells were supple, delicate and flowery. To find the film, click on the bottom left orange square on the navigation bar at the upper right hand corner of the screen, then click on the picture of Jean-Claude Ellena. In French, with English subtitles (and I found the subtitles were cut off until I minimized the film screen). Many thanks to Bela for the link!

Ayala Moriel Gigi, Gaucho & Incarnation ~ new perfumes
2008-04-30 21:43:00
Gigi, described as a "grand gardenia sans the drama", is the latest fragrance release from indie all-natural brand Ayala Moriel: Gigi is the newest adition to the Ayala Moriel's Language of Flowers soliflore collection. It is a gardenia soliflore that is lighthearted and at the same time voluptuous. The rare smoothness of Mysore sandalwood lays the foundation for a gardenia illusion - where sambac, jonquille, tuberose, kewda and cardamom dance in unity to create the warm, creamy-spicy sensuality of white petals. Additional notes include rosewood, yellow mandarin, vanilla and myrrh. Gaucho was launched last month along with a matching organic tea with green yerba mate and sencha. Gaucho perfume is named for the South American cowboys of the Pampas and an homage for a song by this name by Steely Dan. Coumarin is the soul of Gaucho from the bitter yerbamate to that sweetness of hay and rosemary and the alluring deertongue (liatrix). Bergamot and galbanum add sparkling greenery and...

Incense fragrances from Tauer Perfumes, Demeter, Matthew Williamson
2008-04-23 02:57:00
Yesterday I wore two discontinued favorites: L'Artisan's lovely Jacinthe des Bois and Gobin Daudé's Sous Le Buis. Layered, the combination was the perfect spring-time fragrance: happy, floral, and very green. But the cool evenings of spring are also perfect for incense fragrances. Here are four worth considering: I loved Incense extrême by Tauer Perfumes, and I can't remember now why I took it into my head that I wouldn't like the newer Incense rosé nearly as well. Whatever the reason, I was quite wrong, as I like it even better. This is a simply lovely fragrance, not quite so bright and airy as the extrême, but still, not quite dark: it has the same soaring quality. The rose is subtle, in fact, the whole thing is simultaneously subtle (none of the notes scream) and strong (I found two sprays to be one spray too many). The citrus in the opening is juicy, and the rose is a bit dewy in the early stages, but for the most part, it is a dry fragrance, and while it has more of a gro...
Trance Essence ~ new perfumes
2008-04-22 02:06:00
catalepsy quint is a new California-based nook line that debuted last year with six fragrances, all created on possessor Janna Sheehan: Pink Kat (shown): “The freshest smelling balminess and oil essences of gardenia, rose, untamed ylang ylang and neroli lend their properties of love from the heart and terrene sexiness. Pink Kat is innocent, unspiritual and alluring all at once.” Abbey Rose: “Imbued with clarity and equilibrium, this quint has rich notes of fig, rose, bergamot, lavender, neroli and a bit of grapefruit.” Chen Xi (chief light of dawn): “This scent has the Zen sensibilities of simplicity and delight. Perfumes: The Guide by Luca Turin & Tania Sanchez ~ perfume book review
2008-04-18 01:52:00
In a letter to his friend Oskar Pollak, Franz Kafka (1883-1924) once wrote: "I believe we should only read books that bite and sting. If a book we?re reading doesn?t wake us up with a punch on the head, what are we reading it for?" That punch on the head, that wake-up call, was a defining element in 20th century art. In Perfumes: The Guide, authors Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez describe their favorite perfumes in similar terms: a great composition takes you by surprise, exceeds your expectations, blows you away. Some people, of course, can't fathom why perfumes are worthy of serious consideration in the first place, let alone why they should be reviewed in a book. I'd recommend those naysayers to pick up a copy of Perfumes: The Guide, and read the short preliminary essays where the authors share their views on perfume aesthetics and criticism. In clear and simple words they explain why perfume is an art, why the industry should take consumers more seriously, and how a guide with u...

Septimanie Perfumes Pavillon des Fleurs & Lush Jasmine & Henna Fluff Ease ~
2008-04-09 20:17:00
Pavillon des Fleurs is the debut fragrance from Septimanie Perfumes. The ad copy calls it a "luminous and refined fragrance" and a "sonata of white flowers", but Angela described more bluntly in an email as "a good wallop of jasmine". Who doesn't love a good wallop of jasmine? (If you're thinking: uh, me, then move on to the next post, there's nothing else to see here today.) Pavillon des Fleurs starts out, actually, with a little slap of jasmine, lightened by orange blossom and a touch of citrus, and only slowly builds up to the goodly wallop stage, although do bear in mind that I'm trying it from a vial. Sprayed from the bottle, it might get to the wallop stage somewhat faster. The jasmine is strong, but it stays bright and spring-like all the way though, and it's just a wee tad indolic, about the way I like my jasmine. The base is pale and velvety, and the "English leather" (the notes: jasmine, ylang ylang, orange blossom, English leather, iris and lily of the valley) is tha...
Perfumes: The Guide ~ Q & A with Luca Turin & Tania Sanchez
2008-04-01 00:53:00
As I said on Friday, Perfumes: The Guide by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez is due to ship from Amazon on 4/10 (list price: $27.95, today's Amazon price: $18.45). The hardcover version is 400 pages and includes introductory material plus reviews of over 1200 fragrances. According to Penguin, the book will "do for fragrance what Robert Parker?s books have done for wine". Many of you have pre-ordered the book, or at least read about it (if you missed the review in the New Yorker, do take a peek), and all of you can skip to the second-to-last paragraph for instructions on how to add your questions to our group interview. Those of you who need some further introduction, read on. Luca Turin is described at Wikipedia as "a biophysicist with a long-standing interest in the sense of smell, the art of perfume, and the fragrance industry". He became known to wider perfumanity first through his Parfums: Le guide, published in French in 1992 and 1994 (you can find a .pdf of the 1994 edition her...
Chocolates & perfumes, part 2 ~ coffee, cacao nibs
2008-03-28 23:27:00
Man cannot live on perfume alone; every so often, we must talk about chocolate instead. Continuing with the same theme as my last dark chocolate with "stuff" added post, here are a few of the chocolates I've tried recently, and once again, I've sprinkled in a few perfume recommendations in a vain attempt to keep things on topic. First, let me just say: OMG, OMG, POCKET COFFEE!!1!!1! Where have these been all my life? I had never even heard of them until Kevin sent me a generous handful. Pocket Coffees are bite-sized chocolate cubes lined with caramelized sugar and filled with sweetened expresso. They're made by the Italian company Ferrero, and they're apparently only sold during cooler months (no Pocket Coffee for you in August, sorry). They seem to be marketed for the caffeine jolt as much as anything else (check out this ad on YouTube) and I can confirm that 4 seems to be my limit before I get the jitters. Personally, I'd eat them even if they were decaffeinated ? although p...
Why we need more than 800 new perfumes a year
2008-03-20 16:15:00
The new fragrances are not to everyone's taste. That's because the trend is going in the direction of distinct fragrances that don't necessarily appeal to the masses. "Fragrances that everyone likes are always a compromise," said Hariegel of the perfumery association. That's why currently so many completely different perfumes - from strongly floral to very fruity to powerfully oriental - are coming on the market. ? From Sweet fruit and flowers are basis of summer fragrance trends, a round-up of recent fragrance launches, in The Earth Times.
New fragrances & solid perfumes from Pacifica
2008-03-05 18:52:00
Pacifica has launched six new fragrances and a line of solid perfumes. The new fragrances are: Thai Lemongrass ~ "A grassy, lemon scent, with slightly spicy and earthy undertones make this an exotic, warm, and fresh fragrance." French Lilac ~ "The essence of fresh lilacs is blended with magnolia leaves, heliotrope, and the subtle notes of the nectarine. Perfumed in a traditional French style, this is the absolute best lilac you will ever find." Malibu Lemon Blossom ~ "Fragrant notes of litsea cubeba, flowering angel's trumpet, fresh herbs and sea breezes. This scent captures the free spirit of the Pacific Coast." Bali Lime Papaya ~ "The scent of sumptuous and slightly musky papaya is brought together with bright green Indonesian kaffir lime and the sweet notes of lime blossoms in this fragrant and lush tropical blend." Hawaiian Ruby Guava ~ "This tropical blend is predominately made up of sweet berry-like notes of the guava, with a citrusy top note of pomelo in a very subtle warm b...

Women and their perfumes
2008-02-03 05:27:00
Most women become confuse when they go for picking out a fragrance because they are very choosy to get right perfume. However they enjoy this. 5 Perfumes for: the Winter Blues
2008-01-29 22:37:00
Perfume blog newbies often comment that some of the regulars have a language of their own, and indeed we even have our own dirty words, the f- and s-bombs: "fruit" and "sweet". I must admit to being among the contingent that usually gives a snobbish shiver of repulsion when I read a note list that includes grape, litchi or coconut. Unfortunately, sales assistants flogging candy cocktails are attracted to my chubby cheeks, decade-old sweatshirts and general lack of bearing. I notice this most often in big city, higher-end department stores: salespeople ignored by the older, impeccably groomed customers going by zero in on me as being the only person in the area who could conceivably be within the age range for their fragrance. Since I was a child, I've had a particular fear of situations in which somebody is giving an embarrassing or futile speech and I am obliged to stand there, smiling politely. I feel this fear as a pain in my chest, as heartburn, while I stand there with my froz...

Tauer Perfumes Incense extreme ~ new fragrance
2008-01-05 20:51:00
Coming later this month from Tauer Perfumes, Incense extrême, a new fragrance based on a natural CO2 extract of Boswellia serrata (aka Indian frankincense): This natural incense scent inspired me to create different perfumes, with "Incense extreme" being the most abstract, almost cubist and uncompromising interpretation. It captures the roughness of the climate of the semi desert where Boswellia trees thrive. It is translucent like the first whiff of incense smoke from frankincense resin on red gleaming coal. Yet, it is crisp like a night in the desert. The Boswellia serrata extract is the central cornerstone of the fragrance, at a concentration of 25%, rounded off with dry woods and ambergris in the background. Soft iris balances the incense in the heart of the fragrance. And coriander and the freshness of petitgrain set the accents in the opening. The richness of the natural incense enchants with an array of impressions, playing differently as it develops, a kaleidoscope of co...

Too many perfumes
2007-12-26 16:25:00
Besides turning off consumers, the plethora of perfumes has also hit bottom lines. With so much competition, many companies spend as much as $50 million to promote a major new scent. That's equivalent to an entire year of sales for most perfume brands, making it increasingly difficult to recover the costs. ? So her $65 dollar perfume becam $48.xx shipped. I told her to add something to get it over $50, I think she addeda clearanced polo shirt for me. Her total before tax was $51.22. 5 Perfumes for: a Scrooge
2007-12-10 17:56:00
Like many people who grew up in my part of the world, I come from Scottish stock (although my maternal grandmother was Native/Aboriginal Canadian, just to keep things interesting.) Besides a love of single malts, turnips and dishes based on organ meats, I have inherited that particular brand of stubborn crustiness made famous by the Scots. This is the time of year when I indulge in one of my family's favorite movies: Scrooge, the 1951 version of "A Christmas Carol", starring the incomparable (and Scottish) Alastair Sim. An advent story from Tauer Perfumes
2007-12-01 22:40:00
Andy Tauer of Tauer Perfumes is going to be telling an advent story in 24 chapters, starting today: It is not really perfumery related, but more a funny story of life and living in the desert, near to migrating dunes and a large desert mountain... You can follow the ongoing story on the Tauer Perfumes blog, where you can also enter to win a preview sample of his upcoming fragrance release, Incense extrême, which is scheduled to launch in January. Sample drawings will be held daily, but you can comment any time during the month to be included in all the future drawings (e.g., you needn't comment every day to be considered).
