Which Jesus: A Legend with a Multiple Personality Disorder?
2008-02-15 06:54:00
Which Jesus: A Legend with a Multiple Personality Disorder? By Rook Hawkins Recently I wrote an article on the genre of the Gospels, and determined that the biographical genre of the Gospels is in serious doubt. The Gospels can not longer be considered a history of the life of Jesus. In this article I also brought up the position that modern scholars attempting to find the historical Jesus in the Gospel narratives are in fact fracturing the Gospels into specific sections and verses, while also using personal bias to determine which verse is ?historical? and which is not. Although I put forth the probable position that the Gospels are meant to be read as literary fiction, I purposefully left several questions unanswered; who wrote them and why were they written? read more

Why Do We Use Personality Disorder Diagnoses Anyway?

This Post is a promised follow up to a post from two weeks ago called “Do you believe “Personality Disorder” diagnoses are pathologizing?“  I was motivated to finish it this morning when I read a passionate comment posted by Jeana in response to the above mentioned article.  The comment can be found here, but for the sake of getting others into the spirit of which I finished this post, I will copy it here: “I need to rant…I am so tired of therapists and doctors labeling clients PD then in essence giving up on them. I had a recent incident with a client that I have worked with for 6 months. She attempted to get more help by entering a day treatment program for her ED and was told by the MD, who had only read her chart that “with her PD and SI, [she was] too severe for the program.” Of course the client calls after 3 hours of Binging and Purging saying “What PD???” Uggg!! I talked to the MD who was cold, lacked compassion, an...
Do you believe ?Personality Disorder? diagnoses are pathologizing?
2007-06-12 02:42:00
Recently, someone asked GoodTherapy.org to include Personality Disorders within our list of Concerns Addressed (this is the list of concerns that people can select when searching for therapists and the list that all members select from when creating their listing). Our decision was a unanimous ?no? and we thought it would be fair to explain ...
NCP Passive Aggressive Personality Disorder
2007-05-14 10:32:00
DSM-IV 301.9 Personality disorder NOS Passive-Aggressive personality disorder (negativistic personality disorder)—provided for further study. This disorder is characterized by a pervasive pattern of passive resistance, expressed indirectly rather than directly, to demands for adequate social/occupational performance, with the individual viewing the future as negatively as they view the present. ETIOLOGICAL THEORIES Psychodynamics These clients are unaware that ongoing difficulties are the result of their own behaviors. They experience conscious hostility toward authority figures but do not connect their ownpassive-resistant behaviors with hostility or resentment. They do not trust others, are not assertive, are intentionally inefficient, and try to “get back” at others through aggravation. Anger and hostility are released through others, who become angry and may suffer because of the client’s inefficiencies. This disorder can lead to more serious psychological dysfunct...
NCP Anti Social Personality Disorder
2007-05-14 10:31:00
DSM-IV 301.7 Antisocial personality disorder “Sociopath” and “psychopath” are terms often used to describe the individual with antisocial personality. As deceit and manipulation are central features of the disorder, it is extremely difficult to treat. Imprisonment has been society’s major method for controlling the most dangerous behaviors. ETIOLOGICAL THEORIES Psychodynamics Psychodynamically, this individual remains fixed in an earlier level of development. Because of parental rejection or indifference, needs for satisfaction and security remain unmet, and the ego is underdeveloped. Because of a lack of ego strength, behavior is id directed and results in the need for immediate gratification. An immature supergo allows this individual to pursue gratification, regardless of means and without experiencing feelings of guilt. Biological Genetic involvement has been implicated in studies that showed that individuals with antisocial personality, and their parents, showe...
Much loved comic diagnosed with personality disorder
2007-03-30 11:50:00
Friends and relatives were today rallying round comedy star Ricky Gervais after he announced that he was suffering from “Single Personality Disorder”.“He has suffered, quietly, for years,” said a pal. “He has managed to cover it up by clever renaming of his David Brent character and sometimes by wearing a different jacket.”Gervais said he had made the announcement to try and help others with the same affliction. SPD is a condition said to inflict most of society, however it is a dangerous condition for a comedic genius such as Gervais.“Not everyone has been as lucky as me. With the help of a few close friends, and a fawning media. I managed to conceal the awful truth for over 5 years,” the comic said today.Friends reveal that the strain was starting to tell on Ricky and advised him to make a public statement so that he could then seek help with his condition.“Ricky is Ricky, a wonderful chap, but exactly what you see on TV is Ricky. There is no hidden dimension to ...
Psychopathy and Antisocial Personality Disorder: A Case of Diagnostic Confu
2007-02-27 05:47:01
A Secret Service agent recently asked if I was familiar with a 1992 FBI report that almost half of the killers of law enforcement officers met the criteria for antisocial personality. I replied that I had not seen the report but that the finding did not seem surprising or noteworthy to me. My comment was based on the assumption that the report had used antisocial personality as a synonym for antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), a category listed in the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) and applicable to the majority of criminals.
?DARE? to spot borderline personality disorder
1970-01-01 00:59:00
Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) exhibit a pattern of instability in interpersonal relation-ships, self-image, and affects, and marked impulsivity beginning in early adulthood. These patients may experience other symptoms, such as mood swings or transient psychotic episodes, that are exacerbated by stress. A BPD patient likely has additional diagnoses from previous clinicians - such as bipolar disorder, dysthymic disorder, panic disorder, major recurrent depression, substance abuse, posttraumatic stress disorder, intermittent explosive disorder, or any variety of adjustment, anxiety, eating, impulse control, mood, somatoform, or personality disorders.
Sexual Addiction or Personality Disorder
0000-00-00 00:00:00
On the bandwagon of the Spitzer circus...I continue to ponder how he and so many other recent politicians are able to masquerade as trusted government officials and still function as sex addicts and/or sociopaths.  And, in fact, are these "types" just sex addicts or is there a deeper psychological component ...
